This is the fourth part of my story "The Black Statue." It is recommended that you read the first three chapters, especially the third part. Just so you know, this chapter is more of a FLASHBACK to see WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO LEILA AND VANESSA. This flashback is composed of two parts, the latter will be the fifth chapter. So, enjoy yourselves!

    • This is the fourth part of my story "The Black Statue." It is recommended that you read the first three chapters, especially the third part. Just so you know, this chapter is more of a FLASHBACK to see WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO LEILA AND VANESSA. This flashback is composed of two parts, the latter will be the fifth chapter.     • Vanessa was standing outside the Family Room. She listens in pain as she hears her mother, Erandya, crying without end. She knew that life is not going to be the same. Not with her father gone. Deep inside, she too was grieving.

    • Erandya continued to cry, unaware that Vanessa was outside listening, and that Leila, her younger daughter, is standing by the door. "Oh Kristof!" Erandya was saying, "Why did you have to leave us now? When I most needed you!."

    • Leila walked in. She sat down beside her mother, and even though she was also in pain of their father's death, she knew she had to be strong for her mother and her older sister. "Mom," Leila said," I know how much it hurts to lose someone you love. I feel the pain and sadness too..." Leila said in a comforting, soft voice.

    • "Mom, Vanessa and me will always be here. We know we cannot replace father, but as your daughters, we are always here. Please stop crying. We are here to help you, to help each other, to start over. Remember, mother, that father's spirit and love will always be with us. He may have passed away, but his love will always remain.

    • Erandya stopped crying and stood up. "I guess your right, my dear child." Leila stood up too and smiled, and gave her mother a comforting pat in the back.

    • "Don't worry mother. Vanessa and I will take care of you. We will love you the way father loved you." Leila said, and gave her mother a big, comforting hug. "Leila, my dear... I have something to tell you." Leila looked surprised. "What is it, mom?"

    • "Leila... I don't know how to say this..."

    "Go ahead, mother." Leila replied reassuringly.

    "Leila, I know how your father, always favored your older sister Vanessa over you."

    Leila was sure where the conversation was heading. She immediately interrupted her mother.

    "Mom, no! We've talked this over hundreds of times!"

    • "Mom!" Leila said in a loud, surprised tone. "You know that what you are planning to do can break father's heart! I do not deserve to inherit the Gift. You know that Gift is supposed to be passed on to Vanessa! You cannot just turn your back against your promise to dad! You cannot betray Vanessa and Father!!"

    • Erandya's voice suddenly became stronger. "Leila, your father may have favored Vanessa, but I can see through. I see your hearts. I see your true selves. I know which one of you will put the Gift to a good use. Leila, this decision of mine is the best not only for ourselves, but the whole of Laxia."

    • Leila cannot believe what she is hearing from her mother. "Mom, I can't do this. Father may be dead, but I still respect him, mother. He wants Vanessa to inherit the Gift. I cannot live knowing that I have deprived my sister of her right, and disobeyed one of the people I always looked up to."

    • Leila's voice became louder. "How could you? I never knew that you can do this!" Erandya looked at her daughter with sadness in her eyes. "Leila, it is the best thing to do for all of us. I love your father and your sister. But I just want to do what is right. Please understand..."

    • "Mom, no. I cannot accept. I... I need to rest." Leila started walking away. "No matter what you do or say, Leila, I know that my Gift truly deserves to be passed on to you. Every Laxian wanted to have this Gift, but the Gift chooses its bearer. Leila, I know that it is choosing you. I just want you to know... that I am willing to face anything... to sacrifice anything, as long as the Gift is passed on to you and not to Vanessa. Believe me, Leila.

    • Leila walked out of the room. She was confused. Deep inside, she knows her mother is right, but there is also a feeling inside her telling her that it will dishonor her father. She finally knows that the question now is to whether or not accept the Gift. But at the same time, she does not want to hurt her sister, and disobey what her father said.

    • Vanessa heard everything her sister and her mother talked about. She did not like what she heard. She ran upstairs to the balcony. All she wanted was to be alone.

    • "This is not fair," she said, "Father, why did you have to leave us? I was going to inherit the Gift! But without you, I know I don't have a chance! I always knew that you would also forsake me father, and leave me alone in this world. Why, father? Why!?"

    • Her feelings of pain immediately gave way to feelings of hatred. "I will avenge myself, father, whether you like it or not! Nobody can stop me now! I was betrayed of all my rights, I was told a lie! Mother never loved me! Look at what she is doing! She is depriving me of what should be mine! Father, that Gift should be MINE!"

    • Vanessa stood on the balcony, unnoticed by Erandya or Leila. She silently cursed her sister and her mother. She silently cursed and tainted the memory of her father. She secretly planned revenge.

    • Leila went to her bedroom to rest. After her conversation with her mother, she needed to rest her mind. She still can't swallow everything she just heard her mother say. Then suddenly, a voice called out. "I knew you and mother were always against me."

    • Leila stopped in her tracks. "Vanessa, it's not what you think it is..." Vanessa interrupted. "I heard everything. How could both of you do this to me?"

    • "Vanessa," Leila sat down. "There is nothing I can do. I have to respect mother's decision. Please respect her too."

    "Mother never respected me, why should I respect her? She only loves you. She never liked me. Father was the only one who ever showed his love to me, and that is with all of you included. But with him gone, I... I am lonely." Vanessa replied, sadness and hatred evident in her voice.

    • "Vanessa, you are my older sister, and I love you. I never hated you all my life. I always looked up to you... I do not want us to be enemies. Mother needs us more than ever." Leila replied.

    "Enough of this. You cannot trick me by mere words." Vanessa's voice was trembling.

    • "LIAR!" Vanessa screamed. "YOU AND MOM ARE BOTH LIARS! When did you ever love me? When you needed something from me? You and mother USED ME! I became insignificant in this house! I felt like I was only a disgrace in t his family!"

    • "Sister, you are wrong. We never used you. Can't you see? Mother just knows what is best for everyone in the family, and she also wants the best for our clan."

    • "You are lying. You... you are a traitor, you never deserved that gift. That was meant for me!"

    "Vanessa, please understand. Calm your mind. I have had enough of this too. Can't we just live in peace? I am tired. I need to rest now. Maybe you just need to relax your mind. Tomorrow will be a new day. Good night, Vanessa." Leila replied, and drifted off to sleep.

    • Vanessa looked at her sister. "Goodnight, my little sister. You and mother are going to pay." She left Leila's room and went to her own little room.
