  • THE GHOST OF OLD PIER BEACH

A young couple who went for a walk on Old Pier Beach on Tuesday evening claim that the beach is haunted by a ghost! Gwen Glover and her boyfriend Holden Wozny told the Sunset Valley Herald about the terrifying experience.
"We were like, just walking along the beach together, when I saw something out of the corner of my eye," says Gwen. "I turned to look at it and there was this man, but even though I could see him I could see through him too!"
"I saw Gwen go pale and I turned round to see what she was looking at," Holden told us. "But all I could see was this pale blue fog further down the beach."
This isn't the first ghost story we've heard in recent weeks. Many locals speculate that this could be the ghost of the young fisherman lost at sea last month.

  • "The young fisherman"... I didn't have a name now, I was the fisherman ghost. I regretted not doing more. Not making more friends. Anna had been my only true friend and I thought she was all I needed. I wished I'd left a bigger mark on the world.
  • 4
  • It had been some time now since my death. Anna was growing older, and was spending longer and longer trying to conceal wrinkles in the mirror each day
  • 5
  • "Oh this is ridiculous," said Anna, pulling me out of my self-pitying thoughts. Her sister had come to stay with her, to help her put things straight and, in her words "move on" with her life.
  • 6
  • "What's that?" asked Aster. "Oh, yeah, I read that earlier. Ghosts, yeah right."
    "They think it's Arthur though!"
"Doesn't make it any less ridiculous. I know you desperately want to speak to him again, hold him again, whatever, but you can't. Ghosts aren't real, but memories are."

Aster cleared her plate. "Come on," she said. "Let's start sorting through Arthur's stuff."
  • 7
  • The two women moved to the living area, where my possessions sat in the same boxes they had been hastily stuffed into after my death. Anna took a deep breath, and opened the first box.
  • 8
  • It was quite strange to watch as the sisters picked my posessions, one by one, out of the boxes. Most of it was clothes, or junk that I'd totally forgotten about.

"Come here, look at these socks!" Anna smiled fondly. "I never could get him not to wear socks in bed."
  • 9
  • The women giggled, and despite myself I smiled. My habit of wearing socks in bed had always driven Anna to despair.
  • 10
  • "You know..." Aster said. "It's been a long time now. Long enough I think. Nobody expects you to mourn forever you know."
She spoke quickly, not wanting to let Anna get a word in before she'd finished.
  • 11
  • "Aster, I don't know," said Anna. "I loved Arthur in a way I never loved any man before him. I don't think I will feel that way about anyone again."
"That doesn't mean you can't try."
  • 12
  • Anna looked at her sister hard. "You've set me up with someone," she said, "haven't you?"
  • 13
  • "Look, he's a good man, why not just go on one date, dip your toe in the water again?"
Anna sighed heavily. "You know I hate it when you're right," she said.
  • 14
  • "Ok great! Now, Greta Goth CDs, keeps or charity shop?"
"Greta Goth?!" exclaimed Anna. "Are you kidding me? Nobody'll buy that rubbish, I can't lumber a charity with that!"
  • 15
  • I left the sisters to mock my music taste, and returned to the beach.

Anna was moving on. I cursed my clumsy nature. How had I managed to knock myself unconscious with my own fishing rod anyway? My mind had been on the fish, not what I was doing with my hands. If only I'd been concentrating on what I was doing, everything would be so different.
  • 16
  • Behind me, I could hear quiet footsteps on the sand, interrupting my thoughts. I turned around. There was the girl again. She was staring straight at me, walking towards me purposefully.
  • 17
  • "Please don't faint again," I said quietly, stepping towards her.
  • 18
  • "Are you who they say you are?" she asked. "Are you the fisherman?"
I nodded slowly. "Yes, Arthur Goole, nice to meet you..." I offered my hand, and somehow, she took it.
    "I'm Gwen," she said softly.
  • 19
  • I told Gwen about myself. I told her how I'd died at sea, missing out the part about hitting myself on the head with my fishing rod and throwing in a storm and a violent octopus. I was pretty sure she bought it.
Finally, I told her about Anna. About how she was trying to move on.
  • 20
  • "... and she can't see you?" Gwen asked. "Are you sure?"
"I waved my hands in her face, touched her arm. She doesn't even sense I'm there."
  • 21
  • "I could take her a message!" Gwen said. "I could tell her I can see you."
"She'd think you were being weird," I sighed. "She doesn't believe in ghosts."
  • 22
  • There was a long pause. "Anyway," I said. "What good could it do? She can't see me, can't touch me... she needs to move on and be happy."

I hoped Gwen couldn't see me clearly enough to see the tears welling up in my eyes.
Gwen nodded sadly. "Well... maybe it'd make you feel better if you check this guy out? You'd know he's suitable for your Anna then. If not, you might be able to scare him off somehow."
  • 23
  • After my chat with Gwen, I was determined to check Anna's date out. I hung around Anna and Aster until I discovered his name: Archie Stubbs.
  • 24
  • I half wanted to discover that Archie was a bad man, that Anna would immediately know he was unsuitable for her. That half of me was disappointed.

Archie was a high ranking forensics officer with the police. His work could be grisly, investigating the scenes of terrible crimes, but his intentions, and his motives, were pure. He wanted to catch the bad guy.
  • 25
  • Not only that, he reminded me of someone. It took me a while to realise it, but he reminded me of a film star who'd been prominent a few years ago. Anna had had a crush on him, so we'd been to see a lot of his films together.

Archie seemed perfect for Anna. Probably more so than I had been, in all honesty.
  • 26
  • Archie's phone rang, bringing me back to reality.

"Hello? ... Anna! I'm so glad you called I've got us a table at the bistro tonight, will that be ok? ... eight o'clock... I'll see you then... looking forward to it... ok see you later!"
  • 27
  • I sighed heavily. I wanted Anna to move on and be happy again, I really did, but actually watching it happen was something else.
