I....MONSTER

A gothic tale with a Frankenstein twist...It is 1839 outside of Geneva, Switzerland...an ambitious young scientist is obsessed with the mysteries of creation...who is the true monster; Master or Creature?
Henry Frankenstien was an intense, intelligent young man, just graduating from university with a degree in the sciences. He was eager to put his knowledge to practical use, what fascinated him greatly were the questions of life and death, and all things metaphysical. Henry Frankenstein keeps a secret laboratory deep in the mountains in an old monestary safe from prying eyes. It is here he will advance his ambitions, and try to answer the questions that he has been asking ever since his mother died at a young age, what is life and death? Many a long night, Henry would work in this lab, trying to get answers to the timeless questions of science; he became obsessed with the laws of nature. A rather macabre idea came to him, what if he could bring the dead back to life? This life and death question haunted Henry, tortured his very soul, so late one night he went into the graveyard and dug up someone who had just been buried late that afternoon....a young man who had been put to death for thievery. In complete secrecy, Henry returned to his lab with the body from the freshly dug grave. He would now begin the gruesome chore of trying to bring a corpse back to life.

Henry was determined to unravel the mysteries of a man's soul.
After many weeks of scavenging for body parts and working out all the details, Henry has aquired the last ingredient for his experiment. A human brain. Henry has stolen it from the university, where it was well preserved. Henry sleeps fitfully in his bed. Tomorrow he will put the stitched together body with it's new brain in the tub full of water and run bolts of electricity into it, a nasty thunderstorm is predicted to hit the area. But while he sleeps; Henry is in the middle of a horrible nightmare. Henry dreams of the love of his life, his dutiful fiance, Elizabeth Brickstone. She has waited patiently for Henry as he worked longed into the night for many months on his 'experiment'. He would not develge any information to Elizabeth, or let her come anywhere near his laboratory. But in Henry's dream, his beloved Elizabeth has followed him into the cemetery where he is trying to locate more body parts. Elizabeth is terrified by an undead creature of the night. Is this dream a forewarning of things to come? Henry wakes up in a cold sweat. Was this dream trying to tell him something? Is he going to expose Elizabeth and himself to unspeakable horror? What did this dreadful dream mean? All warnings and misgivings were soon forgotten, Henry could not give up on his 'experiment'. He had come too far to stop now.
He placed the creature in the water and is about to prepare to try and bring it to life. Henry is on a tragic course for which there is no return.
The thunderstorm raged outside, Henry began to scream, "Live ! Live!" when a bolt of lightening hit the pole outside and travelled down the wires into the tub. Suddenly, the creature's eyes fluttered open and he looked at Henry.

"It's alive, It's alive!" Henry cried hysterically.
Henry congratulated himself with a celebratory drink. He had done it! He had unlocked the very secrets of life and death! He would be famous, all his ambitions have been realized! Henry was too self-absorbed to realize what he has unleashed on humanity. While Henry is patting himself on the back, the creature begins to become aware of his surroundings, he is like a new born babe. He is curious about everything. He is innocent and eager to learn. Now jolted to life, the creature is proving to be sensitive, knowledgeable, intelligent and also having a conscience. It has only been a few weeks and he has caught on to speech, and is soon reading and playing the piano, like he always knew how. Many more weeks pass, the creature is showing a curiosity of all living things, as it begins to dawn on him that all life is precious. He is eager to learn more. But he is feeling very lonely locked up in the abandoned monestary where Henry keeps his lab. More than anything, he wants to be loved. The creature manages to sneak away from the monestary, a few hours pass and he comes across a young couple having a picnic in the woods. He watches intently at thier obvious happiness, and enjoyment in each other's company. His heart begins to ache with longing. The young couple are much in love, and the creature realizes he wants to feel the same way toward someone. He wants someone to share his life with, a woman to love, he is quite envious of the young man and his good fortune. The creature approaches the couple, but they begin to scream. He is a monsterous sight with his gray, decaying skin. The creature is puzzled, he tries to quiet them both.....forcibly. The creature, returns to the monestary. He seeks out a mirror, he wanted to see what was so horrific to the young couple. His reflection is abhorent to him.
"Father! Why would you make me this way?" he cried. The creature was inconsolable.
The creature turned to face Henry. With fists clenched, he cried at him, "You! You are to blame! I am hated! I am reviled! You did this to me! Why father, why?"

Henry is taken aback by the creature's anger. "Do not call me father..." Henry said menacingly.
Later that afternoon, Henry went down to answer the door and was surprised to see a soldier.
"Pardon for the disturbance Herr Frankenstein," the soldier said gravely. "But my soldiers were on patrol nearby, and we have come across a horrific scene, a young couple have been murdered in the woods, and I was wondering if you have seen any strangers in the vincinity who might have perpertrated this terrible act?"
Henry was shocked. He had a terrible feeling in the pit of his stomach that his creation had something to do with this.

"Sorry Sargeant, I have seen no one. It is pretty isulated around here. I am sorry to hear of such a horrid act. I will certainly let you know if I hear of anything."

And with that, Henry closed the door.
In another part of the castle, the creature reads from 'Paradise Lost', "Did I request thee Master to my clay to mold me man, did I solict thee from darkness to promote me?"

Tears gather in the creature's eyes. The passage holds deep meaning for him.

Henry sought out the creature. "What have you done?" Henry cried. "That poor young couple, what possessed you? You are evil!"

"It was an unfortunate accident!" the creature cried passionately. 'I was only trying to quiet them! I had no intention of harming them!"
"I curse these hands that gave you life! You are an abomination!" Henry lamented. "You are a blot on humanity! What have I done?" "It is your fault, "the creature hissed, "The world has rejected me! If only you knew the loneliness I have had to endure! You must make me a mate, one like me! You can do it, I have read your journal, you owe me this!" "No, I will not do it! I will not create another creature like yourself, it would be monsterous!" Henry shouted in dismay.

The creature was livid. "I cannot be alone! Listen to me Frankenstein, I will be at your wedding night. I gave you a chance to give me happiness, now I will take yours!"
The creature fled from the castle.
"What have I unleashed? God forgive me for my arrogance and ambition! Now I have put my beloved Elizabeth in danger...the world is a miserable place!" Henry cursed himself and the creature. The creature has been gone for a few weeks, Henry has no idea where he went, nor did he care, except for the dire threat hanging over his head.
He finally allowed Elizabeth to visit his private santuary. Henry smiled broadly when she walked into the library. He was indeed happy to see her.

"Elizabeth, can you forgive me for neglecting you so? Let us be married right away...I love you my dearest!"

Elizabeth is touched by Henry's declations of love and devotion, she agrees to marry him immediately.
A few weeks have passed and Elizabeth is getting ready for her long awaited wedding day. A last minute check in the mirror before the ceremony begins, how she has longed for her and Henry to be wed. Without warning the creature has appeared in Elizabeth's bedroom. Elizabeth is frozen with fear and screams in horror. "My God, what are you??" she screeches. "Someone help me!!" Elizabeth immediately swoons from terror. The creature, who has extreme physical strength, grabs Elizabeth and whisks her away without anyone in the house knowing. There will be no wedding today for Henry and Elizabeth. Henry hears the screams from downstairs and immediately runs to Elizabeth's room. It is too late, she is gone. Henry realizes the creature has carried out his threat.
"Nooooooo!" Henry screams in agony.
After Elizabeth awakes some time later, she finds some of her clothes in the room, she dresses and goes downstairs, she finds the creature in one of the rooms.

The creature is thinking of Elizabeth and her beauty, it is making him very sad, 'someone as beautiful as her would never love me...' he thought to himself.
"Elizabeth," the creature said quietly. "How I have longed to meet you."

Elizabeth immediately tore into the creature. "How dare you interrupt my wedding day! Who are you? And where have you taken me! Speak you abomination!" she screeched.

"I would be very careful with your insults woman," the creature said angerily. "All you need to know is you are my prisoner for as long as I choose. Forget escape, we are high in the Alps, and if you wish Henry Frankenstein to live, you will do as I say. Now follow me..." The creature led Elizabeth deep into the castle. "Observe this room I found, it was used by men to inflict pain on other men...is this how one treats another human being? If so, then heed my warnings, I will not hesitate to bring you to this room should you disobey me." Elizabeth was genuinely frightened. She did not why this person hated her and Henry so, but she decided she certainly did not want to provoke him in any way.
"As you wish..." she said quietly.
"You may go where you wish in the castle, but you cannot go outside." The creature said. "Again, heed my warnings."
Later that same evening, Elizabeth was reading when she heard the most heavenly music, she followed the sound into another room. There was the creature playing the piano. Elizabeth stood and listened, tears were forming in her eyes the music moved her so. As the days passed, Elizabeth found she was not as frightened of the creature as she first was. Most nights he read to her, beautiful poetry and classic tales of long ago. His voice was gentle and soothing as he related the words to her. She could listen to him read all night his voice was beautiful. Elizabeth finds herself dreaming of the creature...his sensitivity and angelic piano playing is making quite an impression on her. But she is also somewhat horrified she is dreaming of him...is he even human? Why is she even thinking of him in her dreams? Elizabeth was greatly confused. For the creature's part, he has been watching Elizabeth very closely. Her beauty touches him to his very soul. He is falling in love with Henry Frankenstein's fiance, and he does not know what to do about it. Elizabeth sought out the creature one afternoon, he was hard at work fixing a crumbling wall in another part of the castle. "You must have a name, " she said quietly. "What may I call you?"

The creature turned away and smiled slightly. "He hasn't told you about me, has he?"
The creature told Elizabeth everything, of his beginnings and Henry's involvement in his rebirth.
"I am stitched together death and decay, and yet I feel things deeply, I have abnormal strength, so are my perceptions and passions, but my heart is filled with such anger..." his voice trailed off sadly.
Elizabeth listened to the whole sorry tale. She could not believe what she was hearing! Henry involved in such doings, defying the very laws of nature...it was horrific to hear. She was saddened for all concerned, including herself. The creature took Elizabeth's hands, she did not shrink away. "You are truly the most beautiful creature I ever beheld." He said passionately. "You may pick a name for me, I would be honoured if you did."

Elizabeth smiled warmly. "I think James, it seems to fit."
The creature was moved by Elizabeth's show of sympathy and understanding, he began to lean toward Elizabeth, as if to kiss her cheek. Elizabeth backed away...The look of fear and horror on her face were not hard to miss. The creature became incensed. "Do you think I am numb to feelings of love, compassion?" he cried. "You reject me! Get out and leave me alone, this instant!"

Elizabeth turned and fled from the room.
Meanwhile, Henry Frankenstein is having a difficult time to make the Sargeant aware of the circumstances of Elizabeth's disappearance.

"For God's sake man, it has been over three weeks! What have you done to try to find her?" Henry cried worriedly.
"Rest assured Herr Frankenstein, we are doing all we can, there are not many leads, no witnesses and so forth..." The Sargeant stated.
"I have told you who took her! I told you he is responsible for the deaths of the young couple, you should be out looking for him right now!" Henry yelled.

"Ah....yes, a creature of your own making. Surely Herr Frankenstein, you must know how fantastical that sounds. I know Miss Brickstone is missing, abducted from her room. But that some 'thing' absconded with her is rather hard to prove."
"You Sargeant are incompetent!! I will have to go out and look for myself!" Henry cried angerily.

The Sargeant lost his composure. "Now listen to me, Herr Frankenstein, I have had about enough of your insults. You want to join the search, be my guest. But remember, I am in charge!"
Henry sighed and reluctantly agreed.
Elizabeth felt terrible for hurting 'James' feelings, it wasn't until the next day she dare approach him. She stepped into the parlour and called him by the name she chose. The creature was still very upset and angry....he turned and looked away. "I am so very sorry James," Elizabeth said quietly. "My behaviour was rude and cruel. I...I was so confused, after what you had told about about Henry..." her voice trailed off. "I really do not know what to say..."

The creature's angry heart soared at the sound of Elizabeth's gentle and kind words.
James wound up the music box he had found in the old castle. He walked toward Elizabeth. "May I have this dance?" he asked gallantly.

Elizabeth was surprised. "You know how to dance as well? Of course you may." She slowly walked toward the creature and put her small hand in his.
They danced together for sometime, the creature had never been so happy. He smiled warmly at Elizabeth, and she in turn, smiled back. She felt safe and protected in his arms, she could not explain it. Elizabeth instinctively pulled herself closer to 'James'. All her doubts and fears that she had of the creature were now gone. She even managed to forget he was holding her prisoner in this old abandoned castle, located God knows where....she only knew that at this moment in time, she was content. The creature's heart was so overflowing with love and gratitude, someone was being kind to him, showing affection. It was more than he could bear, and his tears of joy began to flow freely.

Elizabeth was deeply moved by this sensitive display of emotion....they danced on in each other's arms for the rest of the evening....
The next day, 'James' sought out Elizabeth. "You are no longer my prisoner. I took you away to punish Frankenstein, but all I am doing is punishing myself. If you will wait a couple of days, I will take you back to him. I regret my actions deeply. The last thing I want to do is make you miserable." he said quietly. Before Elizabeth had to chance to even respond, Henry Frankenstein burst into the room. "I have a whole brigade of soldiers outside, it is fruitless to struggle." Without warning, Henry attacked the creature and knocked him cold.

"Sargeant! Come in here at once!" Henry cried. Elizabeth began screaming.
After the Sargeant dragged a screaming Elizabeth outside, Henry took a torch and set the room alight. He stood and looked at the unconscious creature, the being he gave life to, all he could think of was how he now wanted to end that life. He ran from the room and locked it tight. Moments later, the creature awoke and found himself in a room engulfed with flames. Where was Elizabeth? What was going on? The creature began to howl, he searched the room for an escape, but there was none. Below his feet the floor creaked and shuddered. As the flames began to surround him, the creature's thoughts turned to Elizabeth. His eyes filled with tears, and they spilled onto his cheeks. "My darling....Elizabeth..." his voice faded..all that he could hear was the furious roar of the fire all around him.... Elizabeth watched helplessly as the decrepid old castle burned. Anger and hatred filled her soul. How could Henry do this? She cannot believe she was going to marry herself to such a man. Henry began to laugh hysterically. "He's gone! He's gone!" he cried.

Elizabeth looked on the display with disgust. Who truly is the monster here? Who is the most abhorent being? She took one look at Henry and walked away.
Many days later, in the rubble of the partially collapsed castle ruins, an arm defiantly rises out of the rubble....Henry Frankenstein's creature lives still....

You have a talent for the gothic / romantic stories. You definately did not disappint with this story. I only noticed one little thing, one of your pics must have been taken in build mode, not a big deal, but I would try to avoid. The thought bubbles totally added to the story. It's interesting how the women always fall in love with the monster, it's kind of cool.

\:rah\: Hi drewsoltesz - I LOVE when you invite me to read your stories because I am never disappointed! You are such a talented writer and you always take such amazing pictures to go along with the stories that you immediately draw your reader into the storyline and make them a part of the story they are reading. Once again this is a fantastic adaptation of a classic tale that we all know and love. I thought that picture of James in the burning castle was spectacular and really embodied the full feeling of torture that he feels as "the monster". To me it really symbolized that burning within himself to have those things he longs for that you mentioned throughout the story as well as the literal event that was going on at the time. That was the most powerful screenshot of the entire story for me personally. Once again - excellant job! Happy simming to you & I am off to read part 2! ~Rhiannon32GA
