This is Part 5 and the conclusion of the Dracula Family Saga...Part 1 (Oct 31/2006) Part 2 (Dec 21/2006) Part 3 (Feb 6) Part 4 (April 18) Not following any particular book or movie, this is my own story.... As our last chapter ended, Victor has just learned he has a brother. The shock was palatable, he stared at the young man in front of him, the similarity in looks were uncanny. This information for Victor was hard to digest.
"But....how? I can't believe...." Victor was stunned speechless. "Is he not beautiful?" Dracula said proudly. "He favours your mother Mina to be sure, he has her beautiful eyes..." Dracula's voice broke. "My darling Mina..." he said quietly, his voice thick with emotion.
"But how is he here?" Victor demanded. "This is beyond all reason!" "When you brought me back," Dracula said, "I began to feel another prescence in our midst. After some investigation, I found the nurse that assisted in your mother's birth at the asylum. When Mina died, the newborn child was thought to be dead as well. After everyone left, the nurse had an idea..." "She ran your brother under cold water, and after several minutes, he was restored to the living. The nurse knew your brother was rejected by Mina Harker's husband, so being without children of her own; she took him home, and gave him the name Peter and raised him. He knew nothing of his parentage, until I found him..." Dracula's voice broke with emotion once again. "Revered Father..." Peter said grandly. "And my dear older brother, I am so very honoured to meet you at last. My life is complete, I have found my family, I cannot begin to express my joy!"
Dracula smiled proudly at his new-found son. Victor could not believe this turn of events. He turned to the Count.
"Did you tell him everything? What you are, what curse we carry as your sons?" Victor said, his voice rising.
Dracula smiled with a touch of menace. "He knows all."
Peter shrugged. 'It is of no consequence...I rejoice in it, I embrace it....truly brother, it is exilerating!" "Embrace it? Are you mad?" Victor cried. "It has taken all my inner strength to fight it!"
Dracula chose to ignore Victor's declaration. "Peter will now be living here with us Victor, he should be with his family."
Peter smiled. "Brother, we shall get along famously, I promise you." Victor was floored. A full-blooded brother! How in God's name will he explain this to the family? What ramifications will this hold for all concerned? He looked into Peter's eyes, he saw no warmth there, none at all, it chilled Victor to the bone.
The 'Curse of Dracula' continues...he thought to himself with despair. Victor called Edward to the Abbey...He then related the tale of his brother's existence. He conveniently left out Dracula's role in this unbelieveable discovery...he stated the young man showed up on his doorstep, and that he took the young man in.
Victor listened intently, but could not believe it. Edward Van Helsing was quiet for some moments. The concern was plain on his face. Dracula's reach from the grave was long indeed, Edward thought worriedly. "And whose son is he, I suppose?" Edward said quietly.
"I would hazard to guess the same father as mine," Victor said bluntly. "The similarity in looks are startling indeed. This will have to stay between us Edward, as far as the rest of the world knows, he is Harker's son!" "Do not distress yourself Edward," Victor continued. " I shall keep a close and vigulent watch on him. I am concerned he may not be as eager to fight this turmoil as I am. I may need your help somewhere down the road."
"Of course Victor....I shall do anything I can...you know as soon as I tell Jane, she will want the family to meet him..." Edward said quietly.
Victor shook his head. "I know, I will prepare him for that eventuality." That eventuality was about to take place. A week has passed, and at the Harker Estate, Harrison and his wife enjoy a quiet moment one afternoon. Harrison has graciously offered his house for the upcoming family gathering to meet this new member of the family they have heard so much about. It will also give the family a chance to meet another new member of the family, Harrison's and Laura's daughter, who they named 'Mina' after Harrison's mother.
Harrison is still in shock over the news of a brother appearing out of the mist, he has the feeling deep down inside that there is more to this surprising story than what is being told. The evening of the party is here and more of the family arrived. Victor and Harrison talked sadly of the last time they were in this room for a party. The fight with Jonathan Harker and the emotional upheaval of the family.
"Don't dwell on the past brother," Victor stated. "Believe me, it does one no good at all." Peter on the other hand, was spending all his time with Harrison's pretty young wife, Laura. She was utterly charmed and flattered by his intense attentions. She found herself attracted to Peter, very much so. She was drawn to him for reasons she could not explain. Harrison kept watching the exchange closely, and felt his blood start to boil.
'How dare this blackguard of a so-called brother pay such attentions to my wife?' he sneered to himself.
Harrison called out angerily to Peter. "You! What do you think you are doing?"
The room grew very quiet. Edward and Jane turned theri heads at the sound of Harrison's angry tone. Who was he talking to?
Harrison started over toward Peter and Laura with his fist clenched.
"There is something about that young man Peter that gives me the chills..."Jane said quietly to Edward. Thankfully, Carolina and Arthur Carberry made their entrance, and disrupted any threat of a clash.
"Good Evening!" Arthur called merrily. "Carolina and I have announcement since you are all together...she has finally consented to be my wife!"
The room exploded in applause and congratulations. Victor felt as if someone had taken a knife and plunged it into his heart. The sounds of the room were replaced by a deep buzzing in his ears...he could hear the blood rushing through his veins...he felt as he did the night he and Harker came to blows in this very room...he was starting to lose control of his emotions...he did not know his heart could ache so much... Late the next afternoon near sunset; Carolina makes an unexpected and unannounced visit to the Abbey. She found Victor sitting in the alone courtyard, deep in thought....
Carolina stared at Victor longingly, her heart was pounding in her chest at the very sight of him... "Hello Victor, I just had to speak with you...we did not get a chance last night at the party. There is something we must discuss, it is weighing on my mind..." Carolina said gently.
"Yes. Please accept my congratulations, I am sorry I did not express it last night." Victor said flatly. Carolina went over to Victor and began to caress his cheek.
"I did not come here to discuss my engagement as such, I want to talk about us. I want us to be honest with each other Victor, our lives and our happiness depend upon it." Carolina said urgently. "Listen to me Victor and do not interrupt me. I must say this...I have loved you my whole life. Not as a sister loves a brother...and I have lived with the guilt of those feelings for years. I know we are half-brother and sister, but I love you all the same, regardless of society's condemnation of my deep love...." Carolina's voice broke and her lower lip quivered. "I know this is abhorent to you..." Victor did not wait for Carolina to finish, he grabbed her and kissed her with all the love in his heart. His insides were raging, he wanted to scream at her, 'We are not related by blood at all! We can be together!'
Carolina clung to him desparately...she had waited for this her whole life... "Victor, Victor! You DO feel the same! I knew it...sometimes I saw the way you looked at me, but then I would think it is only my imagination..." Carolina cried happily.
Victor pulled away. "This cannot be..." he said hoarsely. "Why? Why ever not?" Carolina cried. "I can break my engagement with Arthur, I can come live with you here...we can be together Victor, in every way!"
Victor's mind began to race. He was sorely tempted, he wanted nothing more than to share his life with Carolina...but reality smacked him square in the face. As long as Dracula stayed at the Abbey, Victor had to protect the family secret...the family curse...and he had to protect Carolina and the rest of his extended family from that curse. The sun was beginning to set, he had to get Carolina out of the Abbey.
"No Carolina, it cannot be done. You must see sense!" Victor said irritably. "Our feelings matter not at all in this instance...You must be married to Carberry and have a proper life...and we cannot see each other alone anymore! Now go at once!" Carolina ran into Victor's arms, she began sobbing most piteously. "Please do not send me away! Victor, I love you so much, I cannot bear it! I need to feel your arms about me..."
Victor's emotions were being battered like waves upon a cliff. He never felt such desolation.
"If you love me, you will go Carolina...and do as I say. You know I speak the truth...it can never be." Peter watched the entire emotional exchange. He hid out of sight, but could hear Victor and Carolina say their tearful good-byes, they whispered words of love desparately in each other ears.
Carolina turned and fled from the courtyard, leaving a dejected Victor. After Carolina left, Peter stepped out of the shadows. "Bravo! Brother, that emotional scene was worthy of Shakespeare! Well done!" Peter laughed cruelly. "You really are too noble for words, if you want the girl, take her!"
Victor turned and hissed, "You will never understand honour and sacrifice! Stay out of my affairs, and you are not to repeat any of this to anyone, including father! And if you do, you will regret it, do you take my meaning?"
"Steady on, brother! Let us not threaten each other over such a subject...I will keep your secret as long as it suits my purposes. Now I must go find father, he is taking me out tonight on his hunt. Should prove to be enjoyable and educational!" Peter sneered.
Victor felt the bile rise in his throat. His brother was embracing his inner demons with relish, it made Victor sick to look at him. The next afternoon, Laura opened the door to find Peter Harker. "Peter! How lovely to see you...Harrison is at the office if you wish to see him..."
Peter smiled handsomely. "My dear, lovely Laura...may I come in?" "I've have actually come to visit you my dear, to thank you for such a wonderful party...and to greet me into the family, you do not know what it means to me." Peter smiled slyly.
Laura could not help staring into those beautiful blue eyes...the room almost began to spin... Suddenly, Peter swept Laura into his arms."You are truly the most magnificent woman I have ever met," Peter said smoothly. "Your beauty is breathtaking...I can hardly breathe..."
Laura found herself practically swooning, she could not help herself...it was if she was in a trance... Peter was very smooth indeed, he knew just what to say and what to do to seduce the poor unsuspecting Laura..his plan was going perfectly...'The woman is weak', he thought smugly to himself, 'This is even easier than father said it would be...' Coming home from work...Harrison walked into his bedroom, he could not believe his eyes... His darling Laura, with his brother...the anguish and hurt were more than he could bear. He cried out; the sound was that of a wounded animal, he turned and walked out.
"Harrison! Wait!" Laura called desparately. Laura quickly dressed and told Peter to leave by the back way. She caught up to Harrison. "Please, my love...I do not know what possessed me...."
Harrison looked at Laura with such hatred and disgust. "You treacherous....the very sight of you sickens me...I have to get out of here before I do something I will regret..." Harrison walked out and left Laura devestated. What had she done? Why did she do it? She didn't care for this Peter...She loved Harrison very much, deeply and completely...why would she hurt him so? She had no explanation for her deception...none at all. Late that night, in the family cemetery at the Harker Estate, a ghostly apparition appears in the graveyard...it is Mina...long lost love of both the Count and Jonathan Harker...her spirit is restless as it glides about the yard, she is tormented in death..she is angry and frustrated...her deep love affair with Dracula was interrupted...terminated......she blamed everyone, even her children.. Mina's ghost wanders into the house and into the master bedroom, where Laura sleeps alone. She stood and began laughing cruelly at her daugher-in-law. It pleased Mina to see Laura suffer such torment.. 'Why should anyone be happy and content in love, if I could not?'
Mina did not spare a thought for her tortured son, Harrison....the ghost and her cruel laughter slowly faded away.... After of a few weeks of cold silence and even colder stares, Laura appraoched Harrison, to try and make him understand... "Please Harrison! You must let me try to explain! I love you so much...please try and forgive me..I do not know why I did it, I don't even like your brother.." Laura's voice cracked with emotion. "It was like I had no control over my actions..." "What kind of idiot do you take me for? No control!? I know what I saw.." Harrison spat. 'I thought what we had was special, Laura..now it is broken, you have broken it.."
Laura began to cry softly.
"I do not want to discuss this anymore!" Harrison thundered. "Leave me alone!!" A few days later, Harrison invited his dear brother over for advice. Victor smiled as he was shown into the front parlour. "Harrison! I am so glad you invited me over, it has been awhile! Where is Laura and the baby?"
"Laura took the baby to the park...Victor I have a grave matter to discuss with you, I need your advice brother..." Harrison said sadly. Harrison related the whole sorry tale, the betrayal, the hurt....Victor could not believe what Harrison was telling him. His mouth hung open in shock...what a dispicable act! Peter...that wretched....he did this on purpose! To cause such misery..Victor began to seethe inwardly. No doubt father had a hand in this... "God! This house is cursed!" Harrison cried passionately. "Can anyone ever be happy here? The ghosts of the past haunt us still!! The world is miserable!"
Victor felt such sympathy for his tortured brother. It is true, would any of them ever be happy? "My brother," Victor began gently."Do not make the mistake of Jonathan Harker, he let his life be ruled by hatred and jealousy...he made our mother's and Jane's life here a misery...and us children as well..you know this to be true...can you find it in your heart to forgive Laura?"
Harrison thought for a moment. 'I....I don't know..." After Victor left, Harrison went to give his beloved daughter a bath. He thought very carefully about Victor's wise words...he did not want his daughter to grow up in a house full of hate. Yes, he was deeply hurt, but he did still love his wife, very much if truth be told...he would have to give this a lot of thought... Several weeks have past...Another silent dinner where no one looked at each other or spoke. Laura decided to just come out with her news.
"Harrison...I am expecting a child, I am fairly certain it is not yours, seeing we have been apart for weeks..." Laura's voice quivered. "I will pack and leave as soon as possible...no words can express the sorrow I feel..." her voice trailed off. Harrison ran over to Laura. "This house has seen enough despair and unhappiness, I do not want you to leave Laura, I do love you, truly...while I cannot forget, I will try my hardest to forgive you". Harrison hugged Laura close. 'I will accept the child as my own, whether it is or not... there is nothing more to be said."
She smiled, no wonder she loved this glorious man. She vowed she would do everything she could to make him happy in the years to come. It is a Sunday evening at the Van Helsing's; Jane and Edward are relaxing quietly in the solarium of their home, when suddenly in mid-conversation, a large bat appears before them both. The bat hovers over the couple most menancingly.... Dracula appears in a haze of smoke....after all these years, he is face to face with Edward Van Helsing, the man who vowed to destroy him utterly...
"Van Helsing..." Dracula hissed. "I have returned to exact my revenge on you...you are responsible for my beloved Mina's death...now it is time for you to pay....and pay you shall..." Edward immediately jumped up in front of Jane, as if to protect her, for deep down in Edward's soul, he had a sick feeling Dracula had not come for him....
"Leave us alone, Count...if there is even a spark of humanity in you, leave us be..." Edward cried. "Now you will know what it is like to have the woman you love taken from you..." Dracula hissed.
"Stay away from her!" Edward yelled. All of the sudden a pain shot up Edward's arm...he started to choke, gasping for every breath..'My God,' Edward thought inwardly. 'Am I having a heart attack?' the room began to grow dim, the pain in his chest was overwhelming...
Jane screamed and tried to get away from the Count to no avail.... Edward fell to the floor, the pain was unbearable...his last lucid moments were hearing Jane's terrified screams as Dracula plunged his fangs into her neck...."Jane..." he croaked feebly.
Jane immediately fainted. The Count quickly whisked Jane into his arms and in a puff of smoke, they were both gone.... It is just by chance Victor stopped by the Van Helsing's later...he found Edward on the floor. Victor dropped to his knees, and felt for a pulse, it was very faint. 'He still lives! Thank God!' Victor almost began to weep with joy. Just as he was about to lift Edward and take him to Harrison's nearby..Edward's eyes fluttered open..."Dracula.."he said hoarsly."He has Jane..." Edward immediately passed out again. With Edward resting comfortably and being attended to by the Doctor..Victor now knew he could no longer put off telling Harrison and Carolina. He called them both together and began at the beginning, relating the sad, sorry tale of the intense relationship between Mina and Dracula, the fact they were his parents and Peter's. Now came the hard part...the fact that Count Dracula was a vampire, and the curse he and Peter carries...the evil...
Harrison and Carolina were speechless.... Harrison was the first to respond...he patted his brother reassuredly. "It explains so much Victor, the hatred of father, your turmoil...what a burden you carried, all to protect us. What will happen now? Where have they taken Jane?"
Victor sighed deeply. "I must leave at once for Transylvania, I am sure they went there. Promise me you will look after Edward and his son?"
Harrison vowed he would. Harrison no sooner left the room when Carolina reached out and slapped Victor with all her might.
"How could you?" she cried angerily. 'You KNEW we were not related by blood, and you would have stood by and let me marry Arthur Carberry...knowing this!!!"
Victor sputtered, trying to form an explanation. Carolina would have none of it. She stormed out of the house. It was all too much for Victor...his anguish and sadness, spilled out, he could not hold it back any longer...
"Hear me father! I will not let you get away with this! I will find you, and you will pay, you and that creature of a brother! On this, I vow!" After many days of travel, Victor located Castle Dracula high in the Carpathian Mountains...it was if he were drawn to it. He found Peter guarding Dracula's coffin.
"I will not let you harm Father!" Peter cried "I will kill you first, my brother..and not think twice about it.."
"So be it...brother.." Victor spat. "I will not let you or father cause anymore harm...if it is a fight to the death you want, then a fight to the death you shall have!" Peter did not hesitate, he slammed the lid shut on the sleeping Count and immediately attacked his brother, the fight went on for ages, finally Victor was able to gain the upper hand and in a quick movement without remorse or regret, he quieted his brother...forever. Victor quickly grabbed a torch off the wall and tossed it on the coffin of the sleeping Count. Victor began to cry softly. "Good-bye...Father.." inside the coffin the muffled agonizing screams of Dracula pierced the silent night air.
Victor stayed and watched the morbid scene, until Peter and his father were reduced to ashes...he then found Jane and carried her out of the burning castle.... After giving Jane time to recover, the pair travelled back home. Victor safely settled Jane at Harrison's and Laura's home, with a recovering Edward. Edward has to fight back from his debilitating stroke, but with the love of his family, will no doubt do so.
Victor has returned to Carfax Abbey. That night while tending the fire in his library he heard a voice, it was Carolina. 'Victor..." He turned to find her standing before him. "I have broken my engagement to Arthur," Carolina said quietly. "I am so sorry for my behaviour when you told us about...about...Oh Victor, I love you so, say we can be together..I don't care if I wither and die before you, I just want us to be together, now...while we can..." Victor needed no further prompting, he kissed Carolina deeply. Yes, they had only a short time together in his life span of 300 years or more, but they would make the best of them...Victor has found happiness at last.... In the rubble of Castle Dracula...two wolves have taken up residence...and are seen about the property late at night walking the perimeter, almost as if they are protecting something or someone....Their mournful howls can be heard for miles...
The End...(or is it?

Oh my God. Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am soo sad to see it end, and your attention to detail is fabulous I noticed the painting of Vladimer(sp) anyway the original bloke who was in a huge castle, (I just cannot remember his name!) Anyway. It was absolutley amazing, I think you should do a spin off from the wolves, as you said, "the end (or is it?)" Brilliant absolutley brilliant. If I could rate more than 5.0 I would give you 10!!!!!! I'll give you my own rating,
10,000/10,000!!!
PS An idea for a spin off story, it would be interesting to have a female vampire, as you have had males for the Dracula series. Just a thought it's up to you whether or not you do a spin off.

Narrative justice is fulfilled, not least in the brief, ignominious, and violently terminated career of the repulsive Peter, and by the end I was not sorry to see the demise of Count "Heathcliff" Dracula as well. I always appreciate a sympathetic Van Helsing, considering what Hollywood has done to that character... Victor is an admirable hero, and Harrison a well-characterised support. Someone should film this.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, Karen.
There is nothing more to be said that hasn't been said above. And I'm very glad you decided to continue the saga.

I am so happy to see how nobel Victor was, and certainly Harrison has proven to be a real man, and a wise one. Carolina and Victor
= the most adorable couple ever! Great job, really great job!
