SON OF DRACULA

Part 4 of the Dracula Saga...Part 1 (0ct 31) Part 2 (Dec 21) Part 3 (Feb 6)
Again, I am following no particular book or movie, this is my own story.
A few weeks have passed since the heated, emotional episode at Harrison's birthday at the Harker's. Victor is still resting comfortably at Edward Van Helsing's home.

Victor is still trying to come to terms with all he has learned about his mother and Dracula...and the facts of his existence, and his impending future.
Edward and Victor have grown closer these last weeks, Victor has become much like the son Edward never had. He felt a growing sense of protectiveness toward Victor. Edward was also beginning to understand the inward struggle Victor was going through. In essence, Victor was a decent young man (thanks to Jane's upbringing) but a young man who will be battling with his inner demons for years to come.
FInally; one evening, Edward brought up the subject of school.
"You have brooded long enough Victor, you must return to school and finish your education. You must try and put some of this behind you and concentrate on your studies..."
Victor thought for awhile. "Yes, I suppose you are right, I will leave as soon as I can make arrangements."
It is just a few weeks later and Jane has managed to slip away to Edward's home. He has informed Jane that Victor has returned to school.
"I am glad he has gone back to school, but please Edward, I cannot sleep until I know what it is that tore the family apart! Jonathan is quite impossible, and will not speak of it!"
"All I will tell you is this, Victor is not Jonathan's son, he found out a few years into the marriage, he has despised the boy ever since. You must keep this to yourself, Jane..do not tell anyone, not even the children!"

Jane gasped. "That explains a great deal...my poor Victor! But there is more you are not telling me..."
Edward could not hold back and he reached up and caressed Jane's face. "You must know how I feel, how I have felt toward you these last 10 years or more..."

"Edward...please..."Jane pleaded. "I am still married..."

"Yes...in name only! You do not love Jonathan...how long must this torture go on?" Edward cried passionately.
All Edward's resolve and his gentlemen's code finally gave way. Ten years of frustration bubbled over. He grabbed Jane and kissed her. They kissed each other with a longing they both could no longer deny. At last, Jane forced herself to pull away from Edward. "Please Edward, do not kiss me anymore... I do love you...but it is to no avail. I cannot abandon the children...even for love...they need me."

Edward smiled. "You do love me...you do not know how long I have waited to hear you say it..."
Edward reached up to caress Jane's face again.

"Edward, you are trying to change the subject..."Jane said firmly. "There is more you are not telling me with regards to Victor!!"

"Perhaps, But I will not betray a confidence, even for you my dear..." Edward said gently.
"Then Edward, there is nothing more to be said. Tell Victor I was asking after him."
Jane turned and walked out and left a dejected Edward.

"Jane..." he said painfully.

Almost two years have now passed, Victor is now almost 19, and hard at work on his studies. One afternoon, Harrison showed up at Victor's university for a surprise visit.

"Hello Victor..." Harrison said. Victor could not believe his ears...it has been so long...
Victor immediately jumped out of his chair and ran to his brother and embraced him warmly. "My God! Harrison! You don't know how I longed to see you! Whatever are you doing here?"

Harrison laughed. "I am going to be attending this university! Father has no idea you are here, so it has worked out perfectly! I'll be your roommate, if you want me!"
Victor was elated. "Wonderful! I can't think of anything better! Tell me, how are Carolina, and Mother? I have had a few letters...I miss them so!"

Harrison smiled warmly. "My dear brother, Carolina never stops talking about you! She is growing into quite a beauty! And Mother....she is well, but has such a look of sadness. Her and Father are still not getting along..."
Victor quickly changed the subject. He certainly did not want to discuss Jonathan Harker.
"So little brother, what will you be studying? What profession will you bless with your talent?" Victor teased good-naturedly.

"Well, I thought to follow you and Uncle Edward into the Sciences, but I have decided to follow Father into Law. I thought it would please him. 'Harker and Son'. I think I will like the law immensely!"
Victor smiled broadly. Things were starting to look up. Having his beloved brother at his side will help dampen the inner pain and turmoil he felt. Though Victor now knew they were only half-brothers in reality, it did not lessen the love he had for Harrison. He was sorry to hear of Jane's sadness. That wonderful lady who loved him and brought him up, something Victor would never forget.

It was some months later and Victor came back to Van Helsing's for a visit. As soon as Carolina heard Victor was home on break, she rushed right over to the Van Helsing's.

"My dear! How you have grown, and so beautiful!" Victor exclaimed while he gave Carolina a friendly hug.
Victor looked at Carolina's beautiful face, she was chattering away, but Victor heard nothing she was saying. He found her very attractive...it warmed his heart to look at her. But he must keep up the pretense that they were actually related by blood. Carolina must never know the secret of his parentage. He was deep in thought when Carolina said, "Victor, are you listening to a word I am saying?" She laughed.

'I'm sorry my dear, my mind wandered...still thinking of my studies, I suppose."
Victor began to talk about university...but Carolina hardly heard a word. Her feelings for Victor had not abated at all....she loved him even more. She must keep her deepest feelings secret, she did not want to ruin what relationship they had...to feel this way toward a brother, even a half-brother...Carolina put the thought to the back of her mind. Victor and Carolina said their goodbyes and he watched her leave. He took a deep breath. He needed to put some space between himself and Carolina. He knew if he kept seeing her, his face would betray his feelings. Which to his great concern; were taking over his thoughts. After Caroline left, Edward thought it was time things were explained a little more thoroughly. He told Victor more of Mina and Dracula and the letter she left him.

"I have not read it, but you should have it now, you soon will be 20. Here it is, I will give you some privacy." Edward said.
Victor insisted Edward stay. They both sat and Victor read the letter. He put it down and sat silent for a few moments.

"My mother speaks of a property, Carfax Abbey, near the Asylum. She states my father bought this and now it passes to me. I will not have to live off your charity any longer Edward..." Victor's voice got quiet. "There is a substantial sum of money as well. And castles in Transylvania.."
Edward's mouth opened in surprise. Well, Mina and Dracula certainly planned things! And Carfax Abbey! How could he forget? Harker went to Dracula's castle to close the Abbey deal, that is how this chain of tragic events began!!
Edward cleared his throat. "It is a bit of a distance from here, an hour or so by carriage..it is also somewhat isolated. The property must be in disrepair. Are you sure you want to live there?"
Victor thought for a moment. "Yes, Edward I shall. As soon as I get my degree I will move there. It will give me the privacy I crave. I need to start living my life....such as it is." he said sadly.
Edward shook his head. "Whatever you wish. Just do not cut yourself off entirely from the people that love you, Victor."
That night, Victor tossed and turned and dreamt of Dracula for the first time in several years. Dracula appeared at his bedside as before, he looked at his son intensely. After some moments he began to speak to Victor in hushed tones.... "Hear me my son...I cannot rest and be at peace until I am buried at the tomb at Carfax Abbey. My son, I beg you to grant me this request...Let your father be at peace..." Dracula whispered quietly. Victor woke with a start and jumped out of bed. His anguish was overwelming. The dream seemed so real! Obviously, Dracula would haunt his dreams until he was buried properly, not in some unmarked grave in the woods. Victor decided it was the one thing he could do for his father. The next morning, Victor informed Edward of his plan to see Dracula buried at Carfax Abbey.
"I want no part of this!" Edward exclaimed. "Leave him be! It is better he remain undisturbed!"
"Edward, he is my father and I will grant him this request!" Victor thundered.
Late the next evening, Victor and Edward went over to the Harker estate and began the task of exhuming Dracula.
Edward felt very uneasy...there was no talking Victor out of this.
'I never should have told him Dracula was buried here!' Edward thought angerily to himself.
"I will say this one last time Victor, this is a terrible mistake, I feel it deep in my bones. Come, let us fill in the hole and speak no more of this...It is not too late." Edward said desparately.

Victor's anger flashed. "It is you and Harker that killed him, the least you can do is help me with this task. He is after all, my father!"
"Calm yourself Victor! I will go get the wagon and the ropes...If you will not heed my warning, fine...let us get this ghoulish task over with!"

Carfax Abbey....It was early the next morning before Victor arrived with Dracula's coffin to his newly inherited property. It was as isolated as Edward had said, but for Victor, it would be perfect. Victor placed Dracula's coffin in the Abbey's tomb. Now his father could be at rest. Edward warned him not to open the casket under any circumstances, but Victor's curiosity got the best of him, as it did Jonathan Harker all those years before. Victor was shocked! After 15 years, the body was incredibly well preserved, it was if Dracula was in a deep sleep! He did not even look deceased! And what was that sticking out of his torso? It was a large wooden stake, pounded in so deep it went right through Dracula and into the casket. It was if he was pinned to the coffin. Without thinking, Victor reached in and began to pull the stake out. Dracula's eyes flew open and he sat upright in the coffin. Victor cried out in surprise. What had he done? The very thing Edward bade him not to do! But deep down, he was secretly pleased his father was again among the living, as such. After a few moments, Dracula stood, somewhat weakly and climbed out of the coffin that had been his home for over 16 years. Victor was frozen to the spot. He did not know what to do or say! This creature was his father! Victor was stunned. He could not speak. He could only stare into those black undead eyes of his father's.
"Victor my son, how well you look. Thank you for releasing me from that insufferable slumber. You followed my directions beyond my expectations!" Dracula said in a quiet tone.
"So you planned this? You wanted me to release you? to what purpose, Father?" Victor demanded.

"Your mother is dead, my beloved Mina. I seek revenge for her death. All we wanted was to be left alone, but Harker and Van Helsing would not let us be. Now they will pay for their interference!!" Dracula cried passionately.
"You listen to me father, You will not take your vengance on either one of them, nor anyone in the family! We have all been through enough over the years, we do not need anymore grief and despair!" Victor roared angerily. "You will not get in my way, my son! Since the family means so much to you, I will only take my revenge on one person, but you must choose who it will be, and do it soon!"
"Choose?" Victor cried. "I will not! What a wretched thing to ask of me!"
'If you will not choose, then I will!" Dracula hissed. "And I may choose someone you love deeply, do not cross me!"
Dracula grabbed Victor and hugged him close. " Let us not quarrel Victor, I have waited so long for us to be reunited, and I do not want us to argue. We will not discuss it anymore tonight. Come, let us go into the castle, we have a lot of catching up to do." Dracula headed out of the tomb, leaving a extremely worried Victor.
.
"What in God's name have I done? I have unleashed the very horror I have fought so hard to supress in my own soul...I truly am cursed, and now I have cursed the family as well..."
A few weeks have passed, Jonathan Harker is in his law office, toiling away until the late hours. He spends a lot of time in his office, home holds no contentment for him. Even his children bring little joy to his life. He is weary and tired..... A puff of smoke and a flutter of wings, and Dracula appears in Jonathan's office.
"Harker..." he hissed in a most dreadful voice.
Dracula could not wait for his son to make any decision, he knew deep down Victor would not choose.. The Count's hatred of Harker was too strong, he had to act....now.
Jonathan leaped out of his chair. He is genuinely shocked and dismayed at Dracula's appearance.

"You! How...what..." Jonathan sputtered. "We destroyed you! By what evil have you returned?"
"Harker, you are responsible for my beloved Mina's death, you treated Victor like dirt beneath your feet, you have been nothing but a scourge to me. It is time to rid myself of that scourge.
Hear me Harker; before you go to your death know this....I will bring nothing but misery to your family as the years pass. And know you alone are responsible for your family's anguish and torture!"
Jonathan stared straight at Dracula without any fear. "Do your worst, Count. I could not care less what you do to me. But my children are blameless. Leave them be, they are nothing to you." Jonathan said wearily.

"You mean like Victor was blameless? Sorry Harker, it is too late...." Dracula roared.
In one swift movement, Dracula lifted Jonathan with one hand, until his feet were no longer touching the floor. With one quick flick of his wrist, Dracula broke Jonathan Harker's neck, he let him drop to a heap on the floor.

Dracula stared at his enemy for sometime....then he walked away.
Five long years have past since Jonathan Harker was found dead late one night in his office. His death was ruled a homicide...but nothing ever came of the case.

Jonathan is at rest next to Mina in the family graveyard at the estate.
Harrison Harker is now a young Solicitor, running his father's law office, now in his 20's, Harrison has met a young woman, Laura Carberry....they fall in love and are married.....Laura wastes no time in remodelling the Harker Estate to suit her needs. Jane Harker, after a sufficient period of mourning and some persuading, finally gave in to her feelings for Edward Van Helsing. Jane and Carolina were eager to leave the Harker household behind to start a new life.
Now into his early fifties, Edward never dreamed he would find love, marriage and a son, Edward Jr. at such a stage in his life.
Carolina has grown into a beautiful young lady, she is being pursued romantically by Laura Carberry's older brother, Arthur. She has only seen Victor 3 or 4 times over the past 5 years, at family functions. Her love for Victor has not lessened over time, but it is a secret she holds close to her heart. Victor is a part-time professor at the University, he keeps to himself in the eerie 'Carfax Abbey'. And he guards the Count's presence very diligently. Victor had many questions after the death of Jonathan Harker, but he chose not to pursue the matter...he did not want to know the details.... Nor does Victor question the Count's comings and goings various times through the course of a week, if Victor is in a state of denial, then so be it.

Count Dracula himself has been keeping a low profile these past five years, while he has been getting to know his beloved son, he also keeps a silent watch on the rest of the family...waiting for his moment...
One evening at teatime, Dracula keeps Victor company.
"I believe, my son, it is time to pay a visit to Van Helsing. He must pay for his interference and his complicity in your mother's incarceration and untimely death..."

Victor sighed. "Father, we have discussed this; Edward Van Helsing was more of a father to me than Harker ever was, as long as I am alive, you are to leave him be."
"I will grant you that, Victor. It will be as you wish, I will leave Van Helsing alone."
Victor smiled at his father and continued with his small meal.
Dracula sneered inwardly. 'There are other ways to get at Van Helsing.....many others...' he said to himself.
On the occasion of Edward Junior's third birthday, Victor decided to accept Jane and Edward's kind invitation to a birthday dinner. After greeting Edward at the door, Victor walked into the parlour to find Carolina chatting quite amiably with a young man.

A deep pain tore through his heart as he watch the exchange.
Carolina immediately ran into Victor's arms, it had been over a year since she had seen him. She hugged him close. "Victor! dear brother! I am so glad you came, it will make the joyous celebration complete!"

Victor smiled weakly.
Carolina made the introductions. "Arthur Carberry, this is my brother, Victor Harker."
Victor took Arthur's hand and gave it a firm handshake. "I am her half-brother actually, very good to meet you."

Edward walked into the room. 'Carolina, introducing your intended to your brother are you?" he smiled.
"Uncle Edward! Please! Do forgive my uncle's teasing, gentlemen." Carolina said firmly.
Victor was silently relieved. Carolina to get married? It would be more than his heart could bear.
Arthur looked at Carolina and said seriously, "All I am waiting on is an answer from you, my dear. I am most patient."
After dinner was over and Arthur Carberry made his excuses, Victor found Carolina sitting alone in the garden.

"Carolina! I wondered where you got to. Are you alright, my dear?" Victor questioned.
Carolina sat silently for a time in the twilight. "Uncle Edward and Mother wish me to say yes to Arthur Carberry, they say it is a good match. I....I do not know what to do. Victor help me; tell me not to marry Arthur and I will not!"
Victor sat very still. His heart was raging. He wanted nothing more than to take Carolina in his arms and tell her the truth, they were not related, that he loved her with every fiber of his being...but he could not. Carolina can never know of his parentage, or of Dracula's return.
"He seems a decent sort, you must do as Uncle Edward and your mother say, they know best Carolina....I am not qualified to give such advice. I must go, I have much to do to prepare for my lecture tomorrow. Good-bye my dear."

Victor immediately got up and left a speechless Carolina.
Carolina watched Victor's departure with abject despair. As soon as he was out of sight, the tears began to fall. Her heart was breaking. She loved Victor and no other, but he was her half-brother! It can never be! Her wails of heartbreak echoed in the still twilight. "Ahh, you are home Victor, have a lovely time at your family gathering?" Dracula sneered.

"Not now father, I am not in the mood to talk of the Van Helsing's or anything else at the moment. I wish to be alone." Victor said wearily.

"Not yet my son. Come. I have someone I wish for you to meet..." Dracula said softly.
"Victor, this is your brother....Peter. Your mother's child did not die in that wretched asylum, I have found him...like yourself...he is the 'Son of Dracula'....."

Dracula began to laugh menancingly. The evil laughter echoed throughout the Abbey.....in the distance, wolves howled in response.....

There was alot to take in this chapter, but as long as you read the previous chapters it is fantastic & flows well, very good use of thoughtbubbles, they blended well with your storyline, and the heartbreaking story that is playing out between Victor & Carolina is really sad - but grips you! Excellant photos also. I am anxious to see what the next chapter holds in store for us! Thanks for sharing again, and thank you for the personal invitation to read it - 5 rating from me once again.
