Kate Dunn has just secured a position of underhouse parlour maid at the Blenheim Estate. Her first job since leaving the orphanage. She hesitates on the front walkway....what will the future bring?
Cadbury looked down his long nose. "I see you have your uniform...and servants must go around back and use the servant's entrance. Do not knock at this door again!" "I am Kate, the new..."
"No time!!" the cook bellowed. "Lady Charlotte wants tea servin'...now! Grab the tray and get up those stairs!" Kate stepped nervously into the front parlour...her knees were knocking. Please do not let me drop anything...Kate thought to herself... "What are you doing, you stupid girl?" Lady Charlotte screeched. "Serve the tea, and be quick about it! I do not like to wait!" "Honestly Mother.." Arthur said calmly. "Must you berate the poor girl already? She's only been here a few minutes..." "I'm Arthur Blenheim..." he smiled..."Please, do not be nervous, you will fit in fine here..." Kate stared into the handsome face. She has never seen such kind, blue eyes... Lady Charlotte watches the exchange closely. She begins to sneer inwardly. No son of mine will associate with the hired help! 9 hours later, a weary Kate makes her way to her room. "Almost as dreary as the orphanage..."Kate mused. "But at least I have the room to myself..." Kate lights a fire, to try and ward off the dampness. As the days and weeks pass...Kate found herself working 10 hour days, 6 days a week. With only a half day off on Sunday. She was doing the work of two maids, as Lady Charlotte was not only of a nasty disposition, but was cheap, as well. On Sunday afternoons, Kate went to the nearby Tarlington Park...just to sit and relax, anything to get out of that house and away from Lady Charlotte and her never ceasing demands and quick temper... "Why Kate!" Arthur cried. "How lovely to run into you here...do you come to the park often?" "Mr. Arthur...I have not seen you in weeks!"
"I have been away visiting my Uncle, at my mother's insistence.." Arthur stated. "They are after me to take a commisson in the Navy..." Kate found herself utterly charmed by Arthur's easy going manner...he had many humorous stories...and even though they were from different classes, they found much to talk about. Arthur cried, "You are a dear, sweet girl, and I have never had such an enjoyable afternoon. Kate, would you do me the honour of accompanying me to the Layton Ball Saturday night?" Kate was stunned speechless. This must be a cruel joke..."But Mr. Arthur...I have nothing to wear to a ball..."
"Stuff and nonsense..." Arthur exclaimed. "Leave all the arrangements to me.." Later that afternoon, Arthur informs his mother of his choice of companion for the Ball.
"Arthur, my dear boy, have you gone mad? You cannot take a maid to the Ball...the scandal..it just isn't done!" "Mother, you know I do not care for that class business...she is a sweet girl and I enjoy her company, she will be the belle of the ball..."
Lady Charlotte began to turn purple. Her rage boiling over. "You will not shame this family!" she cried. "I forbid this! I am going to dismiss her and send her away!" "All right mother, that is about enough..." Arthur said firmly through clenched teeth. "You forget who is the man of this house, and I will not have Kate turned out onto the street. You are to leave that poor girl alone...we are going to the ball and that is final." Arthur left the room. Charlotte fumed inwardly. "I'll get rid of that little miss if it's the last thing I ever do...I will not let my son sully himself with the lower classes! Not my Arthur!" The night of the ball has arrived. Arthur waits patiently in the music room for Kate's entrance.... Arthur is taken aback by Kate's beauty. He gently kisses her hand. " You are even more beautiful than I imagined....your carriage awaits..." Arthur's predection is right, Kate is the belle of the ball...her beauty captivating every man in the room... Arthur dances every dance with Kate...his eyes never leaving her beautiful face... "You truly are the most beautiful woman here tonight Kate, do not let anyone tell you any different...you are breathtaking..." Arthur and Kate dance on, close and long into the night...Kate has never been so happy..."I feel like a fairy tale princess..I wish this night could last forever..." she thought to herself dreamily. Later that night, Kate and Arthur arrive back at the manor...Arthur softly caresses Kate and whispers..."I am falling for you, my dear..tonight you have captured my heart...let's go into my rooms where we can talk in private..." Kate is smitten...how can she refuse...her head is swimming... The room is swirling about Kate at a breakneck speed...what is she doing......everything went dark... Morning breaks at the Blenheim Estate...My God...What Have I done? Kate said softly to herself. I will have to leave..I will have no job, no where to live... Kate kept busy all day with her many chores, trying to avoid both Arthur and Lady Charlotte...she needs time to think... Later that evening, Arthur called his mother and Kate into the parlour..."I have news...my commission has come through...I knew it was coming, but I never dreamed so soon, I leave on the morning tide on the H.M.S. Indifatigable. I do not know how long I will be gone.." "Now Mother, listen carefully...I love Kate, and we are to be married as soon as I get leave...she is to stay here with you, not as a maid, but as the woman I am going to marry. You are to treat her with respect and kindness while I am away..." "My dear son, you may rely on me, I shall care for her as my own daughter..." Lady Charlotte smiled. "we shall keep each other company until you return...I promise I will do my best..."
Poor Arthur, so kind in nature, did not doubt his mother's word. "Goodbye my darling...I wish I had time to propose to you properly, know I love you, and will write you when and if I can..."
Kate cried softly, "Please don't leave me here, your mother hates me..."
Arthur hugged Kate closer. "She gave me her word, all will be well..." Arthur's carriage was barely out of sight, when Lady Charlotte wheeled and slapped Kate with all her might.
"You are to leave this house immediately and never come back! As long as there is breath in my body, you will never marry my son! He may be gone for years! I'll not have you in my house a minute longer! I give you no reference, no thought for your well being...and if you do not leave now, I will have Cadbury throw you out!". "But...I have no family...no place to go..." Kate cried.
"That.." Lady Charlotte said, "Is your misfortune. Cadbury, throw this...thing....into the streets..." 3 months have passed, life has not been kind to Kate. She managed to rent a ramshackle lean-to in one of the worst districts of London. She works at a rag pickers during the day and takes in sewing when she can...her life is desolate. Things are about to worsen for poor Kate...not only can she barely feed herself, but she will have another to consider very soon.... The landlord, Charlie Nolan drops by. "Thought I'd check on ya...and I found this, thought the baby might like it..."
Kate smiled weakly. "you're that kind Charlie, please stay for tea..." "What about that fancy man of yours.." Charlie asked. "Can't you get a hold of the bloke and tell 'im what situation you are in?".
Kate sighed deeply. "I tried...his ship cannot be reached..and his mother will have nothing to do with me..." her voice trailed off wearily. "You are one step away from the workhouse.." Charlie exclaimed. "you've got to let me help you...why don't you marry me, I can't give you much..."
"Charlie, you are a dear friend, but I cannot marry, I am promised to Arthur. I must wait for his return." Kate smiled warmly. "I thank you for the asking..." Almost 2 years have passed, no word of Arthur's whereabouts...Kate has had to try to keep a roof over her head and keep herself and her twin girls fed. The daily struggle of life in London's east end is taking it's toll.... Meanwhile, almost at the same moment at the Blenheim Estate, Arthur arrives..his ship finally back in port...
"My darling son, I am so pleased you are home safe...and only one letter from you the whole two years!" "Where's Kate?" Arthur exclaimed. "I am anxious to see her..."
"I am afraid, dear boy...I have some news that will shock you...Kate ran off with a tradesman, not one month after you left for sea...I had no way to contact you..." Lady Charlotte said soberly and convincingly. "Mother! In God's name, what are you saying? This is absurd! I don't believe it for a minute! Where is she...and if you do not tell me, I will call Cadbury in here, and get the truth from him..."
Lady Charlotte said firmly. "I have told you the truth...I knew she was no good the moment she arrived here. Now, you should forget that trollop and move on with your life..." "Cadbury, you have been here many years. You served my father, now you serve me. If you value your job, you will answer this question truthfully...Where is Kate?"
Cadbury, having enough of Lady Charlotte's tirades, said firmly. "Sir, your mother turned her out into the streets the very day you left..the last I heard she was in the east end of London..." Arthur said softly, "Mother, I am deeply hurt. You knew how I felt, what my intentions were toward Kate...and you stood there and lied to me...your only son..."
" I want you gone, Mother. I don't care where you go, just get out of my sight. Don't worry, I'll take care of you financially...but I never want to see you again."
Lady Charlotte sobbed uncontrollably. Lady Charlotte turned and spewed her rage toward her son. She cursed him and Kate both.
Arthur said sadly, "You are a twisted, bitter old woman...I pity you. I am going to find Kate, when I return...do not be here." Kate readies Lydia for bed..."she has her father's eyes" Kate thought warmly. "Oh, Arthur, Arthur...I can't go on much longer...where are you?". Kate begins to sob, the tears streaming down her face...she feels so ill, and so tired...how can she go on? After weeks of searching and money spent on tips, Arthur finally tracked down Kate to the Seven Dials District. When he sees the filth and squalour Kate has been subjected to, he quietly curses his mother. "Kate.." Arthur said softly.
Kate's heart leapt. "Arthur...please, you cannot see me like this..." Arthur ran and hugged Kate close..."I have found you, my darling....that's all I care about...You are to come home with me, and be nursed back to health.."
"But your mother..." Kate said weakly.
"Forget her.." Arthur said firmly. "She is out of our lives..." "All of us, Arthur?" Kate led Arthur into the next room. "Your daughters..." her voice trailed off...
Arthur hugged little Lorena close. "Oh my Kate, what you have gone through...what you all have gone through..." Arthur began to cry softly. "All will be well....all will be well..." Time has passed, Kate is fully recovered physically and emotionally from her ordeal...Happily married and settled in at Blenheim estate...the family gathers in the parlour Christmas Eve.
"All is well, my love..." Arthur smiled. "Happy Christmas to us all..."

The story was beautiful too, I was sobbing through as I was reading.
I identified a couple of things from sussissoogoodsims site (I love that site too!) but can you tell me where is Kate's everyday hairstyle from? I mean that with one braid on the back.
