Another installment (this is part 3) of the Dracula Family story... Part 1 (Oct 31) Part 2 (Dec 21). Again, this is my own story, I am not following any particular book or movie... Dracula still rests beneath the ground in a secluded part of the woods on the Harker's vast estate. The grass has never really grown back over the spot; in fact, the ground looks almost burnt. A lone wolf is often seen lingering about the exact location of the mysterious burial. Almost as if he were guarding it. The wolf's mournful howls can be heard many a late night, ringing in the cool night air. As for Mina, she has now spent 3 months at the Carfax Asylum. She still goes in and out of a catatonic state. The overwhelming loss of Dracula has yet again turned her senses.
Dr. Edward Van Helsing has arrived at the facility to discuss her condition with Dr. Westerly. "So, no improvement, Dr. Westerly?" Edward inquired.
"No, it is a daily struggle to get her to eat, she has lost a shocking amount of weight. Also Edward, I must inform you that upon examination, we have ascertained she is with child."
Edward cursed silently under his breath. "As I have told you Dr. Westerly, her husband Jonathan has washed his hands of the woman and her many problems, I will certainly give him the update, but I am not very hopeful he will have any imput to offer. I will let you know what he decides."
Dr. Westerly sighed deeply. "Very sad I dare say, very sad situation indeed." Edward reluctantly brought up the subject at their very next meeting, their weekly chess game. He gave Jonathan all the information he had.
Jonathan sat very quietly for a moment. "Deal with it Edward, I do not want to hear of this again."
Edward said urgently, "The child may be yours..."
Jonathan cut Edward off. "Ha! I highly doubt it, and I'll not have another spawn of that creature in my house!" He spat maliciously. "Well, it is no more than I expected," Edward thought to himself. "I'll have to inform Dr. Westerly tomorrow. And the child? Orphanage, workhouse...not many options this day and age..." Edward sighed deeply. Some months later, Dr. Westerly showed up at Edward's home.
"Edward, I hope you don't mind, your maid let me in. I have a matter of grave importance to discuss with you."
"What a surprise! Of course, dear fellow, come in!" Edward exclaimed.
"I am afraid I bear sad tidings. Considering the circumstances, I thought I would consult with you. Mina Harker has died in childbirth. We did everything we could, but she simply lost the will to live."
Edward was silent for a moment. "And the child?" "He did not survive. I was hoping Edward, you could break the news to Mr. Harker. It would sound better from a close friend."
"Of course," Edward said quietly. "I shall go over right away".
Dr. Westerly passed Edward a letter. "This was written by Mina in one of her rare lucid moments, it is addressed to her son, Victor. She said to give it to you, and that you would know when he is ready to read it." It has been two days since Edward informed Jonathan of the news of Mina's death. Jonathan sits by her coffin, keeping a lonely vigil.
"Jonathan..." Edward said quietly. "It cannot wait any longer. The service is over, it time for her to be buried, to be at peace. Come man, you haven't eaten or slept for almost 2 days!" Jonathan looked at his friend Edward with abject sorrow written on his tired face. "I despise her for what she has done to this family, Edward...and yet I cannot bear the thought she is dead, and has to go into the cold ground...she...she always hated the dark.." Jonathan's voice broke.
"Come my dear friend.." Edward said gently. "Go to bed and I will take care of what has to be done." Jonathan left the room without argument.
Jonathan, a few weeks later; went out for a walk on the estate to try and clear his mind. He stopped at Mina's grave. He begins to sob uncontrollably.
"Oh Mina...Mina...you broke my heart! I will never love again! You have destroyed me forever..." The tears poured through his fingers and splashed onto the ground. Jonathan was inconsolable. Back at the Harker Estate, life goes on without Mina. At Edward's insistence, Jonathan has hired a local village girl as a live-in governess, Jane McMaster. She is a constant steady presence in the 2 motherless boys lives. Jane has especially taken to Victor, who for some unexplainable reason (at least to her), is neglected terribly by his father. A few years have passed now since Mina's death. Victor is 7 and Harrison is 5. The two brothers are as close as two brothers can be. They spent every waking hour with each other. That afternoon Jane came outside to find Victor. She smiled inwardly at the scene of the two inseperable brothers playing together.
"Victor my dear," Jane said gently. "Come, your papa wishes to speak with you right away."
Victor happily followed Jane into the hall where Jonathan was waiting. "Papa wants to see me!" he thought to himself expectantly. Jonathan immediately tore into Victor with a vengance, as he usually did. "Now listen to me, boy" Jonathan said angerily. "You are going to Rookwood Academy as soon as possible! I can no longer tolerate your presence in this house!"
Victor began to cry. "Why doesn't papa love me?" he thought sadly to himself. "What did I do?"
Jane looked on, her heart swelling with pity and love for Victor. Jonathan stormed out of the hall and left a shattered Victor. Jane ran to Victor and hugged him close. "Oh my dear, do not despair...I will go speak with your papa, perhaps I can change his mind."
Victor; starved for attention and affection, hugged Jane with all his might. Jane followed Jonathan down the hall into the powder room. "Excuse me, Mr. Jonathan, sir, I must protest! Victor is barely 7 years old, he is too young to be sent away to school! I can continue to tutor him here with his brother. It is no bother at all..."
"I hardly see where this is any of your business," Jonathan said coldly. "I have the final say of what becomes of Victor, not some governess in my employ!" "Victor needs love and attention," Jane said desparately. "He needs a mother's love, and a father's love as well!"
"You want to be mother to that creature, be my guest!" Jonathan snapped angerily. "I want no further dealings with him! Say the word, and I'll marry you so you can boss us about legally and stick your nose in all you want! It is no matter to me!!" Jane's anger boiled over, and she lost her composure. "I have never met such a cold, unfeeling man! Marry you? I would have to take total leave of my senses! You sir, are not a gentleman!"
Jonathan laughed savagely. "Do not flatter yourself my dear, that I offered a proposal of marriage out of affection. It would be convenience only...a mother to the boys, the occasional pleasure for me!" Jane reached out to slap Jonathan, but he grabbed her arms and kissed her roughly. She fought him as much as she could. All of the sudden she felt disgust and anger. Jane pulled herself away." How dare you!" she snapped.
Jonathan smiled cruelly. "You want to keep Victor out of boarding school? Then become my wife, mistress of this estate. I am weary of running this place...I need a helpmate. Think it over...it is a marriage of convenience...for us both."
Jonathan left the room, and left a stunned Jane to ponder all that passed between them.
Meanwhile upstairs Victor sleeps fitfully in his bed, unaware of the turmoil happening downstairs on his behalf. Victor is having a recurring dream, of a pale intense looking man who whispers to him in the night. Victor does not understand what is being said, but tonight, he will. "Listen to me, my son... Know I am with you always. For I am Dracula, and you are my flesh and blood. Not even death will separate us, the bond is too strong. You will understand as you grow older...and we will be together again, on the love I hold for you and your mother, I make this solemn oath..."
Victor groaned, but continued sleeping. "Sleep, my son...sleep and be at peace. Know I will watch over you and know I love you utterly...We will be reunited, I promise..."
Dracula took one last look at his beloved son, then vanished from Victor's subconscious mind. Victor woke with a start. His eyes were wet and he was out of breath. The dream seemed so vivid, like the man was standing over him, breathing a cold, icy breath on his face. His young mind could not comprehend what it all meant..but his mind certainly stored the incident away in a safe place, for a later time. The next day, A thoroughly confused Jane went to see Dr. Van Helsing. She figured he was Jonathan's close friend, he would have some sage advice. Jane told Edward the extent of the conversation.
"So you see Dr. Van Helsing, I feel torn. I cannot allow Victor to be sent to that horrid boarding school. I have heard terrible stories. But I do not want to be tied to such a hard, cruel man..." "My dear, call me Edward. I do not know what to tell you. Jonathan was not always this way. Perhaps you can be a steadying force to him and he will snap out of this bitter hard shell he has surrounded himself with."
Jane pondered Edward's words. Suddenly Jane began to cry softly. "I love Victor like he was my own son. I can't explain it. I cannot allow him to be banished! I would do anything to spare him any unhappiness. Even to marry myself to a man I do not love..."
Edward was filled with pity for poor Jane. He immediately gave Jane a reasurring hug. "There, there my dear. Please do not despair. It is a hard decision. All I will say is you must follow your heart. Now dry those tears."
Jane sobbed softly onto his strong shoulder. They parted from the friendly embrace, but remained standing for some time, their arms still about each other. Jane smiled warmly. Edward began to feel uncomfortable. His face began to flush. "What in God's name is happening..?" he thought to himself. He parted from Jane then gallantly kissed her hand. The skin felt cool to his lips. Jane, all of the sudden; felt her heart beating faster. She smiled. The room seemed to get very warm all at once.
"Goodbye, Jane..." he said quietly. "Good night, Edward.." After Jane left, Edward sat very still in his parlour. His heart began to ache. There was no denying he had feelings for Jane. He was too much of a gentleman to encroach on Edward's personal space and interfere with Jane in any way. After all these years of confirmed bachelorhood, to have feelings for a woman at this stage, and one that is involved with Jonathan! The sorrow was overwhelming. Jane grugingly married Jonathan, and within the year gave birth to a daughter, Carolina. The two settled into a sort of mutual friendship. Carolina's birth softened Jonathan's heart somewhat toward Jane, he was at least polite to her. They regarded each other as brother and sister, and lived as such. A sense of calm has settled into the Harker home...but for how long? The weeks grew into months, the months clustered into years, until Victor has now reached his 17th birthday. His looks are as dark and his eyes as intense as his father's.
The fact that he looks so much like Dracula has not softened Jonathan's intense hatred of Victor. Jonathan still refuses to discuss with Jane why he despises the boy so. Carolina has grown as well and is now 11 years old. She follows Victor about constantly, always hugging him tight. "Victor, say you'll marry me when I grow up...promise me you will!"
Victor laughed. "My dear beautiful sister, you will find someone much more worthy to marry than I!"
Carolina hugged Victor all the tighter. "No, I will love only you...and no one else..." Victor was touched by his sister's devotion. He smiled at her warmly. "Younger sisters often look up to and worship their older brothers," Victor said. "But Carolina, my sweet, you will outgrow it, and look back fondly at your feelings."
Carolina looked at Victor and did not answer. "No Victor..." she thought inwardly with a maturity far beyond her years. "I will not outgrow it, and one day you will feel the same." Sometime later, the family and Edward gather to celebrate Harrison's 16th birthday. Everyone is chatting amiably until Jonathan came into the room.
"You!" Jonathan thundered to Victor. "Get out this instant...you are not welcome at this party! I am talking to you, spawn!" Victor turned toward Jonathan. His rage boiling over, he crouched and hissed at Jonathan in a very vampiric like pose.
"I am sick of your verbal abuse, Father...I will tolerate it no more. If you value your life, you will not speak to me like that again."
Edward watched the exchange with great concern. The room grew very quiet. The family looked on in shock. Jonathan grabbed a nearby drink and threw it in Victor's face.
"Miserable creature!" Jonathan cried. "You dare to threaten me in my own home? In front of my family? Evil son of the devil!" Victor grabbed Jonathan and they began to fight viciously. All the years of hate and verbal abuse bubbled over on both sides. Harrison ran into the fray and threw his arms in the air. "Father! Victor! please stop this instant!"
They both ignored Harrison. On the other side of the room, Jane screamed. The room erupted into total pandemonium. Carolina began screaming at the top of her lungs. Edward tried to step in. "For the love of God Jonathan, let the boy go!" Edward cried.
Jonathan eyes were glazed over in anger. He heard no one. All he knew is he had the son of Dracula by the neck, and he was going to snap it and end this nightmare. Within an instant, Victor with a strength beyond his age and size, immediately turned the tables on Jonathan. Victor's face was purple with rage. He began to squeeze and Jonathan began gasping for every breath. Everyone was screaming, Victor heard nothing but his own blood raging through his veins.
He heard nothing until Carolina cried, "No Victor! Let him go...please! For me!! I beg you!"
Victor let go. Jonathan recovered himself. The room was suddenly eerily quiet. "You are to leave this house and never return. You are no son of mine, the very sight of you revolts me. You are to have no contact with anyone in this house...I never want to see your evil face again." Jonathan looked at Victor with an immense hatred. "Leave now, or I will not be responsible for the consequences."
Carolina looked on in horror..."No papa...no..." she cried. Harrison looked on the terrible scene with inexplicable sadness. The calm happy facade of the Harker home was smashed into bits...if it ever existed at all. He knew things would never be the same. Fear and dread also washed over him. He suddenly was afraid for everyone in the room.... Edward came over to Victor. "You can come stay with me, ...I think it is for the best."
"Thank you Uncle Edward. I really appreciate your kindness." Victor said quietly.
Jonathan turned away. "Just get out, both of you." he said menancingly. Jane began to cry with a depth of misery she had never felt before in her life. She had feared this moment for the last 10 years.
"Stop that annoying wailing, woman!" Jonathan boomed. "I'll not have you caturwalling over this!"
Any respect or friendship Jane ever felt toward Jonathan was now broken beyond all repair. Edward took a visibly shaken Victor back to his nearby home. He led him into his study. "Sit down, Victor, I will light a fire, and we will have a talk. I believe you have a lot of questions..."
Victor sat in a nearby chair.."I do Uncle Edward..." "Jonathan Harker is not my father, is he?" Victor asked quietly. "He has certainly hinted enough over the years, it also explains his complete hatred for me..."
Edward said wearily, "No, he is not. Your mother Mina, was with child when she married Jonathan. Jonathan believed you were his, until your father returned a few years later..." Victor sat very still. The only noise was the wood crackling in the fireplace.
"Many years ago, I was troubled by dreams. A man would stand over my bed...he only spoke to me once, he said I was his flesh and blood, he said his name was Dracula...is this my father? What happened to him? Where is he now?" Victor asked urgently. Edward closed his eyes and sighed deeply. "Victor, what I am about to tell you may sound fantastical, but it is true. Your father was a Count Dracula, a creature of the undead. You are the rare offspring of a human and a vampire...I did not think it was possible. You are a Dhampyre. Today's events proved it to me.....the way you turned on Jonathan, the abnormal strength..." Edward's voice trailed off. Edward Continued, "Dracula is extremely powerful. Jonathan and I destroyed him once, but thanks to your mother's interference..he returned.. I will not go into the particulars here, Let's just say we buried him in the woods on the estate. The fact that he spoke to you in your dreams shows he is still dangerous, even in death..." Victor's head was reeling. Yet, somehow he knew it to be true. He always felt different from everyone else. For as long as he could remember. The reduced amount of sleep, the little amount of food he needed to subsist on, his wild mood swings, his abhorence to bright sunlight and as Edward said; today's outburst of violence and abnormal strength. Now a vampire for a father.
"So..." Victor said brutally. "I am cursed." "I am sorry Victor. So little is known about Dhampyres, there are so few. In all my studies of the occult and superstitions, I have only found out a very few facts. I will tell you what I know...you will have an extremely long life, a few hundred years or more. As for the vampire's lust for blood, it will be something you will have to fight for the rest of your days." Edward said quietly. "I can't believe what I am hearing!!" Victor cried. "This is beyond all logic! I have read about vampires, but to have one as my father? No wonder Harker called me a spawn, a son of evil...It would have been better if I had never been born!!" He finished passionately. "Don't say that Victor! It is futile at this stage to wish one had never been born...we must deal with the here and now. We will send for your things, you will move in here permanently. Next semester you will return to school and finish your education..." Edward's voice trailed off wearily. "It has been a long day, I must get some sleep.."
Yes," Victor said flatly. "Go Uncle, rest. I'd like to be alone." Edward left the study to go upstairs to his room, leaving Victor to contemplate all that was said. Victor felt his emotions rising, he stood and clenched his fists, his face turning red with rage. His eyes burned with hatred. Deep in his chest, he fought the urge to scream. He cursed Dracula, Mina and Jonathan, he cursed himself, life and the fates. The anguished cry could not be held back any longer. Victor's misery and pain flooded forth, and the scream that issued deep from Victor's chest did not sound human. Outside; off in the distance, wolves howled in reply. Victor's fate was sealed. Out into the woods of the Harker Estate, the wolves howl. Deep under ground, Dracula lay in his coffin. Has he really been destroyed as Harker and Van Helsing believe? Or is the power of the Count too great for any living being? Inside the coffin, at the sound of Victor's anguished cry, Dracula's eyes fly open. He cannot move or speak, but after more than 15 years of this undead slumber, the count has been awakened, and the Curse of Dracula has been unleashed.....

Ominous stuff.
Possibly the most unsympathetic Harker in the whole annals of gothic lit, and he's up against some stiff competition... I love your take on the tale. It remains spiritully true to the original book, with the vampire as a catalyst / symbol for all the abuses, neuroses, and psychoses of so-called civilised society, and it doesn't hurt that your vampire, whatever his vices, is in many ways better than the normals (as is his son)... As a would-be author of sympathetic vampire stories, I have no moral objections.
I seem to be detecting small echoes of "Wuthering Heights" as well: Victor is reminding me vaguely of Heathcliff as a kid, and Carolina of Cathy, although that might just be because my sister did the Sims version of "Wuthering Heights"...
