~~PART I~~
Continuation of the Van Helsing Chronicles...This is Part I...When we last left our tale, Edward Van Helsing Jr. had just been transformed into a vampire by Count Dracula....
Mina and Jane immediately ran for Edward's bedroom door when they heard his agonized cries from down the hall. They tried to gain entrance, but the door was locked, or jammed. Jane began to pound frantically on the door. 'Edward, Edward! What is it? Let us in!"

"Go away mother.." Edward croaked. "Take Mina with you..I'll...I'll come out soon!" Mina and Jane looked at each other in confusion, but left as Edward asked.
The room was unbearably hot. In a fit of extreme rage, Edward tore off his soaked with sweat pajama top and whirled to face the Count.

"YOU! You did this to me! You are Dracula, aren't you!? I read my father's journals! Speak! Explain what you have done!" Edward hissed angerily.
"I merely completed what was already started...you were sick and dying. It would have been a most horrific death. I saved you from that fate!" Dracula thundered violently.

Edward could not believe his ears. "Saved me? You have cursed me...for all eternity!"
"Listen to me boy...It was either this or death. Eternal and everlasting death. I chose to give you eternal LIFE! In all these centuries, you are only the second person I have given the 'gift' to, you should be grateful! Miserable wretch!" Dracula roared fiercely. Edward waved his arm in indignation. "Gift..." he scoffed. "You speak nonsense. How did I come to be so sick? Explain that!"

Dracula was silent for a moment. He then told Edward of Sabrina's role in his transformation.
"Sabrina!? You blame this on a foolish, stupid girl?" Edward spat belligerently.

"She is Dracula's grand-daughter...there is no more to be said." The count said contemptously. "Now listen to me closely Edward Van Helsing, you will not take your revenge on her or anyone. Heed my warning!"
"I should destroy you right here and now...save the family the agony of your return.." Edward replied menancingly.

Dracula scoffed dissmissively. "Let me tell YOU here and now...you cannot destroy me. Not only am I more powerful than you, you cannot destroy the one who made you, or you will be destroyed yourself."
Edward turned away in frustration.

"Accept what you have become Edward, you have no choice. One tortured soul in the family is enough..Victor will tell you that! Embrace your destiny, your fate! You are now a vampire!" Dracula said firmly.
Edward fumed inwardly, the count's words ringing in his ears.
Victor..he had to speak to his Uncle Victor at once. He would know what to do.

"I want to talk to Victor." Edward said flatly.

Edward, without realizing what was happening, turned into a bat.
Dracula smiled with great satisfaction. "See? The urge to survive will rule all your thoughts and your instincts...You will find the power exilerating. Come..we shall go to Victor at once." The Count said in a calmer tone.

Dracula also changed into a bat. Through an open window they both flew into the dark night sky, toward Carfax Abbey.
Victor was reading in his study. As a dhampyre, he needed very little sleep to function, and often read late into the night while the rest of the house was abed.

Out of thin air, two large menancing bats appeared in the room...Victor shook his head in disbelief.
Dracula apparated before Victor. "My Son...it is good to see you after all these years." The Count's deep voice uttered softly.

Victor's mouth hung open in absolute shock. "Father!? Here??"
Edward also appeared, but Victor hardly noticed him...he was still staring at his father. Such a flood of mixed emotions washed over Victor. Apprehension filled his soul.
However, Victor could not help but smile slightly. He did love his father, regardless of what evil he may of represented on earth.
Victor turned his attention toward Edward. He at last noticed the translucent pale skin and unmistakable vampiric features. "My God! Edward! What has happened to you!" Victor sputtered.

Edward hissed, "Ask your precious father, he has cursed me for all eternity!" In a voice laced with fury, Edward told Victor what had happened.
"Father! Is this true? You have ruined Edward's life! Still looking for revenge for what happened so long ago! Jonathan Harker and Edward Van Helsing are dead, so you will take your revenge on their children?" Victor cried in disbelief. Dracula faced his son, whom he loved more dearly than he cared to admit. He began to explain about Sabrina, and the fact he had only two choices with regard to Edward.

"Believe me my son, I did not do it out of any misplaced revenge. The hatred in my heart is buried with Harker and Van Helsing. It will not return, I promise you."
Victor listened sadly to the tale. He knew it, Peter's daughter was going to be a problem. Look at what she has already accomplished at such a tender age.
He supposed his father was right, he did not have much of a choice. Was eternal life any better than eternal death? It was a point he was sure Edward would argue passionately.
Victor was sorely conflicted. Should he believe his father?
Dracula closed his eyes and sighed deeply. "I am so weary of all this hate and revenge. Your beloved mother is gone, there is no bringing her back. You are all that is left of her and I. You, Sabrina and...your son. Can we not try to be some sort of family..can we not embrace each other with love and respect?" Victor stood and stared intensely at his father. The words he spoke were deeply felt no doubt, but can he be trusted? They had been in this situation before a couple of decades ago. But then all his father wanted was revenge. Now he speaks of peace and family. Victor desparately wanted to believe him, but was nonetheless wary. Victor turned to Edward. "I am truly sorry for what has happened to you...I cannot begin to express my sorrow. But we must accept what has happened and move on, Edward. I wish for you to stay here at Carfax Abbey. I will go at once to your Mother and tell her you will be recuperating here with me, we will say nothing of what has happened, at least for now." "Also I will see that wretched child Sabrina and ensure her silence. ... together we will face this 'curse'. It is something I live and deal with everyday. It is a dark part of my life, but there is light. Carolina and Vic are that light."

Edward thought of Mina for the first time since this happened. Yes, Mina could be that light...but what kind of life would that be for her? His head began to spin.

All the upset and emotion became too much for Edward. "Destroy me now Uncle Victor! I cannot live like this! I cannot subject my loved ones to this miserable being I have become!"

"Do not ask me to do such a thing, I will not." Victor whispered. "You do not want to die, deep down in your soul, you know this to be true. Believe me, I have been where you are now..."
"Come Edward, I will find you a change of clothes. I will prepare a room for you, then I must be off to your mother's. Promise me you will not do anything foolish while I am gone." Victor said firmly.

Edward sighed. "As you say Uncle Victor..."
Victor turned to the Count. "Father, you will stay as well. You both must stay hidden until I explain things to Carolina and Vic. Is that understood?"

"Of course my son," Dracula said smoothly. "I am not here to cause you any trouble or further pain, you have my word."
Victor rushed to Jane Van Helsing, it was late when he arrived, so he stayed overnight. He explained Edward was convalescing at Carfax Abbey. Jane questioned him on how Edward found the strength and will to make it to Carfax..why was the door locked...
Victor lied convincingly, Jane raised one eyebrow but accepted Victor's explanations. He despised lying to the woman he thought of as his mother, but he had no choice.
Later that morning, after a quick visit to the Harker's to ensure Sabrina's silence and bring Harrison up to speed; Victor was at last back at Carfax Abbey.
He sought out Carolina and told her everything that had occured the previous night. He did not leave out one detail.
Carolina recoiled in horror. Dracula, here!? Her heart ached for what had happened to Edward, her half-brother. "What about Vic? What do we tell him?" she cried.

"We tell him the truth, as we have always done. He should meet his grandfather...father has pledged peace, Carolina. I believe him."
Victor hugged Carolina close. 'Do not despair my love, nothing will happen to you or Vic or anyone else in the family. On this I swear."

Carolina clung to Victor tightly. She longed to believe him, but to have such evil under one's roof, how could they stay safe?
Dusk has settled over Carfax Abbey. Edward is awake from his daily slumber, he seeks out his Uncle Victor.
Victor again tries to console the young man.

"How will I fight this, Uncle? This never-ending insatiable need?"

Victor sighed. "I know it must be much worse for you...but I have noticed the older I get, the more intense the need gets...I am very distressed."
Victor smiled weakly. "Do not despair Edward, we shall fight this! The two of us should be able to overcome such a pressing need. We will put our heads together and come up with something!"

Edward smiled slightly. It gratified him to know Victor would be nearby for support.
As Edward leaves the study, his firey red eyes are burning intensely. Already he hungers...fighting this urge will be more difficult than he can imagine.

He had to admit to himself that Dracula was indeed correct, it was exilerating...
Vic was alone in his room...sleep would not come. His head was still spinning with the revelations of the Count being in their midst. Meeting the man face to face was such a shock.
He could not shake the feelings that came over him whenever the Count or his Uncle Edward were nearby, but especially his grandfather.
It must be like a sixth sense, he reasoned. I can tell whenever vampires are near...like an alarm in my head.

Vic did not know why he posessed such a skill...perhaps it would prove helpful in the years to come.

However his grandfather intriged him, he must find out more about this vampire...
Early the next evening, Vic sought out the Count and found him as always, reading in the study. He approached him with some trepidation.

"Grandfather...I...was wondering if you would tell me how you came to be a vampire, if you do not mind..." Vic's voice trailed off.

Dracula stared at his grandson for sometime, deep in thought.
"Why not! You should know more about the family, your heritage." Dracula proclaimed firmly.
I would be most honoured to share the tale with you, dear boy. Come, let us sit down and light a fire, for this shall take sometime.."
*Dracula Narrating*

It was about 1220, I was a Teutonic Knight in the service of King Andrew of Hungary. We were deep in the Carpathian mountains in the soveriegn state of Transylvania, helping the Hungarians fend off the Cumans. My name back then was Garrard Jorg Vogler.
I fell in love with the area, Transylvania was beautiful...majestic mountains, lush vineyards, and flowers of such frailty and beauty as to be found nowhere else.

The Count of the castle and estates I was in charge of guarding had a radiant daughter, Brigitta,
She was indeed lovely, a sweet and gentle girl.
Her father, Count Lazar Karpati took a liking to me, and asked if I would marry his daughter and become heir to all his estates, as he had no son of his own. Since the King of Hungary was expelling the knights and I did not wish to return to Germany...I accepted. I became what was called a 'Transylvanian Saxon'
The daughter was willing to wed, so it was agreed.
The old Count belonged to the The Order of the Dracul...the Dragon...an ancient society pledging the forefathers to defend the church against all enemies of Christ. I happily took this pledge and became heir to the Castle Dracula.
As you may surmise, that relationship was not entirely successful.
My dearest friend in all the world, Raynor Von Nachtwald was a brave and courageous knight, and a hospitallier, a forerunner to a Doctor. He was highly regarded, and decended from nobility. We fought many years side by side, when I decided to stay in the Carpathians, so did Raynor. We were married many years, Brigitta and I. We lived contentedly in her father's castle. And when the old gentleman died, I became Count Dracula.
I grew to love Brigitta dearly.
It was a love built on friendship and mutual regard and respect.
One afternoon, Brigitta had some surprising news. When she told me after all these years of marriage that she was at last expecting a child, our joy was complete. Never was I so serenely happy...or at peace. Finally the day arrived, it was a most difficult birth...the hours dragged I could hear my dear wife screaming in agony..
I paced the floor downstairs, my heart in my throat. At last, the blood-curdling cries stopped. I send Raynor up to find what had happened. My dear friend came to give me the most grieveous news possible...
The baby..a son, was born dead, and my poor wife soon followed the stillborn child into heaven and God's grace.
Raynor turned to leave me in my inconsolable grief.

I was alone; alone to wallow in heartache and misery...
I was livid. My anguish and anger had taken over my very soul. I was obsessed with revenge.
I blamed everyone, including my friend and fellow knight Raynor..if only he was in the room! He could perhaps have saved them both! But a man was not allowed to be anywhere near the birth!
But most of all, I blamed God.
Who should disturb my tortured solitude but the Abbot. He soon began to pray aloud in a most obnoxious tone for my poor wife's soul, and that of my son, whom he stated would not go to heaven because he was not baptized. The midwife had botched the baptism so according to Holy Mother Church he was damned.
"It is God's law" he stated piously.
He also informed me my poor wife died suddenly before being able to confess her sins to a priest, so she too would follow my son to the firey pits of eternal damnation.

I grabbed my sword, and in a defensive pose; brandished it at the Abbot...how dare he condemn my wife and son?? This was my reward for defending God's church all these years?
My rage enveloped me with a furious intensity. I let the sword fall to the stone floor. I swore an oath of evil in front of God's servant, that loathsome Abbot.

'I renouce God! I shall rise from my own death to avenge my wife and son with all the powers of darkness! I pledge my everlasting soul to the spirit of evil, I now serve only him!'
The Abbot looked at me and hissed "Sacrilege! Then your soul cannot ever be saved! The body and blood of Christ can never be receieved again! You are now a foe of God!"

I turned away. "The blood is the life and it shall be mine! Begone and never return to this castle! If I live outside the grace of God, then so be it!"
Dracula sighed deeply. It was painful to relive that period of time. Vic sat very still, and unknown to both Dracula and Vic, Victor stood in the doorway, where he heard the entirity of his father's tragic tale. The room was very quiet.

"What became of your friend, Raynor the brave knight?" Vic asked quietly.

Dracula sighed again, somewhat sadly. "That, my dear grandson, is a tale to be told at another time."
Victor coughed and walked into the room. "It is quite late Vic, you have school tomorrow, come say goodnight and be off to bed."
Vic grabbed his father and pulled him into an affectionate embrace. "I love you, Dad..." Vic said, his voice laced with emotion.
"I love you too, son..." Victor hugged the young man tightly.
"Goodnight Grandfather!" Vic called cheerfully.

"Sleep well, dear boy." Dracula said softly, his deep voice thick with emotion.
After Vic left the room, Victor turned to the Count. It was a few minutes before he could speak. "Why did you not tell me this before, father?"
"You never asked me." Dracula whispered.
"You have been walking this earth since the 1200's? My God, what you must have seen!" Victor said, his voice filled with awe.
"Suddenly I feel weary, pray excuse me my son..."
Dracula left the room leaving a stunned Victor.
A few days later, Victor and Edward decided it was time to tell Jane and Jon of Edward's unfortunate transformation, it was not longer feasible to continue with a lie.
Victor went into Edward's bedroom, where he was waiting nervously.
"Your mother and Jon are waiting in the parlour, are you ready Edward?"

Edward insides were churning nervously. "Yes, I suppose..." he said quietly. "Let us get this over with."
So Victor began explaining in great detail to both Jane and Jon what had happed to Edward, his new life-state.
Jon became excited and animated; he peppered them all with probing questions. This was all new to him, he had no inkling of the dark past, of vampires...and to have it in one's own family!
Jane immediately stood and began to sob most piteously.

Jon looked at his Uncle Victor. It explained a lot, why Victor did not seem to age, why he always looked so tortured and sad a lot of the time.
Edward tried desparately to console poor Jane...but her heartbreak was deep and complete.

"Please mother.." Edward said softly.

Jane contained to cry, the tears spilled into her hands and dropping onto the floor at her feet.
Victor stood by helplessly...it ached him to see Jane; the woman who raised him, in such torment.

She was taking the news very badly indeed. Edward continued to whisper words of encouragement and tried to console her the best way he knew how.
Jane began to dry her eyes. 'Thank God Edward is not alive to witness this tragedy..it would have broken his heart,' she thought to herself. Her sobs subsided somewhat.

"There mother, do not weep anymore, we are still together, we are still a family, is that not what counts?" Edward smiled warmly.
Victor immediately went to Jane and hugged her close. "Mother dear, please do not distress yourself, I know this comes as a shock, but we will deal with it as a family, as we have always done.."

Jane sobbed quietly again, her tear stained face buried into Victor's strong shoulders.
Jon rose and faced Edward, the older brother he looked up to, worshipped even. He stared at him for the longest time. Jon did not know what to say.
Edward stared back at his brother apprehensively. 'Would he reject me? Would he turn from the creature I have become?' Edward thought to himself worriedly.

Jon grabbed Edward suddenly and pulled him in an affectionate embrace.

"You are still my brother, and I will love and support you always." Jon said, his voice breaking with emotion.

Edward felt tears cluster in the corner of his eyes. "Thank you Jon," he said gratefully.
Jane and Victor watched the affection and love of the two brothers.
In a fleeting moment, Victor thought of Peter, the brother he knew so briefly. 'If only we were as close as Edward and Jon evidently are...' Victor thought wistfully.

Now came the task of explaining to Mina, the woman he loved, of his transformation.
Mina arrived at dusk as instructed. She was initially shocked at Edward's appearance.
'He is so pale! He must have been really ill...' Mina thought to herself.
Edward did not waste a minute, he told Mina the whole unbelieveable tale, every detail. He explained what he has become...the undead, a being of the night, a creature of darkness...

Mina listened...
The frightfully shocking details of the terrible story soon was very plain on Mina's face.

She backed up a few steps away from Edward. She looked at him like he was diseased, a carrier of the plague...a monster.
This was not the response he was expecting from Mina. She turned from him in revulsion, and began to wail.
Edward felt his anger rising deep in his soul. All at once he felt the blood rushing to his head, his emotions were spinning out of his control.
His fury spilled over, and without knowing what he was doing, he hissed menancingly at Mina.

"Stay away from me, you evil creature!" she screamed in terror. Mina turned and ran from the house...and away from Edward as fast as she could.
Edward was in torment. The woman he loved, with every fiber of his undead existence, has rejected him.
And what of his response to that rejection? He had no control over his reaction and that shook Edward to his very core.
' Perhaps I am an evil creature....' he thought sadly to himself.
Edward let a week pass before he went over to the Harker's to try and talk to Mina again. He had sufficiently calmed down and hoped Mina would be more receptive to his explanation. At dusk, he knocked on the door, Laura Harker answered.
"Edward! It has been so long! Please do come in!" Laura said.

"I have come to speak to Mina...Aunt Laura, will you please tell her I am here?"
"Oh Edward..." Laura said sadly. "Mina left 4 days ago to visit her Uncle Arthur Carberry and his family in Scotland. She will be gone some months." Laura saw the look of disappointment on Edward's face. "I am so sorry my dear, I would have thought she would have let you know."

"No...she did not." Edward said quietly. "I cannot stay, say hello to Uncle Harrison and tell him I will see him soon..."
Edward stood on the front steps of the Harker home, the moonlight reflecting off his heartbroken face. His felt physically ill, mortally wounded in his heart.
'How could she leave like that without a word? I thought we loved each other! Obviously the thought of a life with me is too abhorent for her!' Edward felt numb. He slowly began to walk away.

Laura watched the dejected young man and she felt a wave of pity wash over her for Edward's broken heart.
It is a few weeks later, in Scotland Mina is having a quiet visit with her Uncle Arthur, his wife Helen and their teenaged children, James and Sophronia.
Early that evening, Mina went into the parlour to join her family.

"There you are my dear! I have a bit of a surprise for you tonight, we have company!" Arthur cried cheerfully.
"Mina my dear, may I present our neighbour, Lord Raynor Nightwood! Raynor, this is my niece, my sister Laura's daughter, Mina Harker! She is visiting us all the way from London!"

Mina could not look away from the penetrating gaze of the handsome man standing before her. She murmured a perfunctory greeting.
As Raynor Nightwood (a Lord, no less!) began to talk; a small, satisfied smile began to creep onto Mina's face. She had been miserable ever since she arrived here, trying to forget Edward and what he had become. This was the first time something or someone captured her interest. He began to take animatedly of his estates nearby. He was bright, clever, humorous and altogether charming. It didn't hurt that he was very handsome and powerfully built.
Mina could hardly hear a word he was saying, she was busy gazing at him still...
She felt as if she were glued to the spot on the hardwood floor, she felt herself begin to blush from head to toe...what was the matter with her?

Suddenly her Uncle interrupted her trance. "Come! Let us go in to dinner!"
As soon as everyone turned to leave the front parlour, Raynor Nightwood watched hungerily as Mina walked away from him.
His face began to twist into a horrific gaze of an unbridled and raveonous appetite. He hissed softly, his eyes burned red, his sharp teeth shone brilliantly.

He began to chuckle evilly....

LOL!! Excellent!!! My goodness, so Raynor is still alive and well. Mina doesn't know what she's in for. Heck we don't know what we're in for. I just love all the love and emotions between Dracula and his family, and the part with Edward and his mother and brother. I'm glad you brought in Dracula's past. The whole deal with Dracula renouncing God and going to the powers of darkness was done in a tasteful way. Thank you so much for that. Great picture taking, I can't wait for more!!\:wub\: 5pts!

Wow...I love it! I'm still not sure whether to trust Dracula - I believe he's a good man, but his desire for revenge just seems to take over. And I luurve Victor. Poor Edward! And man oh man, what is Mina in for?!

Really VERY good indeed. Poor Edward, that Mina is going to get her just desserts. And poor Dracula (never thought I'd put those two words together), you can see why he ended up so twisted. Really enjoyed it, brilliantly done \:\)

Hi... \:cool\: Im really sorry it took me so long to post a comment to your amazing, amazing story... \:wub\: actually, I read the chapter as soon as you told me it was publihsed, but Ive been just *so* busy... anyway, that's not the right place to apologize. \:ph34r\:
    the story was...awesome!!! really!
it's hard to believe that The Count is really seeking for love and family affection so suddenly - after years of range and revenge but... it's nice to see him in this family-love side! \:P \:D
I also loved to read his personal story told to Vic (...I love Vic!!! \:wub\: but Ive already told you this, haven't I?! \:D) also because it explains a lot... not everything, though: Im more willing than ever to know the *second* part of the story, about the 'evil' Raynor... expecially because he's a vampire, and he has set his vampiric (...is that correct!? or have I just invented a new word?! \;\)) on the sweet and innocent Mina...
actually, I dont like Mina at all!!! \:D I understand why she has rejected the poor Edward... that is: I can understand her reasons, but I completely disagree!!! it's not Edward's fault... it's rather Sabrina's fault! right: what about Sabrina? where has she gone? \:confused\:
[...well, I think that with this lenght of chapter for a comment, I just made up for the delay, didn't I?! \:D]
have a nice day, I cant wait to read the next chapter to enjoy again your great maestry in creating stories and characters...
(btw: Raynor... he seems very evil but - man! - he's sooo hot!!! :P)

Karen! Wonderful! Bravo! This is fantastic. Somehow I knew Lord Raynor would show up in the story after Dracula told Vic about how he had become a vampire! I can't wait for the next part, and, by the way, thanks for letting me known that it was ready!!!!1

I loved every minute of this, although it is completely heartbreaking. Edward is gorgeous! The flashback to Transylvania was beautifully done, and so sad. I'm disappointed in Mina, not exactly the loving reaction I was hoping for! Really really well done, and the shots are fabulous!

The real weepy and like tragic part of the story... \:\( Poor Edward. Inspired storytelling, but I do have one question: if Dracula has only claimed one victim as a vampire prior to this, then how does he come to have two brides? Come to that, what's become of the brides? Did he tire of and dispose of them during a previous segment, or did they tire of his constant absenteeism and slink off to "make" themselves more reliable partners?

I'm sorry it took me so long to read your story. I don't come to TSR that much these days and have been working of a story of my own for another website. I love your scene settings. You have a great eye for detail and always capture the essence of the time period successfully. I espcially enjoyed the flashback, so tragic and well told. And Raynor Nightwood - great name and very handsome. How funny that Mina is so attracted to him after spurning Edward. I can't wait to see the surprise waiting for her!

Yay, finally I got enough time to read all of your stories! I haven't read them before because I wanted to read them after each other to know every detail about the characters \:\) This part is my favourite because it's fantastic to read about something which is related. I mean to read about Hungary and King Andrew II (II. András as we call him) \:D I like your story very much, now I'm going 'cause I'm curious about the next parts as well \;\)
