Hannah Baines wanted nothing more than to be loved, but her cold, cruel husband the Vicar made her life a misery, until she met Daniel Chenoweth....will she ever find happiness?? It is 1889, our story begins in a remote rural corner of Northwestern England. Hannah Baines lives a quiet existence on a small homestead with her elderly father, Josiah. It isn't a easy life, as they try and live off the land as best they can. It is a daily struggle to keep hearth and home, and to keep food on the table...it is a sad fact that they are very close to losing their small farm. The only frequent visitor the Baines recieve is the Vicar Nigel Stanhope, a cold, unyielding man whose constant companion is his bible, which he quotes frequently to anyone who will listen. He claims to be giving Josiah spirital and moral support, when in reality, Nigel has his eye firmly fixed on the lovely Hannah. "Father dear, you are so tired, why don't you go in and have a lie down? I will finish out here.." Hannah said to her father gently.
Josiah sighed and gave his daughter an affectionate kiss. "You are a dear, sweet girl, I do not know what I would do without you." He slowly and wearily went into the cottage. Hannah was so busy tending the small gardens she did not hear footsteps coming up behind her.
A deep masculine voice said, "Excuse me, miss...I wonder if you can help me?"
Hannah whirled around and facing her was a dark, handsome stranger...she had never seen such male beauty before, it nearly took her breath away. "I wonder if you could point me in the direction of the Hanson Cottage? I am staying there as a guest. I went for a walk and I can't seem to find my way back..." the stranger asked kindly.
"I wasn't aware the Hanson's were at the cottage this time of year..." Hannah stated.
"Oh they aren't. They were kind enough to let me use it, my name is Daniel Chenoweth." Hannah introduced herself and gave the young man directions. They soon were chatting very amiably. She learned Daniel was an artist, and came to the cottage to be alone and do some painting.
Both became so engrossed in their converstation, they did not realize how much time has gone by. Nigel arrives on the farm and watches the pleasant exchange from a distant...he is none too pleased. He watches as they say their good-byes, staying out of sight until the young man is gone. "Who was that young man, Hannah? And what were you chatting about?" Nigel demanded coldly.
Hannah turned to face the Vicar. He always sent a chill down her spine, his eyes showed no warmth, no joy, no sympathy for one's fellow man. She often puzzled how he ever became a Vicar, lacking such depth of understanding or kindness. "He was asking directions to the Hanson Cottage, he was lost that is all." Hannah replied coolly.
"It is not very prudent to be conversing with strangers Hannah, I would advise against it in future...come, I have something to discuss with you and your father." Nigel said, no emotion in his voice. Josiah was up from his nap, he watched closely as Hannah began to prepare dinner. The Vicar was in the next room washing his hands.
"Hannah my dear." Josiah whispered quietly. Vicar NIgel has something very important to say to you; please say you will consider carefully what he has to say...your future is at stake."
"Of course father, anything you say." Hannah smiled absently. The Vicar returned to the room and sat down. He cleared his throat and said in a flat icy tone, "I have spoken to your father, I am aware of the dire straits you find yourselves. I have a solution that should suit us all...Hannah I wish for you to become my wife and help mate, as soon as it is possible..." Hannah could not believe what she had just heard. Marry that cold fish? The very thought of it turned her stomach, she felt hot bile rise in her throat. Surely he could not be serious!
"Do not answer now Hannah. Think on it and I shall return tomorrow afternoon for your answer. I bid you both goodnight." The vicar rose and left the cottage. Josiah later found Hannah and hugged her close. "My dear, I am so weary, I am not well. We both know I cannot continue at this rate, we have no money, no prospects. Think on it, you will have a most comfortable life, and social standing as a Vicar's wife you can never have here. It would make my life complete to see you safely wed!" Josiah cried. When Hannah was finally alone, she let the tears fall. She knew she had no choice but to marry that stick of a man, Vicar Stanhope. She had to do it for her dear father, to ensure he was comfortable in his declining years. She did not care a fig for herself, she would happily stay at the farm, but she now saw quite clearly that it was not feasible. After a restless sleep, Hannah awoke the next morning and started about her chores. She found her mind wandering to the encounter with the handsome stranger the day before...why couldn't the Vicar have kind eyes and a soothing voice as Daniel Chenoweth had? The Vicar was already at the Baines Cottage, he played some hymns on Hannah's spinet while he waited for her to come in from the gardens. He could barely contain himself. All he wanted was to own and posess Hannah; her body, her soul. Not one thought of love entered his cold, narrow mind. Hannah at last, came into the cottage. Nigel went over to her. "It is time for your answer my child. I do pray you gave it a lot of thought...I can ease the suffering of you and your father. Tell me now..."
Hannah cleared her throat nervously. "I shall marry you, Vicar." she heard herself say. She felt as if she was about to be physically ill. The next few days were a blur to Hannah, first thing she knew she was standing in the luxurious parlour of the Vicar's, they had been married just an hour before. She looked about the room at it's grandeur; It seemed out of place for a humble country Vicar. It made her even more uncomfortable and nervous than she already was. She also did not like the way he was looking at her, with a hunger almost. Again she felt her stomach wretch. Hannah had no time to react at all. The Vicar grabbed her and kissed her rather roughly, there was no warmth or kindness in his embrace or kiss.
"You are mine..." he said gruffly. "Mine to do with as I please. You are now my wife, and shall obey me in all things." Nigel grabbed Hannah and scooped her up in his arms. She tried to fight, but stopped as soon as he whispered in her ear menacingly, "You will not fight me, for if you do, you shall regret it I promise you. You will submit as a good wife should!"
He headed toward the bedroom. Hannah was sobbing with fear, the thought of his hands touching her filled her with dread....why did she ever agree to this arrangement?? The early morning sun rises on the Vicarage and the small St. Judes Chapel where Vicar Nigel Stanhope and his new bride, Hannah now reside.
Such a happily situated home, but inside Hannah was miserable, and barely married only one day.... Hannah now doubts very much that she made the right decision, she wanted so much to spare her beloved father any further hardship. She sighed deeply and sadly; as she looked at the bed, she shuddered to think of what happened in this very room the night before. Her thoughts are interupted as Nigel came into the bedroom. "I want to inform you that this is my room, my private santuary, and I will not be sharing it with you. Come with me and I will show you where you will be sleeping."
Hannah secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness she will have her own room. Nigel led her to a small cabin on the property, next to the vicarage. It was dismal; the straw mattress and ragged blankets were damp and musty. Hannah could not believe this turn of events!
"This is where you will go after you perform your household duties." Nigel said flatly. "You cannot be serious!" Hannah cried. "Why can't I have a room in the house? And when is my father coming to stay with us?"
Nigel's quick violent temper bubbled over. "Your father will not be staying with us, he will stay on the farm. And you will sleep where I tell you to sleep!" he thundered. "Now, go make my breakfast!" Hannah soon dressed and began making breakfast. All this was for nothing, this sham of a marriage! That evil man would not let her dear father stay with her! He lied! Hannah was furious, but dared not show it, unless she wanted to invoke the wrath of the Vicar. As they began to eat breakfast, Hannah plunged ahead and asked about her father one more time.
"Listen to me, I never said your father would live with us, I said I would make sure he doesn't starve. That is all I am prepared to do. That is all I am going to say on that subject." Nigel snapped. "Also I have dismissed the housekeeper, you will be keeping house as is your wifely duty."
Hannah's misery was now complete. Meanwhile at the Hanson Cottage, Daniel has made great progress in his painting. He is enjoying the quiet and solitude the cottage affords him, but his mind frequently returns to the afternoon he spoke with that glorious looking young woman. 'Perhaps,' he reasoned. 'It is time for another walk down the lane...' Poor Josiah is miserable and alone. He recieves a small pitance from the Vicar, but it is hardly enough to keep him fed. Hannah is an infrequent guest, as she cannot get away from the Vicarage. Josiah now sees the Vicar was being kind to him only to illict his help in securing Hannah for his wife. What has he done to his daughter? What kind of man is she tied to? Daniel went out for his walk that very afternoon, finding the small homestead, he introduced himself to Josiah and inquired after Hannah.
"My dear boy, Hannah was married just a couple of weeks ago to the Vicar Stanhope at St. Judes, she now resides there."
Daniel could not keep the disappointment off his face. Inwardly he was devestated. He knows he only spoke to her once, but he was quite taken with her. Daniel began to walk away, dejected. Josiah watched the young man with some pity. 'Wait!" he called after Daniel.
"Why don't you call on Hannah at the vicarage? I am sure she would enjoy the company. Here; let me give you directions, son."
Daniel smiled slightly. "Perhaps I shall call on her one day, thank you." At last Hannah was able to get away from under the yoke of the Vicar. He was off for his monthly visit to the bishop, and would be gone overnight. Hannah was beside herself with joy at finally being left alone, she hurried over to the homestead to see her dear father.
"Oh father, it is so wonderful to see you! I have been so lonely!" Hannah said with great warmth. "Father, who cut all that wood for you that is stacked outside?" Hannah asked.
"Why it was that kind young man, staying at the cottage...Daniel. He was here last week asking after you, such a nice lad. He has been back to see me a couple of times, doing some chores for me...."
Hannah froze. He was still here! She thought he had left long ago...and he was asking after her...Hannah suddenly felt heartsick. After Hannah prepared her father some lunch, she impulsively decided to go to Hanson Cottage and thank Daniel in person for his kindness to her father. As she walked up the gravelled walk, she felt her heart flutter in anticipation. Silly girl! she admonished herself. You hardly know this man, and you are married, such as the marriage is... She tentatively knocked at the door. Daniel opened it to find Hannah standing there, he immediately broke into a happy smile. He was genuninely glad to see her. After some pleasantries, Hannah thanked him profusely for helping her father.
"It is no hardship, your father is a kind man." Daniel smiled brilliantly. "I am glad to do it, truly." Daniel brought Hannah into the little artist studio on the cottage property. "Here is where I have been working the last few weeks, I would be honoured if you would allow me to show you what I have painted..."
"I would love it.." Hannah smiled warmly. She felt so at ease in Daniel's company, not like with Nigel, where she had to walk on eggshells daily. "These are wonderful! You have a true gift!" Hannah cried. "How I wish I could accomplish such a grand feat!"
"I could give you lessons..." Daniel stated. "It is no bother, I shall be here for a few months yet. I would be most happy to share my enthusiasm for art with another!" Hannah's face showed her sadness and disappointment. 'What is it Hannah? What is the matter?" Daniel asked worriedly.
"My husband does not allow me to leave the house for visiting purposes. I am only out today as he is away overnight...I do not see how it can be done. Nor does he allow visitors to the Vicarage even my own father is forbidden!" A small tear rolled down her cheek. 'What kind of monster was she married to?' Daniel fumed inwardly.
To Hannah, he smiled. "Then we shall not waste a moment longer!" After some quick tips, he gave a canvas and paints to Hannah and encouraged her to paint whatever she wished...they spent the afternoon painting and chatting...Hannah had not had such a glorious day. It was now late afternoon, and Hannah knew she should not stay any longer. She thanked Daniel for the lessons and the memorable day.
"You will come again? Whenever you can get away? Please say that you will Hannah..." Daniel took her small delicate hand in his. It was if a bolt of electricity had passed between them. The room seemed to grow warm suddenly. They stood and looked into each other's eyes for sometime... Impulsively, Daniel began to smother Hannah's hand with warm, passionate kisses. She was quite overcome..but found she could not pull her hand away. She had never felt this way before.
In a small voice she answered.."I will try Daniel, truly I will."
She turned and hurriedly left the cottage.
Daniel watched her go, his heart was pounding furiously in his chest.... Almost 2 weeks had past before Hannah could get away again. Daniel suggested he paint her portrait. Hannah stood and posed for Daniel gladly. She was flattered that he wanted to paint her at all. It was another wonderful afternoon. But the time went by quickly and it was time to go. This time at their parting, Daniel grabbed Hannah and held her close. They stood for the longest time in each other's arms. He did not want to let her go...
"Hannah, when can you visit again?" Daniel murmured gently in her ear. "Please tell me it will be soon, a few days perhaps?"
"I....I cannot say..." Hannah stammered. "I must go.." She reluctantly pulled herself from Daniel's warm embrace and left the cottage. Hannah hurried back to the Vicarage, her emotions were raging and bubbling, threatening to overboil. She went to her pathetic cabin and closed the door. In the privacy of her dank musty room, the tears began to spill over. She could still feel Daniel's arms about her... She knew she was falling in love with Daniel Chenoweth. "If this is what love feels like, than it is miserable!" She moaned aloud. She knew she should not be seeing Daniel alone, in any situation...but something drew her near to him, like a moth to a burning flame. It was her only joy in life to see his face and hear his voice. And yet here she was...married to man with no humanity, no love..if only he showed her the smallest kindness! Hannah dried her tears and composed herself. When she was sure she had calmed down sufficiently she went into the house and into the parlour where Nigel played her spinet.
"Where have you been these last hours?" Nigel said coldly without turning to face her.
"I went for a walk, then I dropped in on Father...it was such a lovely day.." Hannah said quietly. Nigel stopped playing abruptly. He rose and walked toward Hannah, she backed up a few steps to avoid him.
"What have I told you about gallivanting about the county? Your position in this house dictates that you be present, to ensure the house is run smoothly according to my directions...When are you going to get that through your empty head?" Nigel cried angerily. "Yes...I know you are right Nigel, I am sorry." Hannah said in a whisper.
"You have been seen! I have been told you have been around the Hanson Cottage...is this true Hannah?"
Hannah felt her heart turn cold. Blast his parishioners and their meddling ways! Hannah did not know what to say... "Listen to me, for I will only say this once, you are NOT to leave this house again unless I give you permission to do so. Even to visit your father...I will not have a wife of mine become fodder for the old hag busibodies that populate this county...DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME???" Nigel yelled, wagging his long finger in Hannah's frightened face. "Yes Nigel...I understand completely..." Hannah said, completely cowed. She did not know what it was, but Nigel frightened her, the tone of his icy voice was all that was needed for her to back down in any discussion.
Nigel's face softened somewhat. "I am glad we came to this understanding, heed my words, for you shall regret it if you do not. Now, I believe it is time for some supper. Go....let me know when it is ready."
Hannah nodded and left the room dejectedly. One thing Hannah was able to do was to write her father a letter. Even though she did not live that far away, she could not get away to see him, nor could he come and visit. Hannah was a virtual prisoner in her own home. She wrote asking after her father's fragile health and at the very bottom, she asked her father a favour... So that afternoon, Josiah went over to the cottage, Daniel greeted him warmly, he invited Josiah in for a cup of tea. Josiah waved it off. "Hannah wished me to come over and see you, lad. She has a message for you..."
Daniel's face lit up in anticipation. "She says she does not think she can come and see you ever again...it is quite impossible for her." Josiah saw the crestfallen look on Daniel's face. "What is going on here, son? Is there something between you and Hannah? She is married...nothing can come of it!" Josiah said sadly. "I know Josiah...I know full well she is married, but not happily surely! Nothing has happened between us, I haven't even kissed her...but I cannot deny my feelings to you...I have fallen in love with your daughter, quite hopelessly I dare say. Nothing would give me more joy than to whisk her away from her unhappy circumstance..." Daniel sighed heavily. "I must see her one more time, I am leaving England, perhaps for good. I wish to say good-bye, can you get a message to her to meet me?" Josiah turned away. He felt anger and pity for the poor lovestruck young man all at once. But somehow he felt responsible for this collective unhappiness..if only he hadn't urged Hannah to marry the Vicar...."Alright son, I will get a message to Hannah somehow, you have my word...." Josiah did his part, and with great difficulty, Hannah got permission to visit her father. She quickly ran toward the Hanson Cottage, God knows who was watching but she did not care. Hannah was hearbroken when her father told her Daniel was leaving England. She stepped into the art studio and Daniel greeted her happily.
"I can only stay a few moments..." Hannah said quickly. Daniel immediately kissed Hannah, there was no time to lose. It was time to let her know how he felt. Hannah returned the romantic kiss with enthusiasm...There was no denying the obvious feelings they had for each other. "I love you Hannah...come away with me! I have secured a position in Canada...in Halifax, Nova Scotia to be precise...with the Cunard Shipping Lines...we can be together always! Tell me you feel the same for me...tell me!" Daniel urged passionately.
Hannah was flabbergasted. "Nova Scotia! But so far away! Daniel...what about my father? And Nigel...I am married!" "My darling, your father will come with us of course! I am quite fond of him, It will be a new beginning for us all! Think of it! And the Vicar..we will get you a divorce from him as soon as possible. You do love me Hannah....do you not?" Daniel asked worriedly. Hannah ran into Daniel's loving arms. "I do love you Daniel, almost from the first moment, but it is to no avail." Hannah's voice began to quiver.
"No!!" Daniel cried. "I will not accept that! Listen to me..." he whispered urgently. "I will have three passages ready, I leave next Wednesday afternoon, you and your father meet me here at the studio. I will make all the arrangements...it can be done!"
One last embrace and Hannah nodded her assent...she agreed to meet Daniel next week. She quickly looked around and ran down the path back toward her father's home. Hannah burst into the kitchen of the homestead. "Oh Father I have such happy news!" Hannah filled in Josiah of all the details of Daniel's plan for them all. 'Say you will come with us...I cannot leave without you father, please, it is a chance at happiness for us all! I do love Daniel so!" she pleaded. Josiah thought for a minute..who was he to deny his daughter a chance at happiness? Perhaps it would all work out in the end. He took a sip of water then said to Hannah, "As you wish my dear. We shall meet Daniel at the appointed time and place next week."
Hannah's face broke into a broad smile. She had not been this happy in months. Finally Wednesday afternoon arrived, Hannah was so excited she did not sleep the night before. She cleverly packed a small bag and hid it in the woods on the way to her father's house a few days previous. While Nigel was busy in his study writing his sermon for the coming Sunday, Hannah slipped out and ran all the way to her father's. Out of breath, she burst into the front door.
"Father! Let us leave immediately! Where is your suitcase?" Hannah cried happily. "Are you absolutely sure you want to do this, my dear? Daniel is a decent young man but how well do you know him? This is quite a step, one I will happily take with you if you are sure..." Josiah asked quietly, his voice laced with concern.
"I have never been so sure of anything in my life!" Hannah stated emphatically. "Quick, let us go now, father!" Just as Josiah reached for his bag, a thunderous, loud and angry voice boomed menacingly from outside the door. "HANNAH!!!"
'It is Nigel! He must have followed me here!' She cried. 'Father, what shall we do?' Hannah was genuinely frightened. Nigel kicked the door open and faced Hannah and her father. "Do you actually think I would let you leave??" he screeched murderously. "You shall never leave me, not as long as I breathe! And not for some pathetic young whelp!" Nigel took a few steps toward Hannah.
Hannah began to cry, and scream.... Daniel looked worriedly down the lane; not a sign of Hannah or her father! What on earth could be keeping them?
The carriage driver came up behind Daniel, clearing his throat. "The bags are loaded sir, if you are to make the ship in Liverpool, we must leave now, we cannot tarry any longer." Daniel turned and sighed dejectedly. The man was correct, there was no time to lose. There was not even time to go to Josiah's farmstead as it was out of the way of his journey.
"I will be one moment!" Daniel ran into the cottage, he emerged minutes later and climbed aboard the carriage. With a quick snap of the reigns, the carriage driver was off down the lane toward the port city of Liverpool. Daniel sat in the carriage and closed his eyes sadly. His heart was all but smashed into bits. Not even a note from Hannah! There was no denying his hurt and utter disappointment. All the excitement at starting a new life was now ground into dust....Hannah had broken his heart, he felt he would never love again...

I did enjoy your story a lot, it reminded me of the Zebra romance novels which always have the hero and heroine having to overcome some horrible alternative suitor. They don't usually marry them though!

Too bad you had to keep it PG-13; I just know it would have been even better if you'd had some more artistic freedom here.
Anyway, top marks from me. I hope you'll join us - you know where to find us

Thanks for the GB posting and letting me know that you had a new story up! Hehe, I read quite a few "bodice rippers" in Junior High as it was the closest I'd get to a date.
This one is well-written, just like your previous one, and I found myself racing right along with it at the end! Stupid Daniel, I knew Nigel would prevent them from meeting him, why didn't he allow time to stop by the farmstead? Beautiful, sweet, and dumb. What's that cc bun you used on Hannah? It's just what I was looking for recently and annoyed that Maxis hadn't included with Seasons for all our farm wives!

Oh that was very good. I am off to read the next chapter. That Vicar is one nasty dude and I think Daniel should have known better that Hannah would not have stood him up on purpose.

Girl, I'm blown away! And I really hope Daniel has a gun to blow away Nigel with! He reminds me of my first husband, LOL! Everything about this story is gorgeous! And you, my dear, are a 2-genre writer, as am I. You are equally talented with horror and romance- congratulations! I'm growing frightened of uploading my story! You're a tough act to follow. I'm going to read the conclusion now! I hope the vicar dies horribly!

I would fall in love as well, if I were Hannah!

Im sure it will be just great!!!
the screenshots were great, definately, and I love every and each moment of the story...
I cant wait to read more, Im so curious... I hope there will be an happy ending, eventually - Im pretty sure there will!
At first,I didnt like Daniel... he's not my type - but I have to say that he *is* undoubtably charming...

Wow, what a great first chapter! I almost forgot how good it was to read your stories. Nigel is absolutely horrible, and worse, he is supposed to represent good. I do know you will give us a happy ending, but this cliffhanger was just too much! Top marks from me

Very nicely done. You stay in the time period well with good attention to language and behavior. Your characters are interesting, well named, and as usual, you have a knack for creating a lovely and unique looking female lead. Nice screenshots, too, and I especially like the capture of Hannah's face when the Vicar stormed in.
I, too, would enjoy being on your list to notify when part 2 comes out - or any other story for that matter. Did someone mention Van Helsing?
