When we last left our tale, the wagon train had just left Fort Kearney and was heading deep into Colorado Territory. They were being tracked by two Indian brothers, and the train was heading into rougher terrain.

Katie O'Toole won the vote to stay on the wagon train, much to Nathan's chagrin, for he is starting to develop feelings for the spirited young woman...
Flying Eagle was a proud man, he found it hard to adjust to the influx of white people into his territory, into his home. His tribe was now scattered to the four winds also thanks to the soldiers, and he and his younger brother had to scrape for every bit of food to survive. They had to keep moving. The last several months had been difficult ones.
He noticed the wagon train a couple of days ago outside of Fort Kearney, and decided to follow. He did not know what he wanted yet with the wagon train, if anything.
Great Bear followed his older brother dutifully, but he was apprehensive about this whole episode. They were outnumbered by the men on the train, and they had only one weapon between the two of them.
He prayed Flying Eagle was only following so they could slip into camp and take some much-needed food. He prayed his brother, who had a bitter heart, was not planning anything more nefarious...
Katie has been trying not to notice the cold, standoffish way Nathan has been treating her since they left Fort Kearney days ago...he has barely glanced at her.

For her part, she found it hard to tear her eyes away from him. She decided since they were alone at the campfire for the moment, she would broach the subject.
"Are you angry with me, Mr. McIntyre?" Katie asked softly.
Nathan put down his piece of watermelon, "No..." He said emphatically.
"Then why..." Katie began to stutter.
"I think you know the answer to that, Katie." The look in his eyes took Katie back to the night her father was ill, the night he kissed her. A swift stab of emotion plunged through her middle.
"Because...because of what happened outside my Da's tent?" she stammered.
Nathan looked a little annoyed, but Katie did not think it was directed at her. "Yes, because of what happened," he said brusquely. "And because of the possible consequences should it ever happen again."
Katie looked at Nathan sheepishly. "It won't happen again..." she said in a small voice. "And I am not upset anymore. It was just a kiss."
Nathan looked at Katie intensely. "So...you were upset at the time. I see. How naive you are Miss O'Toole to think that was 'just a kiss', it was more than that, and you know it." he snapped.
Katie felt her Irish temper flaring; she fought it back as best she could.
"I am attracted to you Katie...I remember that kiss. Just looking at you now makes me want to do it all over again, so it is easier not to look at you." Nathan said quietly.
Katie turned away from him; nervous flutters invaded her insides. His confession took her aback, and she was speechless.
They continued to eat, neither one speaking, nor did they dare look at each other.
After supper, Lucas Tanner laid out his bedroll near the campfire. The wagons were in a protective circle, and people set up their tents close to one another for protection against any predator, human or animal.

Lucas thought of Dorothy...he had to admit, he was in love with her, how it ever happened, he could not hazard to guess. How he was going to get her to leave her husband was another matter. They would have to wait until they reached their destination, he did not want to rile the wagon master, and get himself thrown off the train. So he would have to show indifference, and stay away from Dorothy, as hard as that may be.
Dusk was settling over the wagon train. People were exhausted. The train was making painfully slow progress along the dry plain of the Platte River; there were no signs of Indians, though Nathan carefully checked for tracks or evidence of recent campsites. Water was starting to grow scarce; the train would have to be careful with supplies.
Lucas Tanner had taken to sleeping outside, next to the campfire not far from the Roseland's tent. It gave him comfort to be close to Dorothy.
"Tanner...you take first watch, I'll relieve you in 4 hours, be sure and wake me." Nathan said curtly.
Lucas was reading by the campfire. "Don't concern yourself McIntyre, I will wake you. Are you sure these precautions are necessary?"
"We are right in the heart of Indian territory, though there has been no trouble lately, I don't want to take any chances. Wake me if you see or hear anything out of the ordinary."
Lucas grunted an affirmative.
Cheri-Sue Roseland has taken quite a shine to Seamus O'Toole. She followed him around everywhere, chattering like a mag-pie. She thought him the most beautiful boy she had ever seen with his emerald green eyes and glorious red hair.
And he was kind and patient with her. He did not tease her like other boys his age had done in the past, nor did he chase her away when she was underfoot.
Seamus for his part was glad of the company. The young girl was feisty and fun, and she relished the stories Seamus told her of his life in Ireland and New York. She listened with rapt attention, her eyes wide and inquisitive.
Seamus was happy to forget however briefly, of the hurt he still felt deep inside over the death of his beloved Da. The young girl eased his anguish a bit.
Cheri-Sue ran to Seamus' arms and embraced him in a friendly hug. She felt so bad he lost his father, she wanted to make his hurt and pain go away. Seamus returned the hug.
She was a sweet little lass, he had to admit, his one true friend on this wagon train, outside of Nathan, the wagon master who he admired greatly.
Seamus left with Nathan to tend the horses and cattle. Cheri-Sue smiled. She would be 14 shortly...wouldn't it be grand if Seamus and his sister settled next to them in California? Her young wistful mind swirled with all sorts of daydreams.
She cared for Seamus very much, and one day, she resolved firmly to herself, one day perhaps Seamus will feel the same!
A few days later, the wagon train came across an abandoned fur trappers cabin in the hills. The stove, after some minor repairs and a cleaning from Katie, was useable.
The women decided to make some fresh bread and other goods to take with them further down the trail. Everyone was excited, fresh bread would indeed be a luxury.
Mrs. Klassen came into the cramped cabin. "Mr. McIntyre says we will camp here today, that will give us lots of time to make some bread and rolls!"
Katie headed for the door. "I'll go get some flour and we can get started...we may have to pick the weevils out first..."
"Wait one minute Katie dear, just between us, what about you and Nathan McIntyre?" Mrs. Klassen asked pointedly.
"Nothing. He is angry with me, I believe." Katie said softly.
Mrs. Klassen smiled. "Hmmm, my mama once told me that men only get angry with women they're sweet on."
Katie flushed visibly. "Don't be silly Mrs. Klassen! Nathan McIntyre is definitely not sweet on me!! As a matter of fact, he strikes me as the type of man who wouldn't be sweet on anyone."
Mrs. Klassen shrugged. "Well, I imagine he was sweet on his wife."
"Wife??" Katie did not know why the news surprised her, Nathan must be close to 30 yrs old, and few men reached that age without being married.
"You never heard the story?" Mrs. Klassen continued. "They were only married a few months and his young bride was killed while she was alone in their cabin."
Katie gasped.
"I guess he never recovered from the shock," Mrs. Klassen sighed. "I try to think of that when he gets a little overbearing. I suppose going through that would turn any man hard."
Katie thought a moment. "I am sure." She agreed sympathetically. "How awful for him."
"He's been guiding wagons ever since, I figure it would be hard for him to settle in California, that's where it happened. Well, I'll start up the stove..."
Katie's mind began to whir with the news she just heard. The tragedy of his young bride must have been why he was so adamant she not continue on the train. Suddenly Katie felt a little more charitable toward Nathan, he was only looking out for her safety.
No wonder he kept his distance from any women.
She sighed and left to get the flour.
Early the next morning Katie came out of her tent to find Nathan washing up. He had his shirt off, his muscular chest on full display. Katie flushed and looked away, but she turned slightly and stole another look. Her insides were quivering madly, she thought back to the kiss, where she was crushed so tightly against the broadness of him.
She forced herself to walk away before he caught her looking at him like he was a delectable dessert.
With his shirt back on and his washing done, Katie then sought out Nathan. She was determined to keep talking to him, no matter how hard he tried to keep his distance.

"Excuse me, Nathan?" she said a little too loudly.
"You had some questions about the trail?" Nathan asked agreeably, but still not as cordial as the beginning of the trip.
Nathan listened to Katie stumble about, asking if the trail was going to get any drier, when the next river would be...he smiled slightly. Lord, she smelled as fresh as the morning, he thought to himself.

Little did either of them know that secret bets were being taken up and down the train on how long it would take the serious Nathan to admit he had fallen for the spirited Irishwoman.
Katie and Nathan were oblivious to the talk, but each encounter they shared brought them closer and closer to a repetition of their first shattering kiss.
Since Nathan's confession of finding her attractive, he had made no other move or changed his tone of voice, however Katie occasionally thought she could see that LOOK in his eyes, but he carefully shielded it by the time she tried to make sure.
Nathan watched Katie walk away. For days now since the Fort, he tried to keep his head clear concerning Katie. He told himself he regarded both her and Seamus as younger siblings. But whenever she was near, whenever he could breathe the freshness of her, take in her clear sweet beauty, he could feel the wall around his heart begin to crumble.
This was going to be more difficult than he could imagine.
Nathan sighed and went to his horse, time to get moving.
That very night, when everyone on the wagon train was fast asleep, the two brothers slipped into camp undetected. Mr. Klassen had fallen asleep on watch, and Flying Eagle and Great Bear easily grabbed a little food and also stole most of the horses that belonged to Cyd Roseland and a few of Klassen's as well. Later that morning, the brothers stopped to rest. Flying Eagle sighed deeply. "We did the right thing. We can use these horses, we can sell them if we have to, they can be food if we need them to be. The white man has starved us out, we have every right to take these horses!"
Great Bear was not so convinced. "Brother, let the horses go free, let us head north into Canada, and forget this."
Flying Eagle would hear none of that talk. "We will rest here for a little while and then keep moving. We will try and find the rest of the tribe, and give the horses to the chief as gifts, we will be the tribe's greatest warriors!"
Great Bear exhaled. There was no arguing with his older brother. He was determined and stubborn as they come.
Great Bear corralled the stolen horses into the gully. He was not feeling good about this; the men from the wagon train would not let the disappearance of these horses go by without any action. They would start tracking them as soon as possible.
The men will be angry..
This was not going to end well.
As Great Bear led the horses, he did not notice that a cavalry officer was watching from above. Sergeant Jeb Fincher watched for a while, and then began to lead his horse down the mountainous terrain into the canyon below.
He was very suspicious of how an Indian came to have so many horses.
Fincher pulled up in front of Great Bear and the horses. "Hold up there!! Stop!" he cried.
Great Bear looked up and was shocked at the sight of the soldier. He could not make out what the cavalry officer was saying, but he yelled for Flying Eagle, who understood English. A great ripple of nausea tore through Great Bear. He did not like confrontations.
Fincher dismounted. Meanwhile Lieutenant Ambrose Burnside was making his way down into the canyon and soon joined his Sergeant. Jeb Fincher sighed deeply.
He should be back home in Maryland, protecting his beloved state. There was a lot of talk of secession, and talk of a war brewing.
Yes, he should be home, not out here in this desolate place. How he longed for the green rolling hills and plush grass of Maryland. He suddenly felt homesick.
Flying Eagle faced Lt. Burnside. "Do you understand me?" Burnside said roughly. Flying Eagle nodded curtly.
"Are these your horses?" Burnside asked.
Again, Flying Eagle nodded. "Taking to tribe, much needed."
Jeb listened nearby. There was no way these horses belonged to the Indians.
Jeb went over and looked at the horses more closely while Flying Eagle and Burnside continued with their conversation.
Flying Eagle was polite, no defiant tone in his voice, and he soon had the Lieutenant convinced of his tale.
"You can go..." Burnside said curtly.
'Wait a minute Lieutenant These horses are shod, and well cared for, they are not wild horses that these Indians just gathered up, they belong to someone..." Jeb called out.
"That's enough Sergeant, I said they could go!" Burnside replied forcefully.
Flying Eagle smiled arrogantly, he nodded briefly to Burnside, turned and left.
Jeb rolled his eyes, 'This newly arrived Lieutenant is as green as grass,' he thought to himself with loathing.
Cyd Roseland cornered Nathan just as dawn was breaking. The horses were discovered missing as soon as Cyd went to feed them.
"When in hell are we going to go after my horses? There is some of Klassen's missing too! All my money is tied up in those horses; I need them! You are supposed to protect our property, and I say you have done a rotten job!" Cyd thundered irately.
Nathan had had about enough of Cyd Roseland on this trip, his temper spilled over. At every Association meeting Roseland continuously questioned Nathan's every move and decision, stirring up trouble every chance he got.
"The tracks say it is Indians that took the horses in the middle of the night, be thankful they did not do anything worse! We do not have the time or manpower to track them, and that is my final word!" Nathan roared.
"Hold up here McIntyre, You can't stop me from going after my property, and if you read those association papers you are so fond of quoting, I have every right to demand you help me find those horses! Now, when are we leaving? You me and Klassen!" Roseland waved his finger angrily.

Nathan grumbled his frustration. The stupid cowboy was correct. "Fine..." Nathan spat. "But only you and I are going, I want to leave Klassen and Tanner to look after the wagon train. They will camp here until we return."
Cyd could not believe his ears. "Only two of us? That is not enough!"
"It is, only two sets of tracks were spotted, I doubt very much there are more, if there are, we can come back to the camp and get more help. For now we are only going to locate, not confront if we can help it, understand me, Roseland?"
Cyd Roseland glared at the wagon master. "Fine."
"We leave tomorrow morning, I have things to do before we go, I want no argument!" Nathan said firmly.
Cyd grumbled and walked away.
That night, Nathan and Roseland were packed and ready to leave at daybreak, so Nathan went over to Tanner to discuss what was to be done in his absence.
"Tanner! Are you sure you will be Ok handling things?" Nathan called roughly.
Lucas sighed exasperately. "I am not incompetent MacIntyre, Klassen and I can handle things here, as well as the other men."
Nathan changed his tone of voice to a less gruff inflection. "Listen to me Lucas, watch the water intake, let no one leave camp, account for everyone every 15 minutes, I am entrusting you with their lives. It is a great responsibility..." Nathan said urgently.
"One you don't think I'm up for? I am not a total idiot, even though you are under the mistaken impression I am. When it comes down to brass tax, I can be relied on." Lucas said in a steady voice.
"All right, I will have to take you at your word. One last thing, you must also give me your word you will stay clear of Roseland's wife while we are gone. There has been enough upheavals on this trip, I don't need you and Roseland at each other's throats."
Lucas looked slightly bemused. "Look to your own romance MacIntyre, and leave me to mine. However I give you my word I will not touch her...for now."
Cyd stood by the fire and listened intensely to the last of the conversation. His jaw worked furiously...stupid prospector! If he goes near Dorothy again he will be sorry...Cyd sneered inwardly. No one takes away what belongs to him, whether it be horses or his wife... no one. Dawn was barely breaking over the hills, Lucas was up when he noticed Cyd Roseland finishing a quick breakfast and getting ready to leave.
He chuckled inwardly. It would not take much to claim Dorothy as his woman, now with that miserable husband of hers away for a few days...
Nathan's words drifted into his mind, he shook his head. He gave his word. 'A man ain't worth nothin' if he ain't got his word...' his late father used to say. Guess the old buzzard was right, Lucas smiled ironically to himself.
Before he left, Cyd went to find Cheri-Sue. He explained he was going to recover his stolen horses. "Now you mind your Ma, or you will answer for it, you hear?"
Cheri-Sue grunted and muttered under her breath.
"Speak up little girl, you know I don't like you mumblin' all the time!" Cyd admonished.
Cheri-Sue put her hands on her hips defiantly. "I said I won't mind Ma! You can't make me! She did something bad and she didn't get punished so why should I?!"
Cyd crossed his arms. "What are you talking about Cheri?"
Cheri-Sue sniffed. "I saw her kiss that blonde man, Mr. Tanner back at the Fort! That's not right, its not proper!"
Cyd felt his blood boil. But he did not show his ire to his daughter. He heard MacIntyre calling for him, it was time to leave. He would deal with Dorothy and that flaxen haired prairie cassanova when he got back. He warned them...both. They would be sorry.
He accepted the warm embrace from Cheri-Sue.
As gruff and distant as her father could be, she still loved him. "Take care Pa..." she whispered.
Nathan and Roseland were off, and as Nathan guessed, it was not hard to track all the hoof prints. He was right, there were only two Indians. In his 6 years of leading wagon trains he had been lucky in his dealings with the Indians. The few he dealt with were on good terms, maybe he could reason with these ones to return the horses no questions asked. Hopefully Roseland will see sense...

Cyd for his part was silent, his mind still processing what his daughter had told him about Dorothy and that prospector scum...
Nathan no sooner let that thought settle in his mind when Roseland said obnoxiously, "I brought some rope with me, you know what we do to horse thieves..." he cackled evilly.
Nathan shook his head; he really could not stand this idiot. "I will do all the talking when we catch up to these Indians, you are not to open your mouth, you hear me Roseland?"
Cyd grumbled and swore under his breath.
Back at the camp, Dorothy found Lucas. "Can we talk Lucas?" she asked bashfully. " I...I wanted to know if you still want Cheri-Sue and me to go with you, or maybe you changed your mind, you haven't been around much..."
Lucas could not help but smile. Dorothy really was a sweet natured woman, just the type he needed to keep him grounded.
"Yes, of course I do, nothing has changed. Only are you sure Dorothy? Being with a prospector does not have as much as a future as being a rancher's wife. It will be hard, we will struggle, we may even go hungry some days..."
Dorothy smiled. "I don't care if we have to beg in the streets Lucas, as long as we are together. I...I love you." she said tremulously.
Lucas kissed her hand passionately. "I love you, never doubt that. I haven't been around because I gave my word to MacIntyre I would stay away. But that promise only holds until we reach California. Then all bets are off. We will be together, no matter what it takes..."

Dorothy sighed contentedly. She could not wait for the wagon train to reach its destination.
Two days later, Nathan and Cyd had caught up to the Indians. There were the horses, intact and seemingly unharmed.
Nathan yelled over to Cyd Roseland. "Stay put on that horse Roseland and do not open your mouth. I know how to handle this and I will do all the talking!"
Cyd grumbled and swore in response as usual.
Flying Eagle walked up to Nathan. He looked at the man on the horse closely. He had seen him before...last year leading a wagon train through these very lands. Jeb nodded, Flying Eagle returned the nod.
"Do you understand what I am saying?" Nathan asked. He introduced himself to the severe looking Indian.
"I do, talk slow..." Flying Eagle replied curtly.
"These horses belong to my wagon train. I am here to take them back. I want no trouble. No harm will come to you if you just give them back and don't bother us again." Nathan said in a steady, strong voice.
Great Bear walked up to join them; he looked quizzically at his brother, who translated in Sioux.
Over on his horse, Cyd was muttering epitaphs.
Great Bear said back to his brother. "Give them back, it is a fair offer. Let us go in peace and have no more of this."
Nathan looked at Flying Eagle. "What did he say?"
"My brother says we should give back horses...you speak truth, we can go if we do?" Flying Eagle said in halting, broken English.
The horses were starting to act agitated; they were tired of being held in the ravine. They were spooked and the slightest noise would certainly set them off.
Nathan nodded. "I give you my word, just let us take them back...I will leave you 4 horses in good faith. Just stay clear of my wagon train."
Flying Eagle smiled slightly and nodded. "You are fair MacIntyre, we will do as you ask."

Cyd could not believe his ears. That idiot wagon master giving his horses away! "NOOO!" Cyd screeched. He jumped down off his horse screaming at the top of his lungs and waving his arms, that was all the horses needed, they took off stampeding straight for where Cyd Roseland stood.
It was too late...
It was an accident, a stupid senseless accident...but it did not lessen the guilt Nathan felt over it. Another loss of life on his wagon train, he felt it most acutely. He never liked Cyd Roseland, but he never would have wished this on him.
Now he would have another woman to see to, a widow with a child. And someone else to bury...
Nathan soon started the gruesome task of seeing to Cyd Roseland. He went over the incident over and over in his mind, it was an accident, he warned Roseland to be quiet and stay on his horse. If only the horses were not so skittery...The two Indian brothers offered to collect the runaway horses for him while he saw to the burial. He would have to bury him here; he could not go three days back to camp with Roseland slung over a saddle, not in this heat. Best to see to him here... Back at camp: Seamus O'Toole adored the puppy he got from his friend, Nathan. It was just the thing to help ease his grief a little. He named the pup 'Dublin' and spent a lot of time caring and playing with him.
It helped passed the time when they were stopped to camp for a few days, like now.
"Wait until we get to California, Dublin! You will have a lot of space to run and play! Da called it 'breathing room'. He wanted that more than anything, and we are going to have it, you, me and Katie. We're a family now..." he nuzzled the puppy affectionately.
Dublin licked Seamus' cheek and woofed cheerfully.
Finally the next day Nathan started back toward the camp.
Jeb Fincher called a halt to Nathan and identified himself. "Those horses look mighty familiar," Jeb grinned sarcastically. "What's your business out here, and where did you get those horses?"
Nathan introduced himself and explained the situation of the stolen horses from his wagon train and that he was on his way back.
"The Indians gave them back without any resistance? I admire your bargaining skills Mr. MacIntyre. And you let the Indians go free, very magnanimous of you."Jeb said.
"Where are you headed?" Jeb asked.
"On the Overland Trail toward California as soon as we can get underway again." Nathan stated.
"I am heading in that general direction myself, I will attach myself to your wagon train for awhile, you could use some help getting those horses back to your camp. I'll head down the trail with you until Fort Halleck if that is alright with you." Jeb replied.
Nathan exhaled deeply. He wasn't too fond of soldiers, too damn bossy by half. But this man seemed reasonable and he could use the help and the extra hand on the trail.
"Thanks Sergeant, I could use the assistance and that's no lie. Just remember it's my train and I am in charge." Nathan said firmly.
"Fair enough, MacIntyre." Jeb replied. 'Let's go..."
Close to three days later, Nathan and Jeb made it back to the camp with the horses. Lucas greeted Nathan, looked at the cavalry officer quizzically and asked, "Where's Roseland, rounding up some strays?"
Nathan shook his head. "He didn't make it..."
Nathan jumped down off his horse and filled Lucas in on the details of the stampede accident. Cheri-Sue was running toward the men. "Where's Pa?" she asked brightly.
Nathan looked at the young girl and said softly. "Go get your ma, Cheri-Sue."

Lucas did not know how to feel, remoseful or relieved over this turn of events.
Dorothy came over, Nathan did not mince words, he gently told them both what had happened. Dorothy covered her eyes in shock and horror, but she did not cry.
Cheri-Sue did enough crying for the both of them. What was to become of them, how could they go on without Pa? Cheri-Sue wondered.
Lucas spoke quietly. "I will take responsibility for them, I will take care and see them safely to California."
Nathan looked at Lucas, the man was serious, his words deeply felt and spoken.
"All right Tanner, I appreciate it. I leave it in your capable hands." Nathan clapped Lucas on the back, he had been wrong about the man; obviously his confused feelings for Katie were clouding his judgement.
And that he cannot allow.
"It seems, I will not be a prospector after all..." Lucas said with deep emotion.
"Do you mean it Lucas? You will come with Cheri-Sue and I to start a ranch? What about your dream of finding gold?" Dorothy asked breathlessly.
"I have found my dream..." Lucas whispered.
Cheri-Sue dried her tears. She listened to the words being exchanged by her mother and Tanner, she found herself greatly moved.
"How about it Cheri-Sue," Lucas asked the young girl. "Is it alright if I come with you and your ma, and help you start a ranch?"
Cheri-Sue looked from her mother to Lucas. As much as she ached for the loss of her father, she was old enough to see the genuine deep feelings pass between the two adults. Perhaps Mr. Tanner wasn't so bad after all. They could use the help.
"Ok..." Cheri-Sue said, her voice quivering.
Lucas impulsively hugged the trembling child. He patted her back. "It will be alright Cheri-Sue, you will see. We will all help each other. Won't we Dorothy?"
Dorothy felt the hot tears swell in her eyes. She nodded and whispered, "Yes...we will."
Cheri-Sue returned Lucas friendly, sympathetic hug.
The three of them walked away toward the Roseland wagon.
"Tragic..." Jeb said. "But looks like a satisfactory resolution for all concerned, This Roseland, he was not very likeable I take it?"
Nathan exhaled. "No, not really. Still..." Nathan sighed again. "Come Sergeant, let me introduce you to the rest of the train. We will try and get underway tomorrow morning."
Later Nathan went off to be by himself, he was still stricken with guilt with what happened to Cyd Roseland. Katie went to seek him out.
"What happened to Dorothy's husband is not your fault, Nathan..." Katie said sympathetically.
"Leave me alone Katie..." His deep voice rumbled despondently.
Nathan turned to face Katie; his features were drawn taut with strain. He appeared to be suffering from some sort of soul-searching that was very painful.
"No, I will not leave you alone. You take on far too much guilt on yourself Nathan. Things happen that you have no control over." Katie said reassuredly.
"I carry guilt for a good reason..." He barked.
Katie held her breath, was he finally going to tell her about his late wife?
"I carry the scars of guilt, it is a wound that will never heal, just when I think it is starting to, the scab gets picked off. First your father, now this..." he said quietly.
"Your guilt goes far deeper than what has happened on this trip Nathan. You are allowing it to overtake your life! You will never be happy if you allow this to continue!" Katie cried passionately.
"You have no idea what you are talking about Katie..." Nathan rubbed the bridge of his nose, then his forehead.
"Does your head hurt?" Katie asked; her voice laced with concern.
"It is something I live with, they come with some regularity when things go haywire." Nathan sighed.
"I think I have some headache powder....I'll go get you some." Katie offered.
"No, I just live with it." Nathan stated flatly. "Just leave me be."
Men! Katie thought with exasperation. But as she saw the agitated look on Nathan's face she realized it was if he almost welcomed the pain, as if it was some sort of penance.
Katie suddenly felt a little sad; Nathan MacIntyre was so set on protecting them all, but who took care of him? He seemed to think he did not deserve to be cared for.

Katie took a few steps toward Nathan, as if to embrace him. He backed away quickly and held up his arms. "No, stay away from me Katie. I told you before, this cannot happen..."
Katie sighed. "You are being silly Nathan, I am trying to console you, to be your friend."
"No!" He snapped. "Not friend and certainly not lover. It does not pay to get your feelings involved with people you have to control. It's as simple as that."
Nathan turned and walked away without looking back.

Katie watched as Nathan left. She did not know how it happened, perhaps it was the first time she saw him on his horse, leading the wagon train out of Westport Landing. She fought it across miles of prairie, but she could not fight it anymore.
She was in love with Nathan MacIntyre.

I am really captivated by Nathan. He definitely has that tanned, rugged, weather worn look. You always do such brilliant work with your research, creations, and designs. I love how this story is unfolding and am curious as to whether or not Katie may draw some attention from the cavalry officer now that Nathan has tried to push her aside. Also am very curious about what happened to Nathan's wife.

Thoroughly enjoyable, though I wasn't too sure about the young girl's very quick acceptance of her new stepfather-to-be. That also seems to have cleared up that entire subplot leaving you with only the Nathan / Katie pairing for part 3 (though, for aught I know, you haven't done with Lucas yet, and further tragedies may be a-brewing). Thanks for showcasing my cavalry uniform, BTW. \:D And I had to make my own Aztec clothes in the end...

Thanks for letting me know this was out, I just love this story. I have a feeling that when they get to Claifornia they are all going to be really close, and it is going to seem like they are all going to be happy living together on a big ranch... but then they'll all leave each other and you will make us cry! One thing I did notice was that Great Bear and Flying Eagle have lighter skin than Nathan, which is pretty odd, I suppose, considering they're native american. Not that it really matters. Love the story.
