In Welsh mythology, Nudd/Lludd Llaw Eraint of the Silver Hand was the king of Britain, while his brother Llefelys ruled Gaul (France), and their sister Arianrhod resided in her faraway castle, Caer Arianrhod. Nudd/Lludd's son was the king of the dead, Gwyn ap Nudd. One day the kingdom was beset by the strangest of plagues, and it was only with the help of the young boy Myrddin Wyllt (the wizard Merlin) that the kings discovered that two dragons were at war in a pit. The red dragon symbolized Wales, which was being beset by the white dragon representing Saxony. The Red Dragon's defeat of the White Dragon would be a good omen for the land, but the dragons fought so much that they had to be put to sleep with mead and buried alive. Thus the wars continue....

In Irish mythology, Nudd's equivalent, Nuada, rule the Irish pantheon of gods, the Tuatha de Danann, long before they ever arrived in Ireland. Upon arrival, they encountered the Fir Bolg, who fought the Tuatha for dominion over the land. Despite the awesome war goddess The Morrigan killing their king, the Fir Bolg still fought on, bringing in their champion, Sreng, who faced off boldly against the Tuatha king himself, Nuada. Though Sreng was forced to surrender, he succeeded in the impossible: cutting off King Nuada's arm. No longer able to fight, Nuada had to step down from kingship, but returned later with a manufactured arm of silver--Airgetlam, 'He of the Silver Hand/Arm'. Not too long afterwards, Ireland was invaded again, this time by the sea creatures, Fomorians, led by the horrible Balor the one-eyed. Impossible to defeat, it was only with the help of Balor's own grandson, Lugh (the Welsh Lleu Llaw Gyffes), that Balor was slain...but not after Nuada was beheaded by him in battle. For his prowess and valiant deeds the throne of the High King fell to Lugh, and the Fomorians were pushed back, Ireland safe once more...for a time....

I based Nudd's appearance on the character the stud muffin actor Luke Goss played in the 2008 Hellboy movie, the Golden Army: Prince Nuada of the Silver Lance, which was loosely based on the Celtic myth. I always loved the look of Prince Nuada, even if they did get his story TOTALLY wrong for the sake of the movie plot, and this gave me a good excuse to try and recreate him to the best of my ability. *Blushes*
