Description
Lleu Llaw Gyffes, the 'Fair-Haired One with the Skilled Hand', was born of magical immaculate conception by his mother, the time and moon goddess Arianrhod of Don, who resented her son and deprived him of the 3 things that makes a man: a name, arms, and a wife. Only due to immense cunning through the help of his relatives was Llew able to acquire all 3--with Arianrhod's own unintentional permission.

In the older Welsh mythology of the Mabinogion, Lleu Llaw Gyffes was born after the maid Arianrhod was tested by her uncle Math ap Mathonwy to prove her purity by leaping over his magic wand. Confident in her innocence, she leapt over the wand, and instantly twins dropped from her womb, onto the floor! Arianrhod fled, deeply ashamed, of course. The first son was clearly a sea god, and the boy, Dylan, immediately retreated to the oceans, but the second son was so mysterious that one of Arianrhod's brothers hides it in a chest, but he grows so quickly that his uncle is forced to take him to Caer Arianrhod and give him over to his mother. There, the bitter Arianrhod refuses to see the entity, and puts a curse on him that he may never have a name, a wife, or the right to bear arms unless she says so. His uncle sneaks the boy back as a servant, and Arianrhod one day witnesses the youth killing game with a slingshot. She remarks that the 'fair-haired one' (lleu) has a 'skillful hand' (llaw gyffes), and inadvertently breaks her own curse! Lleu finally receives a name from his mother.
In Irish mythology, Lleu's equivalent, Lugh Lamhfhada 'He of the Long Arm', is part god (Tuatha de Dannan) and part Fomorian (as are many of the Tuatha; similar to the Greek battles between the elder Titans and the younger generation of Olympians). His grandfather is the monstrous one-eyed Fomorian king Balor, whose gorgon-like gaze can kill with a single look. The Tuatha, presently led by King Nuada (the Welsh Nudd Llaw Eraint) are desperate for a champion to defeat this monster, and Lugh is confident that Balor can be beaten, but he is not allowed into the court unless he can prove himself useful. He asks if the court of Nuada has a wright, a smith, a champion, a swordsman, a harpist, a hero, a poet and historian, a sorcerer, or a craftsman, but the Tuatha has men of all of these roles and he is turned down--before he asks if the court has a man who excels at not one, but ALL of the skills. The Tuatha are stunned by Lugh's multi-faceted talents, and he successfully leads them into battle against Balor, slaying the giant and effectively wiping out the Fomorian army with nothing but a slingshot.
