Hello and welcome to part numero uno of Positive Impact :D
I must begin by saying thank you to Tiff and the rest of my Critique Group, The Write Stuff. Without ya'll I wouldn've had the courage to even attempt this story, let alone upload it!
Now, onto the story --> "So, like I said, just pick up the next hottie you see and take him home." Ellie peered around the rack of silk nighties she was restocking, "Excuse me?"
"Once the deed is done, you'll never have to see him again."
Ellie cringed. Such talk was probably not uncommon in cheap costume-y shops. But since Ellie had bought and transformed the store into A Heart's Desire, an upscale lingerie boutique, crude erotic merchandise was a thing of the past. Ruth's crude language, however, was another matter. "If you're opposed to the sex thing, you could always try that artificial method." "Shh," Ellie hushed. She stalked over to the register. Grabbing Ruth's arm, and none too gently dragged her into the back room.
Ellie spoke quietly. "I told you, and only you, what I'm planning for a reason. If I'd wanted the whole world to know, I would've made a billboard!" To say that Ellie's recent decision to become pregnant was delicate subject would be a gross understatement. After all, it wasn't everyday that a single twenty-five year-old woman chose to have a child. And while it hadn't at all been a split second choice, it was such an un-Ellie-like decision that she wasn't comfortable announcing it to everyone. Or anyone.
In fact, if Ellie hadn't accidentally left a fertility brochure on the counter, even Ruth wouldn't know. "I don't know why you're so secretive about this," Ruth said with a shrug. "It's a modern age. Women can pretty much do whatever the heck they want." She leaned against a stack of unpacked boxes. "Anyway, have you considered all of your options yet?" Ellie sighed. Since making the final decision, she'd thought of nothing else. "I spoke with a specialist, and he said that done artificially, I'd only have a 10-15% chance per month. And he's supposed to be one of the best fertility experts in the area."
Ruth nodded, "So that's out. All natural it is then?"
"He said that might be best. Because of the endometriosis, it could still take months, but at least my budget will stay intact." What had begun as severe monthly cramping in her early teens was now relentless, stabbing pain. A visit to the doctor as a result had revealed what she'd already suspected. She'd been diagnosed with endometriosis, a painful disease that severely declines fertility rates and, if unchecked, could lead to internal scarring or worse.
Surgery was inevitable. But unfortunately, that surgery would be a hysterectomy, making her permanently unable to ever have children. If she was going to have a baby, she'd have to do it soon. "You just need to find a man who will agree to several sessions of relationship-free, no strings attached relations. And what man wouldn't agree to that?"
She sighed again. "That sounds so? sleazy. This is my future child we're talking about."
"Then who?" Walking out of the back room, Ellie held up her index finger. "First of all, he needs to be healthy. No weird genetic diseases that could be passed on." She added another finger. "He would have to be attractive. Not necessarily gorgeous, though that would be a bonus, but reasonably good looking." Ruth followed Ellie and took her position behind the register again. "Uh-huh. Is that it?"
"Well? he has to be nice." There was no way she was spending even a second in bed with a man she disliked. "And finally, he has to be willing to give up any rights to the child once it's born."
Ruth listed off her own fingers. "Healthy, handsome and nice. Who do we know who fits that description?" Their brainstorming was interrupted by the tinkling of bells, a signal of an entering customer. Both Ellie and Ruth looked up. An unaccompanied male in a lingerie shop was a rare phenomenon. And as a previous employee and now owner of a lingerie shop, Ellie was in a position to know.
A man in said shop was rare enough, but an attractive man was about as common as a genuine Louis Vuitton bag for under 100 dollars. In Ellie's opinion, attractive didn't even begin to describe that man heading in her direction. It was much too plain.
Attractive didn't cover the casual, but sexy stretch of limbs with every step he made. Or the stretch of fabric across his broad shoulders and muscular chest. And certainly not the way his low slung jeans hugged his lean hips and long legs. Even his face was too magnificent for such a word. Seductive chocolate brown eyes, lush lips and a strong jaw that had affected many an unsuspecting female in the past. His sun-bleached, dark blonde hair personified the look of the morning-after; irresistibly tousled and Ellie fought the desire to run her fingers through it. But these features had long since been burned into Ellie's mind; so much so that she could recite them by heart if she had to. Given this, she only spared the visitor a brief glance. "Hi Chase." "Hey, El. Our recording session finished early, and I figured that since it's around lunchtime, we could go grab something to eat."
Ellie shrugged and turned to Ruth. "I suppose, if Ruth doesn't mind running things while I'm gone." Ruth grinned and motioned to the empty store. "I think I can handle it."
"Okay, just let me get my purse." As Ellie brushed past, Ruth gave her a wink and nodded her head in the direction of Chase. "Chase," she said out loud. "You're looking very handsome today. Did you get a hair cut?"
He frowned. "Not recently?"
"And I bet you're pretty healthy, right? No disorders or anything to worry about?"
"Not that I know of..."
"One thing I've really admired about you, Chase, is your personality. You're so friendly to everyone." By the time Ellie returned with her purse and keys, Chase looked thoroughly and genuinely confused, and a little freaked out.
"Um, we'll be back in an hour or two Ruth. See you later!" Ellie took Chase's arm in an effort to get out of the store as soon as possible.
But just as they neared the threshold, Ruth shouted, "Ellie, Chase would be perfect!" "What is it that I would be perfect for?"
Ellie took a generous bite of her sandwich to delay her answer. She avoided Chase's gaze, and instead focused on the crowded atmosphere of the restaurant.
The Red Pepper was a popular bar and grill, known for good food and cheap beer. It was conveniently located halfway between Ellie and Chase's respective workplaces, which made it the perfect place to meet for lunch. Chase raised an eyebrow and leaned back. "Suddenly we're so polite? Go ahead, talk with your mouth full. It's not as if I haven't seen you do it hundreds of times. I'm dying to know, what is it that Ruth thinks I'd be perfect for?" He took a sip of his drink. Ellie swallowed. "Sex, Chase. She thinks you'd be perfect for sex." Chase coughed. "Wait, what? I? wow? um?" He didn't even bother hiding his shock. "Yeah, that's pretty crazy," Ellie muttered, looking away. Knowing her as well as he did, Chase recognized her disappointment.
Damn. He didn't want to hurt her feelings. "I'm flattered, really. Ruth's a cool person but, well, I'm not really interested." Ellie's eyes widened and her face split in a wide grin as she chuckled. Soon enough, peals of laughter erupted, loud enough to be heard by nearby diners.
"Feel like letting me in on the joke?"
She wiped a wayward tear off her face. "You think I want you to go out with Ruth?"
"Uh, yeah?"
"No. Ruth was just speaking hypothetically." "Oh." He didn't know whether to still feel flattered, or bothered that Ruth considered him a good prospect for a bed partner. Why had they been talking about him in the first place? Maybe Ellie?
No. He immediately ended that thought before it could turn into something stronger, like hope. He'd learned from past experiences not to hope for things that were never meant to be. Especially not that. Ellie took a last bite of her sandwich and finished the last of her Diet Coke. "Ah," she sighed, smacking her full lips. Chase felt his stomach clench. "Even for TRP, that was good." She stood and grabbed her purse. "I'll pay this time. Be right back."
Chase had to force himself not to look at the tantalizing curve of her backside as she retreated. He groaned. Lusting after his best friend had been excusable in high school, when hormones were raging and Ellie had just been developing. But since then, he'd been able to keep his urges in check. Oh sure, he indulged in a fantasy every once in awhile? him and Ellie, in bed, her hands cupping his face and looking into his eyes as she begged him to? "Ready?"
Chase cleared his throat, acting as if he hadn't just been fantasizing about the two of them in bed together. "Sure." "You seemed distracted earlier when I came by. Was it just the sex thing?"
Ellie gave a small smile. "I've just had a lot on my mind lately. You know, baby stuff." Ellie hadn't exactly been truthful when she'd said that Ruth was the only one who knew. Chase knew too. But not telling Chase would've been like trying to make a decision without a conscience. After being friends for over ten years, there was little that Chase didn't know about her.
"Anything I can do to help?" You could sleep with me. The thought entered her mind before she could stop it. Damn Ruth for putting that idea in her head!
"Um, no," Ellie replied, blushing furiously. "I just need to get some rest."
Chase raised an eyebrow, "Okay. But if you need me, I'm there." They stopped once they reached the storefront.
"Are you still coming tonight?" Chase asked.
Ellie suppressed a smile as she recognized the hopeful note in his voice. "Of course. Ruth's coming too. I hope you don't mind?"
"No, not at all."
Silence. "Well, I've got to get back to the studio. Time is money and all that jazz." Chase leaned over and kissed Ellie lightly on the cheek. "See ya later." "Was it my imagination or did I see you locking lips with a certain man named Chase?"
Ellie rolled her eyes and went into one of the dressing rooms. "Must've been your imagination," she called. "Because the only thing I recall is an innocent peck on the cheek." "I refuse to let you go on believing that the relationship between me and Chase is anything but platonic," she continued from the dressing room. "We're just friends."
Ruth removed a magazine off the shelf and began flipping through it. Ellie thought she heard a whispered, "We'll see." Smoky, dim, and crowded, The Taste of Sin was a fire hazard just waiting to happen. Yet it could draw a crowd like no other. It was located at the edge of the city, giving it a diverse crowd of city dwellers and residents of the suburbs.
Ellie found a seat at an aged wooden table, rubbing at her teary eyes. Personally, she would never choose to go to a place like this. She preferred the smell of men's cologne and women's perfume to the acrid smell of cigarette smoke. She preferred fruity margaritas to hard liquor.
I'm doing this for Chase, she reminded herself, focusing on the stage. The band performing on stage was obviously amateur. The drummer was constantly altering the tempo, the guitarist/singer was too close to the mike, and the bassist was too concerned with standing out to realize that he was off key. "They suck!" Ruth shouted above the drone of the crowd.
Ellie nodded. "My thoughts exactly."
"What?"
"My thoughts exactly!"
"WHAT?"
"Never mind!"
"WHAT?" Ellie sighed and checked her watch. 9:30. Chase wasn't scheduled to come on until 10:15.
I'm doing this for Chase. I'm doing this for Chase. I'm doing this for Chase. "Oh look, Ellie. There's Chase!"
Ellie lifted her head off the table. "What?"
"Onstage! It's Chase!"
Ellie looked at her watch. 10:10. She must have dozed off. She looked up and saw that Ruth was indeed correct. She felt a familiar tug in her chest as she watched her friend step onstage, guitar in hand.
Chase didn't bother with an introductory speech; he simply began to strum a soft rhythm, head bent and eyes down. After a few measures the bassist joined in, a velvety rumble beneath Chase's melody. Ellie looked around the club. The previously chaotic environment had calmed as people sat mesmerized by the performance onstage. Chase had talent alright. He could steal a crowd's attention like nobody she'd ever seen.
She smiled and swayed to the music, transported to a time that seemed so long ago. "El, you've got to listen to this." Fourteen year-old Chase entered the room and pulled his guitar out of it's dusty case.
"Again?" Twelve year-old Ellie made a face. "Don't the last two songs I listened to count for anything?"
"Please, Ellie. I think I really have something this time." He gave her a beseeching look. Ellie let out an exaggerated sigh and closed the book she'd been reading. "Fine. Go ahead." Chase grinned and ran through a series of scales to warm up the instrument.
His grin faded as he launched into a complicated run of arpeggios. His fingers glided across the strings with surprising fluidity. Ellie sat up. Chase continued playing, moving away from the arpeggios to a tune all his own. His eyes were closed and his head bent, as if the music was pouring from his soul. As the music slid around her, inside her, Ellie felt a moisture gathering in the corners of her eyes. She quickly wiped it away as Chase finished, slightly embarrassed that his music had effected her so deeply. Chase looked up as the last strains died away. "How was it?"
Ellie coughed and shrugged. "It was alright." Chase too was enchanted, but not by the music. He looked up briefly and his eyes locked on the brunette beauty across the room. She was rocking side to side, eyes half closed, and a slight smile on her glossed lips. He sucked in a deep breath.
He moved into the next song, still studying the goddess before him in quick peeks.
He crept closer to the mike and voiced the words and notes he'd written only a few weeks before.
All the while he kept his eyes on the woman. Ellie swallowed. As Chase crooned into the microphone he appeared to be staring straight at? her. Perhaps? she was imagining it?
But no. She could feel the heat of his gaze warming her skin. And the fact that he was singing a love song only increased her heart rate all the more. She really should look away; break the hypnotic connection Chase had caused with his soulful eyes and raspy voice.
She didn't. Chase finished his last note, half of it lost in staggering applause. He'd never welcomed the end of a set more than he did at that moment.
The applause died down and people were beginning to stand up, move around, and leave. He felt a wave of panic, afraid he would miss the gorgeous brunette.
Not even bothering to put his guitar away, Chase jumped from the small stage. He moved forward, brushing off "good job"s and "great set"s from the crowd. When the table was finally in sight, he breathed a sigh of relief. The brunette was still there. She was talking to the blonde across from her, nodding and smiling that same small smile. He knew the exact moment she noticed his presence. She stiffed and turned her head in his direction. Her smile widened and she stood. She walked toward him, stopping directly under a low hanging lamp. "Ellie?" Chase's breath stopped his throat. The woman he'd been staring at was? Ellie?! Jesus Christ, he swore inwardly. Damn this dim lighting.
He fought off a wave of disappointment. He'd been looking forward to taking the beautiful woman home with him. Then again, taking Ellie home had quite a bit of merit? God, what was he thinking? Ellie was off limits. Especially to a guy like him. "Yoo hoo! Mr. Aston!"
Ellie heard the voice first. But it still wasn't enough of a warning before she was shoved unceremoniously out of the way by a walking smog of perfume and John Frieda hair care products. Regaining her balance, Ellie looked up in time to watch as a leggy redhead wrapped her slender arms around Chase's neck.
"Darling, the set tonight was AH-MAZING," she heard.
Chase, from what she could see, made no attempt to shake off the enthusiastic fan, which lead Ellie to believe they had met before. She turned around? and almost smacked right into Ruth.
"Going somewhere?" Ruth asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes," Ellie said tersely. "I'm leaving. It's late and Chase is done performing."
"Without saying goodbye?" Ellie looked over to where Chase stood. The redhead was whispering in his ear and he was nodding.
She looked back to Ruth. "I think he's busy."
"And I think you're jealous." "What?! How many times do I have to tell you, Chase and I are just friends. Jeez." Ellie picked up her purse off the table. "I'll see you on Monday." She left, not even daring to glance back in Chase's direction. I'm not jealous. I'm not jealous. She repeated the words over and over as she got in the backseat of a taxi. She was absolutely positively not jealous. To be jealous would imply that she had feelings for Chase beyond those of a friend. Yes, she loved Chase. But she wasn't in love with him. She wasn't even in lust with him. Surely one could pause to admire the sculpted perfection of her friend's body without lusting after them? right? After paying the taxi driver, Ellie walked past her boutique to the set of stairs right beside it. Her apartment was located directly above it, a location that she was most definitely happy about. Needless to say, it made for a fast commute. Once she entered the apartment, Ellie began multi-tasking, checking her mail as she listened to her messages.
"Good afternoon. This is Christine Alley from Regency Insurance. Your payment is due?"
"Hey, it's Chase. I go on at 10:15 at The Taste of Sin. Can you remember that? THE. TASTE. OF. SIN. I still remember last time when?"
"This is Melinda from ABC Pharmacy. You haven't picked up your prescribed birth control medication. You have a maximum of five days before?"
End of Messages. With a wry grin Ellie deleted the messages and went back to reviewing her mail.
"Crap. Crap. Crap. Cr-" She paused as she read the return address on the envelope. The name Joshua Barros stood out as if it'd been written in red ink. Ellie tore the envelope open, ashamed at how eager she was to read it. She read the entire letter, resisting the urge to rip it up halfway through. Angry tears filled her eyes as she clutched the letter in a fist.
How could he do this to her? To her mom? Grabbing her keys, Ellie darted out of the apartment and down the steps into the street. She waved a taxi and didn't hesitate in giving an address.
She knew exactly where she needed to go. "Sweet home Alabama,
Lord I'm comin' home to you"
Chase turned up the volume and sang along with Lynyrd Skynyrd as he ran. Ever since a fellow singer had recommended it, Chase now always sang while he exercised. He wasn't sure if it actually improved his vocals, but it kicked his butt in the area of cardiovascular. He was so engrossed in his workout that at first he didn't hear the faint knock that sounded on his door. The next knock was harder. He heard it.
Chase turned off the treadmill and leapt off the machine.
"Who is it?" he called.
"It's me." The voice was weak, but he could tell it was Ellie. Chase frowned. Something wasn't right. He opened the door.
One look at Ellie and he knew for sure. Her face was flushed and her eyes were moist. She wasn't wearing a coat and had a piece of paper clutched in her fist.
He stood aside and allowed her to step inside. "Now, start from the beginning."
She didn't speak. Only handed him the paper. Chase skimmed through the letter, knowing Ellie was watching for his reaction. By the time he finished his expression was grim.
He didn't say a word. Only opened his arms in an unmistakable invitation. With a small cry, Ellie ran into them.
Damn you, Josh Barros, he thought. Why can't you go away? Joshua Amos Barros was a full time CEO and a part time playboy. It wasn't unusual for him to have at least one or two stunningly beautiful women on his arm, day or night. To him women had a clear place, in his bed or on his arm. And like in business, once someone had served their purpose, they were no longer useful.
He was also Ellie's father. Tatiana Valerie Lansing had been just one in a long string of affairs Joshua had initiated early in his career. Joshua had made his stance on relationships clear from the beginning, but Tatiana was in love. She believed that once Joshua fell in love with her, he would change.
He didn't change. Tired of her constant words of love and marriage, Joshua sent Tatiana home with twenty thousand dollars and a promise to never contact him again. Discovery of Tatiana's pregnancy had only been a minor ruffle in Joshua's feathers. He called his lawyer and within a week had papers for a scared and crying Tatiana to sign. The papers stated that Joshua would give the child his name and financial support in exchange for release of custody and the assurance that Tatiana wouldn't take the story to the press.
And now, seven divorces later, Joshua Amos Barros was inviting Ellie, "his loving daughter", to his eighth wedding. Chase didn't recognize the name, but he had no doubt the woman was young, beautiful and brainless. Chase cradled Ellie in his arms, pulling her into his lap and hugging her against his bare chest. He didn't try to shush her or calm her down, only let her cry. She deserved it. Having a bastard like Joshua Barros for a father was bad enough without him reappearing.
Eventually her sobs stopped, but Chase could still feel the tears that ran from her cheeks onto his chest, mingling with the sweat that still lingered from his workout. It was touching? and slightly erotic. Whoa, buddy. Chase could hardly believe where his thoughts had almost gone. Ellie had come for him for support in a tough situation. Now was not the time to be thinking about how close they were. Or how good it felt to have Ellie pressed up against his chest with her thighs across his. Or?
He groaned inwardly. What kind of friend was he? Ellie thought she was getting a thoughtful friend? what she didn't know was that presently, Chase felt like nothing but a lecher. Ellie wiped her eyes and looked bleary eyed around the room. At first she thought she'd fallen asleep in the armchair watching Cheers like usual. But the apartment around her definitely wasn't hers. It was? Chase's?
The letter, she suddenly remembered. She'd actually let herself believe for a second that it had been a dream. But apparently not. It was all real. As real as the man underneath her. She was almost positive they had started out in a sort of sitting position, but in sleep their bodies had other ideas. Chase was lying in a half sitting half reclining position across three-fourths of the couch. Ellie was facing the opposite way, in a similar position. Her legs were in between Chase's and her head was resting against his arm. The same arm that at present was wrapped around her stomach.
It also hadn't escaped her notice that Chase's chest was completely bare. From previous sightings, Ellie knew that Chase had an amazing bod, and his chest was no exception. Even without seeing it, Ellie could picture the hard ridges of muscle straining underneath a stretch of lightly tanned skin. Light brown hair was lightly dusted over his pecs and stomach, trailing down to the land of unknown beneath the waistband of his trousers.
But just because she had a detailed visual of Chase's chest did not mean she was lusting after him. Ellie detangled herself from Chase's limbs, trying her best not to disturb him. She grabbed the letter from the coffee table ? using all her energy to pick it up lightly and not crush it in her fist ? and tip toed to the front door.
"Ellie." Ellie froze at the husky sound. She slowly turned around.
Though he'd been sleeping soundly, he was now standing, and Ellie wondered how he did it so quietly.
"Ellie, come here."
Not sure what this was about, Ellie complied. Chase took her hands in his and bent his head to meet her eyes. "While you sleeping I did some thinking."
Ellie gulped. She could hear her heart thumping painfully in her chest.
"I know this will probably sound pretty crazy, but I want you to consider it. Okay?"
She found her voice. "It would be easier to consider if I knew what you were talking about." It was her attempt to bring humor into what was quickly become serious. Chase didn't smile. He closed his eyes, breathed deeply and said huskily, "I think I should be the father of your child." (^ Chase attempts to look circumspect)
