The Andretti Legacy
Entry/Episode/Part/Chapter/Installment...whatever you want to call it. It's the 50th one!
Eryn leans into the trash compactor to try and diagnose the problem. The silly thing overheats at least once a week. She's asked Benji to buy a new one for the last few months, but like any husband, he continues to put it off.

The phone starts ringing, and she sets her screwdriver down and makes her way over to answer it.
"Hello?" She asks nervously realizing it's the nursing home her parents are staying in calling.

"Mrs. Curtis, please?" The caller asks.

"Speak...ing." She stutters.
"This is Douglas McGuyer, from the Bluewater Senior Home." He sounds very professional.

"Is there something I can help you with?" She asks quietly.

"I have some news that may be very upsetting for you." He begins. "As you know, your father was diagnosed with cancer back in January, and he was moved to the hospital for treatment. He is rapidly declining, and has asked for you to come set up a will." Eryn sighs softly, she was expecting far worse.

"How is my mother?" She asks quickly.

"She is also why I am calling you today." He pauses, and it hits Eryn like a freight train. She just starts bawling. "She passed away sometime during the night. I am very sorry, Mrs. Curtis." He sounds very sincere.

"Thank...you." She cries quietly, and hangs up the telephone.
At first, she just stares at the phone sitting so peacefully on the wall, and within an instant, she loses it. She falls to the floor in tears, home alone, wishing there were someone she could hold.

***
Once she regains her composure, she paiently waits for the taxi to arrive to take her to her father's bedside. She knew that he had been declining, and with her mother gone, she knew it wouldn't be long before he goes, too. She wishes Emery were here with her, but that won't bring her mother back or cure her father's illness.

***
A few days later, the family heads out to Daphne's funeral. The boys, who don't really graps the idea of death yet, want to go down to the beach and build sandcastles as soon as they arrive back home. Eryn and Benji follow closely behind. The boys carry on having a great time, while Eryn watches the waves roll in.

"I wish Emery were here." She sighs.

"He'll be home soon, I know it." Benji says softly. "They can't keep him forever." He smiles kindly.
"Fletcher will be a teenager before he ever lays eyes on his dad." Ern watches the two play in the sand.

"They'll both be teens at the end of next week. I hadn't realized their birthdays were so close." Benji sighs heavily.

"Yes, honey...we're getting old." She looks over at him smiling as happily as she can considering the motst recent events.

***
They boys birthdays came quickly, and it doesn't take one of them very long to go girl crazy.

"Hurry up! Put your clothes on! Kenzi Sheperd is meeting us on the beach!" Frye bursts through Fletcher's bedroom door quietly yelling at him to wake up.

"Dude! I was sound asleep!" Fletcher whines.

"Get up! She's already down there!" Frye yells under his breath again.
"Who?!" Fletcher yawns and asks with confusion.

"Kenzi Sheperd." Frye says as if in a trance. "The hottest girl in school...and, she's on MY beach!" Frye giggles like a little kid in a candy store.

***
"This is stupid." Ree growls. "I can't believe you woke me up to come out here and meet your stupid wannabe boyfriend." She rolls her eyes and looks back out over the ocean.

"I can't believe you came looking like that! You know he has a cousin." Kenzi shoots her half-sister an evil eye.

"I don't obsess over boys like you do." Ree glares back. "Another reason why I don't know why you brought me along."

"If I didn't, then you'd tell Mom on me. I don't want to be the only one getting grounded for the next month." Kenzi snaps rudely.

"You think bringing me along will make me keep my mouth shut?!" Ree raises her voice.

"You will. I know how bad you want to go to that stupid art convention in two weeks." Kenzi smiled sweetly over at Ree who sighs heavily with defeat.
"Hey, Kenzi." Frye smiles nervously, then notices another girl standing away from them.

"Hi, I'm Kenzi Sheperd. I'm sure you've heard about me." She smiles sweetly at Fletcher. "That's my half-sister. She's antisocial."

"I'm Fletcher." Fletcher smiles kindly back, taking notice of the half-sister.

"I've never seen you before. Do you go to my school?" Kenzi asks with a flirty smile, making Frye very jealous.

"Yep, I'm pretty anti-social myself." Fletcher says proudly still watching the other girl. Sure, Kenzi was drop-dead gorgeous, but she is not Fletcher's kind of girl.
"...oh, that explains why I've never seen you before. Anyway...you wanna go for a walk, Frye?" KEnzi winks at him, and he quickly obeys leaving Fletcher and Ree alone in an awkward situation.

"You don't look very happy." Fletcher chuckles softly as he takes a few steps forward. "I don't want to be here." Ree growls and crosses her arms. "You can go back inside or where ever you want, because you won't get much conversation out of me."

"Hard-headed, too." Fletcher sighs and turns to leave.
"Did you just insult me?!" Ree gasps. "You've never even met me!"

"...well, first impressions would tell me that you had no intention of proving to me otherwise." He says over the waves and continues to walk away. Ree stands there floored, embarassed, and too stubborn to tell him to stop walking away. She's never been real smart with boys.
"If you'd like...I can turn around and we can try an introduction again?" Fletcher offers. Ree likes the idea, but is already wishing she could just click a button and disappear. "No?" Fletcher calls back to her and takes another step forward.

"Oh...alright, come back." Ree sighs heavily and gives in feeling very nervous.
"I'm Fletcher Andretti." Fletcher smiles at her. She may be mad and mean, but something about her he really likes.

"Ree Bayton." She half-smiles back at him.

"You're still mad." Fletcher tells her. "Smile like you're happy to be here."

"But, I'm not." She tells him again.

"Me either. I was rudely awakened and rushed to get dressed to get out here just as I'm sure you were, too. But, I am not rude or mean or mad...I'm smiling like I'm happy to be here." He smiles at her again.

She laughs alittle, showing her real smile by accident.

"There it was!" Fletcher laughs. "I saw it!" She starts laughing again.

"Okay, okay. Fine. You win...again." She smiles sweetly at him.
"So, Ree...is that short for something?" He asks as they both sit down in the sand to watch the waves.

"Yeah...but, I hate it. So, just call me Ree." She informs him quietly.

"...short for what? You won't even tell me?" He looks over at her.
"Freedom." She mutters just above a whisper.

"Freedom!?" He shrieks accidently. She jerks her eyes at him rudely. "I'm sorry...it just came out." He tries to apologize.

"That's why I hate it." She tells him kindly.
"How did you get a name like that?" He asks politely.

"...my mother was married to Kenzi's father. He was a horrible person from what I'm told. Mom couldn't wait to get out of the marriage...and when she did, she met up with my dad...gave birth to me, and named me 'Freedom' because she was finally 'free'." Ree stares out at the water. "She calls me Freedom...everyone else refers to me as Ree. Except Kenzi. She comes up with all sorts of horrible names."
"You probably don't want to hear this...but, I kind of like it." Fletcher says quietly, shrugging his shoulders. "Honest."

"...tell me about your folks. Why do you live with your cousin and his family?" Ree asks softly. Fletcher's heart sinks-he is not ready to talk about it. After a long pause, Ree speaks up. "You don't have to...I was just curious. I understand." She looks over at him kindly.
"My dad...he's a soldier, fighting overseas in the war. I've never met him, but man...I can't wait to. I've always wanted to be a soldier, and just knowing my dad is over there...right now...makes me want it even more." Flecther smiles to himself proudly. "...and my mom, I never got the chance to meet her." His voice quivers.

"...I'm sorry." Ree looks out at the water, feeling awful for bringing it up. "You don't have to talk about it."

"...from what they tell me...she developed a brain tumor. Said it was cancer. Then, they did a c-section and handed me over to my aunt and uncle, and...and then they let her go." Fletcher says quietly.
"...I thought I had it bad." Ree says to herself.

"Oh, I'm not upset by it at all...or think that I've been cursed by some superior power who's out to get me. I have an aunt and uncle and cousin who love me to death and a father who's over there who can't wait to come home and meet me." Fletcher smiles ear to ear.

"That must be nice. My house is all Kenzi, Kenzi, Kenzi. My mother doesn't care what I do with myself because Kenzi is beautiful, Kenzi is funny, Kenzi is popular. Kenzi will marry rich and share the wealth...me, I'm just me. Boring ol' Ree. Kenzi takes all the light...not that I mind, really. She can have it. I'd rather not be center stage my whole life." Ree rambles on. Fletcher can tell it bothers her, just by the way she's talking about it.
"...well, Kenzi is certainly not my piece of pie." Fletcher chimes in. "Too bold and untamed." An enormous smile forms across Ree's face as she can't help but look away.

***
"Come on, Ree." Kenzi and Frye appear behind them. "Mom wakes for work in an hour."She turns to look at Frye. "I'll see you tomorrow...maybe, if Ree would hurry her rear up so we don't get caught."

Ree rolls her eyes, and rises to her feet.
"...see you later, Ree." Fletcher smiles very fondly at her.

"...okay, bye." Ree looks away, not wanting Kenzi to know she's actually had a good time talking with Fletcher.

Kenzi and Frye say their good-byes, and the boys head for the house and the girls head for the sidewalk.
"Dude...are you alright?" Fletcher stares at Frye with confusion.

"Man...isn't she something?" Frye stares off into space with the oddest of expressions across his face.
"Who?" Fletcher asks still wondering what's up with his best friend.

"Kenzi Sheperd." He smiles and closes his eyes.

"Dude...she's got you in a trance or something." Fletcher watches his buddy carefully.
"I think I'm in love." Frye smiles proudly as he brushes by Fletcher to head to his room.

Fletcher shakes his head in disbelief, and swallows hard before heading for his room to finally retire for the night...again.
