Chapter 65

The Andretti Legacy

Chapter 65
"Is he okay?!" Hideki's voice cracks. Hannah hears his great concern, and quietly stands behind him wondering with much worry who he's talking to on the other line. "Just tell me if he's okay!" He seems annoyed; Hannah can hear a female voice on the other end who sounds completely distraught. "Hideki?" Hannah tries to catch his attention.

"I'll be there...I'm leaving now." Hideki quietly tells the woman on the other end, and places the phone back on the wall. "Hannah, we have to go." He tells her as he turns to grab his keys off the coffee table before hurrying out the door. Hannah quickly follows behind him, unsure of everything except Hideki's sudden heartbreak.
"I don't know why you're so upset, Ginnie." Gabe mutters as he tries to position himself in a way to help ease the pain.

"Gabe..." Ginnie whispers quietly.

"So, why did you marry me? Finally...after all these years?" Gabe remains focused on the foot of his hospital bed. Looking at her makes him weak, and he needs to retain all the strength that he possibly can.

"I love you, Gabe..." Ginnie replies softly with confusion.

"No, you don't. You never did." He looks at her once, then quickly looks away.

"No, Gabriel. I always have...I just...it's so hard to explain." She pushes her face into her hands.

"I'm listening." He tells her sternly, expecting an explanation.

"...I...just...I'm so confused...my brain...my heart...everything. You came to me that night...the very instant my brother was taken from me. You came...and replaced him in your own special way. I am still in complete shock...after all these years. My life has been nothing but a complete mess. I know that I love you...I just don't know if I love you as my brother...my friend...or if I love you like I would my soul mate and husband." She looks at him softly, feeling like the worst possible human ever.
Hannah follows her fiance into the waiting room of the hospital still trying to grasp control of the news. Hideki informed her of Gabe's critical condition on the long drive to the hospital. Ginnie had called him from the ambulance en route to the Emergency Room. She told him they were still trying to find out what went wrong before Gabe fainted and why he is so weak and ill now. Ginnie wasn't there, and Gabe can't remember. The doctor's are baffled.

"I'm going to see him..." Hideki whispers softly to his wife-to-be, and heads into Gabe's room. Hannah nods and takes a seat in a nearby chair.
Within a few minutes, Ginnie enters the waiting room looking absolutely dreadful. Hannah rises from her seat and crosses the room.

"How is he?" Hannah's voice is very concerning.

"He's okay..." Ginnie sniffles.

"And you? How are you holding up?" Hannah asks quietly.

"I am...just horrible. I've lead him on...I've wasted his life...and for what...?!" Ginnie rambles on about something Hannah knows absolutely nothing about.
"What?" Hannah looks at Ginnie in confusion. "I don't know what you're talking about?"

"I am terrible, Hannah. I really am." Ginnie wipes a few stray tears away. "I should have known it would come to this...I should have told him long ago...I just didn't know how."

"Ginnie, what are you talking about?!" Hannah raises her voice over Ginnie's ramblings.
"I should have known...it's all been one big lie!" Ginnie burst into tears and sobs of great force and volume.

Hannah wraps an arm over Ginnie's shoulder, still completely lost, but trying her best to comfort her.

"Hideki has always admired Gabe...and if Gabe tells him, Hideki will hate me...just as I hate myself for the things that I've done." Ginnie spits out her words in an absolutely heartbreaking way.

Hannah continues to hold Ginnie, at a loss as to what to say to comfort such an emotion. What would she say? She doesn't understand what's happened, and she surely won't speak for Hideki on something that tears his aunt apart so viciously.

"Come on, sit down. You need to sit before you fall over." Hannah leads Ginnie to a chair on the far wall where she slowly sits. Hannah pulls some tissues from the box, and hands them to Ginnie before sitting herself beside her.
After an hour or so, Hideki emerges from Gabe's room looking very pale and distraught. Hannah can't even begin to imagine what kind of drama is to follow. Whatever is going on, must be horrible.

She wants to jump up and comfort him, but what is she comforting? How can she be of any help if she doesn't know what she's trying to do?
He slowly sits down in a chair closest to him, and stares into the empty waiting room. His mind is racing with questions and anger and deep sadness. His heart carries too many emotions and it's painful for him. Ginnie stares at Hideki, everything about the way he is sitting there breaks her heart. She's terrified of what Gabe has told him, and she can tell that whatever it was, it wasn't good.

"I don't know why...but he wants to see you." Hideki shoots an evil glare across the room at his aunt. She hesitates, and then quickly rises to her feet and rushes into the room.
"Ginnie..." Gabe looks at her as she slowly closes the door behind her. She waits for direction, as tears start to fall again. "Come and sit down."

She sits in the chair beside him, still warm from it's previous inhabitant. She closes her eyes, completely afraid.

"Gabe...please, don't leave me like this. I'm not asking for forgiveness...but, just something that tells me you can at least understand." She swallows hard, and can feel her stomach twist and turn with his silence.
"...I don't blame you, Ginnie. I came into your life at the most awkward and unreasonable time. It isn't like I planned it that way." He whispers as a cold chill runs up his spine. "I knew the minute I saw you that you were her...the one I'd dreamed about ever since I was a little boy."

"Gabe...I never told you any of this, because I was afraid that you would be disappointed and you would leave me...and you would leave Hideki, the one who needed you most. I am not a mother, Gabriel. I never was...I never will be. I don't know what that means...motherhood. But, you...you were one heck of a father, a great role model for Hideki to grow up with. I will always remember that."
"...is everything okay?" Hannah asks quietly as she reaches his side of the waiting room. "I don't have a clue what's going on here...but, I am here for you...for all of you."

"I've heard...the most disturbing things. I'm questioning her...everything about her. All the memories...and all the advice...he didn't seem as bothered as I am, but I guess he knew from the beginning." His voice cracks and breaks as he mumbles the words. "You love me...right? No doubt...without a question...no confusion?" He looks up at her with deep pain.

"...I promise you, have no worries." She whispers quietly.
He rises from his chair and hugs her with the most caring and loving embrace he can offer.

"I promise." She whispers again, as tears form in her eyes as she suddenly figures out what has happened.

The truth has come out.
Gabe reaches out his hand, and places it on Ginnie's lap. She wraps her fingers around his and gasps at the ice cold fingers that once were warm and loving.

"I love you, Gabe...either as a brother, a friend, or my husband...I love you. You will always be a part of this family. You will always be dear in my heart, even if I can't sort out where you belong...I know you belong there somewhere. I promise." Ginnie whispers through her tears.

"I understand..." Gabe's voice slowly dwindles down before he can finish his sentence. His fingers slowly relax their grip on her hand, and he rests his head back on his pillow for the last time.

The monitors sound off, and the room is filled with doctors and nurses who try to revive him. Ginnie steps back, and waits for them to determine that he's gone and not coming back.
As she slowly exits the room, Hideki stops her with a very angry tone.

"I hope you don't expect me to forgive you." He growls from behind his broken heart.

"I never asked you to, honey." Ginnie begins to cry. "I know that you are too upset right now to even fathom my reasons for the things that I have done. But, if there ever comes a time when you think you can listen to me, I'll be waiting." She wipes tears from her cheeks as he brushes by her, nearly knocking her over.

"I never want to speak to you again...much less see you." He looks back at her before storming out of the waiting room, Hannah obediently follows.
Hannah turns just before closing the door behind her. Ginnie stands in the middle of the room, completely broken. Hannah's heart wants to reach out for Ginnie, but also reach out for Hideki. The strain breaks it in two.

"Tell him...that I love him." Ginnie whispers through her sobs.

"...I will. I promise." Hannah replies quietly, and leaves the waiting room in search of her love.
