When the four arrive at Arthur and Jackson's house, they're all extremely tired. Jackson and Brendle retire to his room, and Amelia waits awkwardly in the living room, not knowing where she can sleep.

Arthur walks in the front door and notices her still standing there some ten or fifteen minutes after he'd gone outside to unload the bags from the taxi.

"...you're still up?" He asks quietly.

"I didn't know where I could sleep." She admits, wondering what was going through his mind right at the moment.

"You can sleep in my bed, I'll sleep on the couch." He offers, not wanting to sleep on the couch. Jackson had bought it because he liked the way it looked, and that never works out. It's terribly uncomfortable.

"Are you sure?" Amelia asks seeing that he'd rather not sleep on the couch. "We can share the bed. I sat on that couch a few minutes ago, and my gosh...it's like a stadium bleacher!" She laughs kindly.
"...okay." Arthur smiles softly, thankful that she didn't mind sharing his bed for the night. The girls arranged for the movers to move all their belongings out here by tomorrow. Amelia will rent the other half of the duplex, and Brendle will live here with Arthur and Jackson once they're married.

It's a very boring place, but it's all Arthur and Jackson could afford. Besides, they were just two bacehlor's at the time, they didn't need much.

But, now that Jackson plans to marry Brendle and raise their child, he needed to start thinking ahead and this tiny duplex isn't in his plans.

******************
The wedding is beautiful. Amelia spent hours perfecting the empty house to try and make it a pleasant environment, as it was too cold to celebrate outside. Arthur's mother even tells her how pretty she thought the place looked and that makes Amelia's day.

Arthur, feeling somewhat angry, finally smiles when Jackson kisses his new bride. Since Brendle broke the news to him, he's been an entirely different person. He's jumping into a marriage, that's certainly not him, he's got big plans for his child, and he's never liked children. He's never even liked commitment. The whole situation gives Arthur a headache. After the kiss, everyone gives the two a standing applause. Jackson stares back at his new wife wondering what in the heck he was thinking. Sure, she's beautiful...but, not for the rest of his life. "Jackson, this is the best day of my life." Brendle smiles as they turn to face the guests.

"Mine, too." He smiles out at the crowd with a feeling of shame.
"Brendle!" Amelia rushes over to her best friend. "You're so beautiful!" Amelia hugs her. "I'm so happy for you."

"...I've never felt this happy in all my life." Brendle smiles ear to ear.
"Well...I'm happy for you, bud." Arthur smiles as he hugs Jackson. "May it be long and fulfilling for both of you." After the ceremony, everyone starts dancing and having a great time. Arthur dances with his mother, and his father takes Amelia's hand. ... ... The follwoing night, Brendle walks over to Amelia's house. She'd finished moving in and decorating with the help of some neighborhood kids wanting extra cash, and Brendle, as nosey as always, wants to see.

"Oh my gosh, Amelia." Brendle inhales deeply. "This place looks great!" She smiles ear to ear as she heads into the kitchen.
"My goodness girl, what are you wearing!" Amelia gasps as she turns to face her. "Tomorrow you won't be able to fit in that anymore!" She laughs.

"I want to enjoy my figure while I still have one!" Brendle smiles, and it fades as quick as it came.
"I really came over here, because I've some news." Brendle sighs. "You probably won't like it...but, I've no choice."
"Uh oh...shoot." Amelia smiles kindly.

"Jackson and I, we've decided to move. We're going to leave Arthur the house, and move South. He doesn't like the snow, and would prefer our kid to be comfortable and be able to play outside without ten layers of clothes on." Brendle tells her softly.
"What!?" Amelia screams. "You're leaving me!? Brendle...I moved her to stay with you...you and your kids and family...Brendle!" Amelia isn't sure if she's ticked or just upset. It's all so sudden, and she can't seem to straighten her thoughts. "You guys can't....you can't send Arthur here and stay there?" Amelia shrieks on the verge of tears. "Honey, you ready to go?" Jackson interrupts them as he opens the door and walks right in.

"Yeah, I'm coming." She smiles sweetly at him, as if transfixed.
"Go?!" Ameila looks at Jackson. "Now?!" Amelia shakes her head in confusion.

"The van's waiting, okay, Brendle." Jackson smiles at her, ignoring Amelia, and leaves her house.
Amelia takes one look at Brendle, as a tear slides down her cheek. Brendle looks away quickly, and sighs softly.

"I'll see you around...okay?" Brendle says as she heads for the door. As it closes shut, Amelia breaks down into tears.

*****************
Six months later...

NOTE: Please ignore Amelia's sunburn. For some reason, it simply will not go away and we must get on with the story! So, for the story's sake, pretend like she doesn't have a sunburn anymore. :(
"Well, how are things with you?" Brendle asks quietly on the other end of the line.

"Oh, they're good. I still work at the firm...hopefully getting a promotion soon, but you know how that goes. They'll say anything to get you to stay." Amelia smiles.

"I meant with you and Arthur." Brendle sighs sternly.
"...well, uhm...we don't really talk anymore." Amelia says as she turns to look out her window at his house. "He keeps to himself. I never see him come or go anymore."

"That's a shame, Amelia." Brendle says quietly. "He was crazy about you."
The thought silences Amelia, she hadn't thought about Arthur in that way in a long, long time.

"Amelia?" Brendle calls.

"I'm here." She whispers quietly.

"Well, I guess I better be going. I'll talk to you later."

"Okay, bye." Amelia says and Brendle's phone clicks.
Arthur spends most of his time keeping in shape. He'd graduated from Boot Camp a little over a month ago, and is trying his hardest to be considered for an officer position in the military. His father is very, very impressed with him and he hopes to live up to his dad's expectations and make himself as fine a soldier. But, there are times when Arthur can't shake Amelia from his thoughts. He hasn't talked to her in well-over five months, and he wonders if she's even still moderately interested in him. Jackson keeps telling him to go for it, but Arthur is terrified of her rejecting him...again. The next morning, Arthur exits his house and heads for the trashcan. He notices Amelia laying on the bench, and hopes she doesn't notice him. He's not sure he can handle the stress she'd bring, but at the same time, he wishes he had someone to share his stress with. As he sets his bag in the can, Amelia sits up.

"Oh,it's you." She yawns softly. "Good morning." She smiles.

He smiles back politely, and turns to leave.
"Can we talk?" She calls back at him, and he stops in his tracks. "Arthur?" She looks at him, his back is towards her, and she can see a thousand things running across his mind. He sits down beside her, not wanting to hurt her feelings.

"I've been thinking a lot lately." She begins. "I haven't seen or heard from you in nearly six months."

"I've been busy." He says vaguely.

"Me, too." She smiles kindly.
"...I was hoping, well...I was hoping you and I could spend more time together. I really miss having a friend, and with Brendle gone so far away...it's hard." Amelia sighs, missing her friend.

"...hard?" Arthur scoffs quietly.
"...what's that supposed to mean?" She asks defensively, and Arthur remains silent. "Arthur Andretti!" She raises her voice. "Your life is anything but hard, Amelia." He looks at her angrily.

"How can you say that?" She shouts back at him, angry at herself for even thinking of talking to him.
"Hard? ...Amelia, hard is sitting inside my house...all alone...watching my next door neighbor, the love of my life...leaving a few nights a week to go hang out with friends, leaving on Friday and Saturday nights to go on dates with random men, then going to work everyday with a smile on your face...pretending that I don't even exist. I don't know how you do it, Amelia! I don't know how you pretend that we're complete strangers! I honestly don't! I wish I did, then again, I wish I didn't because it makes me sick." "...I make you sick, Arthur?" Amelia's heart breaks. He's right, though. She's never changed her ways, and it is a different boyfriend every week...even after all these years.

"You'll never change, Amelia. I waste my time on you, and I hate it." He says softly as a tear rolls down her cheek.
"...you won't even give me a chance?!" She shrieks.

"Amelia...I can't count the numbers of opportunities I've given you." Arthur sighs heavily. "I'm sorry...but, I'm done wasting away wishing you'd notice me...for at least one day out of your life."
"...well, I'm sorry you feel that way." She inhales deeply, and rises to her feet. She leaves Arthur feeling somewhat ashamed, somewhat moved, and somehow more in love with him than she's ever been.
