"It seems like just yesterday." She whispered aimlessly. "I remember everything." A warm tear rolled down her cheek. She'd been crying so much, she figured they'd be eroded by now. She missed him terribly, it killed her knowing that he hadn't gone peacefully. P.O.W.'s seldom see mercy on the hands of their captors. What killed her the most was that he and Arthur will never meet...he will never know that Arthur even exists. All Arthur will know is that his Daddy was a war hero, a very brave and proud soldier cut down in his prime.

It had only been a week since the funeral, and already the earth was returning to it's previous flat level as if to tell her he was gone for good. She hated that. She'd wished the land would stay elevated...in some way it allowed her to accept her late husband's fate on her own terms, in her own time.

******************* Arthur was a good baby. She was thankful for that. He never cried, never complained, and was always able to entertain himself.

Jobs were scarce, but she NEEDED one fast. She searched and searched. She hadn't needed one before, but now that she'd unintentionally become an independant, she needed to find something. Anything. But, no one would take her.

She's no educational background other than college, she's never had a job before, she's always had Arthur's father. Always...

********************* "Hey, Andi." Brandi stops her before she checks the mail.

"Hi." Her voice is sad and quiet.

"...I just wanted to check on you and Arthur." She says softly. Brandi has known Andi for years, and they've always been the best of friends. But, with the recent tragedy, Andi has isolated herself and has lost most her friends. "Arthur is just fine. I think he knows something's wrong, but...he wouldn't understand even if I told him." Andi sighs.

"...he'll ask one day." Brandi looks at her best friend who seems to be fading away.

"And I'll tell him one day...but, today is not the day...or tomorrow...or the next day." Andi looks down at the sidewalk. She remembers the last time she saw her husband, it was this sidewalk. He was getting into a taxi looking back at his pregnant wife. "Andi, I'm still here for you...you know that right?" Brandi chokes up. "I don't know what it's like...but, I know that you and I have become so distant. I don't like that. I just want you to know that whatever you need...anything...I'm always here." "I know...I really do. I just...I don't know. It's a weird feeling...one that I can't bring my self to talk about just yet." Andi looks away.

"I'll call you later...okay? We'll go out for dinner sometime." Brandi sighs, hugs her fading friend, and heads home.

********************** Just before bedtime, Andi sits down to play with Arthur as she always has. She notices that each and every day, he looks more and more like his father. The thought brings a smile to her face. She loves Arthur dearly, and to know that he is the spitting image of his father reminds her that he's not gone forever. "No honey...it goes here. You're not supposed to play it on your teeth." She laughs. He starts laughing like he's never laughed before, and for a moment Andi forgets her husband's death and cherishes the moment and laughs with her son. He continues to play and laugh, and Andi continues to soak it up for the rest of the night, putting Arthur to bed three hours later.

********************* The next morning, before the sun rises, Andi is back on the computer searching for a job. Amazingly, she receives an email from a company she applied to over a week ago. They've hired her! It isn't much...all she has to do is supervise the after school yearbook club. With a great smile on her face, she rises to her feet to go to the aid of her screaming son. "Arthur, Mommy got a job today. So, you have to be good for the babysitter." She smiles as she takes him out of his highchair after breakfast. He giggles, and she sets him on the floor to play with his toys.

She heads to her room to prepare for the big day. She styles her hair a bit differently, and puts her face on with different shades. At first, she doesn't like what she's done. She feels as though she's gone overboard. But, then she realizes she needs this. A new start. A fresh new start.

The nanny soon arrives, and Andi leaves for work in a great mood.

********************* The minute Andi arrives home, she rushes inside and picks up the phone.

"Brandi?" She says happily. "You've got to come over!" "Why?" Brandi asks happily, she hasn't seen Andi this happy in quite some time.

"I've got GREAT news!" She smiles ear to ear and hangs up. Before Brandi even has time to ring the door bell, Andi is outside hugging her tightly. A little shocked and creeped out, Brandi stares back at her friend with the oddest expression. "Well...what's got you on Cloud Nine?!" Brandi laughs thankfully. "Well...I got a job!" Andi smiles happily.

"Really? Andi, that's great!" Brandi congratulates her.

"And a promotion!" Andi claps her hands. "Andi!" Brandi shouts. "That's awesome!"

"Things are looking up for me Brandi Broke, you just wait and see." Andi smiles with that happiest smile she can make.
