This portrait is presumed to be of James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell and the third and final husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. It is strongly suspected that the Earl of Bothwell had a hand in the murder of Darnley, though his reasons are obscured by time. After fleeing from Scotland, James Hepburn traveled to Denmark where he remained imprisoned and insane until his death.

Lucky enough to gain the hand of James I's daughter Elizabeth, Frederick was singularly unlucky in politics. After the Hapsburg King of Bohemia died, the Bohemians who were mostly Protestant, invited Frederick to be their King. Unfortunately, the Hapsburg Emperor took offense and Frederick found himself stripped of Bohemia and the Electorate of the Palatine before he died.

The last monarch of Scotland until Charles I to ascend the throne as an adult, James IV married Margaret Tudor in an effort to bring peace to the British Isles. However, not long after their second son was born, James tried to take advantage of Henry VIII's absence in France to attack England. He died at Flodden Field at the hands of an army gathered by Catherine of Aragon along with most of the Scottish nobility.

James V, son of Margaret Tudor, shown here with his second wife, Mary of Guise and Lorraine. James V died not long after the birth of his daughter, Mary Queen of Scots, with the words "It began with a lass, it ends with a lass". His death left Mary of Guise to struggle with her daughter's regency and maintain the "Auld Alliance" with France for almost eighteen violent years.
