Alfred E. Neumann was named so when MAD started using him as a ''cover boy'' in the 1950's, but he smiling boy had been around in cartoons long before that, possibly since the early 20th century, where similar charecters existed in german magazines. This picture is from the 1920's, pre-MAD, and the copyrigth has expired..
