A year later then she would have liked Annette was able to go and visit Faye at university... she was a little shocked at the dress Faye was wearing. “Is it not um... a little short darling?” Faye giggled and hugged her mother. “Well, I could be wearing something worse; you should see what some people wear here.” Annette shook her head and followed Faye inside. Faye cooked a simple dinner and her mother joined her at the small table. “Your father did not take the news of you leaving for university well dear. But he did get over it after a few days. He even mentioned it to his friends and they congratulated him for you getting into the university. I must say, you’ve fixed up your father’s old place well too. Have you met any society members yet?” Faye stopped eating and looked at her mother oddly. “Society members? What are you talking about?” A strange look crossed Annettes’ face before she forced an odd smile Faye had never seen on her mother’s face before. “Oh, it’s nothing darling. But you should get out more and meet people here; you’ll be surprised at the results you know.” Faye looked at her mother for a moment before shaking off the odd feeling. “So, when is Tom’s birthday party? I have a wonderful gift idea for him.” Seeming happy about the change of subject, Annette began to chatter on about the party arrangements and who was invited. As the evening grew late, Faye bid her mother goodbye promising to make the party early.

I have a wonderful gift idea for him.” Seeming happy about the change of subject, Annette began to chatter on about the party arrangements and who was invited. As the evening grew late, Faye bid her mother goodbye promising to make the party early. At the end of that month Faye arrived back at home to celebrate Tom’s birthday party. It was a small occasion but her father had provided sparklers which everyone loved and ended up having a great time. Especially Tom who ripped open all of his presents eagerly. “Faye, what did you get me?” Tom looked at Faye; she could hardly believe he was now fourteen and turning out to be a handsome young man. Smiling, Faye excused herself them came back inside carrying a large red box that had holes punched all over it. She smiled as she set the box down and stepped back. ‘Now open it carefully little brother.” Though excited, Tom carefully opened the gift to find a wriggling puppy inside. Tom picked it up and it licked his face wriggling in his hands happily. “Oh Faye, this is great! I’m going to call him Leroy.” Faye laughed. ‘Alright, but he’s a Great Dane, so he will grow big you know.” “Perfect.” Thomas smiled, “Just what we wanted, another large stomach to eat us out of house and home.” He chuckled and Faye couldn’t help but laugh herself, she knew her father was still out of sorts with her being at university as well as not marrying the man of his choosing, but he seemed to be settling into the idea of her being who she was; even if it wasn’t who he had thought she would turn out to be. The clock in the hall chimed ten thirty and Faye got up from her seat. “Well I must be off; I have an exam in the morning, take care of Leroy Tom. And don’t let him get fat.” Faye kissed everyone goodbye and took a cab back to uni. The next day was a Saturday, and after Tom rang to wish his sister good luck in her exam, he decided to invite around William for a visit. William arrived half an hour later and seemed happy to talk to him now that he was older. ‘You know, my little sister has been banging on about you all winter, I can’t think why but it’s getting nauseating. Maybe you two should see each other sometime, and then she might be quiet about you.” Tom laughed. “Sure, why not. We won’t be able to go fishing though, the pond’s frozen over.” “Lillian... was fishing?” William laughed. “I doubt she’d go fishing now, she’d be afraid to break a nail or something.” Tom shook his head. “When did she get back from school?” “Meh, about a week or so ago, but all of her letters were asking about you all of the time. I’ll let her know you are happy to see her if you like.” Tom nodded. “Sure, it would be nice to see her again to catch up.” William and Tom went upstairs to the games room to play snooker for a while before William left just after dusk. To Tom’s surprise, Lillian was around to see him the very next afternoon. She had grown taller and was turning into a young lady very fast. At first Tom wasn’t sure it was her or not. “Come on, let’s have a snowball fight like we use to when we were kids. We’re not allowed to do that at school, the school mistresses say it’s not ladylike and all that nonsense.” Laughing Tom followed her out to the front yard where they played in the snow for hours until their fingers were numb. Tom wasn’t sure how he felt about Lillian, but he knew that he had missed her while she had been away and was happy to be around her again like they used to be when they were children. As they went back inside for hot chocolate he considered calling Faye to discuss the matter with her. He always felt comfortable talking to her about private things, and this he felt was private. Later that evening at the Goodwin house, while Lillian was fishing in the family pond, William had gone out to the front garden to fix a lamp for his mother. Though he had commented that they just hire someone to do it, she had insisted in case somebody came around for a late night visit and broke their ankle on the pathway trim. Finishing off the lamp, it now illuminated the front path. As he turned back towards the house, William noticed a girl standing on the outside pathway watching him. He had never seen her in the neighbourhood before. He boldly walked over to her and introduced himself. “Good evening. My name is William Goodwin, nice to meet you young miss.” The girl looked at him neither moving nor speaking, her arms folded coldly. As William went to walk away she spoke, her voice was soft and hollow, but pleasant all the same. “I am Lady Juliet Morfran. Good evening to you as well.” William looked at her raising an eyebrow for a moment. “I haven’t seen you around before.” “That is because my family only moved here a week ago; mother and father opened up the Morfran Saloon”, Juliet replied. “I have seen your parents there already for a drink and a game of poker. My father was worried nobody here would want such an establishment; people seem to keep coming though. So they must.” William walked over to where she was standing, “Ah yes, my father mentioned meeting your father, he said he was a nice enough, your mother was playing the violin, and so my mother did not get to speak to her.” Juliet nodded looking to the sky for a moment. “Yes, she taught me to play. She plays so the customers can relax. Excuse me I must be going, they will be awake soon and I am helping with customers tonight. Goodnight William, we will see each other again.” Without another word, Juliet walked off. William watched her go into the large mansion at the far end of the street. The light to downstairs and upstairs switched on and he could see some movements in the downstairs quarters of the house. He had never been intimidated by anyone, but Juliet seemed to have an upper hand on him, and she had only just moved into town, as if from no-where. Going back inside, he couldn’t shake off an odd, almost hypnotised feeling he had gotten from Juliet, he did want to see her again but wasn’t sure when he should. Later that evening as William was about to climb into bed, he heard an unusual noise coming from under his bed. He had heard the noise many times before and never thought to look to see what it was. This night he decided to look under the bed to see what it was. “If that’s a rat I’m calling the rat catcher.” He muttered to himself looking under the bed. Seeing nothing he stood back up. “I was human, not a rat!” The ghost of a young girl suddenly appeared before him. “EEEEKK!!!” William screamed like a girl jumping back banging his leg on his side table. The girl vanished as his parents and sister came running into the room. “Whatever are you screaming like that for?” His father demanded crossing his arms. William rubbed his now sore leg “There... there was a... a ghost, right there!” William pointed to his bed, his parents and sister looked at his empty bed then back at him. Lillian giggled and walked off. “She might want a date.” She muttered between laughing. William’s parents shook their heads and closed the door leaving William by himself. Carefully he crawled into bed and lay awake for a long time before he managed to get back to sleep. The next few months passed quickly at uni for Faye with her studies. One evening Faye had just come from class to see a young man standing below her porch. When he turned around Faye gasped to see it was Lucas. He had grown into a very handsome young man, she restrained herself from running and throwing her arms about him, but could not hold back the smile on her face and she approached him. “Faye, your mother told me where you lived here. I wanted to come see you.” He took her hand and kissed it lightly. “Also, I have to confess that I have missed you.” Faye had not stopped smiling and felt like she was a teenager again for a moment. “I sent you letters, did you get them?” Lucas nodded. “I have kept them all. How are your studies going? You only have a year or so left don’t you?” Faye nodded. “Yes, not long now and I’ll be moving back home afterwards.” They stood silent, both unsure what to say for a moment in the fading light. “How’s your mother?” A sad looked crossed Lucas’s face. “She’s ill, I managed to get a job as an architects’ apprentice to help pay the bills and her medication.” Faye couldn’t think of anything to do but hug Lucas. She held him tightly for a long time before he gently pulled away. “I must get going; keep writing to me won’t you?” “Oh of course I will!” She exclaimed. Lucas kissed her cheek softly and waved goodbye walking off down the pathway. Faye watched after him, even when he was gone from sight. Her feelings had not changed about him, and she was glad to see his feelings had not changed for her either. A few weeks later, Faye had gone to one of the study halls to catch up on some of her work. A girl came up to her when she finished putting back a book on the nervous systems. “Faye Vaughan?” “Yes, that’s me. Can I help you?” The girl wore a strange blazer with a symbol on one side. “My name is Ivy; I’ve seen you about campus and wanted to say hi.” “Oh, well... hi. Nice to meet you.” “Can I buy you a coffee?” Not wanting to be rude Faye accepted and sat chatting for a while with Ivy. Both seemed to have things in common and she found Ivy was studying to be a vet. After an hour or so Ivy excused herself to go to a class. Walking back home, Faye couldn’t help but wonder about the strange symbol on the girls blazer. ‘Maybe she’s part of some fraternity house or something?’ She pondered as she went inside her place to make herself some supper. After supper she focused on her term papers and only briefly thought about it again as she crawled into bed. ‘Maybe I should talk to father about it. He might know what the symbol is.’ During the night, Faye awoke to some strange man coming into her bedroom. “Get out of bed; you are to come with me.” Faye sat up half groggy and shook her head to wake up. The man tossed her clothes at her. “Get dressed.” ‘What, who are you, what are you doing in my apartment?” She quickly dressed over her pyjamas; the man suddenly produced handcuffs and handcuffed her hands behind her back. “Hey, what are doing? I’ll call security on you.” “We are higher than the security Miss Vaughan.” Unable to protest much more, Faye let the man lead her outside to a waiting limousine. “Watch your head.” He muttered shoving her into the back seat and blind-folded her. She felt the limousine move off, her mind blurred with what was happening to her but she could hear no one in the front seat. After a long while the limousine stopped and she was pulled from the back seat by someone else. The blindfold was removed and she saw Ivy standing in front of her beaming happily. A huge castle type place stood before her, more people came out. They were all wearing the same blazers as Ivy and began to clap and cheer for her. “What... what’s going on?” Ivy laughed and handed Faye her own blazer. “Welcome to the Secret Society of Vol au Vaunt. You are our newest member.” Ivy helped Faye put on the blazer and cheered for her with the others. “Oh, ah... thank you. What do I do here?” Ivy laughed. “Anything you want within reason. Only the smartest students of the university are allowed into this society. We’ve been monitoring your results for the past year and a half now. Here you can study in the most lavish comforts available without being bothered by others. Oh, and don’t worry about the cow-plant. Just don’t take the cake from him, that’s his way of getting rid of pesky people who intrude here.” Faye noticed a huge Venus-fly-trap looking plant sitting out the front of the castle and nodded looking back at Ivy. “Ok, sure. Um, would it be alright if I went back home, I have an exam in the morning, I have to get some sleep.” Ivy laughed patting her shoulder. “Sure thing, I’ll get the limo to come and pick you up. Remember, anytime you want to come here, just call the new number in your phone under V.L.V., a limo will come to bring you here.” Faye nodded watching Ivy and the others wander back inside the castle. A limo arrived soon after and took her back home. Once home, Faye hung the blazer up and sat on her bed looking at it. She wasn’t sure when she fell asleep, but she awoke to her alarm going off, letting her know she was due to go to her exam classes.
