Eva moved her lips closer to his. His touch sparked a feeling in her that she had not felt with any other men before.
He paused almost embarrassed to talk.
Carter: I've never been with a woman before.
Eva: What?
Carter: I've never BEEN with a woman before. I just never had a relationship get that far. Carter: I'm so sorry.
Eva: Don't be. I can understand.
Carter: I just don't want to ruin this moment. It's just that I thought something like this would be for my wife.
Eva smiled at him. Eva raised up from the bed.
Eva: It's alright.
Carter: Are you sure?
Eva smiled again at him.
Eva: I'm sure. Carter: Can I just hold you tonight?
Eva: I think that would be wonderful.
They slept while holding each other in the night. Weeks later, Evan and Isis ate dinner at the Cafe:
Evan: I'm telling you Isis. Dad was right, it was selfish of me to want to bring Eva back. I should have went with my first brain and ask Lucy Newcomer. She's a nice girl. A little hard on the eyes but nice. Isis: Come on Evan. I think your sister has changed a great deal in the last months she's been here. I thought about how you and your father described her and I don't see it now. And I know she really likes him.
Evan grumbled. Isis: Remember when we all took Tina to the park. I could tell the way she looked at him. She wasn't pretending. And I can tell when a woman is faking it.
Evan: I still say this was a bad idea. Isis: Because of the money sent by Peter when Carter first arrived to town, the family has been able to pay bills and buy a few personal items here and there. You've been less stressed about work and been able to spend more time with Tina and me. Evan: No, no. We've been selfish and foolish. Selfish to use someone so we can get ahead in life and foolish to think this would work. My sister has plans up her sleeve. I just know it.
Isis: Our first thoughts may have been selfish but I do think some good is coming out of it. Carter is happy, Eva is happy. What could go wrong? Evan looked down at his plate. He continued to play with his food. When he didn't answer, Isis looked up from her meal.
Isis: Look, don't worry about your father. He will stop being stubborn sooner or later. We are at a good place right now. Bills are paid, we aren't arguing over money, your sister is back home. Life is good. Evan: Yeah but for how long. Jack was busy reading his paper in the living room. He didn't notice the sound of Eva's footsteps as she entered the room.
Eva: Papa?
He stiffened his position when she spoke. He held on closely to the paper to cover his face and make sure that he was not looking at her. Eva: I didn't mean to disturb you. I just wanted to tell you that......well....it's been nice being home again. I know you may not believe it but it's made a good impression on me to be back home with you and Evan.
He still did not respond. Eva: I've been spending lots of time with Tina as well. She get's into everything. I don't see how Evan and Isis does it with her. She's so full of energy. I took her to the Pet shop the other day on the way home and she tried to buy the whole store with $3. She probably could have too. It reminded me of the many times you took me there when I was little. It's where we bought Max. Good ole' Max. His eyes softened behind the newspaper. He started to lower it and then suddenly lifted it back up to turn to the next page.
Eva: Well here I am bothering you again. I just wanted to say......thank you Papa. She slowly walked out the living room. He heard her footsteps walk up the stairs and waited to here the door close before putting down his paper. He looked down at his hands. He had realized he was clinching them tight. The next day Carter picked up Eva from her home. By this time he had moved out of his studio apartment into a nice house for himself. He liked his job as a family practitioner and enjoyed the small town of Berryville. Most importantly he enjoyed being with Eva. She couldn't understand how much she affected him, impacted him. He was going to keep his promise to her and take care of her. There was something about Eva. She was strong yet sensitive. She always kept her walls up with him but would slowly open up to him on her life after living in Berryville.
They pulled up to a house across town. It was at the house that the owners allowed the couple to come in. They showed them to a side of the room where there was a box of kittens in there. She picked one up and was instantly in love. Eva: This would be great for Tina. I'm not much of a cat lover but she is and she is going to love this.
It was there again that he saw that warmth that was in her. Eva and Carter walked into the living room. They called to Tina who came running down the stairs. The little girl took a look at the kitten.
Tina: For me?
Eva: Yep. She's all yours. Tina gently took the kitten from Eva. Her eyes beaming with delight.
Carter: What are you going to name her.
Tina: Al
Eva: Al?
Tina: I always liked that name.
The little girl squealed as she played with her new pet. Jack entered the room just as she was laughing and giggling while holding her kitten.
Jack: What's all the noise about? Tina what are you doing with that rat?
Tina: It's not a rat Grandpa. It's Al my new pet. Auntie Eva and Uncle Carter bought it for me.
Carter and Eva both looked at each other. Eva was about to correct her niece but decided not to. She looked so happy with Al. Jack left out the living room. Tina walked up to Carter.
Tina: Thanks Uncle Carter, thanks Auntie Eva. This is the best gift ever.
She ran upstairs to her room to continue playing with her new pet. As the two sat on the couch Carter began to think.
What do you think about your niece calling me uncle?
Eva: What do you mean?
Carter: Tina....she called me Uncle Carter.
Eva: She's a little girl. Carter: Yeah but it's still nice that she thought of me as part of the family don't you think?
Eva was about to say something but caught herself in her words. She just nodded her head. Carter: I'm feeling good right now. Right here, right now. It's like everything is working about for me. I love my career, I love this town, and I love......
He paused before he could finish his sentence.
Eva: What?
She was holding on to his last words
Carter: I love you
Eva's heart jumped.
Eva: Really?
Carter: Really. It was the first time someone had told her that. Not since she was young and in her father's arms did she ever feel so warm and secure of herself. She wanted to say something. She wanted to open up more, instead she laid her head on his shoulder. The next weeks had gone by just as fast. The two of them spent almost everyday together.
Carter: You are so beautiful.
Eva: Stop it.
Carter: You are beautiful, inside and out. You do something to me Eva. I haven't figured out what it is. But you do. I've been blessed to be with you. She looked at him. His smile so welcoming. She wanted to cry but fought back the tears. She wrapped her arms under his arms and held tightly. He kissed her forehead.
Eva: This is nice. The sun was setting when Eva arrived at the Berryville Garden. The two were growing close with each day together. Earlier that day she had received a letter from Carter to meet him there. He was late. He had never been late to a date and she was beginning to get worried and confused. She was just about to give up when he came walking from behind.
Eva: There you are. It's not like you to be late. Is everything alright?
Carter seemed a little nervous. Almost pale.
Carter: No, I mean, yes. Everything is fine. I just had some things to do and was running late. She touched his face and looked into his eyes.
Eva: Are you sure. You are not looking yourself tonight. Maybe we should cancel the date so you can get well. Carter: NO!
His voice was loud and nearly frightened her.
Carter: Sorry, I just, wait....just wait a minute. He knelt down on one knee. Eva was shocked at his gesture.
Carter: Eva, meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to me. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you, that I don't want to be with you. You have changed my heart so much and I don't want to spend another moment without you. Now I know we haven't been dating for long, but I don't want to wait any longer. Carter: Will you be my wife?
Eva placed her hands over her mouth.

What a cliffhanger! Eva's answer is not that stock. I think she loves him as well, but she couldn't say the words. Will her past, her hurt and her guit keep her from giving him the answer he is hoping for? Can't wait for the next chapter.
