Dramatically detailed and lustfully lengthy. It's here for your reading pleasure. :) Let's refresh our memories a bit, shall we?
Deacon discovered Renee and Danny didn't actually sleep together the night she stayed in his dorm.
Talia still strongly insists on keeping her and Danny's relationship a secret.
Cyd broke up with Melissa after she kept obsessing over Danny.
With Fred gone, Renee and Deacon had been spending a lot more time together. Renee and Deacon had numerous lustful encounters... the restaurant, the common room, the pub. Renee was distracted from thinking of Fred until she ran into Professor Able Cobert in the school's historical research department and later realized he was hiding something that she thought belonged to Fred... the king's prized possession. So Deacon helped her steal it, with Danny tagging along but refusing to take part. The big formal came up. Deacon wrote a song for Renee and Roman sang it so he could dance with her. But when he went to find her, she was in the arms of Fred who had surprisrisingly returned from his journey with a new appearance. Deacon was angrily pacing his dorm room, still dressed in his black suit. He fiddled with his tie, his hands shaking with fury as he struggled to undo it. Danny was slouched in a chair in front of their small television, retiring for the night in a pair of his faded university sweatpants. Blaine was passed out on the couch, doped up on the secretly spiked punch from the formal earlier that evening. "I can't believe this," Deacon ranted, as he threw his tie at the wall, "Who the hell does he think he is? He had his hands all over her."
"I tried to warn you, Deac," Danny said, uncomforting, "I told you Renee was still into Fred. You got your hopes up too quick."
"But we were just together last night," Deacon responded, now pulling his belt harshly from his waist band, "What the hell happened? It was going so good." He growled desperately, clenching his fists tightly around his belt as he remembered their evening embrace in the common room, "God, it was sooo good!" Danny rubbed his forehead, closing his eyes in exhaustion, "I hate to say I told you so-"
"Then quit saying it!" Deacon shouted, whipping his belt over his desk chair, "And where the hell were you anyway? You were supposed to be her date and you left early. Nobody knew where you went! You left her with that son of a-"
"Hey, don't blame this on me," Danny said, "Renee told me she just wanted to be alone for a while. I did tell her I was going to leave. It was just a long night what with all the trespassing, robbery and what-not." Danny rolled his eyes. "Which, by the way," he added, "I am going to claim I know nothing about when the police come looking for you." "Don't change the subject," Deacon said as he fumbled with his jacket, trying to take it off. "What the bloody hell..." he cursed as the package and papers Renee asked him hang on to tumbled out of his coat and onto the floor. Deacon was silent for a moment as he picked them up an examined them. "I should just burn these," he mumbled sourly.
"That's not a bad idea," Danny said, seriously, "Get rid of the evidence."
Deacon just rolled his eyes as he tossed the package carelessly under his bed. Fred and Renee were stumbling up the stairwell to his apartment, not taking their hands off of each other. When they reached his door, her back slammed against it, his lips pressing against hers as he struggled to recover the keys from his pants pocket. Renee laughed, as she put her hand in his other pocket and quickly pulled out the keys, dangling them playfully in front of his eyes. He grabbed them with a smirk, and quickly began fiddling for the right key beneath the dim light in the hallway.
"Hurry up," Renee said anxiously, as she ruffled her hand through his naturally messy hair. Fred laughed, "I'm trying to-" he suddenly paused and stood completely still, looking alarmed. "Did you hear that?" he whispered.
"Hear what?" Renee asked, unsure.
"Shhh!" he put his finger to his lips as he pressed his ear against the door, "It sounds like someone's in the apartment."
"You're just being paranoid," Renee responded, still caught up in heat of the past few moments, as she gently kissed his neck, "Now hurry up and get us inside." "Hang on," Fred said. He bent down, reaching into his shoe, and pulled out what appeared to be a small pocket knife. He flipped it open, revealing a long, sharp blade.
"Fred, what are you doing?" Renee asked him, shocked, "Why do you have that?"
"Shhh," Fred just said again. "Go over there," he mouthed.
Renee shook her head in refusal, "You're acting really strange. What's going on?"
Fred gently slid the key into the lock and slowly turned the knob. He tapped the door open just a crack and peered inside. It was completely dark; completely dark and empty.
He straightened up and let out a breath, closing his knife and putting it back into his shoe. Renee huffed as Fred continued opening the door, "See, I told you you're just being-" "AHHH!" a dark figure suddenly jumped in front of the door; a man holding an unplugged lamp above his head, prepared to smash it down on Fred.
"STOP!" Renee suddenly yelled.
The man lowered the lamp at the sound of Renee's voice and peered over Fred's shoulder at her. He unexpectedly laughed and said, "Renee?" "Roman, you are such an idiot!" Renee yelled as soon as she was sure it was indeed her twin brother, "What the hell are you doing here? You scared us half to death!"
"I scared you?" Roman laughed. He wiped his forehead while he put the lamp back on the end table by the sofa, "You guys scared the crap out of me! I thought someone was breaking in. When did you get back, Fred?" "Earlier tonight," Fred answered, still catching his breath.
"Ah, so that would be why your utilities are back on," Roman nodded in realization, "And why your dog's back."
"Duh," Renee rolled her eyes.
"Well, sorry. Come on in," Roman said as he held out his hand to welcome them into the apartment. "Gee, thanks," Fred said rolling his eyes as he strolled passed Roman into his own home. He looked around at the apartment and noticed that some of Roman's clothes and his shoes were scattered on the floor. Roman stood shirtless, drinking a cup of water, looking comfortable as if he were in his own home. Fred asked, "Rome, have you been staying here or something while I've been gone?"
Roman scratched the back of his head, "Well, I still had your key that you gave me when I lived here and I didn't think it would be a problem since nobody else was here. I only stayed some nights when I wasn't bunking up with Deacon in his dorm." "Well, that's okay," Fred said as he kneeled down to pet Fieval who came to greet his master. Fred looked at Roman cautiously and then stammered, "But Renee and I were kind of, er... planning to spend tonight... um... alone. So..."
Just then, they heard the toilet flush from beyond Fred's bathroom door. Renee gasped, afraid that someone unwelcome had really been in the apartment. But then, she lost her breath completely when she saw who actually came out.
Roman looked ashamed as he attempted to introduce the dark haired girl who just exited the rest room, "I guess I sort of had the same plans you guys did. Renee, Fred... this is-" "Tatum?!" Renee and Fred both said at the same time, shocked.
Tatum stood there, with her hand propped pompously on her hip, and a mischievous smirk that immediately irritated Renee. It was almost as if she had planned this moment exactly and was proudly watching her scheme unfold.
"Oh you know each other already?" Roman smiled widely, "That's great!" "No," Fred mumbled to Roman as they watched Renee approach her, "It's not good at all."
"What are you playing at?" Renee yelled in Tatum's face, "Why are you so set on being out to get me? I did nothing to you! It's not my fault Danny broke up with you! It's not my fault Deacon and Fred rejected you! Get over it already, Tatum! And leave my family alone!"
"W-what?" Roman stuttered in the background. "For your information," Tatum said snobbishly, "Roman and I just happened to meet at the dance tonight. I hadn't the slightest idea that he was your brother."
Renee found that hard to believe. Tatum hadn't acted surprised at all to see her. "I think you knew perfectly well who he was," Renee replied, still shouting, "I know how your mind works!" Renee turned to Roman, "She's nothing but trouble, Rome! Trust me." Renee faced Tatum once again, fury shooting from her gaze, "Don't you dare put a hand- a single finger- on my brother!" "What are you saying, Renee?" Roman chimed in, confused, "That she only wants me to get back at you?" Roman shook his head in disbelief, feeling embarrassed and angry, "That can't be true." He turned to Tatum, a naive hope in his eyes, "Is that true, Tat?"
"Of course not," Tatum grinned evilly at Renee, and then forced a provoking laugh, "And Renee? I have already put more than just my hands on your brother." "You...!" Renee screamed, cursing, and tore towards Tatum. Tatum backed away, appearing amused as Fred ran over to grab Renee before she could do anything. Renee struggled as Fred turned her to face him. He hugged her, to calm her down, and she quickly gave in to his comforting embrace.
"Let's get out of here, Roman," Tatum strutted toward him and the door, "Obviously, somebody has something against me for some silly, unknown reason. It must be jealousy." Tatum grabbed her jacket, flinging it over her shoulder and prompted for Roman to follow her into the stairwell, "Come on." Roman glanced for a moment at Renee whose face was still buried in Fred's chest. He watched Fred gently stroke her hair. Maybe Tatum was right, he thought. Maybe Renee was just having a fit of jealousy. Roman shrugged. Whatever the reason, she didn't appear to need him to stick around for comfort. She had someone else to protect her now. "Let's go!" Tatum's voice echoed from the hallway into the room and Roman obeyed, quietly shutting the door behind him. Fred put his arm around Renee and guided her to the couch. She sunk into the cushions, lying on her back in a depressed slump. Fred quietly apprached her, unsure of what exactly to say.
"I shouldn't have let him leave with her," Renee broke the silence, "I never thought he would. He always trusts me." "Renee," Fred responded propping his leg up on the sofa, "You guys are going to have to start living separate lives sooner or later. I think it's about time you stop depending on each other to screen every decision." Fred smiled, "He'll be fine. He's a big boy."
"She'll crush him," Renee said, sitting up into a slouch, her head hanging low, "It's just another one of her crazy schemes. She's just so... ugh!"
"Hey," Fred said, "Let's stop talking about that witch. Isn't there something we were doing before we were so strangely interrupted?"
Renee let out a shy smile. Fred moved into her, putting his hand on her chin and slowly leaning in to kiss her. His lips gently brushed against hers, enticing her, as he gently lowered her into the soft cushions. She had forgotten the way his lips had felt, the gentle way he touched her and the rush she got when he softly stroked her cheek with his thumb as he stared into her eyes. He was so gentle, so different than how rough, how wild it was with... with Deacon. She suddenly cleared her throat and turned her head away. "What's wrong?" Fred asked her, releasing her from the pressure of his body.
"Well," Renee said, appearing awkwardly uncomfortable as she sat up, "We should probably talk first before... you know... anything, um... big... happens." "Like about where this going?" Fred said, expectantly, "And what you and I are exactly?"
"Yea," Renee nodded, "Yea and I have to tell you-"
"You know, Renee," Fred interrupted her, "I was stupid before not to take our relationship for what it really was. I think you know now how much I care about you... and I hope you feel the same way about me." He sighed, "It's just my quest seemed to need to be finished before I could, you know, completely focus on something else." He smiled, "But when I was gone, I found myself thinking about you every minute of every day. And everything I did, I wanted you to be there. I needed you to be there." "Oh, Fred," Renee replied, her expression dazed, not sure how exactly to react, "I-I wasn't sure how you felt. I mean, you did leave me, after all, without saying good-bye. And you told me that you couldn't have a relationship with me and you never said when, or even if, you'd be back. You left me... without hope for anything to ever come of us." Renee shifted in her seat, staring into her lap. Strong memories of her numerous nights with Deacon over the passed months flooded her mind. 'Now,' she thought. She should tell him about her and Deacon now. "Fred, when you were gone," she started, "I didn't think-"
"I can't get back the time we lost," Fred said, cutting her off, "And I don't want to lose anymore. Let's forget that lost time, put it in the past, and move on together. I don't expect some sudden huge commitment from you. We can take this slow." Renee shrugged, doubtfully, "You really think we can so easily just put it behind us? You don't even know what I've-"
"Renee, I'm so sorry," Fred replied sincerely, "I will tell you I'm sorry for the rest of my life for leaving you without saying good-bye; for leaving you without a promise. But I promise you now that I won't keep any of me from you anymore as long as I live."
"So you'll tell me where the heck you've been?" Renee responded, still very curious about Fred's adventure and eager to tell him what she had discovered, "And you'll tell me everything you've found? And why the hell you cut that beautiful head of hair?" He laughed. "I'll tell you everything," he said, "But it's going to take a while. So, before we get into all of that..." He paused, not finishing his sentence. "Three times, Renee," he suddenly said. Fred put his arm around her and spoke softly in her ear, "In those many months that we had spent every single day together, only three of them had I the courage to kiss you. Those three moments vividly took over my daydreams the entire time I was away from you. I don't want them to be just daydreams anymore."
"But, Fred..." Renee trailed off. His warm breath sent satisfying shivers through her as she closed her eyes. She wasn't used to Fred being so forward. Fred kissed her ear, weakening her body. He was inexperienced, but somehow he knew just what to do to make her crave for more of him. Perhaps simply everything he did met her desires just because he was Fred.
He moved his lips down Renee's neck and she was swiftly defeated. She finally gave in, her body melting into the cushions, as he sunk perfectly into her. Talia had expected to spend the night with Danny after the formal. But after ignoring several calls on her cell phone from Melissa, she finally answered and was given the news of her best friends' break-up.
She had spent all night in their dorm room listening to Melissa complain about Cyd. Talia logged online in hopes that she would catch Danny and be able to talk to him, but she didn't know he was busily listening to his best friend's rants as well. "Why are you always on the computer?" Melissa scoffed peeking over Talia's shoulder, "Who the heck are you waiting to talk to on there anyway? Shouldn't we be out doing something fun? We're two single chicks and let's face it; we're not bad at all to look at!"
"Aren't you tired?" Talia replied, "I think you just need to relax. You and Cyd just broke up. I don't think going clubbing is going to take the pain away."
"I just need like a rebound or something," Melissa said, "Just some meaningless fling to get over this."
"I really don't think that's the best idea," Talia said, "You and Cyd never even had sex. How is doing it with some random person going to help you get over it?" "Well, I won't pick a random person then," Melissa smiled, "I'll ask Danny out."
"What?!" Talia choked on her enormous gasp and went into a coughing fit.
"Why are you so surprised?" Melissa laughed, "You saw through me the whole time; you know I think he's the hottest thing on the planet. That's pretty much the reason Cyd broke it off with me."
Talia stuttered, "But he... you don't... that's just not a good idea, Mel."
"Why not?" Melissa said determined, "He's not engaged anymore. He's on the market. I haven't seen any other chicks around him except for that Renee girl." "Renee," Talia suddenly spurted out a lie, "He's dating Renee."
"What?" Melissa looked at her, surprised, "But I thought you said they were just friends."
"Yea well," Talia tried to think quickly, "Apparently I was wrong. They're together as together can be!" Talia shrugged nervously.
"You're kidding me," Melissa sighed, "I should've broke up with Cyd sooner when Danny was still available. He's probably just with that chick for the shag anyway. It won't last."
"They're actually really close," Talia said, truthfully, "They've been really good friends since they were kids." "How do you know?" Melissa looked at her questioningly.
"Oh," Talia stammered, "Uh, Renee told me a while ago when we were on the island." Talia's tone suddenly turned bitter, "She's actually who he lost his virginity to. She's the only one he's ever slept with."
"Oh really?" Melissa said, interested, "Here I thought he was a prude." She mused, "I had many different plans in my head to corrupt him. Looks like can be more easily seduced than I had thought."
"Well, you better put those ideas on the back burner again," Talia said convincingly, "Because he's with Renee." She sighed. "Yep. It's always been Danny and Renee," she said bitterly almost as if she were afraid the words she spoke might actually be true. Although it felt timeless, Renee and Fred had been lost for almost an hour in each other on the sofa until she suddenly pulled away.
"What's wrong?" Fred asked her, mildly alarmed as she grabbed her stomach.
"I'm okay," Renee said, "I just have a stomachache. I missed dinner and I skipped lunch."
"Well, I can fix that," Fred smiled, kissed her on the forehead and walked into the kitchen. Renee slowly stood up and followed him, taking a seat at the small table while Fred put a pot of soup on the stove. The smell of chicken broth wafted through the air and already began to settle her belly a little. She had missed Fred's immaculate cooking skills. Either he was a brilliant chef, or it was so good just because it was Fred who made it for her. He sat down across from her and handed her a mug of milk which he knew was her drink of choice, especially when she had an upset stomach. He sighed happily, just staring at her.
"So now are you going to tell me where you've been?" Renee questioned him.
Fred nodded. "Okay," he said as he tried to remember the events of his passed month. "I did go to Veronaville," Fred explained, "Coincidentally the address of that lady who had the ancient artifact turned out to be a bookstore/cafe I used to frequent when I was a kid. The woman who owns it actually lived across the street from me when I was in one of my foster homes. Her name's Lyddie. She's real nice." "Anyway," Fred continued, "When I asked her about the artifact you had read about, she told me she had already sold it. It turned out that someone else had already come and offered a pretty penny for the artifact. Some young looking girl, she said, maybe a little older than me. She couldn't really remember what she looked like as the book shop was always so busy. The antique was just some kind of small statue or sculpture of a lion. It wasn't the royal crest; just a fancy little immitation trinket. It wasn't what what I was looking for." "So then I just decided to stay in a small hotel right next to the store and I ended up spending most of my time in the book shop," Fred said, "I did a lot more deciphering of the map in my room at night. And I researched a lot in the shop during the day about what the king's prized posession might be." Fred seemed lost in searching his memory, "Something really weird happened one day."
"What's that?" Renee asked him curiously. "When I was there one day," he continued, "Just drinking coffee, researching some books, and making notes... a man came in. He was a large man who looked like he had just rolled down from the mountains. You know, scruffy brown hair and an unshaven beard. He entered the shop and slammed the door real loud behind him like he wanted everybody to know he was there or something... like he wanted people to be afraid. He stomped- not walked- stomped through the store to Lyddie's counter. Everyone was staring at him."
"Who was he?" Renee asked. "Lyddie called him Grizz," Fred answered her, "I'm not sure if that was really his name or not; I doubt it is; who in their right mind would name their child Grizz?" Renee laughed. "Anyway," Fred continued, "He started questioning her about the artifact and accusing her of hiding it from him when she told him she had already sold it. He demanded to know who the girl was who bought it but Lyddie told him she didn't know, and that was the truth."
"Who was this Grizz and what did he want with the artifact?" Renee asked, listening intently. "Lyddie later told me that he's apart of a group that call themselves the Silver Seekers," Fred continued to explain, "I guess they are basically treasure hunters. They've apparently been searching for the royal family's lost treasure for years."
"He must have thought the lion trinket was from the royal family too," Renee pointed out, feeling a little less stupid for sending Fred on a wild goose chase in Veronaville. Fred nodded. "Lyddie said the Silver Seekers' leader is a man they call Sly," Fred told her, "She said she's never met the guy but she's heard nobody really knows his real identity. He thinks the treasure rightfully belongs to him. Apparently, Sly is the son of one of the red knights who he thinks was entitled to all of the king's riches because this red knight was meant to marry the princess before Tobias supposedly kidnapped her and the treasure. I'll give you one guess to who that red knight was." "Peter!" Renee said, her mouth dropping open, "The one who was meant to marry the princess... I mean your grandmother, wow... before she ran away with Tobias! So Sly is Peter's son!?"
"Exactly," Fred smiled, enjoying Renee's enthusiasm. He knew she would catch on right away. "Well, Sly and the group just think that Tobias kidnapped the princess for the treasure and he's the one who killed the king. They have no idea that the princess left willingly and it was actually Tobias's son Theo who killed the king out of revenge. Lyddie also had no idea that princess Maraya and Tobias had children who inherited the treasure and so she certainly didn't know they had a grandchild either."
"You didn't tell her it was you, did you?" Renee questioned him, alarmed, "You didn't mention you were Vince's son, right? What if she blabs it to the Seekers? What if they find out about the map? You didn't tell her about that, did you?" "No," Fred laughed, "Give me some credit, here. I didn't tell her it was me. I didn't even tell her they had a grandchild. I did tell her that I knew they had two sons but that's all. When she asked me how I knew, I just told her I read it somewhere credible. I don't think she believed me anyway though." Renee flashed him a teasing smile, "Now, is there a reason you cut your hair?"
"You're going to think I'm just being paranoid again," Fred scratched the back of his neck as he admitted, "But during the end of my stay there I felt like somebody was following me; like everywhere I went somebody was watching me." "Grizz?" Renee suggested, a little worried, "Maybe he heard you talking to Lyddie or Lyddie told him something about you wanting the trinket now he thinks you know something about the treasure."
"He would be a bit hard to miss if he were following me," Fred replied, "He's a pretty huge guy; not easy to hide. Plus you could probably smell him from a mile away." Renee laughed, spitting a mouthful of milk back into her mug. Fred smiled as he continued, "And I don't think Lyddie would tell him anything either... she doesn't like him much and I trust her. But it could have been another Silver Seeker maybe. I don't know."
"Was there anyone else in the bookstore who you noticed might have overheard you talking?" Renee asked him, "Or may have been suspicious of you? Like someone who was there a lot?" Fred tried to remember. "I didn't really pay much attention to the people," Fred said, "Except Grizz but that's because he made sure everybody did. The shop was just always so busy; people were always in and out quickly grabbing coffee or books. Teenagers would come in after school and be a bit distracting." Fred shrugged, "Who knows. Maybe I really am just being paranoid."
"Wow," Renee said, overwhelmed, "This is so much bigger than I thought it was. I wonder if anyone else is after the treasure."
Fred shrugged, "I don't know. It was hard to concentrate being there without you. You help me focus and honestly, you have figured out everything so far better than I have. I didn't even come close to finding the king's prized possession."
Renee tried to interrupt Fred and let him know of her discoveries, but he was on a roll and couldn't be stopped. Fred recited from memory the poem that Vince had left him as a clue,
"Take with you the prized posession
baring the crest of the roaring brave.
The old king's secret obsession
sending the lesser to the grave." "Now at first I thought that his obsession might have been money," Fred was talking fast, "Like maybe there was some royal crested gold somewhere that could be the key to whatever lies in the castle ruins. But then the second part of the poem didn't make sense. 'Sending the lesser to the grave?' Doesn't that almost sound it means killing people?"
Fred didn't give Renee time to answer but she nodded in agreement, smiling. Fred continued without taking a breath, "So then I thought the king ordered the pirates to be killed and even his own daughter. What if he had been killing other people too, like poor people not of his class, and covering it up so nobody knew about it? Remember how Cobert said that he wanted to rid the world of poverty and thieves? Maybe he killed them! That makes sense, right? So then I thought maybe it was a weapon."
Fred finally breathed and let out a strong sigh, "I just don't know how or where to find it." Renee smiled. "I already did," she said.
"What?" Fred said, looking at her, completely shocked, "Why didn't you tell me before?"
"I tried to many times tonight," Renee explained, "But you kept interrupting me. You had other... things... on your mind."
Fred laughed. "Well what is it?" he asked excitedly, "Where is it? How do we get it?"
"I already did, Fred," Renee told him, proudly smiling at his surprised look, "I came to the same conclusion as you about it being a weapon. And remember when we went to Professor Cobert's house and he had that dagger lying out that I went to look at and he quick put it away?" Fred nodded. "Well," she continued, "I remembered seeing a faded crest on it... it turns out that it was in fact the lion, royal crest. Strangely, Cobert brought it to the school to store in the historical research department. I saw him one day, he asked about you, and I noticed the package in his hand looked the same as the one he had put the dagger in. I just had a feeling that what we needed was that dagger. It all fits; a weapon is the king's prized posession. I wonder if Cobert knew what it really was? that it was a key to somewhere in the castle ruins."
"Well how did you get him to give it to you?" Fred asked, animatedly.
"He didn?t actually give it to me," Renee looked down, feeling a bit ashamed, "We kind of stole it."
Fred's eyes shot wide open, "Stole it? How on earth did you get passed the school's security system?" He paused, thinking over what she had just told him. "And who is 'we'?" he asked, "You said 'we' stole it." "Well," Renee hesitated, taking a large gulp of her milk, and then figured she might as well just be out with it, "Deacon helped me break in." She noticed Fred's expression furrow but she continued, "You know, he's good at that stuff. It was actually today right before the formal. Danny was there too but he was just tagging along. Neither of them knew what it really was or why I wanted it. Danny acted suspicious and prodded a bit but I didn't tell them about anything."
Fred's expression was verging on upset but he remained calm as he asked, "Well, where is it now?"
"Oh," Renee looked down into her mug, swirling its contents, "Um, well... Deacon kind of still has it."
"What?" Fred said, shocked.
"I didn't have time to get it from him," she explained, "We went straight to the dance. I'll get it from him first thing tomorrow." "Deacon?" Fred asked, "Of all people, why Deacon?"
"Actually," Renee started to say, "He's my friend. And I've been wanting to tell you that he and I might have actually kinda-"
"Your friend?" Fred repeated, not angry, just surprised, "After what he did to you? And after what he did to Danny? You both forgave him way too easily."
"We all make mistakes, Fred," Renee said quietly as some of her own mistakes came to mind, "He actually seems to be starting to change for the better."
"Well, whatever," Fred shrugged it off, "As long as you can get it back from him first thing tomorrow. Then we can go to the castle ruins next week... if you still want to come that is." Even though it was quite overwhelming and unexpected, she couldn't pass up the opportunity for an adventure. This was what she wanted from the beginning; she wanted to be a part of this... a part of Fred's life. "I'm in," she said happily, "Of course I'm in."
"Well, you guys have two weeks of spring break now," Fred reminded her, "So you wouldn't miss any school work." Fred took her hand and smiled, "I'd love for you to take the journey with me this time."
"Yea," Renee smiled as he caressed her hand in his, "It's what I've been waiting for." The whole next day most the of students were busy packing their things to get ready to go home for spring break.
On every other Saturday afternoon, Talia would usually be spending it with Danny. But since Melissa and Cyd broke up the night before, Talia found herself sitting in the common room early that morning listening to Melissa rant once again.
"I can't believe Cyd broke up with me right after Danny got a girlfriend," Melissa complained, "Stupid Cyd. Are you sure Danny is seeing that Renee girl? Because I saw her chatting pretty closely with that red headed boy over there earlier this morning. He doesn't look familiar. Who is he anyway?"
"Oh," Talia tried to think up another lie, "That's just her um, her um... cousin."
"She kisses her cousins?" Melissa shivered, "That's gross."
"I guess," Talia shrugged, thinking how stupid of a lie that was knowing that Melissa would probably witness them kissing on more than one occasion. Talia hadn't known Fred was back. This could really make a mess of her lie. "Oh hey," Melissa suddenly had a thought, "You remember that lead singer in that band at the formal last night?" Talia nodded. Of course she knew Roman, Renee's twin brother. "Well," Melissa continued, "Apparently Tatum took him home last night... and I guess she had her way with him." Talia's jaw dropped. "Yea," Melissa raised her eyebrows, "And I saw them holding hands in the cafeteria this morning looking all... official."
"No way!" Talia responded surprised, "Oh man, is he in for it or what? Roman has no clue what he's getting himself into. He should start shutting her out now while he still has a chance!"
"Speaking of shutting people out," Melissa said, "That same Phillip guy called like ten times again this morning while you were in the shower. You know, that guy who your parents introduced you to when I was at your house last summer and you guys went on some date or whatever. You're going to have to call him back one of these days. You can't avoid him forever." "Hey," Talia quickly changed the subject which was becoming a strange habit as of late, "Who is that girl with Deacon?"
Melissa looked over to another part of the common room and saw Deacon chatting up a tall, tan bleached-blonde girl. They were pretty close and she was giggling flirtatiously at something he had just said.
"Oh," Melissa said as she recognized her, "That's Jane something-or-other. She's on the dance team with me. Bit of a floozy. I guess she's Deacon's new flavor of the week." "Crap," Melissa suddenly exclaimed, sitting up straight and fixing her hair, "Here comes Danny." Melissa whispered, "Oh and look who he's with. I guess you were right."
Talia peered over as Renee and Danny were coming around the corner to the common room. They were whispering and laughing. He had his hand on her back, leading her into the room. It bothered Talia but she made sure not to let her emotions show. Danny and Renee rounded the corner into the common room. Danny was talking to her about some last minute assignments he had to get done but Renee didn't hear him... actually, she just wasn't listening. Her eyes immediately shot over to Deacon who was chatting up some freshman girl which seemed to immediately turn her mood sour.
Renee eyed up Deacon. He was dressed in a thin t-shirt and khaki shorts that hung low on his hips. Their waste band was below the one of his bright green boxers that stood out horribly beneath his white t-shirt. Those stupid boxers with the pool balls on them. Renee remembered them well.
There was no denying that Deacon was good looking. And she knew that's probably all the girl wanted him for; his good looks, his irresistible charm, the confident air that always surrounded him. It was all too intoxicating and Renee didn't want to admit that she always found herself succumbing to it. "I jumped from the roof and did a belly flop into Danny's pool," Renee heard Deacon say as he smiled smugly, the platinum blonde girl hitting his shoulder playfully, giggling flirtatiously. Renee watched in disgust. "Yea I really did," Deacon responded to her rhetorical inquire "Really?". Deacon smiled with that stupid perfect smile, "It hurt like a bitch though. There's still a mark on my chest. Want to see?"
Deacon stood up and lifted his thin cotton t-shirt to the top of his chest, revealing his shapely stomach to the girl. Renee couldn't look away. The girl touched his bare skin and howled with a distinctive giggle. She fussed over his silly little red mark, rubbing it and spewing her concern.
Renee thought she was going to be sick. She tried to suppress the jealous pang that fuelled her anger and tempted her to rush over and slap him upside the head. Why was she feeling so enraged? This was ridiculous.
"Are you even listening to me?" Danny said, abruptly interrupting Renee's thoughts, "I asked you if you were going to take Environmental Science next semester!"
"Oh," Renee looked away from Deacon and focused her attention back on Danny as they made their way over to another corner of the common room where Priya, Blaine and Fred were waiting for them. "Yea I am," she finally answered him.
"Good," Danny responded, "We can sign up for the class then at the same time so we'll be in it together." Renee just nodded, trying not to look back in Deacon's direction. "Hey there," Fred greeted Renee as she sat down on one of the couches next to him. He seemed happier than she had ever seen him, "We were just talking about spring break. I told them we're taking a trip into the mountains." Fred seemed to be warning her of his cover-up of where they were really going.
"Blaine and I are going to the beach," Priya said. Renee looked at her with a surprised expression. Why hadn't Priya told her that earlier? It occurred to Renee that she hadn't told Priya where she was going either. It suddenly hit her that perhaps her and Priya's obvious differences were finally starting to slowly drift them apart.
Renee sighed away these thoughts as Priya was rambling on about some museum they were to visit at the beach. Fred appeared interested, or at least he was pretending to be interested. But to Renee, Priya's words were just a bunch of "blahs" as she couldn't help but gaze over at the horrible distraction that was Deacon. Renee continued to watch him with an unintentional scowled expression as he lulled the girl with his enticing charm, making her swoon with no effort.
Then they hit Renee. Those eyes. Those familiar grey eyes met hers from across the room and they widened when they focused on her, surprised at the presence of their curious onlooker. He hadn't seen her come in the room. Renee just stared into his eyes with no obvious expression.
Deacon suddenly looked away from her and peered down at his bare chest. He fumbled with his shirt and pulled it snugly back down to his waste to cover his exposed skin. The silly girl tried to slide the cloth back up but Deacon awkwardly pushed her hand away. He shifted his gaze and met Renee's once again. He looked utterly uncomfortable. Renee's lips curled upward, teasing him with a sly smirk.
She knew she had a strange power over him but it wasn't until now she realized exactly how much. It was kind of amusing, watching him squirm. Renee couldn't hear what he was saying, but Deacon got up and walked away, leaving the common room.
"Wait," The girl stood up, tripping over her own feet, and then preceeded to follow him, "What do you mean you have homework? It's spring break!"
They disappeared behind the corner and Renee couldn't help but wonder what was going on beyond it. Deacon and homework? That didn't sound right. Was that just an excuse? For what? Was that girl touching him again? Was she going to kiss him? Renee growled. Why did she even care?
Renee suddenly found herself making an excuse to realease herself from the group and investigate the situtation. "Fred," she said, "I have to go get that thing from Deacon real quick that I told you about, remember?"
Fred nodded.
Danny watched her suspiciously as she quickly strode away. He knew what 'thing' she was referring to. So she had told Fred about the package? Danny couldn't help but continue to wonder what that was all about and why Renee was so intent on hiding it from him. Just as Renee was about to round the corner, Deacon popped out and blocked her way. "I knew you would follow me," he said with a confident smirk.
"I was not following you," Renee blurted out with an unpleasant ring to her tone. She wasn't doing it intentionally, but she was scowling, piercing him with her tempered gaze, still strangely affected by what she had just witnessed.
"I see dear Fred is back," if he was at all angry, he wasn't showing it. He kept his cool, cocky tone as he continued, "I saw you guys on the patio at the dance last night, well, you know... swapping spit."
"Why do you say that like I should feel guilty about it?" Renee questioned him, "As if I did something wrong?" Renee scoffed. "And like you are so innocent," she said sarcastically, "Like you weren't just over there publicly displaying your affection for some dim-witted bimbo." "Hey," Deacon said, eyeing her hopefully, stirring up some of his confidence, "Are you jealous?"
"Hell no," Renee answered much too quickly. Damn him for thinking that. Damn her for actually feeling it.
"Come on, Renee," Deacon said grinning as he placed his hand on the wall beside her head and dared to lean in closer, "Admit that you still want me."
Oh, how she hated it when he got so conceited. She hated when he he acted like he could see right through her; when he accused her of still harbouring those lustful feelings toward him. But she hated it most of all when he was right.
"Screw you," Renee placed her palms on his chest and gently pushed him away, releasing herself from the intoxication.
"Yea, I wish you would already," Deacon said, arrogantly.
Renee rolled her eyes as she pushed him around the corner so their anticipated row would be out of sight. "Stop saying stuff like that," Renee scolded him.
Deacon leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. "Stop acting like nothing ever happened between us."
He knew the game she was playing. Trying to act like she never thought more of him than the jerk he was labeled as. But it wasn't easy to wipe those memories away. How could she forget those countless moments she shared with him in that old island house? That damn house that caused her world to turn completely upside-down. She closed her eyes, not responding to him, and though she tried to ignore them, those memories with him clouded her mind.
"Admit it Renee," Deacon interrupted her day dream, "There's still something between us. Hell, you know I want you. I told you how I felt. I changed myself for you! I quit drinking for you! I poured my whole damn heart out to you! I told you I loved you and you just swatted it away like some worthless bug!" Renee remembered his confession in the hallway late that one night; the faint smell of alcohol lingering on his breath as he told her he had fallen in love with her. She didn't know if she could believe his words. She didn't know what to think of them. The look in his eyes had been so sincere, so genuine, but Renee just couldn't bring herself to return the words.
"I didn't ask you to do those things," Renee said quietly.
"What do you want me to do? Beg you?" Deacon continued desperately, "Damn, Renee, I just want to be with you. You can't deny that you still feel it too. Just because prince charming comes waltzing back into town doesn't make what happened between us go away."
No. She would not admit any feelings she had for him. "Deacon, I want to talk to you about us," she said, trying to be calm, "I really do but now is not the time. I actually came to talk to you because I really just need that package from you... and those papers... that we got last night."
"Why should I just hand them over to you so easily?" Deacon replied, "You never give anything so easily to me!"
"Deacon, please," Renee pleaded with him. However angry and frustrated she was, she couldn't let it show. If she had any hopes of getting that package from him, she'd have to play it his way. "I'm sorry, all right?" she said, even though she wasn't quite sure what she was apologizing for, "I told you I wasn't interested in starting a relationship with you again time after time. You're the one who kept pursuing me. I don't know why you're so surprised that I was with Fred last night."
"You're a tease," Deacon spat, "And until you admit you still have feelings for me, I'm not handing over your precious package." Deacon suddenly grabbed Renee and in a swift motion he dipped forward, cradling her in his arms. Her hands were forced around his neck in fear that she would fall, but he wasn't about to let her go. He looked straight into her eyes... Renee felt extremely light-headed... and then he kissed her hard on the lips.
"You just remember that," he said as he released and steadied her. Renee recomposed herself, stabling her balance and brushing the invisible dust off of her clothes.
"You have some nerve, Deacon Smith." Renee tried to sound appalled, putting her hand to her lips which felt bruised with his brand. Deacon stormed away, slamming the door to his dorm room as he shut himself into it, leaving Renee frusrated and angry but most of all... confused.
Why was she so jealous of Deacon and that strange girl? And why was she so swept away when he had just lustfully embraced her? Perhaps there was some truth to what he had said.
As she turned the corner and saw Fred smiling back at her, guilt rushed through her. Whatever feelings she may or may not have for Deacon would have to be pushed aside. She had a man who had just promised to take her on the adventure of a life time. Fred had promised to open himself up to her every day for the rest of his life; she had seen the sincerety in his eyes, she had felt his genuine touch. That was everything that she had wanted... right? Renee had spent the night at Fred's apartment again, leaving the dorm room she shared with Pryia free for whatever untold things Blaine and Priya did behind closed doors.
Sunday had gone by without any serious drama. Fred and Renee spent the entire day in their secluded corner of the library talking more about the map, the castle ruins and the artifact.
Renee had told Fred that she had gotten the package from Deacon and had it safely hidden even though Deacon still had it. She didn't want to cause any stress or make Fred angry at her. Renee was stressed enough, her stomach violently nauseous all day; she didn't need to bring down Fred too... so she hid it. They spent most of their time arranging transportation, by train was the only way, to their desination for the coming Tuesday. Renee and Fred spent a brief moment talking about their relationship and she told him she wanted to take it slow. "There's a lot going on right now," Renee had said, "Maybe once we get back from our trip we can make it... official or something." Fred didn't want to wait. He felt his time away from her was wasted and he wanted to make up for the lost time. But he understood how Renee wanted to take it slow.
What he didn't know was that Renee really didn't want to take things any farther with him until she worked everything out with Deacon and explained it all to Fred. Renee had skirted around telling Fred all that had happened between her and Deacon over the past month. She was waiting for the right time... but there just didn't seem to ever be one. Renee had intentionally avoided Deacon all day as she tried to think of how to react to his threat to withhold the package from her until she confessed having feelings for him. She was cutting it close. Her and Fred were to leave for their adventure on Tuesday; in two short days. She decided she would get that package tomorrow... and she would tell Deacon whatever he wanted to hear to get it.
Renee packed quickly that evening. She didn't pack a lot; just threw some clothes haphazardly into her bag. She was strangely over-exhausted from the day, feeling emotionally and physically drained. She laid down to try and go to sleep early. Deacon couldn't sleep. He restlessly tossed and turned in his bed for hours upon hours, never even catching a wink. Invented images of Fred and Renee kept rolling over inside his head. Fred was holding her how Deacon was supposed to be holding her; kissing her, touching her. All night these graphic scenes spun through his mind. He hummed to himself, played a video game, and even tried reading a school book... anything to keep him from going mad. Deacon threw his boring textbook to the floor and sat up in frustration. Everything seemed so annoyingly magnified... Blaine's rumbling snores and Danny mumbling in his sleep irritated his every nerve. He glanced tiredly at his end table. It was five o'clock in the morning. Great; it was Monday already. No use in trying to sleep now; the consistently punctual sun and the strident noises of the dormitory would be waking him up in a few hours anyway. He left his dorm room, unintentionally slamming the door behind him, and made his way down the hallway. It was very dark, still and quiet. Deacon walked toward the common room and wasn't surprised to hear a couple of students fooling around on one of the sofas in the secluded corner. Amused, Deacon glanced over as he made his way passed them. He gasped suddenly; not at what they were doing, but at who they were. Roman and Tatum were tussling on the couch, their clothes strewn about the floor.
Well, that was news to him.
Shocked, Deacon quickly tore his eyes from the scene and speedily walked away unnoticed. Deacon, shuddering at what he had just witnessed, continued toward the coed lavatory.
He entered the dim bathroom, not expecting anybody to be there this late... or was it early?... in the day. But there a girl sat, wrapped in a towel, on one of the vanity stools facing the mirrors. She wasn't looking at her reflection but at her hands folded in her lap. She must not have heard him enter because she did not turn to look. Deacon figured she didn't want to be bothered and so he walked over to his locker and began to fiddle with the combination lock. He opened the door with the abrupt clashing noise that metal lockers make which echoed loudly through the tiled room.
"Deacon?" the girl said after she turned to see who had made the noise. Deacon faced her. "Renee," he said, surprised to see her, "What are you doing here?"
"Goodness," Renee breathed, putting her hand to her chest, "You startled me." She smiled, surprisingly friendly, and explained the obvious, "I was just taking a shower... what else would I be doing?"
"Of course," Deacon replied, feeling mildly foolish, "That's what I came here to do. It's just a strange time to be here."
"Well, you're also here," she poked fun, "So you must be strange too." Deacon laughed. "I couldn't sleep," he told her.
"Me neither."
"Why are you just sitting there though?" he asked her curiously, "I thought you'd be with... Fred."
"Oh," Renee looked down again, "Well, I was all day but... I needed to start packing for spring break last night."
"Oh," Deacon just said.
"Deacon," Renee told him, "I've wanted to talk to you about, you know... about us."
"Or lack there of, I guess," Deacon remarked.
"I know we kind of got closer again this past month," Renee started, "And I tried to make sure you didn't get the wrong idea. But Fred and I-" "What do you see in him anyway?" Deacon interrupted, suddenly set off, "What does he have that I don't have? What's so special about that dork that makes you want to reject someone who loves you as much as I do?"
"Deacon," Renee stammered, "You and I are friends. Whatever else you and I have, or had, it's not love. They were just some random flukes."
"Yea but they were good flukes," he said as he closed in on her, putting his hand on her shoulder, "They were passionate flukes, Renee. Why are you going to suddenly abandon them when he pops back in to town? He's the one who left you, remember?" Deacon's voice started rising into a frustrated, upset tone, "He left you, Renee. The coward left without even telling you goodbye! And who was here for you when he ditched you? Who's always been here?" He took a deep breath and sighed, trying to calm himself down. "I would never leave you," he added sincerely.
"He only did that because he cared," Renee said, almost trying to convince herself as well as Deacon. "Bull," Deacon cursed. "Tell me this," he said, standing closely in front of her, forcing her to meet his gaze, "Does he love you? Does he love you like I do?"
Renee felt the invisible wall she had put up around her starting to crumble under Deacon's blunt force. Renee gave him a lame answer, but it was honest, "He's never told me that."
"Then what is it about him?" Deacon questioned her, his voice steadily growing in volume, "Is he that good of a shag that you just can't let him go?"
"That's none of your business," Renee angrily yelled back.
"Just honestly tell me," Deacon shouted, "Did he shag you? Is that why you're keeping him around?"
Renee struggled with herself on what to tell him. Boy, she could really make him jealous with one answer. She finally just decided to be open and honest with him. "No," Renee answered truthfully looking him straight in the eye, "Even though it's none of your business... No. Fred and I never slept together." Renee thought she saw Deacon's angry expression cave beneath relief. He looked at her and Renee could sense a hint of insecurity behind his words, "Then why don't you want me?"
The space was silent except for the sound of their deep breathing. "You lied to me," Renee simply stated feeling the memories of what he had done to her at the island house pull at the pit of her stomach. She took a sudden interest in the tiled floor. She couldn't look at him.
"I didn't lie about the ballroom, you assumed it was me and I didn't want to disappoint you! I made a mistake and I told you I'm sorry for that. And how many times do I have to point out that thing with Tatum, however stupid and careless, was before you and I were ever together?" Deacon said, apparently frustrated. Following the silence, he placed his hand below her chin. He tilted her face upward so her eyes had no choice but to stare back into his. "That was all before I fell in love with you," he added, the look in his eyes so sincere. He was looking right through her and she knew it. She knew he could sense the tension between them every time they got too close. Renee fought it, backing away until she almost toppled off the back of the stool. Deacon grabbed her, steadying her back onto the seat. He held tightly onto her waist and pushed his forehead against hers, taking in her scent. It drove him absolutely crazy. Renee let out a relaxed sigh. His luring lips just inches away from her own. Damn. She was letting him get to her again.
Renee shifted in her seat attempting to break the tempting moment, "Deac..."
"Why are you fighting this?" he questioned her, his voice calm, "I know you want to give into it. Like you did while we were dancing at the restaurant; like you did in the common room that night. You kissed me back and I know you wanted it. And I don't exactly remember what happened at the pub that night but I do know you chose to be with me the entire evening. You wanted me then. So why are you fighting it now?" Damn it. He did it again. He was being blatantly forward but he was right. She hated to admit it but she was feeling wildly intoxicated with him. She didn't want him to see it. All she could do was silently look at him with hopes that her stare might possibly appear intimidating.
It didn't work.
He moved in closer and whispered seductively into her ear, "You want this, Renee." She automatically lifted her head upward, closing her eyes at the sensation of their closeness. Suddenly, Renee felt Deacon press his lips against hers for a moment, testing their willingness. Renee's knees buckled beneath her and she knew that Deacon noticed her unsteadiness.
He captured her lips once more, holding her tighter. Renee hesitated, not complying with his gesture but not pulling away either. He didn't remove his lips from hers, as unresponsive and still as she sat, not daring to break the connection. His hand moved from her face and Renee suddenly felt them wildly roaming her back.
Her eyes fluttered shut at his fiery touch. And without even realizing it, she returned the pressure of his lips against hers. Her mouth slowly parted beneath his, almost of its own will, as she received him. He explored her with an expertise Renee didn't question.
Lost in the unruly moment, Renee forgot all of the reasons why she shouldn't have been doing it; kissing him, touching him. It felt too right to be wrong. The door to the bathroom unexpectedly opened.
Renee opened her eyes, quickly coming back to reality, and noticed Talia entering the lavatory out of the corner of her eye. Suddenly feeling embarrassed and ashamed, Renee pulled her towel tightly shut and pushed Deacon away. Talia actually didn't look surprised. "Sorry," she said, feeling intrusive, avoiding eye contact with them as she went to her locker, "I didn't mean to impose on... whatever it is that you're doing."
"Talia, this isn't..." Renee stammered. She didn't know what it was or wasn't. She didn't know what to say.
"It's okay, Renee," Talia responded, "I won't say anything." Completely mortified, Renee placed her hands over her face as if they would hide her; make her disappear.
"Why should this be a secret?" Deacon whispered to her through the awkward silence, "Why are you so ashamed of me?"
"I'm not ashamed of you," Renee said, "I'm ashamed of myself. I just should be able to control myself with you and you make it so hard. We just keep making the same mistake over and over again."
"How can you call that a mistake? You can't tell me that wasn't good. You can't tell me there was nothing there just now between us. We have a connection, Renee," Deacon said, "Don't tell me you didn't want that just now. I could feel that you wanted me just as much as I did you." "I did, Deacon," Renee answered him, speaking softly, "I did and that's what's so wrong about it. I want you for all of the wrong reasons. You know I don't want a relationship with you. You know I don't feel that way and yet you keep pursuing me. Why can't you just let me go so we can both move on?"
"I've changed Renee," Deacon's voice was rising and Renee was sure that Talia could hear their conversation whether she wanted to or not, "I've changed since you first knew me and it's because of you. I'm only so persistent because I know what I want and I don't want to lose it. I just want to be with you. Give me a chance. Please don't run away from me again. We have a good thing going."
"What about that Michelle girl that came up to you at the dance? And that tall, blonde girl I keep seeing you with?" Renee asked him, "You're all over her one minute and then you have the nerve to come onto me the next. And I'm the stupid idiot who surrenders myself to you time and time again. How is that a good thing?" "Who? Jane?" Deacon replied, "She means nothing to me. Neither of them do. You're who I want."
"Well it's not always what you want that's best for you." Renee closed her eyes in frustration. "We should talk about this later," she whispered, "When we're alone."
"Like when, Renee? Quit putting it off! I'm leaving in two days," Deacon told her, "I'm going home for spring break." He paused... and then suddenly smiled. "Come with me," he unexpectedly said excitedly, "Come home with me. Let's get away for a while and you'll see-"
"I can't," Renee said.
"Why not?"
"I'm going on vacation," she answered quietly, sparing any details.
Deacon frowned, disappointedly sighing. "With Fred then?"
"Yea," Renee nodded, "I think it's best if you and I just move on, Deacon."
"Where are you going with... him?" It was hard for Deacon to say Fred's name without a tone of deep detestation.
"Don't know yet," Renee shrugged, omitting the information, "Just somewhere away from here for a bit." "Please, Renee," Deacon said, almost sounding desperate, "Just consider coming with me instead."
"No, Deacon," Renee spurted quickly almost like she had to get the words out before she decided against speaking them, "I don't want you. Don't you get that? This needs to be over now. I don't want you."
Deacon was too sad to be angry. She was doing everything with Fred that he wanted to be doing with her. No matter how many times he tried to convince her, she wasn't budging. He was doing this to himself. He knew how she would refuse and reject him and he was constantly setting himself up for disaster after disaster. He couldn't bare it anymore. It was too hard loving her so much when she didn't love him back.
"Fine, Renee," Deacon said, a bitter tone to his voice, "You're the one asking me to move on... so I will move on. But you just remember that you're the one who broke it off."
"We can't just be friends, can we?" Renee said doubtfully, more as a statement than a question. "No," Deacon moaned, "You don't get it, Renee. It's too hard. I can't be near you without these feelings I have for you going crazy. I was going mad all last night with jealousy just wondering what the heck you were doing with... him. You know we can't be friends because you feel the connection between us too or else we wouldn't keep finding ourselves in situations like tonight. You can really love me, Renee. And you're throwing it all away." She didn't say anything, but looked almost like she was going to cry. He kissed her forehead in a desperate way as if he might never do it again. "I'll bring you your damn package later today," he said before turning to leave, "See you, Renee." Renee stayed seated and rubbed her eyes which were stinging, threatening tears.
Talia was sitting on a bench in front of the lockers facing away from Renee. She heard her sniffing and suddenly felt truly sorry for her.
"Renee," Talia said, turning around to face her, "I don't mean to intrude but it was hard not to overhear some of that. Do you want to talk about it or something?"
Renee hesitated. Her and Talia weren't really that close. In fact, she would get the strange feeling that Talia didn't like her for some unknown reason. But in that moment, Renee needed someone to talk to; someone who wanted to listen... someone who wasn't Fred or Deacon. Renee slowly stood up and walked over to join Talia on the benches. She just sat there silently staring at the floor.
"I'm sorry you had to break it off with Deacon like that," Talia told her genuinely, "I heard what you said and I don't think you meant it... that you don't want him. You do like Deacon, don't you?"
Renee just sighed, slightly nodding her head.
Talia said, understandingly, "And Fred too then, huh?"
"I think people are getting the wrong idea about me," Renee responded, "Thinking I'm some sort of hussy. Is that how you see me too?"
"Well," Talia replied, "I'll admit that I may have got that impression a little... just that night when Fred left and you appeared to be with Deacon and Danny all in the same night. But I know the truth about that now."
"Well the rest of our dormitory doesn't," Renee frowned, "They have no idea. They just assume the dirty." "Who cares what they think," Talia replied, "I know it was hard but I think you made the right choice for you. Granted, Deacon has changed quite a bit since he's met you and he's never claimed to love somebody like you... but once a cheater, always a cheater." Talia sighed, "Plus I know what it's like... I mean, how hard it must be to choose between two people that you care so much about."
"Thank you, Talia," Renee smiled, "Thanks for understanding. I'm really glad to have a friend like you."
"I'll tell you something," Talia whispered, "If you promise not to tell anybody. And I mean not anybody. Not Deacon or Fred or Priya or... Danny." She paused. Talia strangely found herself needing to confide in Renee, "I'm only telling you because I think you'll understand and relate. Maybe we can help each other through this." "Okay," Renee said, finally looking her straight in the eye, "I promise I won't tell anybody. You can trust me."
"I'm engaged," Talia said quickly.
"What?" Renee responded shocked, "To whom? How come we've never met him?"
Talia explained, her head hanging low, "It's sort of an arranged marriage."
"Are you serious?" Renee replied, surprised. She surveyed Talia's frown. "You don't love him, do you?"
Talia shrugged, slightly shaking her head. "I've only met him a few times," she disclosed, "His name is Phillip. I really cared for him at first. He's perfect. Too perfect. He's charming, sweet and very successful. He's a few years older than me and owns his own advertising company. He's promised me a very secure life. I'm to marry him when I graduate." "Do you have to?" Renee questioned, "I mean is that what you really want?"
"No," Talia answered openly, "I honestly think I'm falling in love with somebody else. I don't want to say who quite yet... because I haven't even told him about the engagement or that I think I might love him. It's just... arranged marriages are a custom in my family. My parents did it; my two older sisters did it. I'm expected to do it. The rich life Phillip is offering me is more than anyone could ask for. I'm just so torn."
Talia sighed to herself. Danny would be more than angry if he had found out the real reason she was so intent on keeping their relationship a secret. She couldn't make up her mind on which path to take. It was selfish, she thought. But she wanted to work through it herself before she made any rash decision.
"Holy crap, Talia," Renee's jaw was dropped, "Why does everything have to be so complicated?" Suddenly, Renee started to sob, deeply gasping for air.
"Oh my God, Renee," Talia put her hand on Renee's shoulder, "What's wrong?"
"I-" Renee stuttered through her sobs, "I-I'm... I'm pregnant."
Talia's eyes shot wide open in complete shock. She tried not to overreact so Renee would remain calm. Talia rubbed Renee's arm reassuringly, consoling her, "It's okay, Renee. It's okay. Calm down." "I-I just," Renee wept, "I just don't know how it happened."
Talia laughed a little, trying to lighten the mood, "Well, Renee?"
"That's not what I mean," she replied, struggling to get her words out, "I just-- We weren't expecting to take it that far... it just happened. We were so stupid. We didn't use protection. It was a spontaneous, careless moment and we were just so... stupid."
"Well," Talia asked her cautiously, "Is it Fred? Is he the father?"
"No," Renee answered, shaking her head, "Fred and I never slept together."
"Oh no," Talia gasped. "It's Deacon then?"
"N-no," Renee replied through her sobs. Talia looked at her, taken aback. Who else could she have been with recently? Renee took a deep breath, "I... I've only ever been with one person." Talia, completely stunned, immediately stopped rubbing Renee's shoulder. Her heart felt like it had stopped; her breath caught in her chest.
"D-Danny?" Talia asked, although she was already one-hundred percent sure of the answer. She didn't want to believe it. "But..." Talia searched for words, trying not to sound as enraged as she felt, "You haven't been together since... since before... when you guys were young... at camp."
"Yea, we have," Renee was wiping the constant flowing tears from her cheeks, trying to catch her breath, "One night a few months ago." "A f-few months?" Talia stuttered... it couldn't be; that's how long she and Danny had been together and he had denied any feelings for Renee. She felt furious; furious and heart broken all at once. She wanted to be angry at Renee... but this wasn't Renee's fault. She hadn't known about Talia and Danny's relationship. It was Talia who firmly insisted on keeping it a secret from everyone. "Are you sure?"
Renee nodded, "I just took the test. I had been feeling weird the past month but I just didn't suspect I could be pregnant. I haven't even been to the doctor. I haven't told anyone else yet... just you. I don't know what to do."
Talia felt a strange compassion for Renee despite the distressing news she had just received. "I'll help you through this, Renee," Talia said empathetically, comfortingly rubbing her arm once again, "You shouldn't have to go through it alone. I'll take you to the doctor today."
"But I'm supposed to leave for spring break tomorrow with Fred," Renee cried, "This is such a mess."
"Well Fred will have to wait," Talia said, "You can't just run off on some vacation without going to the doctor. I'm taking you today."
"I really appreciate it," Renee tried to smile, "But please don't tell anyone; especially not Danny. I want to tell him myself."
"Oh," Talia bit her lip, "I have a feeling I won't be talking to Danny for a while." "Thanks," Renee said, unaware of the hidden meaning behind Talia's words, as her new confidante embraced her, "I'm really glad we can trust each other." Renee quickly threw on some sweatpants and a tank top and sleepily walked back to her dorm.
Danny was sitting in the hallway directly outside of her room. "What's wrong?" Danny immediately asked her when she approached, sensing her mood.
"Nothing much," Renee responded quietly, "Just got in a bit of a row with Deacon."
"Well that would explain why he's in there throwing things at the walls," Danny laughed a little, "Woke me up out of a dead sleep. He threw a shoe at my head. I had to get out of there." Renee's expression didn't change. Danny looked concerned as he asked, "Are you okay?"
"Sure," Renee said, shrugging. "For some reason I don't believe you," Danny said doubtfully, "You used to tell me everything and now I feel like you're hiding things from me. Is this about the package that you got for Fred and that Deacon has? Won't he give it to you?"
"He will," replied, "Don't worry about it, Danny. It's not a big deal. Everything's fine."
"There's something you're not telling me, Renee," Danny said, "What is going on with you?"
"Nothing Danny!" Renee spat, "Just let it go!" She turned away, frustrated, and walked to her door. "Renee," Danny said as he stood up, "I know you. And I know that something is going on with you. Why won't you tell me?"
Renee turned around quickly, "I just don't want to talk about it now, okay Dan?" He walked up to her and placed his hand on her shoulder. "You know you can tell me, Renee," he said calmly, "I won't pressure you but you know that I'm always here for you. You seem hurt and it's bothering me. You're one of my best friends and I care about you." He paused. "Not only that," he continued cautiously, "But I feel like you're up to something that's not good. You stole that package and you and Fred have been really secretive. I'm just worried."
"Don't worry about it," Renee said, "There's nothing going on. You're over analyzing everything."
"It's not just me though, Renee," Danny said, "Deacon's naturally suspicious; says you won't tell him anything either. Roman said he noticed something funny was going on. Talia mentioned you were acting strange. So I know something's up." If he only knew the half of it.
Danny sighed, "You don't have to tell me now, okay? But I'm always here for you no matter what."
Renee grabbed her stomach, completely aware of the tiny being hiding deep inside of it. She couldn't bring herself to tell Danny yet. She was still in shock; she wanted to be grounded before she broke the news to him. He was an unimaginably great friend and she knew he would take responsibility and be supportive when the time came to tell him. It just wasn't time yet.
Renee certainly wasn't going to tell Danny about her and Fred's upcoming adventure either. That was between her and Fred. Danny noticed her sorrowful expression and offered his arms to her. She took them as he pulled her into a hug.
He smiled. "I'm going to find out anyway, you know," Danny said, "I can't let you get into trouble."
"You've always been so protective of me," Renee replied, "Thanks but I'll be okay, Danny." She released him and forced a weak smile, "I'll talk to you tomorrow." Danny watched her silently walk away and enter her dorm room, the door closing quietly behind her.
Whatever secretive things Renee was up to, he was going to find out whether she wanted him to or not. ...to be continued.
Thanks for reading!

I'd like to say more than I can say here. But what I will say is your consistent characterization, the complex relationships between your characters, your ability to write and allow them to grow and change, is way beyond most of what is posted here.
Wonderful shots -- different camera angles and poses. The extreme closeup screencaps in the bathroom -- great, great work!
You continue to play with a fantastic, but believable plot and you make it work. Really good. Extraordinarily good!

I figured she was pregnant. But as much as I liked it, I pretty much hate Renee now. It doesn't matter if she likes two people, she can't do that to Fred, he has done her no wrong.
Please just make that part of the drama end... and oh dang, Danny has baby mamma drama now.
Love it! Still think Talia is only hurting herself. And Blaine, well lets just hope he doesn't get too hurt or doesn't get involved with some dirty work. And the Sliver Seekers... nice touch!
Overall fantastic job on this story, amazing response as always and thanks for continuing to sign my guestbook and telling me when a new one is out!

Oh my god, my jaw seriously dropped when I read that Renee was pregnant! Thank god it's not with Deacon, that guy just needs to go away. I just hope that it doesn't interfere with Renee and Fred's adventure! But I'm guessing they're going back to the island, and that dagger may be the key on the well that Fred examined before they left. But the silver seekers may be following them. Able is obviously one of them, and maybe he was planting the dagger at the school on purpose because he knew that they'd know what to do with it. My best guess for who was following Fred in Veronaville would be Sly. His name just seems to fit. And I really have to stop writing novels for comments. I just can't wait to see what happens next!

I forgot to say earlier, thank you for telling me it was out! Also, I have always had a feeling that Fred is going to get too wrapped up in this quest and he is going to become almost obsessed with it... Also, I am afraid, Deacon is going to go downhill again--like he was before Renee... I hope not. It is sooo hard to get a don juan to fall in love with someone and when they do it just like ruins them when they are rejected and they don't ever want to love again! I can honestly say I like Deacon over Fred but Danny over Deacon... Danny would be the best guy for her.. Not only is she having his child, but he has nothing that he could do that would hurt her or put her life in jeopardy.... Beautifully done!

I am sorry to write again, but I am confused about something a little bit... If she was with Danny a few months ago, wouldn't she have known a little bit sooner that she was pregnant? Also, that night that her and Deacon were together at the place, did they do the dirty or no? I thought she was with all the guys
So I got a little confused at that.... Because if they did get together in that way at the place, then the baby might be his.....

Hey Rae! It's your sista. I just signed up to comment (finally!) because I LOVE this chapter of your story the most. I still like Fred the best (although Deacon comes in at a close second). I have a feeling Deacon is not going to let Renee go so easily. I can't wait to see what happens after Renee goes to the doctor. What will all of the boys do when they find out she preggo? Also I was checking out those screen shots from the book store place and I keep seeing that same girl in every scene. Is she significant? Or were you just too lazy to bring other characters into the lot?
Jk. It's definitely the coolest story I've ever read and I am excited to see the continuation. Love!

Poor Fred. Poor Renee, Danny... EVERYONE!!! Except Tatum... though I'm assuming she bought that little trinket... and I think that red headed chick was the one that was watching Fred the whole time. Actually, I'm sure of it. Wow!!! lol. I'm still shocked about her being pregnant! Geez, that poor girl really got her in a heap of trouble! She can barely control her feelings because she's so confused. I'm desperate to know what happens when everyone finds out. Especially Fred's reaction. I'm sorry for him already. I CAN'T WAIT for the next part to come out. This one was amazing and I know the next one will be too. WOW. I don't think I'll recover from the shock.

As if she didn't know that Roman was her [Renee] brother, I mean, they're supposed to be twins aren't they?? I loved EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF IT!!!! This should be made into a book or something, maybe change the name of Veronaville to something else or something, but this was absolutey great!!! I can't wait to see how Danny takes the news, I was just like "Tell him tell him you silly woman!!" I actually gasped when I found out that Danny was the father!!!

with either Danny, Deacon or Fred. But they had sex MONTHS ago in that house, why is she only pregnant NOW?
Talia engaged???

This has GOT to be the most shocking thing about her... she seemed so innocent before
... And I wanna know more bout this Grizz & Sly fellas. They're most probably trouble
And Deac has GOT to let go of Renee, shes Fred's!

And I also notice that I keep getting the same crummy feeling that Renee miiiiiiiight be pregnant with Deac instead of Dan.
:eek
ouble EEK! It kinda makes sense; she & Deac can't remember what happened at the pub.. 'Only the moon and the stars saw what happened in the garden behind the pub that night.'
: thats why she thinks the baby is Danny's.
But I'm having high hopes that it isn't true.....

hi, I feel that it's a little weird, Renee being pregnant and all, I mean it makes the storline of the entire series change I mean Fred's character is so much less shy around people, even around people he hardly knows and he acts very forward and he keeps interupting Renee when he is normally so kind and cosiderate of other people's feelings. Renee being pregnant with Danny's baby is a little hard to believe seeing as they slept togther months ago now she should be like... fat! For all we know it could be a false alarm, pregnancy tests aren't always right maybe when Talia takes Renee to the doctor he might say that the reason for her stomachaches and nausea is because she has a disease. Or even a mild, serious, very serious or exteremely serious disease! Soooooo she may not be pregnant at all, who konws what lies in store for the characters of Oasis Island, Rach might have a crazy idea in the next chapter(when it is finally posted).
