Oasis Island 5

Hi again! It's me. Here it is: the fifth part of Oasis Island. If you have not read the first four parts, click on my name and they are listed under my stories. I apologise to those of you who don't enjoy long stories as this one is the longest yet! I urge you to please try reading it anyway and if you get tired, take a break and come back later. Well, prepare yourself for another adventure with our crazy characters! Enjoy!
Deacon could not sleep. He sat alone in his room thinking of many ways to explain why he did what he did and why he had lied to Renee, but none of them sounded excusable at all. They just made him seem like the really awful person everyone had thought he was and Deacon was beginning to agree. Renee wouldn't forgive him after he had lied; she wouldn't believe his reasons for apology anyway. But if he waited too long to tell her, his chance for redemption would be slim. He debated with himself for hours into the night about what and when he should tell her, but by the early hours of the morning, he could not take it anymore. He had to talk to Renee... now. He quietly entered Renee's room to find her tucked completely underneath her thick blanket which was slowly moving up and down in rhythm with the light breathing sound that filled the quiet room.

"Are you awake?" Deacon asked softly.

The lump of blanket moved suddenly, startled. "No," she said, her voice muffled by the covers, as she rolled to the other side of the bed pulling the blanket over her head, "Leave me alone."
Deacon walked over to the bed and sat down on the unoccupied side, "Please. I just want to apologize... for so many things and I don't know where to start. I'm sorry I lied to you. I just haven't felt this way about anyone... ever... and I don't really know how to control it. I just don't want to mess it up anymore than I have... if it's not too late already. I-I think I love you, Renee."

A simple snort responded; he could tell she was listening but choosing to not speak.

"I know it's probably hard to believe me now but it's the truth. I do. I know I do because this feeling is making me lose control! Normally, I wouldn't have cared. It just shows what an awful man I really was, but my feelings for you are changing that. I didn't mean to lie about the ballroom; you just assumed it was me and I didn't want to dissapoint you. It was a stupid thing to do."
"And I know it's not an excuse but that whole thing with Tatum was before we got together," he continued, "It wasn't meant to happen; she was all over me and I just lost sight of what I really wanted. I didn't want to do it. It didn't mean anything."

She snorted again in disgust and pulled the blanket farther over her head, pretending to snore loudly.

"Please Renee, don't ignore me. That's the worst. I guess I deserve it though for being such a liar," Deacon said, "And I shouldn't have freaked out about that whole thing with you and Danny. I know it was a long time ago and it has nothing to do with us now. I was just so caught off guard to find out that you slept with him-"

Whatever Deacon was going to say next was never said; the blanket was suddenly thrown harshly aside by the girl underneath as she finally reacted.
"SHE WHAT?!" Tatum sprang up from under the covers.

Deacon, seeing who it was, immediately jumped back out of the bed and turned to face her.

"SHE WHAT?!" Tatum repeated, yelling, as she copied Deacon's movement.
"What are you doing in here?" Deacon yelled, "Why didn't you stop me from saying all that?"

"Renee slept with Danny?!" Tatum shouted angrily, ignoring his question.

"Yes, but," Deacon stuttered in his anger, "It was a long time ago and... why are you here? Where's Renee?"
"Probably off pretending to be somebody else's friend while she hides secrets about screwing their fiance!" Tatum yelled.

"I told you it was a long time ago!" Deacon said, "And why are you yelling at me? I didn't sleep with Danny."

"Yea but you sleeping with me in this freakin' house is the reason Danny and I are not together now!" Tatum screamed.

"No it's not!" Danny argued, "It's because you flipped out on him for just talking to Talia and threw your engagement ring at him!"

Tatum shouted back, "But I would have been able to face him after that if you hadn't taken advantage of me!"
"ARE YOU JOKING?" Deacon screamed, "YOU CAME ONTO ME!"

"So?" Tatum said, "You let me! You knew I was vulnerable."

"That's bull and you know it!" Deacon yelled, "You're always after me! Just shut up, Tatum. Danny doesn't even want you anymore anyway. He barely cared when he found out we slept together!"

"You told him?!" Tatum asked, shocked.
"No I didn't. As awful as it sounds, I didn't want him to find out. I didn't want anyone to find out! But I'm glad Danny did; even if he's mad at me, it was worth it! Now at least there's not chance in hell he'll ever marry you! He likes Talia now! You're just a big regret!" Deacon said harshly, "I even regret ever being with you at all. I've never liked you. You're a demanding bitch; everybody thinks so, Tatum. They hate you! I'm surprised you even got little push-over Danny to propose to you! And now he hates you too!"

Tatum stared at him in shock. "You'll pay for this," she suddenly squealed, "All of you will! I'll make all of your lives a living hell!"

Deacon rudely laughed and left the room assuming her threat was as good as empty.
Meanwhile, Renee and Danny were still up. They had relocated to Danny's room; Renee didn't dare go back to her room knowing that Tatum still occupied it.

Danny and she had been up all night. They spent most of it under the covers of his small, rickety bed, but in the last hour of the early morning, Renee wanted to read the book Danny had explained to them the night before.

"You left a lot of details out," she said as she neared the end, "And you got some of it wrong."
"Sorry! I told you my reading comprehension is not as good as Fred's," Danny laughed as he looked up from the book he had been reading. It was about encounters with wild animals on the island. He reached a page about wolf sitings and was suddenly reminded of his adventures outside with Talia. Danny didn't know Talia would be so angry when she found out he had slept with Renee those years ago. He didn't know she liked him that much but now it was obvious. Danny had always thought about asking Talia out; he just never mustered up the courage to act on his thoughts. In this moment, however, any thoughts of Talia were immediately shut away with the pages of the book as he slammed it closed and spoke to Renee, "What did I tell you from the book that was wrong?" "It's not really that important but you mistold this bit about Vince," Renee said pointing to the pages, "Vince wasn't married to the baby's mother and she didn't really flee in fear after Theo killed the king."

"Oh?" Danny said, mildly interested.

"Yea," Renee continued...
"A woman, named Taryn, was actually a red knight and she witnessed the king's murder. Vince refused to let Theo harm a woman but Theo refused to allow Vince to let her go free. They needed to get out of the castle fast, so their quick compromise was to take Taryn with them back to their secret island and hold her captive in their home." "Theo locked her in a room despite Vince's arguments that even if she did escape, she'd never make it off of the island alive. Vince would bring her up food and leave it infront of the door. He'd knock but only ever be answered by silence. She was stubborn at first, refusing to talk or even eat." "But Vince sat outside of the locked door to her room day after day and gradually started to reveal the story of his life to the silence beyond, ending with his attempt at stopping his brother from killing their grandfather. Taryn never responded but she was listening; she could hear the sincerity in his voice. Even without seeing him, she had a strange compassion for this man. She believed his story and sympathized with almost no hesitation." "One day, she finally spoke and let him in. They shared a meal and also a much awaited conversation. As the years went by, they fell in love. But neither of them ever told Theo."

"What was Theo up to?" Danny questioned curiously.

"I thought you read this," Renee replied.

"More so skimmed it," Danny shrugged, "But I got the gist. Anyway... Theo?"
Renee laughed, shaking her head and then continued, "After the king was murdered, the people of the valley became unruly. There was no order; people quit working, stole, and even killed to survive. Accusations flew left and right about the most wanted murderers and innocent people were killed without any trials. They called it 'the night of the riot' when the town was set fire and everybody, who had not been killed, had fled leaving it to ruins. Yet Theo, the real culprit, stayed safe in his secret house on his secret island watching the town go up in flames from a distance with an evil grin spread across his face." Renee muttered, "That jerk" and then continued, "Theo went nuts when he found out Vince and Taryn were together. He threatened to take all of their treasure and leave so Vince hid it far from the house. Theo grew even more furious. He vanished from the island without warning and Vince never knew what happened to his twin."

"Wow," Danny said, "Well, where does the baby come into this?"
"I'm getting to that," Renee explained, "Years went by, and they were growing old in age. The king had been dead for nearly fifty years and the kingdom of the valley was completely abandoned. Vince and Taryn had never planned on ever having children. They didn't want to bring anyone into the danger that surrounded them. It was a miracle when Taryn became pregnant in her old age. Vince wanted nothing more than the best for his child and so, though with great hesitance, he sent Taryn and his unborn child far away from the valley. He promised her he would reunite with them in the future, but he knew the minute he made it that it had been an empty promise. His years left were few. He hid the map in the cellar after that knowing that he would never leave the island again." "So what happened?" Danny asked, now very curious, "Did Vince ever meet his kid?"

"No," Renee said sniffling a litte, "Vince ended up alone. He wrote on this last page, 'I know that my days left here on this earth are few and although I will die here alone, I know that I am not forgotten. To my love, you brought such happiness to my life that I never imagined could exsist and you made my days here on earth worth all the while. And to my child, my biggest regret in life is that I never got to meet you but in my heart I know that you will some day hear this story and discover that I have cared for you the best I could. I wish you well.'"

"Well, that's a bit sad," Danny said as he stood up and made his way over to the dresser, "Is that all it says?"
Renee flipped the book over and noticed a small poem etched in gold on the bottom of the cover. "Desired Escape," Renee said pointing to the tiny title and then read the poem out loud:

"Go down below where flames dance upon the floor.
Descend straight forward. Find the hidden door.
Don't give in to darkness; Reach for the light.
The shadows will be wrong; Pull for the right."

Renee finished and put the book down looking perplexed.
"I didn't see that there. What does it mean?" Danny said, equally confused, as he buttoned up his shirt, "Is it about hell or something?"

"I have no idea," Renee shrugged as she stood up and repeated the title, "Desired Escape... Well, I'm sure anyone would desire to escape hell. Maybe he was afraid to die."

"Maybe," Danny said while zipping up his jeans, "Well, like you said, it's not really that important anyway; just a bunch of mush. That love stuff doesn't help us get out of here anyway. That's what's actually been keeping us here; we're all fighting about it so much we can't work together to find a way out."
"Speaking of which," Renee faced Danny, looking serious, and started to say, "About last night-"

"I know," Danny cut her off, "We'll keep it just between you and me again."

Renee nodded and said, "And please don't let it slip to Deacon this time."

Danny stared at her and then frowned, "You still have feelings for him, don't you?"

Renee copied his expression and slightly nodded, "Well, I don't want to get back together with him or anything; not after all of that. It's just going to take me a while to get over him. And I just don't want anyone thinking you and I did this just to get back at him and Tatum."
"I'm glad you didn't sleep with him, Renee," Danny said softly, "He was telling me the other day that last night was the night he was going to get you to. He certainly would never have expected it to turn out the way it did..."

"Neither did I," Renee smiled and said, "Danny to the rescue again."

He smiled back at her. They silently stared at eachother smiling and thinking of their night together. There seemed to be an unspoken understanding between Danny and Renee about their relationship with eachother. It was understanding that constantly brought them into eachother's arms over the years; the way they had always been judged the same way by others seemed to drive them together and create a rare connection almost unexplainable. But it seemed to be clear to both of them that although their chemistry together was amazing, chemistry was all that it was... and that was okay.
"Wow," Danny simply said.

"Yea," Renee smiled, "You sure give me some amazing nights, Daniel Miller."

"You as well, Miss Speeler," he responded smiling.

She winked at him as she reached for her clothes and dressed, tucking the book into her sweatshirt, "I better go clean up before anyone else is awake."

Danny nodded. "Well, Deacon was right about one thing," Danny said watching her, "You really are something."
Renee said nothing but kissed him passionately for the last time... wether is was for the last time that day, that year or for the last time ever, they didn't know but they sure made it count.

She exited the room without another word, smiling once more over her shoulder as the door closed gently behind her.
Immediately after leaving Danny's room, Renee found herself in the hallway, face to face with Deacon who was looking extremely agitated. However, when he spotted Renee his expression changed to being pleasantly surprised.

Renee tried to walk straight passed Deacon without even looking at him but he stepped infront of her to block her path.
"Please, Renee," he pleaded, "Just listen to me for a minute."

Renee ignored him, not moving but refusing to look into his eyes.

Deacon looked her over and started to say, "Please, don't ignore-" but his thoughts cut off his speech. "Aren't those the same clothes you had on yesterday?" he questioned her suspiciously, "And why weren't you in your room? And what are you doing up so early?"
Renee finally met his suspicious gaze, but hers was piercing him with anger. "You have no right to interrogate me," she said fiercly, "I don't owe you anything."

Deacon knew something wasn't right, but he didn't want to make things worse than they already were. "You're right," he cowardly responded, "I'm sorry. I just-"
"It's a little too late for apologies," Renee held her hand up cutting him off, "You had many chances to come clean, Deacon."

"I tried but-"

"I don't want to hear it," Renee started to walk away, "I can't handle this right now."
Renee walked right passed him and this time, Deacon didn't try to stop her.

She wouldn't listen to him. How could he make her understand? He wanted to scream at her and demand that she hear what he had to say. He felt like he needed to break down and cry but there was no way he would let her see him do that. Deacon felt completely defeated.
Renee tried to keep her cool. She was still so furious with Deacon that she was afraid she would completely go off on him if she talked to him now. She thought she might say some things she didn't mean and also some things that she didn't want Deacon to know. She felt guilty about Danny; he was, afterall, Deacon's best friend. Even though Deacon had done just about the same exact thing to Danny through Tatum, it didn't make it excusable for any of them. It wasn't meant to be revenge but she knew Deacon would see it that way. Deacon couldn't find out.

Without looking back, Renee continued on her way to the wash room.
As she entered, she made another encounter that was unexpected and even more so undesired.

Tatum was there. To Renee's surprise, she was dressed in her normal flashy attire, instead of her recently constant outfit of pajamas, and her hair was done up rather nicely.

Renee was about to leave without saying anything but Tatum had heard the door open and turned to face her.
"What do you think you're doing?" Tatum said snobbishly and Renee was taken aback. She didn't say anything and Tatum responded to her silence, "You think you can just go waltzing around like you didn't do anything wrong!"

Renee looked shocked. Tatum couldn't possibly know about her and Danny's previous night, could she? No, of course not. Renee realized Tatum must have found out about her and Danny's experiences at camp.

"Deacon told me everything," Tatum continued, "You were pretending to be my friend this whole time! You never told me you and Danny slept together!"

"I wasn't pretending and that was a long time ago," Renee started to say, but then she retorted angrily, "Shouldn't I be the one furious with you? You slept with Deacon just a week ago! Here! In this house!"
"I didn't know you two had a thing," Tatum argued, "Yet another secret you decided to keep from me, your supposed friend!"

"How could I tell you any of that when you started bawling like a maniac every time I mentioned some one else in the house?!" Renee yelled back.

"I was distraught!" Tatum yelled, "I actually felt guilty about it where as you could care less that you slept with my fiance! Now because of you, Danny and I aren't back together!"

"Because of me?!" Renee shouted, confounded, "How on earth do you figure that it's my fault?"

"If I would have known about you and him," Tatum said matter-of-factly, "I would've realized that you were just pretending to be my friend to keep me away from him so you could have him all to yourself!"
"Wha? That doesn't make any sense," Renee responded in disbelief, "Did you miss the part where Deacon and I were together?"

"You were only pretending to be with him to distract people from realizing about you and Danny," Tatum said as if it were obvious, "That's why it doesn't really matter to you that Deacon slept with me so you have no reason to be mad."

"Wh-Where the hell do you get these ideas?!" Renee shouted angrily, "Why don't you quit blaming other people for your actions and take some responsibility?!"

"I never do anything wrong," Tatum said seriously, crossing her arms.

"Deacon and Danny were right; you are crazy," Renee cried, "And you're wrong; I did really want to be friends with you and I really, really do care that you slept with Deacon-"

"HE slept with ME," Tatum inserted.

"ENOUGH!" Renee cracked, "I'M TIRED ARGUING! OF ALL OF THIS! JUST GET OUT!"
A smirk appeared on Tatum's face. She seemed satisfied having pushed the right buttons to cause Renee to be this angry.

Tatum gave her a cocky nod and walked out of the room; as she did so, Tatum purposely knocked her shoulder into Renee's causing her to lose her balance and topple backward. Tatum slammed the door without a word, but her actions spoke louder than anything she could have said.

Renee stood still in disbelief.
The sun was rising as Renee washed up and changed into clean clothes.

She couldn't fully comprehend what was happening. Tatum was being rediculous. After all Renee had done for her over the week, Tatum was acting like it all never happened. Did Tatum really believe the accusations she was making? They were so far-fetched and didn't make any sense to Renee. No one could possibly believe Tatum. Although, if anyone did find out about Renee and Danny's previous night together, Tatum's accusations may seem to have a bit of truth to them. But Renee knew those weren't her intentions however sure about them Tatum might be. Renee still couldn't help feeling guilty about it; she didn't think she regretted it but she honestly wasn't certain anymore.

The one thing she was certain about, however, was that she needed to get out of this house... and, especially after the previous night, she was sure everyone else must feel the same way.
She walked down the stairs into the great room and was relieved to find the only other person who she wasn't angry with or who wasn't angry with her.

Fred was playing with Fieval infront of the lively fire. When he looked up at Renee, he gave her an unsure smile. She smiled back, happy just to see someone not yelling at her, and hopefully approached him.
"Mornin'," he said.

"I'm sorry you had to see all that last night," Renee immediately apologized, "I hope you don't think too much less of me."

"Don't worry about it," Fred shrugged, "I don't think badly of you. It wasn't any of my business anyway. I'm just glad you're doing okay today."

Renee suddenly vented, "I just wish I could start this week over again. I messed so many things up. I got involved with the wrong person. There are just so many things I would change if I could. I almost wish we never came here."

"Almost?" Fred asked. He was happy she was realizing all of this but even more so happy that she was confiding it in him.
"Well we did find out some cool history about the island," Renee explained, "I read that other book about Theo and Vince last night." Renee told him what she had read that Danny hadn't explained and then commented, "The location of the map isn't any clearer though. It just said he hid it in the cellar that only their family knew existed. I have no idea where it is though."

"Well, we'll just have to keep looking," Fred said, assuring her, "We'll find it."

"I should've stuck with you from the beginning," Renee said, blushing a little, "At least you're on the same page as me. I'm really glad you're here."

Fred was beside himself. He felt suddenly nervous, unsure of what to say. He awkwardly coughed and then stuttered, his voice a little shaky, "Yea, uh, me, too."

Fieval started wimpering for attention at Renee's ankles relieving Fred.
Renee bent down to pet him.

"He normally doesn't like other people," Fred stated, still a bit nervous, "Especially if they have dogs. He gets jealous."

Renee giggled and said, "Well, I just have cats. A lot of them too. We live on a big farm."

"He hates cats," Fred blurted out before thinking.

"Me too, Fieval," Renee said in a funny voice to the dog, "I don't like 'em either. You'll have to come over to my house and chase them all away for me, won't you?" Fred liked that idea.

Renee examined Fieval's dog tag. It didn't have a phone number or an address. It was an aged, flat, almost star-shaped stone with three letters dully engraved in it. Renee asked, "What's F.V.S.?"

"Me," Fred said, "My initials."

"What do they stand for?" Renee asked.

"Frederick Vincent Shaddock," Fred stated, "Weird name, I know. I didn't pick it."
"I think it's cute," Renee commented, "But aren't you afraid if he gets lost, he won't be returned?"

"He's a smart dog," Fred said, the word 'cute' still echoing in his mind, "He rarely leaves me, but always comes back if he does."

"You're lucky," Renee said, "Too bad he can't sniff out ancient maps though. I don't know how we're all going to work out how to find it."

"Oh yea," Fred remembered, "We're supposed to meet in the dining hall again, Danny said, after breakfast." Fred added, "Oh, and Talia wanted to meet you in the kitchen beforehand."

"Oi! Okay," Renee said, "Well, I guess I better go then. I'll see you in a bit, Frederick." She smiled.

"See you," Fred muttered after her as she walked out of the room.
Renee entered the kitchen to find Danny eating alone at the breakfast table. She sat down across from him, smiling, and commented, "Nice glasses."

"Shut up," Danny said, "I lost one of my contacts last night while... well, you remember."

"Yea," Renee said feeling almost like she didn't want to remember. It was one of the best nights she had ever had; why did she have to feel so bad about it? It was the same reason she did after their time together at camp: guilt. They were keeping it a secret and she would have felt differently if they didn't have to. It felt sneaky and dishonest. But Danny seemed unaffected and Renee wanted to feel the same.

"It's snowing out," Danny said, interrupting her thoughts, "Did you see?"

"Oh, great." Renee said sarcastically. She hadn't noticed but as she looked out the window she saw white flurries falling slowly from above. Renee sighed, "Well, that might complicate things a bit."
"Oh, lighten up," Danny smiled, "It's just a bit of flurries. It's not like there's some huge snow storm... and we still get to miss classes!"

"Yea," Renee laughed, "What are the teachers going to think of all of this? They'll never believe it all."

Just then, Talia entered the room and approached the table quietly. She looked a little uncomfortable but waited until they were done talking to speak. They both looked at her expectantly.
"I asked you guys to meet me here because, well," Talia said, looking embarassed, "I wanted to apologise for being rude last night. Danny, I didn't mean to accuse you of having feelings for Renee. That was stupid of me. I know you were just looking out for her as a friend. And that stuff happened a long time ago anyway; it's not like it was yesterday."

Danny shot Renee an awkward look, almost trying not to smile. Renee shifted uncomfortably in her chair.

Talia didn't notice as she was avoiding their eye contact and continued, "And even if there was something going on between you two now, it's not like we were officially together or anything."
Talia turned to Renee and explained, "Danny and I talked about it but we didn't want to start anything until we got back home. There's just too much going on here."

Renee just nodded, not knowing what to say.

Talia looked Renee in the eye, "I really value our new friendship, Renee, and I just hope I didn't mess things up."
Renee faced Talia feeling more guilty than ever and forced a smile. "Please, don't apologise," Renee said and then looked out of the corner of her eye at Danny, "Let's just forget it ever happened."

"Friends?" Talia said, smiling.

"Yea," Renee said trying not to frown, "Friends."
They all met, yet again, at the dining table that morning. Nobody said anything but most wore angry expressions that reflected the events of the previous evening.

"Uh, so," Danny said uncomfortably trying to lead the discussion but not sure of what to say, "The map."
"I'm sorry, Renee," Deacon suddenly blurted out. Everbody stared at him.

"Not now," Renee said quietly.

"If not now then when?" Deacon said, "I don't care if everybody else hears me! I need you to know I'm sorry. I planned out what I was going to say but even that doesn't do justice to how sorry I actually feel."

"It was actually quite a sappy apology," Tatum commented, "I heard it. Not like Renee would've cared though. She didn't like you anyway, Deacon; she was distracting us from her love for Danny."

"Shut up, Tatum!" Deacon commanded frustrated and then turned to Danny, "I'm sorry to you too, Danny. Talia was right; some best friend I turned out to be. It's just, you guys had just broken up and you know how Tatum has always come onto me-"
"Barf!" Tatum yelled, immaturely, "You're gross. YOU took advantage of ME and then Renee tried to distract me so I couldn't be with Danny."

"Not this again," Renee said frustrated, "I was trying to help you!"

"What the hell are you talking about?" Deacon said at the same time.

Tatum ignored them and continued, almost talking to herself, "And then they lie and say Danny likes Talia just to make me think he doesn't want to marry me anymore. Maybe Renee was trying to keep Deacon from me too. It's all just some sick scheme; I bet Danny didn't even sleep with Renee."
"ENOUGH!" Danny suddenly yelled, "Tatum, I DID sleep with Renee and I DON'T want to marry you and I DO like Talia, okay? And there's nothing that can change any of that now so just drop it and get over it!"

"You're just saying that to piss me off," Tatum said completely in denial.

Danny wanted to scream at the top of his lungs but he just clenched his fists and silently glared at her in fury.
"So, uh, we should probably talk about the map," Fred said lightly breaking the tensioned silence, "Do you guys want to get out of here or what?"

Tatum looked at Fred, annoyed, and then suddenly started screaming at Talia and Danny. Talia was trying to defend herself as Danny was yelling at Deacon who returned mutters of numerous apologies and excuses.

Renee couldn't help but laugh as she shook her head and smiled at Fred.
"Quiet!" Danny suddenly yelled again, pounding the table angrily with his fists.

"Fred's right," Renee said, "We need to focus on the map." Deacon rolled his eyes but said nothing.

"Let's just cool down and go look for this cellar," Danny said, anger still echoing in his voice, "I'll go with Talia. Fred can go with Renee. And Deacon and Tatum, nobody cares what you do as long as you just quit messing up people's lives."

Deacon had an expression that was mixed of anger and sadness. His eyes were watering and as soon as Renee and his eyes met, he immediately got up and hurriedly ran up the stairs.

Tears started streaming from Tatum's eyes and she let out a loud yelp. She screamed a long scrambled sentence through her tears that nobody understood as she stormed out of the room.
"I thought it'd be better if we split up into pairs," Danny said quietly to Renee, "We might find the cellar quicker."

Renee just nodded as Danny and Talia left the room. She tried to smile but found it difficult. She saw the look in Deacon's eyes. He looked like he was actually going to cry. Renee felt a rush of guilt wash away all of her anger. She had, afterall, done the same thing with Danny that she had been so angry at Deacon for doing but Deacon had also lied about the ballroom. What else didn't she know about him?

"Maybe I should go hear what Deacon has to say," Renee said slowly to Fred.

Fred sighed. "If you must," he said hesitantly.
Fred watched her leave the dining hall. He didn't want her to go. He wanted to shout "Wait!" or "Stop!" or "Stay with me!" but his nerves forced him not to. Renee still didn't realize how much Fred actually liked her.

She made her way up the stairs to where the bedrooms were. When she reached the top landing, she started to head toward Deacon's room but as she walked passed Tatum's, she was shocked to see what was happening inside.
Tatum was embracing Deacon; their lips were tightly pressed together.

Renee quickly closed her eyes and turned away.

Deacon saw her and yelled something. He pushed Tatum aside and ran after Renee.
"It's not what it looks like," he cried as he caught up with Renee, "She was doing it again!"

"So what," Renee replied, "I didn't see you doing anything to stop her!"

"I was trying!" Deacon said as Renee started to walk passed him, "Renee, please, just listen to me!" Deacon moaned and cradled his aching head in his hands, not sure of what to say or do.

Renee didn't care what he had to say next if he even did have anything to say at all. She ran passed him as fast as she could without looking back.
She ran passed Fred in the hallway who turned and asked, "What's wrong?" but Renee didn't answer as she sped down more stairs, through a door and down yet another set of stairs. She thumped her body against the wall, slid down it letting out a deep breath and collapsed on the floor of the huge ballroom. She felt so small and useless in such an extravagant room. She stared at her reflection in the shiny floor surrounded by the mirrored images of the lit candles above her. She covered the reflection of her face with her palm unable to look at herself in such an awful state. She then noticed, there beside her hand, a few little, dusty paw prints. She slowly traced them with her finger, smiling. It suddenly dawned on her: Fred had cleaned the ballroom.

She heard foot steps slowly sounding down the stairs.
"Renee," Fred said after quietly approaching her, "What happened?"

"You did this," Renee said softly, not looking at him, "The ballroom, I mean. You cleaned this... for me. Didn't you?"

"Yea," Fred said slowly as he looked away and rubbed the back of his head.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Renee asked finally looking up at him.

"You were, um, happy." Fred said shyly, "I didn't want to mess it up." Renee looked dissapointed. "Sorry," Fred added.

"No. I'm the one who's sorry," Renee looked at him apologetically, "I should've realized. I've been so oblivious. I wish I would have known before I... before I..." she struggled to continue.
"Come on," Fred said grabbing her hand and pulling her off of the floor, "Let's go chill out for a while. Forget all of this stuff for a day."

"But the map-"

"We'll find it," Fred cut her off, "Let's just relax for a bit and talk about it."

Renee smiled, "Thank you."

"For what?"

"For this," she said holding her other hand out toward the huge, sparkling ballroom.

"Don't mention it," Fred said rubbing the back of his head again. He couldn't help but think of her and Deacon utilizing it the night he had cleaned it and added, "Really. Please don't."

Renee laughed. He smiled and then led her back up to the great room holding her hand the entire way.
They rested by the fireplace, staying warm, and played cards through the remainder of the day. As they did, they talked about all of the history they had discovered of the house and any clues about the map's where-abouts that they may have missed. Renee shared, with Fred, the book she had taken from Danny's room but Fred hadn't discovered anything she hadn't.

The sun was setting. Renee stared out the window at the white snowflakes that slowly fell against the dark night sky. There had to be something they were missing.

"Oh yea," Renee suddenly remembered, "There was a poem, called Desired Escape, on the back of the book." She picked up the book, flipped it over and recited the poem once again:

"Go down below where flames dance upon the floor.
Descend straight forward. Find the hidden door.
Don't give in to darkness; Reach for the light.
The shadows will be wrong; Pull for the right."
"Well, that doesn't make any sense," Fred said, "Flames, darkness and shadows? Reach for the light?"

"I know," Renee nodded, "Sounds like hell."

"Well, I'm not going to risk going there to look for a map," Fred laughed, "I'd rather take my chances with the wolves."

"Maybe we should," Renee said but the rest of her sentence was drowned by a yawn. She was overly tired seeing as she didn't even get a wink of sleep the night before.

"Come on," Fred said as he stood up and held his hand out to her, "Time for bed." He pulled her up.
"But we just wasted another day not looking for the map," Renee said, still holding his hand, "Well, it wasn't really wasted at all. But, oh, you know what I mean." Renee blushed.

"We'll find it," Fred said unable to contain his smile, "We'll think of it when we're least expecting it."

"Yea," Renee agreed certain, "We'll make it home."

Then Renee remembered... Fred didn't really have a home. Renee could barely keep her eyes open from being so tired but she didn't want to close them as she stared into those brilliant green eyes so familiar from their very first days at the house. She remembered their first night there; she was getting to know Fred infront of this very fireplace. He confided in her about his past as an orphan and she had felt such sorrow and compassion for him.

As she stared at him, Fred saw the look in her eyes that he had been longing for her return.
She hugged him. He seemed more prepared for it this time as he wrapped his arms snug around her waist and took a deep breath. She ran her fingers through his wavy, ginger hair and closed her eyes. She felt safe in his arms. He felt comforted. Renee fell limply on his shoulder, too tired to carry all of her own weight, and Fred supported her. "Sorry," Renee said as she pulled away still grasping his shoulder, "I'm just really tired."

"It's okay," Fred said, his hand still on her waist, "I'll take you upstairs."

"Thanks," Renee said sleepily as she stared into his eyes. The feelings that she had for Deacon were based on something that Fred had done and she felt incredibly stupid that she hadn't realized it. She wished she would have known before so things would have turned out differently. But it felt a little awkward now that she had shared it all with Deacon. She imagined she was with Fred that night instead of Deacon. The image danced happily in her head as her eyes drooped shut... they glided together across the magnificant room... their reflections surrounded by the dancing candle light upon the shiny floor...

"THE BALLROOM!" Renee suddenly shouted as her eyes shot open.

"What?" Fred said but Renee just shouted, "Flames dance upon the floor! Come on!" as she grabbed his hand and pulled him down the familiar sets of stairs.
"Descend straight forward. Find the hidden door," Renee stated as they reached the bottom of the stairs and walked straight toward the wall, "There's no door here!"

"Are you sure this is what the poem means?" Fred asked, catching on.

"Don't give in to darkness. Reach for the light," Renee recited as she peered at the candles infront of her, "Does that mean these candles?"

Fred shrugged and asked, "What was the next line?"

"The shadows will be wrong. Pull for the right," Renee said. She looked at her feet. The flames' reflections were flickering merrily upon the floor. She glanced at the reflection of the two candles; the left one was hidden by her shadow. "Pull for the right!" Renee repeated excitedly.
She lifted her hand, grasped the candle on the right side of the sconce and pulled it hard. It shifted downward, like a lever, with a loud click.

Nothing happened.

Fred stared at her doubtedly.

Suddenly, the floor panel directly beneath them opened and they fell through the hole into an unfamiliar room as the opening closed abruptly above them.
"Way to go," Fred said cheerfully as he felt around the pitch black room, "But where are we now?"

"I don't know," Renee said, feeling around the darkness. She finally stumbled upon an end table with some candles and clumsily lit them. She peered around the dimly lit room. It was a small, cluttered room with an old couch, a large, weathered arm chair, a dusty fireplace and an aged desk with paper and books resting upon it. There were chests, ship wheels and various items strewn about the room. There were no windows... and no doors.

"How do we get out of here?" Renee asked.

"Come here," Fred said.
He hoisted her up on his shoulders and she banged the ceiling where they had previously fallen through. It didn't budge. Minutes passed as they thoroughly examined the room. As throughout the rest of the house, they just found old maps that were of other lands they didn't recognize.

"I guess this isn't the cellar," Renee finally said and she sighed, "Sorry."

"I don't get it then," Fred said, "How is this a desired escape?

"We're trapped!" Renee said frantically, "We're stuck here forever!"

Fred laughed, "Geez, is it really THAT bad being stuck with me?"

Renee looked sleepily at him as she plopped down on the couch. "That's not what I meant," she said, shivering. She yawned as her eyes fluttered shut.
"I know," Fred said as he started a fire in the fireplace, "Just relax. You need some sleep."

"You're the best," Renee said between yawns, "Thanks."

"For what?" Fred asked as he turned around but he never received an answer... Renee had fallen fast asleep.
After searching the room for a while longer, Fred walked over to the desk and examined a thin, yellowed book laying on its surface. He picked it up and sat down in the large arm chair next to the fireplace. Fred read through it having no sense of the time. One hour had passed. When he flipped the last page, a small piece of parchment floated to the floor. Fred read the tiny lines on it three times through, thought deeply for a minute and then placed it safely in his pocket. He shoved the skinny book into his sweatshirt and suddenly shook Renee's shoulder. "Wake up!" he cried. "Wha?" Renee said as she sat up rubbing her eyes.

"Help me," Fred said as he kneeled beside the large, woven rug in the middle of the room, "Help me move it!"

"But why?" Renee asked as she kneeled down beside him and helped him roll the huge rug aside. She was answered not by Fred, but by what was beneath the rug.
A door was revealed as Fred pushed the floor beneath the rug down with his foot. It creaked as it opened and Renee felt the heat rapidly escape the room.

"A hidden door!" Renee said excitedly, "How did you know?"

"I found another poem," Fred smiled, "Come on!"

He began to go down the stairs into the dark hallway below. Renee peered down and saw nothing but dark, cold stone walls and she shivered. "Are you sure about this?" she asked aprehensively but Fred yelled "Come on!" and she followed.
Renee fell as the stairs retracted above them throwing her harshly to the cold, stone floor.

Fred laughed a little as he helped her up.
Fred lit a torch he was holding and Renee panicked, "We're trapped down here now! What do we do?"

"Come on, clumsy," Fred laughed, "Let's go!"

"Who are you calling clumsy?" Renee asked as she dusted herself off, "And where are we going?"
"Relax," Fred said as he took her hand in his torchless one, "Just trust me."

Renee smiled. For some reason, she did trust him.

He led her through the damp, stone hallways. It was freezing cold. Her body shivered but her hand felt extremley warm and she seemed not to care about the rest.
Fred finally led them into a dead end. It was a room with strange, foreign statues, barrels of gun powder, cannon balls and dulled, rusty swords. At the far end of the room was a sturdy wooden table and upon it lay a map. "This is it!" Renee said in excitement as she peered down at the map which displayed a well drawn image of the island, "This it it! You did it, Fred!"

"WE did it!" he said smiling at her as he picked up the map, "We found it!"

In her excitement, Renee jumped up and hugged Fred. She squealed with delight as he squeezed her and lifted her effortlessly off the ground. She kissed him quickly on the cheek as her feet touched the ground. He didn't say anything; just grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the room and back into the hallway.
Time passed. They seemed to be walking down the same hallway over and over again. "What was the end of the poem again?" Renee asked for the third time.

Fred repeated:
"Woman. Large. Behind her gain
The room of the beloved slain."

"Sooo we're looking for a fat woman so we can look at her behind and find a room of dead people," Renee said sarcastically.

"I told you I didn't figure out the last bit yet," Fred sighed, "Sorry."

"Sorry, I'm just frustrated," Renee apologised. Renee started to suggest, "Maybe we should take a break-"
But they rounded a corner and came to another dead end. A large tapestry hung on the wall. A beautiful red haired woman sat purposefully in a fancy chair. Renee ran up and pulled the tapestry aside and behind it, found large stone steps leading upward.

"Told you large doesn't mean fat," Fred laughed.

"This Vince guy was sure good at writing tricky poems," Renee commented as Fred followed her up the stairs without hesitation. The stairs seemed to go on forever but Fred and Renee finally reached a door that strangely led them into a large armoire. They walked into a tangle of clothes. The door fastened behind them unable to be reopened from their side. Fred and Renee opened the doors to the wardrobe and found themselves in a luxorious bedroom.
"Wow!" Renee gasped as she surveyed the large bedroom. She peered out one of the tall, elegantly curtained windows; white snow was still apparent against the black sky but now instead of fluttering, it was falling steadily. It looked like they were at the very top of the house.

"The room of the beloved slain, huh?" Fred said, "Do you think that meant this is his parents' room?"

"Dunno. I'm just glad there's no dead people in here," Renee laughed, relieved, "And that we found the map!" Renee did a little happy dance. She toppled over a bit, still extremely tired, and Fred urged her to sit down.
She sat down on the small lounge by the fireplace. "Let's just stay here," she said, "No use trying to find out where we are now. At least we know there's a door in this room."

"Okay," Fred agreed as he lit a fire, "We'll wait for the morning to tell the others."

"Let's just not tell them," Renee joked, "You and I will just go and leave them to the wolves." Fred laughed a little but almost wished she was serious. Fred started to explain to her about the book he had read; she yawned, curled up in a ball on the couch and tried to listen.
Fred turned to her after rambling for a few minutes and realized, once again, Renee had fallen fast asleep. Fred stared at her. He finally got to spend some time alone with her and she had not seemed dissapointed. And perhaps most importantly, they discovered their ticket off of the island. Fred wished Renee might not have been so tired so they could have stayed up through the night and talked... but perhaps there would be other evenings for that.

He noticed Renee shiver in her sleep and shift uncomfortably on the stiff lounge.
Fred gently picked her up. She wrapped her arms lazily around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder as he carried her to the bed.

Fred covered her up with the large blankets to keep her warm. Renee let out a comfortable sigh and he smiled.
He searched the room for a while. The books on these shelves were all about ship building, handling, and maintainance. Fred may have thought they were interesting on another day but that's not what he was looking for. He then found, tucked neatly underneath an empty glass on a low table near the end of the bed, a small folded piece of parchment. He sat down on the lounge by the crackling fire, unfolded the parchment and read the neatly written poem:

The day is here that I must go.
A son, a daughter? I do not know.
This house, this land belongs to you
But there is more for you to do.
To my child, I must tell
About the treasure beyond the well.
Prepare for a journey, a venture away.
Take who you trust; who will not stray.
It won't be easy and only the heir
Of the princess can journey there.
If you're not the one, do not try
To take on this quest or you will die.
I pray you will find this before it's too late.
My child, my blood: your riches await.
Fred pocketed it. Thanks for reading!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this installment! I really appreciate those of you who have stuck with me since the first part. I took some shots and wrote some of this one before I even did the fourth part so I'm sorry if it may be choppy; I'm hoping it all came together well enough. I like to get these up asap so I tend to rush the writing a bit; I'm sorry if I made some errors or seemed to ramble on. Well, let me know if you like it and please feel free to drop by my guestbook any time! \:\) Rach

absolutly brilliant. i loved it. i think that fred is definatly vince's son and i'm really happy for him that renee is starting to see him more. i thought that the first poem was talking about a door behind the kitchen fireplace cus fred was always seen by it, but the ballroom thing was a good idea too.\:cool\:
