Oasis Island 6

Finally; here it is (after two whole months! sorry, sorry!). Thanks for being patient with me. I really hope you enjoy this one.
The next morning Renee awoke to the strong smell of burnt wood; a scent that she was strangely beginning to love. She rubbed her eyes until the ceiling above her started to come into focus. Wiping some sweat from her brow, she lifted the warm blankets that were pressed heavily against her. Her sleep was comfortable and she felt well rested although she forgot for the moment where she was. Her eyes were still full of sleep as she sat up, rubbing them again, and spotted Fred asleep on the uncomfortable lounge by the ash filled fireplace.

Excitement suddenly rushed through her as she remembered the events of the previous evening.
She sprung up quickly from the bed, ran over to the lounge and immediately began shaking Fred. "Fred! Fred!" she exclaimed, still so tired she was only half aware of what she was saying, "The map! Let's go! The map! Map!"

Fred's eyes began to slowly open in response as he pushed himself up with what little strength he had that morning. "Calm down," he said with a grin as he looked up at her smiling face.

"Come on, we can go now!" she said excitedly as she struggled to help him up. She pulled him by the sleeve of his sweatshirt, subconciously taking in the scent of him and relaxing a little. He always smelled like burnt wood.

"Ow," Fred said as he rubbed his neck and tilted it from side to side, "My neck is killing me."
"You didn't have to sleep on the lounge, you know," Renee said blushing a little, "I mean just because it's really uncomfortable and all."

"Well it was better than the floor," he smiled, "Plus what kind of guy would I be to sleep with someone on the first adventure?"

Renee laughed. "Well, thanks for the bed then," she said, thinking of how sweet it really was. He just smiled back at her. She brushed some ashes off of the chest of his sweatshirt and then peered at his grin. "What?" she asked.

"Nothing," he replied with an airy tone, still smiling, "Just happy."

"Good," Renee responded, "Thank God we found that map, huh? Now let's go get ready!"
Renee ran to the wash room. As she splashed her face with the freezing cold water, a thousand things ran through her mind but one out did the rest: They were going home.

She peered out of the window and noticed that snow was still heavily falling, adding another layer to the few feet that already covered the ground. Renee didn't care; at this point, she'd walk through a tornado just to get home.
Fred and Renee met in the hallway and then made their way down to the great room only to find everyone sulking in the silent, gloomy air. Danny and Talia were sitting by the fireplace quietly staring out the window at the snow. Tatum was relaxing on the couch looking like she had a lot on her mind, too busy with herself to even notice anybody else was in the room. Deacon was sitting alone, slouched in a large arm chair and staring blankly at a wall with an incredibly goofy expression on his face. Fieval was enjoying his new favorite sport of chasing spiders under the bookcases. He immediately forgot about his current victum as Fred entered the room and he ran to greet him. "Good news," Renee said as they approached Danny and Talia by the fireplace.

Danny, realizing who it was, quickly stood up, knocking his chair into the wall, and faced her. "Where have you been?!" Danny said almost scolding Renee, "We couldn't find you guys! We didn't know what happened to you! We thought you two might have got lost outside or something!" Danny suddenly hugged Renee so tight that she struggled to breathe.

"Dan-ny re-lax," Renee said, "We f-ound the m-ap."

Danny let her go and continued to yell, "You should've told us where you were going! We didn't know wh-" He suddenly paused, realizing what she had said. "The wh-what?"

"The map," Renee said smiling as she stared at his awe-struck face, "We found it."
"I can't believe it!" Talia said fanning herself excitedly, "You did it!"

"Are you serious?" Danny said still in disbelief, "You found the cellar?"

"Yea," Renee and Fred smiled looking proudly at eachother. They told the extremely enthused Danny and Talia of their adventure.
"You really think we should go today?" Danny said as they discussed when to leave, "With the snow storm and all? And it's already late in the morning."

"The weather's just going to keep getting worse," Renee said anxiously, "Why wait?"

"Were you w-hic-waiting for me my miss Neree?" Deacon said goofily as he approached them.
"What?" Renee said confused as she turned to face him. He looked awful; like he had actually walked through a tornado. She asked, "What is wrong with you?"

"Not wrong. Right!" Deacon slurred, leaned in close to Renee and attempted to whisper, "You are rrright with me."

"Oh, Deacon!" Renee said as she backed away from the smell of his breath, "Are you drunk?"
"With lalalove!" Deacon stuttered. "So I say you-" he poked her in the shoulder- "and me-" he punched himself in the chest- "gotta get outta here-" he awkwardly gestured toward the door with his thumbs, nodding and smiling widely.

"Who the hell let him have alcohol?" Renee cried.

"He found the rum in the kitchen," Danny said dissaprovingly, "I found him in there this morning looking worse than he does now. I know-" Danny responded to Renee's expression- "That's hard to imagine. I don't even want to deal with him."

"I'm going to pack," Renee said quickly to the group. She looked at Deacon in disgust shaking her head and then walked passed him. She was still so mad at him from what he had done the other day and this certainly didn't help.
"Wait, please," Deacon turned her around, "Sorry, I know I'm ssstupid. But I love you!"

"Stop it, Deac!" Renee said in a strong hushed voice, her hands placed firmly on her hips, "You're embarassing yourself."

"Please don't leave me," Deacon pleaded as shiny tears formed in his blood-shot eyes.

"Stop it now!" Renee said harshly again as he continued to sob. She turned and left the room. Deacon followed her, whining all the way as she tried to ignore him.

Everyone else left to go pack too... except Tatum who hadn't yet reacted to anything that had just happened.
Danny hesitantly walked over to her. He uncomfortably scratched his head and cleared his throat, "Eh hem. Uh... Tatum?"

"What?" she said with no expression, not looking at him.

"We, uh, we have the map."

"I heard," she said calmly.

"Okay."
Uncomfortable moments of silence followed.

Danny finally spoke again, "And, uh, Tatum?"

"Yea?"

"Could I, uh, have the, um, the ring back... please?"

"Sure."

"Well?" Danny said expectantly after Tatum hadn't offered it.

"I threw it at you."
"Oh, yea. Right," Danny said starting to remember, "Where?"

"The kitchen."

"Okay. Um, thanks."

"It's not there anymore," she said as he started to leave.

"Where is it?" he asked turning back around.

"Deacon's wearing it," she said, "He said he married the rum this morning."
Danny couldn't decide wether or not to laugh at the thought of Deacon proposing to a barrel of rum. Danny used to think the things Deacon did were cool and funny and was proud to be his wing man. Now it was starting to seem immature and stupid; this wasn't high school anymore.

As he stood there in the uncomfortable silence with Tatum, he thought about all the times through high school when he would have given anything to be with a beautiful and popular girl like her and all of the times the girls like her would pass him over or take advantage of him. Then when he finally got what he wanted, he realized it actually wasn't what he wanted at all. There seemed to be nothing more to Tatum than her good looks and flashy clothes and for this reason, he couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for her. But they weren't right together... and it was offical now: they were broken up.

Danny was finally starting to realize that he needed to grow up.
"Watcha doin'?" Deacon said as he entered Renee's room.

"Would you stop following me, Deac?!" Renee said as a demand more than a request.

"I can't loose you- I mean lose you," Deacon said, his words still slurred, "I weally love you!"

"You're drunk!" Renee yelled as she turned to face him. She thought she knew Deacon well; they had, afterall, spent almost every minute together for an entire week. She really liked that Deacon. But after finding out what he had done with Tatum and the way he was behaving today, she couldn't even belive it was the same person. What else didn't she know about him? She said, dissapointed, "You don't even know what you're saying."
"I do though," he said, looking awkward, "It just sounds funny."

"You're an diot," Renee replied although she figured he wouldn't remember it anyway, "You shouldn't have done this! You're just making a fool of yourself! You look like hell." She added, "And you smell."

"I need help," he said, his glassy eyes staring at her with self-loathing.

"Yes. You do," Renee replied. She should have wanted to punch him in the face but instead she found herself wanting to take care of him. He was reminding her of her twin brother, Roman. "Come on, you idiot," she took his hand and pulled him toward the wash room, "Let's get you cleaned up."
When he was done packing, Danny went to Talia's room and asked if he could talk to her for a minute. They went outside onto the roof covered porch and looked out over the massive land behind the mansion, watching the snow rapidly fall.

"So, great weather, huh?" Danny said, awkwardly sarcastic.

"Yea," Talia shrugged, "But did you really just want to talk to me about the weather?"

"No," Danny stated. He paused, searching for his words, and then said, "I know it's been a real crazy week. And before we go home, I just wanted to say that I thought it was all worth it. I mean, I did meet you and all."

Talia flashed a shy smile. "Well, I think so too," she responded, blushing.
"I know we talked about starting to date and stuff," Danny said, now looking at her seriously, "And I'm glad we didn't in the house. So much happened, it probably would have gotten messed up anyway."

"Yea," Talia responded, "It seems like that happens when everyone else finds something out."

"Well, we probably shouldn't tell them then," Danny said, staring at his fingers twiddling nervously in his lap.

"Tell them what?" Talia questioned, slightly raising her eyebrows.

"That we're dating," Danny stated, "That is... if you still want to."
"Yea," Talia's smile was the biggest he had ever seen, "Yea, I'd like that." Danny mirrored her expression.

"Good," Danny simply said.

"You know," Talia started after a few moments of silence, "I feel silly how I acted so weird about the whole Renee thing. I don't want it to but it just makes me really uncomfortable when I think of you two together. You just get along so well. I just have to keep reminding myself that you're just friends and it happened a really long time ago."

Danny looked uncomfortable.

"I really like Renee," Talia continued, "I feel so silly for accusing you of having feelings for her and getting mad that you didn't tell me about you guys at camp before. So, I'm sorry."
"Water under the bridge, right?" Danny said, quickly putting his arm around her.

"Yea," Talia stated, "I agree that we shouldn't say anything about us. It might make the others act weird around us or try to break us up. Like what happened Deacon and Renee... although she deserved to know what he did to her."

Danny cleared his throat and slowly commented, "Well, it was before they were offically dating, you know?"

"What?!" Talia said surprised, "You're sticking up for him?"

"No," Danny replied, "I'm just saying that well, technically it happened before they were together."

"I guess," Talia shrugged, "I just hope she can move passed it. I can imagine how hard that would be for me to get over."

Danny swallowed hard.
Renee entered Fred's room to find him rummaging through a chest. "What are you doing?" she asked, looking over his shoulder.

"Oh," Fred said, surprised of her presence, as he quickly shoved something from the trunk into his sweatshirt and stood up, "Nothing."

"What did you just put in your sweatshirt?" She asked curiously, "Was that a picture?"

"Yea, it's nothing," Fred said but Renee looked at him as if thinking 'Yea, right!' and and he added, "I'll show you later. I promise."

"Okay," Renee said, instantly believing him, "Are you finished packing?"
"Almost," he said, "Are you?"

"Yea, I thought you'd be done since it took me so long," Renee explained, "I was helping Deacon clean up too. I couldn't just leave him like that. He's just being so stupid."

"What else is new?" Fred said in a sarcastic tone.

"Yea, I guess I shouldn't feel bad for him," Renee said, "It just reminds me of taking care of my brother like that; he used to drink a lot and he was just starting to get better before I went away. I just wish he would just go to college and forget about his silly rock band. I'm so worried about him but... anyway, I shouldn't be talking about that. You don't want to hear this stuff." She looked frazzled for a moment and then asked, "You do still have the map, don't you?"

"Well your brother's lucky to have someone who cares about him as much as you do," Fred smiled. "And of course I have the map," he said patting his over-stuffed pocket, "I wouldn't forget that. Now where did I put that little yellow book?"
"This one?" Renee asked as she picked it up from the bottom of the bed.

"Oh yea," Fred said quickly grabbing it from her, "That's it. Thanks."

"What is that?" she asked him curiously.

"It's the one I found in that secret office place last night," he explained and quickly added, "I'll show you later."

"Why not now?" Renee asked, a little suspicious.

"I promise I'll explain later when we have more time," Fred said, "You can trust me. Okay? I trust you."

"I know. I do trust you," Renee said truthfully, "Okay."

"Good," Fred said, smiling.
"What's that?" Renee suddenly asked as she spotted a slip of paper laying on one of the dressers.

Fred seemed to rush over to her in an attempt to get to it before she did, but she had already picked it up. "It's a poem that I found in that bedroom last night," he answered as he watched her quickly read it.

"Wow," Renee said when she finished, "An heir, huh? I don't really understand it but this sounds a bit dangerous. I wonder if they'll ever come here."

Fred shrugged.

"Well, I guess we better leave it here in case they do," Renee said as she placed it back on the dresser. She smiled at him, "Well, looks like we're ready. Let's go meet the others."

"Okay," Fred stated, "Lead the way."

Renee walked out of the door and Fred started to follow behind her. He quickly stretched his arm into the room, grabbed the poem and stuffed it among the mess of papers in his pockets.
They all met in the great room when they were finished getting ready. Talia and Danny were holding hands but they immediately let go when the rest entered the room.

No one heard Tatum say much that morning until she started complaining about how the snow would ruin her boots ("Quitcher bitchin'!" Deacon yelled at her, his speech still slurred.).

"Fred's got the map," Renee said, "We're ready to go!" They all headed outside without looking back.

Something in Deacon's backpack was clanking as he made his way out the door.
Fred lagged behind for a minute.

"You coming?" Renee said as she re-entered the room.

"Yea. It's just that-" Fred said as he looked around the room, "I'm kind of going to miss this place."

"Maybe we'll come back again some day," Renee said trying to cheer him up. "Well, come on now," she stated as she walked away to join the rest of the group.

"We will," Fred said as he blew out the candles, walked outside and closed the door behind him.
Renee couldn't see what Fred was doing, but she saw him run outside with Fieval and to the well up on the hill. Renee saw him pet Fieval and then seemingly fiddle with something on the well. "COME ON, FRED!" she yelled as the rest of the group waited, their feet buried deep in the snow, "WE'VE GOT ENOUGH WATER!"

He took a minute but then ran to Renee and they finally began their journey home.
"You know," Deacon said after they had been walking for a few hours, "We could make a $h!# load of money off of the history of that place."

"No one will believe us," Talia said.

"They will if we show them that map," Tatum added, suddenly excited at the mention of money.

Fred seemed uneasy as he tightened his grip on the map.

"Let's worry about that once we get back," Danny commented as he examined the old compass in his hand, "Which way now Fred?"

"Keep going east," Fred shouted over the wind.
Time passed. It felt like they had been walking for days but the sunlight hadn't even left them yet. Their feet were frozen and their shoulders were tired from carrying their bags.

"Are you sure you're going the right way?" Tatum would ask every time Fred pointed them in a different direction and Danny would lead them with his old compass.

"Yes!" Fred and Danny would answer together forcefully, tired of her questioning them.

Nobody noticed, but every once and while Deacon would pull a glass bottle out from his backpack and take a swig of its contents.
"Can we rest NOW?" Tatum asked for the sixth time, "My boots are killing me, my fingers are frozen and I can't feel my legs!"

"Quit complaining," Danny yelled, "We're all cold! It's not just you."

"Actually," Talia inserted quietly, "I could use a little break."
"That's n-not a bad id-dea," Renee said to Fred, shivering. He tried to look at her but the wind was blowing the snow so fast he could barely see her through the white blur.

"Alright, yea," Fred agreed as he looked at the map, "There's a clearing up ahead; we'll stop there!"
They came to the clearing a few minutes later. Deacon and Tatum rested on a log while Talia and Danny found a rock beneath a tree. They were surrounded by tall trees and were near the side of a large hill, so it blocked the fierce wind.

"We're nearly there," Fred said to Renee, "We definitely won't be there before dark though. Are you okay?"

"Y-yea," Renee said to Fred, shivering, "Y-youre d-doing a great j-job!"

"You're freezing!" he exclaimed as he examined her face, "Your lips are blue! Are you sure you're okay?"

She replied, trying to smile, "J-just a little c-cold."
Fred embraced her. She buried her face in his neck to shield it from the bitter wind. She could smell the scent of burnt wood still lingering on his skin. He bent his head down toward her and whispered in her ear, "Better?" His stubble tickled her cheek and his warm breath sent a shiver through her body as she nodded. She turned to face him and met his gaze, their mouths just inches away.

"RENEE!" Deacon suddenly yelled, "LOOK OUT!"

Startled, Renee quickly turned around and then let out a hurtling scream.
A pack of wolves stood just yards away from them in the clearing. Danny grabbed Talia and dove behind the large boulder. Tatum screamed, falling off the log, and rolled down the hill behind her. Deacon, still shouting, ran to Renee and clumsily pushed her over into the snow. Renee screamed again as she struggled to get up. Her breath was heavy. She was confused and not sure what to do. She turned away from the pack and began to dart up the large hill that had been their shield from the wind. One wolf spotted her and quickly pursued his target. "DON'T RUN!" Fred yelled... but it was too late. She tripped.

The last thing she remembered was peering down the hill behind her and meeting the piercing yellow eyes of the beast that pursued her. She wanted to scream but she couldn't. It pounced up the hill and as it landed on top of her chest, she felt hot pain sear her cheek and then a sudden, blunt hit to her head... and all was dark.
..... "$h!#, I killed her!" Renee heard a familiar voice yell frantically as she started to come to, "$h!#, $h!#. She's dead, Isn't she?"

"Deacon, shut the hell up!" Danny yelled. "And give me that bottle," he added as he grabbed it from his grasp and sniffed it, "DEACON! I thought you left this all at the house! Give me your backpack!"

"No!" Deacon screamed as Danny finally pulled it off of his back.

Danny quickly unzipped it and suddenly screamed, "IT'S FULL OF RUM! Where is the water Deacon?!? Renee needs it!"
"Just get out a sleeping bag for now," Fred directed, "And we need to start a fire; her body is frozen."

Danny quickly went to work on starting a fire in the middle of the cave they finally found for shelter after Fred carried Renee for half of an hour through the storm. Talia quickly laid out a sleeping bag near it and Fred gently placed Renee on top.
She slowly opened her eyes. Her vision was blurry but she was grateful to see what she could of Fred's concerned face staring carefully down at her. Her face was frozen and it ached. The side of her head was pounding and she could taste blood as she licked her cold, dry lips.

"She's not dead!" Deacon suddenly yelled, noticing her eyes were starting to open, as everyone crowded around her.

"No thanks to you," Danny added to Deacon.
"What h-happened?" Renee stuttered in a raspy whisper as she grabbed her throbbing head, "I remember... the wolf."

"It saw you running and pounced on you," Fred tried to explain calmly, "And took a good claw at your face."

"Then I s-hic-saved you," Deacon cried loudly.

"No, he didn't," Danny quickly corrected him, "He went for the wolf but he punched you in the face instead. It knocked you out."

"Shhh," Deacon hushed Danny as he playfully hit him, "Don't tell her that part!"
"Deacon, shut up!" Danny yelled, "You almost got killed too! It's not funny! Now, go over there!" Deacon strangely obeyed and skipped over to the other side of the cave and began talking to a mossy rock. "Sorry," Danny added to Renee, "He replaced our water stash with rum and has been downing it all day. Blooming idiot."

Renee was confused. "Well then how did we get away?" she asked.

"Fred." Talia answered, "He raised his arms high above his head-" she immitated him- "and he roared really loud at it." Her arms flopped to her side as she added, "Then it just ran away."

"It's just a good thing they were a young pack," Fred commented, "They were just scared little kids."
Renee just stared at Fred adoringly who was now smiling brightly.

"Thank you," she muttered gratefully.

"I'm just glad you're okay," Fred commented, "You're face is pretty banged up but no serious injuries. The punch in the eye Deacon gave you is actually the worst."

Renee suddenly became extremley self-consious as she covered her face with her wet, dirty mittens. Fred pryed her hands away from her face and took off her sopping gloves. He enclosed her freezing hands in his.

"Not to sound creepy or anything," Fred stated a little uncomfortably as he scratched his head, "But you should really get out of those clothes."

"Well you failed on the not sounding creepy part," Renee laughed, "But you're right."
After they all changed out of their wet clothes, Fred led Renee to small pond in a part of the cave. A small waterfall streaming from an opening in the top of the cave made a calming noise that echoed through the cavern as it blended with the water. Renee bent down and glared at her rippling reflection. "Ew," she shuttered at her blood covered face staring back at her. She splashed the freezing cold water on her face and the red colored water dripped onto the stones below.

"We're just going to stay the night here," Fred said, "It's too dark out now anyway."
"My eye looks awful," Renee stated as she stood up, still cupping her hand over the bruise, "I look like a goon."

"Stop trying to cover your face," Fred said, pulling Renee's hand away from her eye, "It's not that bad." Renee smiled a little. "In fact," Fred added, "I like it."

"You like it?"

"It makes you look tough."

Renee laughed a little. "I don't want to look tough," she said looking down at her feet on the damp ground below.
"Well, you look beautiful too." Fred said as he gently lifted her chin up until her eyes met his. She smiled and slowly stepped closer to him placing her hand on his chest. They stared at eachother, smiling, with no sound except for the calming waterfall trickling beside them. "RENEE!" someone suddenly yelled as echoing footsteps rapidly approached them. Fred let out a frustrated sigh as Deacon loudly thumped toward them. Deacon screamed Renee's name again before tripping on a rock and stumbling into her.

"Way to ruin the moment," Fred muttered under his breath.
"I'm sorry, again, I'm sorry," Deacon stuttered as he pulled her into a hug, "I didn't mean to punch you. I just wanted to save you because I can't lose you."

Renee hugged him back uncomfortably, confused.

Fred rolled his eyes.
"Will you marry me?" Deacon asked.

"What?!" Fred cried in disbelief.

"I mean, I'm kind of already married to a barrel," Deacon stupidly continued, "But we can easily have that annulled."

Renee couldn't help but laugh. "You need to get something in you beside alcohol," she said as she pointed him back to their resting area, "Come on." She looked at Fred with an apologetic expression; he gave her a weak smile and followed them back to camp.
They cooked up a small dinner and relaxed around the warm fire for a while before going to sleep.

"Well, now you guys know we didn't make that wolf story up," Talia said refering to her and Danny's run-in with one.

"I believed you all along," Renee said to Talia, "One time at camp Danny and I saw a bear cub and, just like you said he did when you guys saw the wolf, he ran screaming like a girl."

"So did you!" Danny cried playfully back to Renee.

Renee laughed, "Yea, but I AM a girl!"
"Watcha doin'?" Deacon airily asked Tatum who appeared to be deep in thought.

"Shut up," she dully replied.

"My head feels funny," Deacon said while rubbing it.

"That's because it's completely empty," Tatum remarked, snobbishly.

"Woah, really?" Deacon responded stupidly. He sat down next to her and randomly commented, "I miss Renee."

"Renee sucks," Tatum rolled her eyes, "She'll pay for what she did to me."
"Hey, I got an idea," Deacon suddenly blurted, "You can tell her that you forced yourself onto me and then she won't be mad at me."

"I told you I'm not telling her that."

"But she doesn't believe me," Deacon childishly whined, "And that's what you did!"

"So?" Tatum responded, "Why do you like that skank anyway?"

"She's not a skunk," he replied, "She actually smells really good!"

"You're an idiot."

"No, Fred's the idiot," Deacon stared over at Renee talking cheerfully to Fred, "Being all heroic and $h!#. He's getting in the way."
Tatum raised her eyebrows and looked over at Fred and Renee. She slyly stated, "Well maybe I can help you there." "We should probably get some sleep now," Danny said, "I want to leave early tomorrow morning so we can get back before it's dark."

"We're not that far," Fred stated, "We're almost to the road and then we can just follow that to the bridge."

"We should have just stayed on the road in the first place," Talia said.

"Yea whose idea was that to take the dirt path anyway?" Danny said jokingly, knowing full-well it had been himself.

"Well I'm actually having a fun adventure," Fred happily commented. "And I'm glad I got to know all of you better," he added and smiled at Renee.
The next morning Danny woke them all up and forced them to get bundled up and ready before the sun was even up.

Danny caught Deacon drinking rum again from another large bottle that he had stashed in his coat pocket. He took it, smashed it and disposed of one more bottle he found hidden in Deacon's boot.

They made their way back to the clearing where Deacon, much to Danny's protests, began making snow angels.

"Can I see the map?" Danny asked Fred as he stared at his compass.

"Uhhh," Fred said, frantically patting his pockets and then paused.

"What?" Danny asked, a little alarmed.

Fred answered quietly, "I don't have it."

"WHAT?!" Danny cried.

"Don't panic," Fred said calmly, "I remember exactly where to go. I guess someone must have accidentally thrown it into the fire last night."

"It must be somewhere," Danny desperately said, "No one's THAT stupid." Danny looked down at Deacon who was singing a nursery rhyme while making a crooked snow angel and added, "Nevermind."
"Do you really think Deacon threw the map into the fire?" Renee quietly asked Fred, "And are you absolutely sure you remember where to go?"

"Yea, I know where I'm going. I made sure of it. Don't worry," Fred replied, "Just trust me."
"I can't believe you, Deacon!" Talia yelled at him, "Why did you throw the map in the fire?"

"I didn't do it!" Deacon exclaimed as it stood up, "It was Fred!" He faced them and ranted, "Or maybe Tatum stole it; she's the one who wanted to sell it and become a zillionaire!"

"Don't even bother listening to him," Danny commented, "He's still drunk."

"Now no one's going to believe us," Talia said, dissapointed, "We'll never be able to show them how to get to the house. They'll send us to the nutter house."

"Alright, let's go!" Fred shouted, "Danny, we're heading north east now!" and off they went.
They had been walking for several hours. It wasn't as cold as the day before once the sun came out. The snow was falling lighter and the breeze was chilly but calm. Deacon's head was throbbing as the effects of his binging were finally wearing off. He was struggling to remember any of the events that had happened the previous day. Fred carried Renee piggy-back for a majority of the trip as she was still weak from her incident the day before. They had been playing a rather easy game of eye spy (as there was not much but snow, rocks and trees) when Talia suddenly exclaimed, "Listen! I can hear the ocean!"

"You're right!" Renee cried as she jumped down from Fred's back, "Look ahead! Is that the bridge? What are those lights?" She broke into a run, Fieval happily racing ahead of her, and the rest of the group followed.
"RENEE!" someone screamed as she neared the road, "DAD! IT'S RENEE!"

"ROMAN!" Renee cried, tears suddenly spouting from her eyes.
They ran toward eachother and he squeezed her, picking her entire body off of the ground.

"I knew you were okay," Roman smiled as he lowered her to the ground and wiped the tears from her cheeks, "Twin's intuition."
Her dad jogged over and embraced her. A strong relief came over him as he finally held his daughter safely in his arms. He put his hands on her cheeks and examined her bruised face with a concerned expression but Renee couldn't stop smiling as happy tears streamed down her cheeks.

She was home.
Renee tried to explain as much as she could to her brother and father in the next few minutes as the others caught up with her and were greeted by the police with warm blankets.

"What happened to your eye?" Roman asked again.

"I'm getting to that," she said and explained the incident with the wolf and Deacon's mistake.

"Where is this kid?" Roman asked, immediately angered, "I'll kick his ass!"

"It was an accident, Rome," Renee assured him, "He was just trying to help."

"Is that the kid who did it?" Roman questioned her and pointed to Fred who was playing with Fieval.

"Oh no," Renee didn't realize how big she was smiling as she said, "He's the one who saved me."

"Ah ha!"
"Thanks for helping my little girl out," Renee's father, John, said to Fred when she introduced them, "It's certainly a pleasure to meet you."

"Nice catch," Roman whispered to Renee, "Bit nerdy... but I could learn to like him."

She punched him hard in the arm.
He smiled, "Good to have to back, sis." Police cars had blocked off the bridge since it was discovered that the group of college students were missing. There were search parties out on the island constantly including the friends and family members of the six who were lost. No one ever located the house and when Danny and Deacon tried to explain it to the police men, they just stared at them in a concerned disbelief. They had no way of proving it any more. Just then another car pulled up. It was Talia's two best friends. Melissa quickly ran to greet Talia, followed closely by her boyfriend Cyd. "We were so worried about you!" Melissa cried with watery eyes, "I can't believe it. I thought I was going to die without you."

"She was a mess," Cyd commented as he hugged Talia, "I told her I knew you'd be okay." He quickly added, "Thank God I was right."
After exchanging stories, Melissa awkwardly stated, "I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I bet it was awful being stranded with those baboons... especially Daniel."

"Not this again," Cyd muttered while rolling his eyes, "Just because you pretend he's this awful person when I'm around doesn't mean I don't know you still think he's the hottest thing alive."

"I do not!" Melissa argued.

"Guys," Talia interrupted to their surprise, "Are you really going to do this now?"

"You're right," Melissa stated, ashamed, "Sorry, Talia. We're just so glad you're back."

"It's okay," she carelessly shrugged, "Besides, it wasn't so bad."
"Hey babe, come here!" Danny suddenly yelled to Talia.

"Did he just call you babe?" Melissa asked her, shocked.

"Um, no." Talia quickly answered.

"Yes he did!" Melissa cried.

"He calls everybody that," Talia said and quickly changed the subject, "Well, I probably have to go talk to the cops. I'll ride with you guys when I'm done." She gave them a wink, and rushed to Danny.
"What's gotten into her?" Melissa asked Cyd suspiciously.

Cyd shrugged. "I don't know," he said, "I'm just glad she's back and in one piece."

"Yea but," Melissa exclaimed, "He called her babe! You heard that, right?"

"Yea, so?" Cyd shrugged again.

"She normally would have been insulted," Melissa replied, "Something about her has changed."
"Don't go forgetting about me now that you're back with your friends," Danny said.

"I couldn't if I tried," Talia responded. Danny blushed. "No, seriously," Talia added, "Melissa won't stop talking about how awful it must have been for me to be stranded with a jerk like you."

Danny laughed. "Well Deac and I are riding back with the police," he explained, "They called our parents and we're meeting them there. So I guess I'll see you back in history class next week."

"Are you and Deac okay now?" Talia asked curiously.

"Yea," Danny answered, "I know he's an idiot... but he's my best idiot... and he'd be lost without me."

Talia laughed and nodded. Danny wanted to grab her and kiss her goodbye but because of the risk of their secret relationship being discovered, he gave her a long hand shake and said, "See you later, buddy." He smiled and winked at her before walking away.
"Come on, Deac!" Danny yelled as he stood by the cop car.

Deacon ignored him as he argued with Tatum, "Give me back the map!"

"For the last time, I didn't steal it!" Tatum yelled back, "You threw it in the fire!"

"I definitely don't remember doing that!" Deacon retorted, "I'm not that thick!"

"You are when you're drunk!" Tatum screamed, "And now everybody thinks we're crazy!"

"Guys!" Danny yelled, "Come on! Our parents are waiting!"

"I can't believe I have to ride back with you," Tatum complained to Deacon as they obeyed Danny's orders.

Deacon yelled at her, "Well, I can't believe you took the map from us just so you could hog all the money!"

"I DIDN'T TAKE IT!" Tatum screamed as they all got in the car and headed over the bridge.
Fred was standing alone the entire time. He had no one to greet him with hugs and happy tears. He had no one to meet at the police station. He had nobody who worried about him while he was gone and nobody to be happy he was back. He felt awkward and alone. "Hey Fred!" Renee ran over to him, "Look, I was wondering if you wanted to drive back with us. My family would love to meet you. I'm sure my mum will have hot cocoa ready for us when we get there."

"I don't want to intrude-" Fred started but Renee interrupted.

"Nonsense. There's always room at the Speeler house," Renee said. She looked down at her feet and added quietly, "Plus, I really want you to stay with me."

"Well when you put it that way," Fred smiled, "How can I refuse?"

Renee looked up at him, smiled and gave him a big hug.
She quickly backed away after realizing she smushed something that was sticking awkwardly out of his jacket. "Oops. What's that?" Renee asked. She straightened it out, started to push it back in his coat and then suddenly gasped, "Fred... is that-? Is that the map?"

"Yea," he said in a whisper, "I'm sorry I lied, Renee. I have a good reason. I promise."

She looked at him suspiciously for a moment... and then smiled.
"It's okay," she said, "I trust you." Thanks for reading!

Well, I'm so glad I finally got this up. I did most of the screens months ago and just wrote it all over the weekend so I hope it all flows. And I didn't spell/grammar check so my apologies as I'm sure there are errors in there somewhere. Well, I sincerely hope you like it and I can't wait to hear your comments! \:\)Rach

Wow. These seriously come out at the best times. I always get so excited when I see a new part is out. And I think I was right about that well thing...since he checked the well before leaving. Woot. And he was telling Renee that he "trusted her" (take who you trust! ;D ). I know that the story was long but reading it made it seem so short. That's definately a good sign. And I love how you add humor into the serious parts. I definately can't wait until the next part comes out. I can only imagine what's going to happen then. ^^

Is Tatum still gonna try to break Renee and Fred up? Talia and Danny shouldn't keep their relationship a secret now that they're home. Haha! Deacon is such a funny drunk!
