This second part of the "To Love A Soldier" story picks up after Thomas has gotten home from his deployment to the Desert and illustrates the trials and tribulations that the young couple face trying to adjust to family life again.

When someone is sent off to war and is made to endure combat conditions and experience horrors that they never could have dreamed of.....it changes a person. Sometimes, that person is able to regain their sense of self and return completely to the normal everyday things. But other times, a part of them is left in the war zone and it takes an enormous amount of love to bring them all the way home.
After being in the war for fifteen months, Thomas and Jessica were enjoying their time together once again. Their love for each other was just as strong as it ever was, even though they had been separated for so long. "Honey, I am so happy to have you home with me. It's been too long since we were able to just relax on the couch and watch TV together."

"I know....it's heaven."

"I'm so thankful that you made it home safely when their are so many other wives out there who aren't as lucky. I can't even imagine what I would have done if something happened to you."

"Well let's not dwell on that. I DID make it home just like I promised and now we can do all those things that we planned."
Jessica began to notice that Thomas was having some trouble falling asleep but she didn't think too much about it. She decided that he probably just needed to get his sleep cycles straightened out after being in a different time zone for so long. She would often wake up in the morning to find Thomas sitting up in the chair looking very tense. "Baby, what's wrong? Why are you sitting in the chair rather than being in the bed with me? Will you please talk to me?" "I'm ok. I just sometimes have these dreams and I think I'm back over there. It helps if I get up so I don't have to think about it anymore. When I'm awake, I'm really home, but when I sleep, it feels like I'm there again. Please don't worry about me sweetheart....I am ok....I promise....I love you so much." Daniel was growing more every day and Thomas and his son were quickly becoming best buddies. Thomas was teaching his son how to play catch....something that his own father was never able to teach him since he was killed in Vietnam when Thomas was just a baby. Thomas vowed that he would be the father that he never had. He would never leave his son again. As Thomas and Daniel were outside playing, the phone rang and Jessica answered it. It was Sgt Buchanan. "I wanted to call and let you all know that Carillo died tonight. He's been in the military hospital ever since the attack in the Desert where he sustained severe burns over his entire body. He fought hard, but the wounds were just too great for him to survive."

"Thank you for letting us know Sgt Buchanan. His family will be in our prayers. I will tell Thomas and please let us know when the services will be....we'd like to be there." She hung up the phone.

"Oh God help me....this is going to be awful to tell Thomas that his friend died. I know how close he was to Carillo."
"Hi Mom." "What are you guys up to?" "Oh nothing much.....dad was just teaching me how to throw a baseball. He's really good ya know?" "I know sweetheart.....your dad is quite the athlete." "Daniel, will you give us just a minute....I need to talk to your dad about something." "Sure mom." "Honey, I brought you in here to tell you that Sgt Buchanan just called....Carillo died tonight. He said the wounds he suffered in the Desert were too severe and he wasn't able to survive them. I asked him to let us know when the services will be so that we can go."

"Carillo is dead? But we got him out of there....he was supposed to be ok."

"I know honey.....and he fought really hard.....but he just couldn't overcome the injuries....I'm SO sorry honey....I know how much he meant to you."
Jessica wasn't sure what happened after she told Thomas about Carillo, but suddenly he ran back outside and began acting very strange.....punching the air....yelling. She and Daniel stood by and watched as Thomas appeared to have a breakdown. Thomas screamed out loud...."WHY!!......he was supposed to be ok....we got him out of there!" "No, it wasn't supposed to happen like this. I promised him that he would be ok....that I would get him back to his family. He had a new son too.....we used to compare pictures and talk about all the things we'd do with our sons. I PROMISED HIM!!!" "How am I going to face Sylvia at the funeral when I promised that I'd keep him safe? It was my responsibility to make sure that all my guys made it home and I lost two while we there and now Carillo. I failed them.......I failed them all! It should have been me!" Jessica and Daniel were crying too watching as Thomas ranted against the injustice of it all.

"Baby....it wasn't you fault....none of it was. Please don't talk like that. You did your best over there and no one thinks that you failed them. If they were here...they would tell you the same thing....it's NOT your fault! You guys were in a terrible situation and you did everything you could."
Thomas went into the house and got in the shower. He needed some private time to absorb what he had just heard. Logically, he knew that Jess was right.....it wasn't his fault....it was the bad guys over there who killed them. But somehow, he still felt responsible. After he got out of the shower, Thomas found Jessica and saw that she had already gotten ready for bed. He gave her a hug and told her, "Thank you so much for believing in me."

"Thomas, I love you....and I will be here for you ok? Just remember that none of this was your fault."

"Thank you for saying that Jess."
"Sweetheart, I have something to tell you......I'm pregnant."

Jessica was worried at first that this wouldn't be a good time to spring this on Thomas, but after more consideration, she decided that this was the best time. He needed something positive to focus on......something good to look forward to. She really hoped that maybe a new baby would help him get past all the bad memories of the Desert and give him a renewed sense of hope for the future.
"We're going to have a baby?" "Yes, darling.....we are." "I'm going to be a father again and this time I'll get to be here with you throughout the whole thing?" "Yes, honey.....we will be together this time.....you'll be here to see me get all fat and ugly and grouchy.....and you will be here when the baby comes."

"Jess, I love you so much! And I don't care how fat and grouchy you get....you'll always be the most beautiful woman in the world to me."
Later, when the two went to bed, Jess hoped that Thomas would be able to sleep more soundly with dreams of a new baby instead of all the horrible dreams he'd been experiencing lately. After Jessica fell asleep, Thomas got up and slipped outside into the cold fall night. He couldn't stop thinking about Carillo and he got on his knees and prayed that Carillo's family would have the courage and strength to get through this terrible time. After he prayed, he got angry......angry at the lives that had been lost....angry that he couldn't seem to let go of the horrors he had experienced.....and angry at himself for failing his men. He wanted revenge for his men that had been lost. He wanted to go back to the Desert and find the people who did this. He knew it wasn't rational, so all he could do was to get his anger out here......now.....by punching at the unseen enemies that had infiltrated his heart and his mind. The dreams of the Desert often invaded Thomas's sleep and tonight was no different. After he finished raging against the world, he found himself down by the waterfront in the middle of the night. He thought about all the wonderful times he and Jess had had down here on the beach, but right now, he just felt alone, and longed for the companionship of the guys in his unit. It's strange how a person develops such a strong bond with the people who go through hell with you....but it's a bond that is stronger than most normal relationships. He thought back to his 15 months in the Desert....all the good times and bad times with the guys. He thought about Manning, Davis, and Carillo and why they had to die. And why did he survive when they didn't? None of it made any sense. He was still standing there looking out over the ocean when the sun came up. He didn't feel like he had any more answers than he did when he came down here. Jess found him down on the beach and said, "Honey how long have you been out here?" "Oh I don't know.....awhile. I just couldn't sleep and it's peaceful down here." "It's freezing out here though. Why don't you come in and let me make you some coffee." "Thanks baby.....have I told you lately how much I love you?" "Well not in the last several hours!" Winter came with a vengeance dumping a foot of snow on the Combs' household. Jessica and Thomas had gone to Carillo's funeral and life was moving along. Thomas made it a point of dropping by the Carillo household often to check on Sylvia and the kids. They seemed to be doing all right, but it was heartbreaking for Thomas to see those two little boys growing up without their dad. He tried to spend as much time with Daniel as possible, but thoughts of the Desert were never far away. Thomas began to feel as if he would never be completely "home." Later that evening, Daniel begged his dad to come outside and build a snowman with him.

"Dad....please....the snow is just right....you gotta see it......come out here."
"Over here dad....this is the perfect spot."

Thomas went outside and wanted to build a snowman with his son, but something inside of him was holding him back. He seemed to have lost his joy for life and the all the beautiful things in it. He felt paralyzed to do anything about it.
Instead, he apologized to his son and told him that he didn't feel well and might be coming down with a cold. He went back inside and got into his pajamas and cried at the window as he watched his son build a snowman without him. "I'm so sorry Daniel. I wish I could be the father that you deserve." After building the best snowman ever, Daniel was watching Brutus and Sarah playing together. They were the two new dogs that had joined the Combs' household. It seemed that ever since his dad got back from the Desert, he kept bringing home pets for Daniel. Of course, Daniel didn't mind because he loved animals, but sometimes he just wanted to spend time with his dad. He suspected the animals were his dad's way of trying to make up for lost time. Now they had two dogs and one cat and Daniel wondered if they would be getting any more. The next morning, Jessica gave Thomas a book on "Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome." She had been to the bookstore and bought a couple of books on the subject and was convinced that this was what was going on with her husband. She was reading excerpts from one of the books while Thomas skimmed the other one. "Honey, I really think this may be what's going on with you. You're not sleeping well, you're having nightmares, you won't interact with your son, and you've basically cut yourself off from everyone and everything that you love. I really want you to read these books and see if you think it fits. If it does, I want you to make an appointment to see a doctor about it so that you can begin to get better." Even though Thomas had told Jess that he would read the books and get help, he got online instead to chat with a bunch of women that he didn't know. He knew he shouldn't be talking to these women, but he felt a certain sense of relief talking to them......they didn't know his story.....they didn't know how messed up in the head he was......he could be anybody he wanted to be. With Jess, he always felt like she was watching him to make sure he wasn't going to go off the deep end. He felt smothered even though he loved her and knew she was only trying to help. He couldn't help the way he felt. When Jessica noticed how long her husband had been on the computer, she decided to see what he was doing and was shocked to find him messaging with other women. "Thomas....who are you talking to?" "Why are you spying on me? Ever since I got home, you watch me all the time! Can't I ever get any privacy?" "Thomas....I just love you so much and I'm worried about you. Why would you be talking to other women? I thought you loved me? Have you stopped loving me? We have a baby on the way for heaven's sake!" "Oh my God...what have I done? Jess....I DO love you....more than anything in this world and I never meant to hurt you. None of those women mean anything...I just talk to them to escape the pain. I'm so sorry baby." "I'm just so messed up right now that I don't know what I'm doing. Sometimes I feel trapped and like I want to go back over there and kill them all. I know it's wrong but I don't know what to do. It's like I have this demon inside of me and I don't know who it is and I can't seem to control it." "Will you ever forgive me?" "Yes, Thomas...but you need help. I want you to call the doctor right now and make an appointment to see him. I can't live like this. WE can't live like this." "Uh....yeah....hi.....this is Thomas Combs....and I need to set an appointment with Dr. Webber as soon as possible."

"Yeah....Monday, January 19th at 9:00am would be fine. Ummm...what? Oh...my number here is 555-7978. I will see you then."
"What am I having a problem with? Well....ummm....my wife thinks....I think I might be suffering with PTSD.....post-traumatic stress disorder.....yeah, I just got back from the war several months ago and am still having problems. Ok, thanks....I'll be there on the 19th."

He hung up the phone and actually felt a sense of relief at finally facing something that he had been avoiding for months.
"Thank you Thomas for doing that.....for taking that step toward healing. I just want us back....I want our family back. The baby will be here soon and I want him or her to be welcomed into this world by a father who is whole and healthy." "I want that too Jess." When Thomas left the room, Jessica thought of something that might cheer him up. She decided to call his buddy Michael Cook, who served with him in the Desert, and invite him over for dinner. Maybe seeing an old friend would do Thomas some good.

When Michael answered the phone, he was thrilled to hear from her and readily agreed to come over for dinner. He said that the was looking forward to seeing them both.
Later that evening when Michael arrived, Thomas was so happy to see him again. Michael was still on active duty so he wore his uniform and Jesscia hoped that wouldn't set off her husband and cause him to start wanting to go back to the Desert again. She never knew what might trigger him these days.

"Man, it's good to see you. How have you been?"
"Hey I'm doing well Sarge.....just living the dream." "How come we didn't see you at Carillo's funeral?" "Well when all that happened, I was out of town for a couple of weeks with my girlfriend Erica. We had been planning this cruise for ages and the day after we left, was when I got word about Carillo. We were already out on the high seas somewhere and I couldn't get back. I know Carillo would have understood. He always loved to live vicariously through us single guys. I made sure to tell him all the details of my dates whenever I could. I know he loved Sylvia and the kids, but you know how you married men are......always wanting to hear about the other side."

"Yeah....I remember how Carillo enjoyed hearing about your dating escapades. Anyway, the funeral service was beautiful....he would have liked it. It was really hard seeing Sylvia and the kids though. They looked so lost. It broke my heart."
"Jessie.....how are you? Thank you so much for inviting me over tonight. You look as beautiful as ever. Is this guy being good to you?"

"Of course.....Thomas is always good to me. He's the best. I'm so glad that you were able to come tonight. It's so good to see you again."
"Well make yourself at home man.....Jess will keep you company while I prepare my specialty."

"You're cooking? Man I should have brought take out!"

"Haha.....always the wise cracker! You know if it hadn't been for my cooking, you guys would have starved in the Desert."

"Yeah yeah....I remember. You're cooking aint half bad."
While Thomas went into the kitchen to prepare dinner, Jessica took the opportunity to try and talk to Michael about what was going on with her husband. She hoped that maybe he would be able to provide some insight to her.

"Michael......Thomas isn't doing so well. He keeps having nightmares and can't sleep. And now he's talking to women on the computer when he thinks I won't see him. I encouraged him to make an appointment with a doctor and that's scheduled for January 19th, and I really hope that helps him. How are you doing? Are you having similar difficulties?"
"Jessie, I'm sorry to hear that. You have to realize that what we went through over there was something that civilians can't possibly understand. And Sarge is the type of guy who takes everything very seriously. He felt responsible for all of us and because some of us didn't make it home, it's hitting him really hard. He'll be ok though. Just hang in there with him and keep loving him......that's all you can do. I've had a few nightmares, but overall, I'm doing ok." "Michael.....you're not boring my wife with war stories are you?"

"No way Sarge.....you know me better than that."

"I know....that's what worries me!"
After dinner, Thomas and Michael went outside to play in the snow. The two army buddies fell back into their old roles easily and enjoyed "shooting" each other with snow grenades. "I nailed you!"

"Yeah, well just you wait......retaliation is on its way!"
"Thank you so much for coming. I think it did Thomas good seeing you tonight. So what do you and Erica have planned for the holidays?"

"I think we're going to go over to her parent's house on Christmas Eve and then spend the night. She's never spent Christmas away from them, and my parents live too far away, so I agreed to go with her. What are you guys doing?"

"Well, we're just planning on staying home. The baby is due on New Year's, so we really can't travel anywhere. I think it'll be nice having just the family home for Christmas. Thank you again for coming and have a very Merry Christmas."

"Merry Christmas to you too and stay in touch. Let me know if you need anything ok?"

"I will. Good-night."

"Good-night."
On Christmas Eve, old man winter dumped another foot of snow on the neighborhood. Daniel was thrilled because he loved going outside to play and Sarah was all too willing to accommodate him. He was spending more and more time alone or with the dogs since his dad never wanted to do anything. He had never really known his dad that well since he had been gone when Daniel was born. So in his young mind, this was normal. He often thought that it would be nice to have a dad who liked to do stuff, like his friend Ryan. Ryan's dad always like to play....he was a like a big kid. Jessica preferred staying indoors while it was so cold outside and she constantly battled her pregancy cravings. She often gave in and ate a whole bag of cookies. But after eating all day, she felt guilty and decided to work out. The doctor had told her that it was ok as long as she didn't over do it. She was getting so big now and the baby was due in a week, but she still wanted to try and stay sexy for Thomas.....if that were possible at this stage. "How's my sexy little momma doing? You didn't over do it with your workout did you?"

"No, honey....I didn't over do it. I just feel so fat and ugly right now that any exercise helps."

"You aren't fat and ugly! I love seeing you pregnant. I missed that with Daniel and I'm so thankful that I'm here this time to experience this with you." "Me too honey.....me too."
Later that afternoon, she and Daniel sat down in front of the Christmas tree to talk. "So what do you think Santa will be bringing you tonight?"

"I don't know. I hope he brings me a lot of toys! I'm also wishing for a baby sister. I think it would be cool to have a sister to boss around."

"Well whatever it is.....a brother or a sister.....you're going to be a great big brother!"
"Hey, what are you guys talking about?"

"Daniel was just telling me that he wants a baby sister for Christmas."

"I hate to tell you buddy....but the baby isn't due for another week. Maybe it'll be our New Year's Eve present."
As if on cue, Jessica suddenly stood up and said, "Uh oh....I think my water just broke."

"Yay.....my baby sister is gonna be here for Christmas!"
"Oh Jess....it's probably just one of those fake contractions again. Just relax and breathe and it will go away."

"Noooooooo.....I think the baby is coming NOW!"

Thomas sat there and remained calm because he had seen Jessica have the false contractions several times and he wasn't going to let himself get worked up over nothing this time.
"Yep....it's coooooommmming now!"

"Oh my gosh....what should I do?" At that point, Thomas got a little uneasy because he realized that maybe this wasn't another false alarm.

"Dad....do something!"
After the birth of the baby, Jessica held her and introduced her to the rest of the family.

"I told you it was going to be a girl."

"You were right Daniel......what shall we name her?"

"I want to name her Chloe."

And so it was that little Chloe Combs made her appearance on Christmas Eve just as Daniel had wished for.
"Hi Chloe....I'm your dad....it's so nice to finally meet you." "Can I hold her?" "Of course you can sweetheart....she's your daughter." "Wow, she's so small. I never got to hold Daniel when he was this small. What an incredible feeling...holding such a tiny baby and knowing that we made her. Honey, I'm so sorry that I wasn't here for you when Daniel came."

"It's ok sweetheart. Remember....Daniel came early too. At least you're here now. That's what matters. We're finally a family.....and we're together on Christmas. All of my prayers have been answered."
"Jess...take her back. I'm afraid I'll hurt her."

"Baby you won't hurt her....she's not going to break."
"You don't understand Jess.....these hands have killed men! How can I trust myself holding our beautiful daughter with such evil hands!"

Thomas broke down and cried. He wanted to be whole and healthy for his family....for his new daughter....but he didn't trust himself to hold the baby right now.
"Thomas, you are NOT evil. You did what you had to do over there. The lives of your men depended on doing the things you did. But it's not who you are. You are the most loving, gentle man I've ever known. You're just lost right now. But once you start seeing Dr. Webber, I believe that you can find your way home to us." "Well I've got to bathe Chloe."

"Would you mind if I did it Jess?"

"Of course.....are you sure you want to?"

"Yes, very much. I want to start right away being a father to my daughter. I'm just going to have to fight through these feelings I have and hopefully, I'll be ok. I would like it if you'd stay close by just in case I need you...ok?"

"Sweetheart, I will be with you every step of the way."
Thomas bathed Chloe whiled Jessica watched and her heart was filled with a love for him that was beyond anything she'd ever known. She knew how difficult it was for him to bathe their tiny baby and yet here he was.....doing it.....and doing it so lovingly and gently. She hoped and prayed that it would also wash any insecurities he was feeling about handling the baby. "Chloe, I promise you....I WILL be the dad you deserve. I'm kinda messed up right now, but I'm going to get help, so you'll have to be patient with me..ok? I love you and your mom and your brother so much and we're a family and I'm going to do whatever it takes so that I am worthy of you all." Jessica was touched by her husband's words and his commitment to them. She began to feel a renewed sense of hope that things would be fine. But then Thomas just layed Chloe down on the floor and ran out of the room. Jessica cried and thought, "We've still got a long way to go. I hope and pray that I can get my husband back. Chloe, your daddy loves you...he really does......we just have to help him ok?" Several weeks later, Thomas went for his first appointment with Dr. Webber. Dr. Webber was world renowned for his work with soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He had a state of the art facility that included a sleep lab to address the issues many returning soldiers had with sleeping and nightmares.
Thomas took a seat in the waiting room and picked up a newspaper. He was having trouble concentrating on what he was reading though, because all he could think about was whether or not Dr. Webber would be able to help him. Over the past month, he had let his hair and beard grow out and was having a lot of difficulty connecting with the new baby. He had said that he wanted to change everything about himself including the way he looked. He felt like if he could changed the way he looked, he might somehow feel different on the inside. Jess had been great. She was always so patient with him but he felt guilty for not being there for his family when they needed him. When he was finally called back into Dr. Webber's office, he was pleased to meet a man about his own age. Dr. Webber had a soothing voice that made Thomas trust him and want to talk. Dr. Webber told him that this first appointment would basically be getting to know each other and coming up with a plan for treatment.

"I was in the first Desert conflict ten years ago so I do understand what it was like over there. I also had some difficulty when I came home and subsequently lost my wife and kids because she couldn't deal with all I was going through. Since that time, I have dedicated my life to researching PTSD and finding new ways of helping soldiers deal with it. I am telling you all this so that you will know that I am not your typical doctor. I do have a medical degree, but I also have years invested into the study of post-traumatic stress. Some of my methods may seem different, but I can assure you that they do work."
When Thomas began to talk, the floodgates opened and everything came forth in a rush....all the pent up emotions....all the guilt....all the sorrow.

"It's like....I can't trust anyone....not even myself and I get triggered over the least little things. I have a new baby at home and I can't even trust myself with her."
"Thomas...listen to me...it's ok to cry and let it all out, but I want you to remember something. How you're feeling right now is the PTSD and it's perfectly normal after what you went through. Your brain has been physiologically programmed to be on high alert and it's going to take some re-training to get it to relax and be able to enjoy life again." "I just want to feel normal again Doc." "And you will....you have my word on that. I want you to stop at the front desk and let Sydney schedule your next apointment. I think a night in the sleep lab might be a good idea too. That way we can monitor your sleep patterns and see if we can figure out ways to help you with your nightmares and lack of sleep. We will get you through this....you just have to trust me...ok?" "Thanks Doc.....this is the most hopeful I've felt in months." "Thomas, just stick with the plan and we'll get you all the way home. I will see you soon." When Thomas got home from his first appointment with Dr. Webber, he felt a renewed sense of hope for the future. He vowed to stick with the plan that Dr. Webber layed out for him and promised himself that he would do whatever it took to be the man that Jessica married and be a good father to his kids. They deserved more than he had been giving them lately.

THE END

**Stay tuned for part three and see how Thomas does in therapy and whether or not he'll be able to overcome his demons and live the fairytale life that he and Jessica had planned.**
