This is the story of Bo Bross. The main character of the new TSR challenge "The Joy of Painting" created by STEVE BONHAM.
In the previous chapter I gave the readers the opportunity to steer the course of the tale by deciding who Bo should date.
I tallied up the votes and this is the story that emerged from the results.
Part 2 is significantly longer than my other stories. Since so many people left amazing feedback and suggestions, I had a lot to work with and took more time on this installment.

You can find Part 1 on my profile but here's a short RECAP of the previous part to get you up to speed.... Bo Bross is 45 years old. His wife died ten years ago.
ART is his true passion. He used to have a television show where he taught viewers how to paint "Happy little trees"
But the show was cancelled.
He was forced to get a job in the science career as a lab researcher to survive. His life had become miserable monotony and he sank into a deep lonely depression.
But all of that changed when he signed up for an internet dating service and got a haircut.
These actions caused him to meet NATALIE AND INGRID.
He developed feelings for BOTH of these beautiful women and now he is utterly torn. Ingrid is an attractive 34 year old woman.
She works as an executive producer for a local television station. She is divorced with 2 children. She is lonely.... just like Bo.
She is an empathetic listener, straight forward, and very mature. They met online through an internet dating service.
Their first date ended in a deep kiss. Natalie is a lovely and alluring 19 year old girl.
She is a sophmore at Sim State University studying ART. She also worked part time at a hair salon until she was FIRED.
She is lively, inspirational, fun-loving and kind. She is also a great conversationalist. Bo met Natalie at a hairsalon.
They formed a friendship that led her to his house one night.
After seeing a portrait he had painted of her, she asked for Art lessons. When he agreed to be her teacher...
She climbed onto his lap to give him a hug. She whispered that she wanted to kiss him.
Bo was overwhelmed. He wanted to kiss her more than anything. But he didn't know if her affection was just due to all the drinks she had consumed.
Plus, he is old enough to be her father! When we left off....
Natalie's soft lips were inches from Bo's...
Bo was shaking and utterly torn...between logic and desire.
He was faced with a difficult decision. ...A decision that Natalie made for him.
Before Bo could utter a word of protest, her lips came crushing down on his.
It was the most intense kiss of his entire life.
His breath was taken away and it was as though time had completely stopped. "Whoah! Whoah..whoah..whoah!...", Bo cried out after the initial shock.
He began to sit up and pull out of her embrace.
"Stop...Natalie...slow down!..", he continued "We can't do this!..." "What's wrong?", Natalie asked. Her eyes filled with the pain of rejection. "You don't like me?" "NO!, Natalie... that's not- ", Bo stuttered "I like you a lot. You're a lovely young woman. You're just too YOUNG and you've been drinking. I can't take advantage of you like this. It isn't right!" "But I'm an adult Bo! I'm NOT a child! why are you treating me like one?! " Natalie protested. He could tell by the way her voice trembled and slurred that she was NOT thinking clearly.
"Natalie...", Bo whispered
"If you don't like me...JUST SAY IT!", she said her voice rising "Don't play the age card. Age is just a number! You know that as well as I do!"
"I'm sorry Natalie", Bo continued "I can't..." Bo stood up and turned away from her.
He closed his eyes tightly. This was tearing him up inside. He couldn't collect his thoughts. He was a mess. "Well, I can't very well leave....", Natalie slurred "...I just need to lay down...I'm too drunk to drive... I'll sleep on the sofa..."
"I have a guest room", Bo said "Please. You are welcome to stay there. Follow me" Bo led Natalie to the guestroom.
She didn't say anything, but her eyes did.
They just stood there for a long moment gazing at eachother.
That bed was right there... It would be so easy for them to fall into eachother's arms and collapse into that bed kissing...
But He turned away from her and walked out. It was so hard for Bo to sleep.
He just lay there in his room above the sheets fully dressed with the lights on for a long time.
He could still feel her kiss on his lips... Hear her gentle sigh...feel her embrace...
It was torture to know that she was just in the other room, only a wall inbetween them.
What was he going to do about all these feelings he had for her? How can he make them go away? THE NEXT MORNING...
Bo woke up with a start from the sound of the doorbell ringing.
His head was pounding. He heard the front door open and the sound of two women talking downstairs.
Who was down there?
The fog slowly began to lift and bo remembered...
......Natalie! But who was the OTHER person downstairs? Bo got dressed and went downstairs.
He was surprised to see INGRID talking with NATALIE!
He froze.
"oh no no no no", he thought. He felt like his feet were glued to the ground and he couldn't move forward. To make matters worse, Natalie was standing there in her underwear!
Bo wanted to disappear.
What was INGRID doing here? Why would Natalie answer the front door half-naked like that?! Ingrid spotted him and walked over.
"Hi Bo... I just came over to tell you that I had a wonderful time on our date the other night", she said
Bo shifted nervously. "Hi Ingrid! It's a pleasure to see you again. I had a wonderful time too" He said. Natalie walked off into the bathroom and closed the door.
"I also wanted to give you a present", Ingrid said with a smile. "you can open in later."
"Wow...thank you", Bo whispered.
They looking into eachother's eyes. The sunlight captured the strands of Ingrid's silky blond hair and made her look so lovely. At that moment, Natalie emerged from the bathroom fully dressed.
"Yeah...I'll...uh, See you around", she muttered heading towards the front door. "Natalie!! Wait!!", Bo called out to her.
But Natalie just kept walking.
She strolled straight out the front door. "Who was that?", Ingrid asked curiously. "I didn't know you had a DAUGHTER!" "No...that's just...", Bo paused searching for the right words "She's my student. I'm teaching her how to paint..." "Oh." Ingrid said quietly putting her hands on her hips. "Why was she here so early in the morning? Parading around ....in her panties?"
"It's a long story" Bo said carefully. "But...I don't believe I will ever see her again."
Ingrid stared at him intensely. She was quiet. "Do you REALLY want a relationship with me, Bo?", Ingrid asked finally. "Are you ready for a committed relationship or am I going to get hurt here? Because If I'm going to get hurt, please let me know in advance. My heart has already been broken once and I don't want to make the same mistake twice. I'm past the point of playing games." Bo gave her a tight hug and reassured her that he DID want a true loving and lasting relationship.
They confirmed their next date for Friday and she left. He opened the present from Ingrid.
It was a wooden artist's model. There was a note attached.
"This is for your future Art television show. Every artist needs reference. So get cracking. I'm going to talk to my boss tonight. --xoxox--Ingrid"
Bo was touched. But for some reason his thoughts returned to Natalie.
He felt TERRIBLE about last night. She must be so hurt, embarrassed and confused.
He needed to talk to her and explain. Every night for 3 days in a row... Bo went to the Card Shack in search of Natalie. She wasn't there...
He didn't have her address or phone number. He didn't even know her last name!
Bo started to lose hope of ever seeing her again.
Maybe it was a sign from the universe that it was time for him to let her go.... Friday night, Bo drove to Ingrid's house for their second date.
She was going to cook him dinner and he had been looking forward to it. Ingrid gave him a warm hug as a greeting at the front door.
"It's so good to see you!", she exclaimed. "there are my children", Ingrid said pointing to the two beautiful children standing in the foyer "That's Lucy on the left, she's 14 and that's little Ethan, He's 5." "Are you going to be our new DADDY?", Ethan asked Bo with wide eyes.
Bo was thrown off guard and didn't know how to respond.
He suddenly felt fear. Things were moving too fast! "I'm sorry...", Ingrid apologized. "You are the first man to come to our home since the divorce. I'm incredibly embarrassed right now!"
"Don't sweat it", Bo said with a smile and regaining his composure. "It's perfectly fine. I understand. The food smells GREAT!" They all sat down to eat in the family room.
Ingrid had a beautiful home and the food was delicious. "I have some GOOD NEWS", Ingrid said near the end of the meal.
"I talked to my boss and I'm going to get you back on the air. We secured a spot for you on a reality television series called "THE SURREAL LIFE". You'll be filmed 24 hours a day in a home with Bob Saget from "Full House", Dolly Parton, Molly Ringwald, Scott Bakula from "Quantum leap" and all the members of the band "ACE OF BACE"! "Um...." Bo didn't know what to say, so he blurted out the first thing. "Those are a bunch of has-beens.... and the show completely exploits them." "Well, it's just a starting ground", Ingrid explained. "We need to re-introduce you to the public. People have forgotten you. After "THE SURREAL LIFE", I'm sure we can get your old show back on the air without a problem."
"Oh...Ingrid... I don't know if I'm comfortable with this", Bo stuttered. "I don't want to put my private life on display for the world to see...." "My Mom worked REAL HARD to get you this job.", Lucy spoke up. "You should do it." "I know, I just need some time to think about it... that's all", He said quietly.
He was filled with discomfort and shifted uneasily in his chair. When it was time to leave, Ingrid gave Bo another passionate kiss.
She felt so warm and wonderful. All his doubts dissolved. Over the next few weeks, Bo and Ingrid were inseperable.
They spent every other day together. Ingrid was a real homebody. So they spent a lot of time together at her home.
Playing chess... Building snowmen... And relaxing in bed simply talking.
Things were perfect and Bo was falling in love with Ingrid. One afternoon while Bo was at his home watching T.V. and lounging on the sofa...
...The PHONE RANG Bo picked it up and was surprised to hear the voice of NATALIE on the other end. His eyes widened.
"....Bo, I need you", Natalie said sounding upset "Can you come get me?"
"Where are you right now?", Bo asked. Bo jumped into his car and drove directly to the address Natalie had given him.
150 elm street.
It was a big beautiful home. He didn't imagine her living in a place like this... He knocked on the front door.
A young woman appeared on the other side of the glass door. But she didn't open it.
She just gave him a blank stare.
"Hi!", Bo called out hoping she could hear him. "I'm looking for NATALIE, is she here??"
The young woman didn't respond. She just kept staring at Bo. She looked almost fearful.
What was going on?
Suddenly he heard the sound of footsteps behind him.... It was Natalie!
Bo was so relieved and happy to see her again after so many weeks.
Natalie ran over and hugged him tightly.
"Bo!" She cried out "Thank you so much for coming!" "Natalie...what's going on?", Bo asked "Who is that girl behind the glass door?"
"We can't talk here", Natalie whispered "Lets go sit in your car" They sat down in Bo's car and Natalie began to explain:
"That was Layla. This is her house. She's a friend from college that graduated last year. I couldn't pay the rent on my apartment after I was fired from my job. My landlord evicted me and I had nowhere to go. So....Layla let me move in with her" "But Layla is crazy, Bo!", Natalie said fearfully. "She has completely lost her mind! She said that her roommate was murdered and that there's a man with a hook that tried to kill her. She says that "Bloody mary" is out to get her. She smashed every single mirror in the house!! This afternoon she started SCREAMING when I pulled out my tiny pocket mirror to check my make up. It's so terrifying. She's in therapy, but I think she needs to go to a mental institution!
I can't live here anymore but I have nowhere else to go! I called you because I was afraid and I didn't know who else to turn to. I'm so sorry...." "Natalie...", Bo said gently "You should have called me earlier. I would have helped you. You can stay in my guest room until you save up enough money to afford an apartment of your own again."
Bo drove Natalie back to his home.
It was late afternoon now and the sun was setting. The early spring weather was beautiful. Bo was in a great mood. "Is your girlfriend going to be okay with me staying with you?" Natalie asked as they strolled towards the front door.
Bo didn't answer. He wasn't so sure..... When they reached the front door Natalie turned to bo.
"I really appreciate this", she said quietly "I'm sorry for pulling a disappearing act on you. I just felt so hurt after that night. I wish you had TOLD me about Ingrid. Why didn't you?? You said I was too young but you didn't tell me you had a girlfriend!"
"I don't know...", Bo mumbled "It's complicated but I promise to be 100% honest with you from this point on" That night they had dinner together and Bo told Natalie ALL about his relationship with Ingrid. He also told her about the Reality show opportunity. He wanted her opinion.
"Oh no way! "THE SURREAL LIFE" is an awful Reality show. One of the worst ones", Natalie said "Please Don't sell out like that!"
"Well...that's the ONLY way I'm going to get my art show back on the air", Bo explained.
"Well then FORGET your old art show!", Natalie said. "Bo, Life is ALL about taking risks.", Natalie said "Sure, You can play it safe and sell out.... but why would you do that? Life is so short. Art is your passion and you're so GOOD at what you do. I believe in you"
"But my art show...", Bo began.
"Forget that. Your Art television program is in the past. Stop looking backwards and trying to make things return to how it USED to be. Be here in the present. RIGHT NOW.", she said "Start a NEW adventure. A new dream."
"What do you suggest I do then?", Bo asked "Well....Let me think...", Natalie said thoughtfully.
After a minute she said. "The Hair Salon I used to work for is currently up FOR SALE. The location is great! You can buy the lot and open an Art Gallery/Hair Salon. We'll sell your original paintings and I'll cut people's hair. We would be a great team!" "Natalie, that's an expensive investment. I would have to clear out my entire savings account to afford that lot! What if we fail?", Bo said "I don't know....."
At that moment... THE PHONE RANG. It was INGRID.
They talked for a long time.
Ingrid told him that she was leaving on a short business trip and Bo told her about Natalie moving in with him.
"Natalie will be staying in the guest room until she can afford her own place", Bo explained. "Are you okay with this?"
Ingrid was quiet. "Of course", she said after a long pause. "I trust you"
Before they hung up, Ingrid added one last thing: "You need to come up with your decision on the Reality show soon. So give it some thought and we'll discuss it more when I return from my trip" When Bo got off the phone, Natalie was already sleeping peacefully in the guest room. He gazed at her with affection from the doorway.
Bo had mixed emotions. He was so happy to have her back in his life but afraid at the same time.
What was he getting into? The next morning, Natalie convinced him to visit the Hair Salon and check out the available real estate.
Bo had to admit.
It WAS a great location for an art gallery... The real estate agent greeted Bo and Natalie inside.
"This establishment will be officially on sale in 3 weeks." the agent informed "So you have some time to think about it. But let me tell you, Once this place gets on the market... it's going to be sold VERY quickly. So don't wait too long to make up your mind"
Bo took her business card and promised that he would call her once he made up his mind. That afternoon, Bo began giving Natalie art lessons.
She was an attentive student. Every day after Natalie's morning college classes, they painted together side by side. They took breaks to laugh and goof off together...
Natalie made Bo feel like he was in his twenties again.
He had so much more energy and felt so alive. They loved having waterballoon fights.
Natalie was incredibly mischevious and playful. She kept Bo constantly on his toes.
After two weeks of art instruction and spending every day together bo expressed some concern over her lack of a social life.
"You're young, Natalie", He said "Why are you wasting all of your time with an old man like me? Go out and enjoy your youth. Party with your friends. It's okay. You don't owe me your time"
"Bo, I love hanging out with you and I'm learning so much. I don't want to spend my time with anyone else", she said "Will you paint me again?"
Bo agreed and Natalie left to go get changed. Bo pulled together his art supplies
And Natalie emerged from the other room in only her bathingsuit. Bo's breath got caught in his throat. He couldn't speak when he saw her....
"I thought we would try more of a figure study this time", Natalie said "Is that okay?" "Tell me how I should pose", Natalie said.
But Bo still couldn't find any words. He was just in awe at how beautiful she looked in the late afternoon light.
The moment was interrupted by the DOOR BELL. Bo and Natalie went downstairs to answer the front door.
It was Bo's BROTHER, Pete. Bo greeted his brother and introduced Natalie.
"Natalie, this is my brother, Pete", He said "Pete...this is Natalie"
They exchanged polite "hello's" "I need to go work on my term paper", Natalie said walking out of the room.
"Pete it's good to see you. When did you get into town?", Bo asked his brother "It's been a long time. How are you?"
Pete just shook his head "Whoah man..Holy SMOKES! Who is that HOT YOUNG THING?!", He whispered "Are you sleeping with her? She looks barely legal!" "Natalie??" Bo shook his head "Oh no! As a matter of fact, I am actually in a relationhip with a woman my age named INGRID. She even has two wonderful kids. So it's nothing like what you're thinking...."
"So Let me get this straight!" Pete said "My goofy old brother is in a real relationship again and he's got some little young chica on the side?! Oh man, seriously...playaaaaa!!" "Pete...Pete..Please", Bo protested "What if she heard you? Keep your voice down. It's NOT like that! She is just living here because-"
"LIVING HERE?!", Pete cut in "Oh it's just getting better and better. Does your old lady know about this?"
"Yes, Ingrid is okay with it. We've talked..." Bo said "..and please don't call her an "Old lady", I really love her!" "hmmm...You love her? Well...we better sit down and talk because I am having a hard time getting my my mind wrapped around this. Don't you have a seat to offer your long lost brother?", Pete asked.
"Of course! Lets go in the dining room" Bo said. So Bo and Pete sat down together in the diningroom.
They talked for a long time catching up on everything that had happened in eachother's lives. When they were done. Bo was surprised that his brother, Pete had some insights to share.
"Listen Bo", Pete started "I think I am getting the picture here and it might not be what you are telling me. I've SEEN the way you look at Natalie and I know you can't honestly say that you aren't attracted to her. You love the attention she's giving you. It's not hard to understand because let's face it... we are getting older. 19 year old girls aren't turning their heads as we walk down the street every day."
"But I also understand that you are truly falling in love with this other woman, Ingrid. I am telling for SURE that she is not NOT really okay with what you have going on here." Pete said "I mean, I could feel the electricity between you and Natalie just from greeting her at the front door.
....And I'm sure your Girlfriend is feeling it more.
It's not right, man"
Bo was silent. "See you've got to make a CHOICE here. I am not telling you how to decide. The age difference between you and Natalie should not be the deciding factor but it's also NOT just a matter of numbers." Pete said.
Bo looked at Pete and flushed slightly. He realized that his brother was right about his attraction to Natalie.
"Natalie is so young and you can't be quite sure what person she will turn into a few years from now. She's still in the process of discovering herself. She could be out the door tomorrow with another guy 20 years younger than you. Ingrid on the other hand is closer to your age. You can grow old with her. Besides, Do you really want some young woman having to look after you when you can't feed yourself anymore?"
Bo shook his head.
"So you need to make a decision because this arrangement is really messed up. Listen to your heart, bro. What is it telling you to do?" Bo was overwhelmed and gulped.
"Well...this is about all the advice I can digest in one day", Bo responded in a frazzled voice. "Plus I have to get ready for a date with Ingrid. She is returning from a two-week-long business trip tonight" "thank you, brother", Bo said giving Pete a tight hug "It was great seeing you."
"It was great seeing you too, Bo", Pete said "Good luck with everything"
They felt as close as they were in their childhood.
When Pete left, Bo started getting ready for his date. His mind was spinning with a myriad of thoughts. Bo entered Natalie's room to say goodbye before leaving to Ingrid's house
He was surprised to see her CRYING.
"Natalie...what's wrong??" He asked in concern. "Don't you know??", she asked "Do I have to say it out loud when it's so obvious to both of us?" "Bo, I have feelings for you...", She said "I can't help the way I feel and I can't make it go away. I know I can't keep living with you. It's not fair to either of us. You're in a relationship with someone else. I need to move out."
Bo didn't know how to respond. He had feelings for her too and he knew that he shouldn't. Bo put his hand on Natalie shoulder and pulled her close.
"Natalie, We need to have a long talk tomorrow", He whispered. "I want so badly to stay and talk to you more right now but I can't. I have to go... Please don't leave. Just wait, okay? You mean so much to me and I don't want to lose you. I know we can make this work somehow, I just need to sort my own feelings out." It broke Bo's heart to walk out of that room but he couldn't betray Ingrid.
He needed to have a long talk with Ingrid. he needed to have a long talk with Natalie.
He didn't know what he was feeling anymore or what he wanted. Everything was a mess. He drove to Ingrid's house and walked quickly to the front door.
He was already a half an hour late and the conversation with Natalie was still running through his head.. He was surprised when Ingrid greeted him in a gorgeous shimmering evening dress.
"you look stunning!", Bo exclaimed. "I didn't realize we were going out tonight!" "we're not", Ingrid said "I just have something special to say..."
Suddenly she felt down on one knee. She was trembling and held her chest.
"I've never done this before, so forgive me....", Ingrid said breathlessly. And right there in her livingroom in front of her children...
She PROPOSED.
"I know we've only been dating for a short time. But I feel a connection with you that I know in my heart will last a lifetime. I want to spend the rest of my life by your side. Please marry me, Bo. I will be the best wife you could ever imagine and I know we'll be happy together. My children love you. I love you.", Ingrid whispered. Bo glanced over at Ingrid's children all dressed up.
They both had expectant smiles on their face as they waited for his response. They looked so happy. They were great kids.
They would all make a beautiful family together. But a large part of Bo felt scared. Was he ready for this kind of commitment? Was he ready to marry Ingrid and be a father to her children? He loved her but this was all moving so fast.
On the other hand, life is so SHORT and He's 45 years old. A woman as amazing as Ingrid only comes once in a lifetime.
But what about his feelings for NATALIE?
In the last chapter I gave YOU, the readers, the opportunity to steer the course of the story.
It was VERY close -there were many undecided and votes for "BOTH" - but Ingrid was the woman you chose. She won out by 51% over Natalie 49%.
Now it's your decision again.
Should Bo marry Ingrid?
The decision between YES or NO will change his life forever. But keep one thing in mind. It takes a lot of courage for a woman to ask a man to marry her. She is vulnerable and standing before him. Saying NO could destroy their relationship forever.
But saying "YES" means that he and Natalie will never be able to act on their feelings for eachother.
It's YOUR call. To be continued......

Great story! I think that Bo should not say yes until he truly knows how he feels about Natalie it's not fair to Ingrid, or Natalie. He should take some time to sort out his feelings and find out what he truly wants. He should ask Ingrid for time. The relationship is moving very fast....

It seems that Bo is confused about so many things. The reference to the Urban Legends was excellent, and the fact that it's driving her crazy is neat. Back to Bo....If I were put in that sort of situation, seeing as how I am almost that age myself, I would feel very 'pushed', and want to back off. Ingrid is becoming more agressive, and even tho' it does take a lot of courage to do what she did...it really comes off as desperate.
