This is the second and final part of Annies story. If you missed the first part it can be found on my page . Sorry it took longer than anticipated. Have had computer problems. Accidentaly deleted my original Annie! so this is Annie mark two. Hope you enjoy. Apologies for the odd mistake and thanks for all the CC.
River walked deep into the forest and sat by the lake for hours. He dare not go back to the cave. For he knew that if he saw Annie he would beg her to stay. Annie had been the light of his life over the past few days. She had made the forest a much happier place. She had lifted Rivers spirt,she had made him feel alive inside, made him have feelings that he had never known before. This was such a strange emotion that was tugging at his heart.
" Oh Annie why did I send you away" Night time came and River made his way back home.
The cave was empty but River could smell Annie. He closed his eyes and could almost see her bright happy face.
Tears began to fall down Rivers face , tears that he had never cried before.
What was this new found emotion that he was feeling.
River had lived in the forest as long as he could remember. He knew not what he was nor where he came from, he had always felt alone until he had found Annie.... River had seen many people come and go through his forest.
He had learnt that humans came in many forms.
There was the male that was hairy , but not as hairy as himself. He was often called Dad.
River admired these humans from afar, for he had learnt many years ago that he was different to them and that when on the rare occassion he had got too close they had screamed and run away, just like Annie had done... Then there was the female, that was always busy. No matter how busy she was the female always seemed to be smiling and singing and making everybody happy.
River often wondered whether there was a female like himself somewhere out there waiting to make him happy... Best of all River liked the little humans. They brought so much laughter into the forest.
They were never still and it often made River tired just watching them run about.... He would hide behind the trees and watch these people . Over the years he had learnt so much about humans and their feelings... He learnt that this little group was called a family. How he wished he had a family of his own. He was tired of being a misfit out in the forest. He wanted to be able to love and be loved back in return.... He lay on his bed and looked at the flowers he had picked for Annie from the forest. Was it just the other day . It felt like an eternity since he had told Annie to leave .
Could these feelings be this love that he had often heard people talk about.
He thought love was something wonderous, something that made your heart soar like an eagle.
If this was love it was making River feel miserable, so miserable all he wanted to do was to sleep
Perhaps he could fall asleep forever so that he could dream about holding Annie once more.... It had been three months since Annie had packed her bag and left the forest. She had waited for what seemed a life time for River to come back and ask her to stay. The snow kept falling and it was dark by the time she reached her hotel.
She had gone back to the city and thrown herself into her work. But no matter how hard she worked how tired she felt ,her thoughts kept going back to River and the blisfull days she spent with him in the forest... She looked at her photo album and remember the forest . Why did she leave , why had she not stayed .
River had thought because of their differences their love would not last.
She had felt so at home with River so at ease. Her heart ached when she thought of him.
Annie decided that she could not go on like this , she was wasting her life away.
She decided she would go back to the forest and find River.
If he told her to leave again , then leave she would, but she could not live with this uncertainty .
She knew she loved him , what if he loved her too . What if they both felt the same way about each other.
She decided the following morning she would pack her bag and go and find River.
Her determination frightened her. " Oh what the heck I have nothing to loose".... Annie arrived at the forest early in the morning. Just being back in the county made her feel more alive than she had for a long time.
The smell of the pine trees was exhilirating.The snow had gone . The forest looked beautiful. The flowers were blooming and all the birds were singing. Annie felt that she was home.
" River " she called " Its Annie I have come back." There was no answer.... She walked towards the cave. She could see a dark figure lying on the bed. It looked like River but he looked so thin, so weak.
Annie walked nearer and gasped at what she saw... She knelt down beside him . It was River , he looked so frail. Gone was the tall strong beast she had once known.
His hair was matted and it smelt as if he had not washed for weeks. She wondered how long he had been like this , her heart sank.
"River its Annie, I have come home, River what have you done to yourself. Why did I stay away so long"... River stirred.
"Am I dreaming , My Annie is it really you, oh Annie I have missed you.
I thought I was never going to see you again. I was ready to leave this world ".
Annie helped River get off the bed. She bathed and fed him and made him a clean bed of straw... Annie lay on the bed next to him she looked into his eyes. They were not the bright happy eyes she had once known. She was worried, River looked exhausted.
" Dont worry my Annie tomorrow I will feel better. I will get up and fill the cave with flowers for you , I am never going to send you away again, thank you for coming home.... Morning came and River seemed weaker, he could barely stand up. He was fading away in front of Annies eyes.
"River I must go and find a doctor to look at you , you are ill , you need medicine."
River could hardly find the strenght to speak.
" No Annie if you fetch a doctor the whole world will know I exist and I will be taken away from you. I can not loose you again. I would raher die than loose you"... On her many travels Annie had met a Witch doctor, he had seen many unusual things and would be able to treat River without asking questions .
" I am going to find help, I need you to stay in the cave and keep warm . I will be back as quickly as I can."
River hugged Annie, he felt so weak he was afraid that she might not be back in time.
" I have waited for you all my life Annie , hurry back...
With that Annie was out of the door... Annie knew that she had to hurry . She knew the doctor live on Twikki Island .
She caught a plane and went on her way , praying that she would find the doctor in time to save River... She found the doctor in his hut.
She told him about River's plight and asked if he would go with her to the forest to help.
Annie was shocked at what she heard... "I will gladly come with you my child , but I can not promise to save your friend. Beasts like River usualy live a certain lenght of time then go off to another world. There is no medicine to make your friend better, but I will come with you and see what can be done to make his last days comfortable . Come we must hurry".
Annie and the doctor caught the next plane back to the mountains... They arrived at the forest to find River slumped by the lake.
Was Annie too late, had her journrey to find the doctor been in vain... " River , I told you to stay in the cave , what are you doing out here."
She was almost afraid to look, was River still alive.
The doctor knelt down and River stirred... "My son you are not long for this world I am afraid I am unable to help you"
River gasped ,
"I know the end is near , but will you grant me one gift before I leave , a very precious gift.
The doctor and River talked for a while, Annie could not hear what they were saying. She saw the dotor pass River a small parcel.
The forest became dark... The doctor started chanting and River seemed to be in agony . His whole body was writhing in pain.
Annie screamed
" Stop it you are killing him, you are supposed to make him better."
River fell to the floor... An eerie silence fell upon the forest. Not one bird could be heard.
Annie could barely look.
A green mist appeared and out of the mist walked River.
Not the big hairy River that Annie had known and loved but River in human form.... "My Annie at long last I can hold you and feel you next to me , I have longed for this moment for all my life. I know now that these feelings that I have for you is called love , Annie I love you with all my heart... "I have always loved you River , I never stopped loving you, even when you sent me away. Deep in my heart I have always loved you. You and this forest is what has been missing from my life . I have finaly found what I was looking for " They lay down in the long grass and talked for hours.
River knew that the doctors gift would not last long. He wanted to spend every precious moment with his Annie. He wanted to know everything about her.
Annie felt complete , she felt she was home where she belonged... Annie could not belive how beautiful River was.
"Why did you ask the doctor to make you human , did you think I would love you more."
" No my Annie I wanted to be able to love you properly, to hold you in my arms , to feel you next to me . To be able to do these simple gestures makes me a very happy man... Night fell. They lay down together on the bed .
River was so happy he thought his heart would errupt.
Annie felt safe in his strong arms... "When you wake in the morning I will not be at your side my Annie. Do not try to follow as I will be gone. I will always watch over you. You will never be alone"
Annie pulled River close, she did not want to think of what the morning would bring . She wanted River to love her as she had never been loved before... That night the whole forest was filled with love and happiness... Morning came and Annie was alone in the bed. River had filled the room with orchids.
Annie knew that River had gone and she would never see him again, but she was not saddened,she did not feeel alone. His presence was all around her... River had wandered deep into the forest. He knew his time had come to leave this world. He was not frightened , he was ready to go... The witch doctor had granted him his gift of love. He had been able to love his Annie as a human. He knew the gift would last one day and then he would change back to his usual form. It was a painful process but one that River had gladly undertaken. He knew that it would weaken his body . He was ready to die now that he had known true love... The whole forest was quiet as River called out
"My Annie I love you now and I always will , I promise I will never leave you... Annie moved from the city and built a house in the forest by the lake. The lake where she first saw River and ran away from him. She felt at home in the forest. She had never been happier. Her friends thought she would be lonely, but Annie loved the forest, , it was what she had been searching for most of her life...
Anyway how could she be lonely when she always had the company of her beautiful twin sons.
Jack and Jake.
River had promised he would never leave her , and he never did....

Your Annie story was a good read. You added all of the main ingredients for keeping my interest. It is important the protagonist is someone capable of carrying the storyline and keeps solid interest flowing. The ending was very well done because you remembered the importance of consequences and did not let us down by going for the typical ending. Good characters, good pictures, and a very engaging story.
