"I AM DONTE AND I HAVE RETURNED"
I opened her bedroom door and had to steady myself. It was as if I was looking into the past. There staring me straight in the face was a full size portrait of Scarlett... Raven looked at me and said "It's her isn't it, it's Scarlett my mother". I was lost for words , my mind was racing. Looking at the painting brought back so many memories from the past. I held Raven close. I finaly found enough strength to speak. " Yes it is your mother, how did you know what she looks like". Raven could not explain. She said she often dreamt about this woman and had guessed it was Scarlett. When she woke up this morning , she had this urge to paint. " To be honest " she said. "the paint brush seemed to do all the work" The painting took pride of place in Raven's bedroom. I was begining to feel apprehensive as Raven spent more and more of her time on her bed. She had told me that Scarlett spoke to her, not in a voice she could hear but inside her head.
"Can you tell me what she says" I asked.
Raven replied. " Only how much she loves and misses us and wishes she was with us now"
We held each other tight. I was begining to wish that life had been different. How we could both have done with having Scarlett around to love.
As I was walking out of the room Raven said " Scarlett said, beware of Donte, he is on his way" . I thought Raven was tired and overwhelmed, especially after the painting incident.
I thought nothing more of the comment and went to make some supper for us both... The next few weeks past without incident. We carried on with our normal life. School, work and messing around. Then one day I was late for work and stepped out of the door to find a stranger just about to ring my door bell. It was the last person I expected to see on my door step. It was Annie. She had decided to come and find me. I called work and told them I would not be in... I invited Annie into the house and we started to talk. There were so many questions to ask. She looked good and had not changed much over the years. She apologised for her sun glasses and said she was suffering from hay fever. I thought nothing more of it. It was like old times , she was still easy to talk to. Something was different though , something had changed. I was just about to tell her about Raven, when she charged in through the door as she usualy did when she came home from school... Raven came in as bright and breezy as normal. I said to Annie "This is Raven my daughter. " The colour seemed to drain from Annie's face and she got up... " A daughter , you have a daughter " Annie spluttered. " How have you got a daughter" It can't be Scarlett's daughter. She almost spat the name out of her mouth... She started to rant and rave about how Scarlett had spoilt everything all those years ago and was still doing it now.
Raven could not bear to hear her mother being foul mouthed and left the room. I realised that this must have been a big shock for Annie. I decided a strong cup of coffee was needed and went off to the kitchen to make some. Annie followed Raven out into the garden. I could see Raven and Annie talking to each other . Raven did not seem happy but at least she was talking. I decided to leave them mull things over for a while and went for a shower... I should have stayed where I was as the next thing I heard was Annie shouting at Raven. " Now that I have found him , I will have him . I have waited so long for this . Scarlett stopped me once you will not , your strength is not like hers" Raven seemd to be trying to get away but she was frozen to the spot. I rushed out in the garden and shouted " What do you think you are doing , why are you upseting my daughter. How can you say such things when you dont even know her." Annie seemed to compose herself , she took a deep breath " I'm so sorry please forgive me I dont know what came over me. It must be all the traveling and the shock of learning about Raven"
I decided to give her the benifit of the doubt. Raven had gone indoors and Annie seemed much calmer. Raven and I decided it was late and we offered Annie a bed for the night. Perhaps things would seem better in the morning... The next morning Raven was very subdude , she seemed quiet when Annie was about. We had breakfast , Annie did not eat, she said that she was not hungry. She had removed her sun glasses. Her eyes looked different somehow. I could not fathom out what had changed about Annie, perhaps the past years had made her bitter. Her eyes looked cold and hard.
We finished our breakfast and decided to spend some time in the garden... A gypsy came to the door , I had seen her passing often but she had never called before. " Cross my palm with silver and I will let you see into the future" she said. Raven came out of the house and begged me to let the gypsy say what she wanted to say. She got out her crystal ball and looked ino it " I see a dark stranger coming , he is no friend, you must beware , he comes to harm you." I felt a cold chill go through my entire body... The whole garden seemed to be covered in a dark menacing cloud. Raven screamed and cowered in fright. What was happening to us. It reminded me of the time all those years ago when I first met Scarlett. I was afraid for my daughter,s saftey and took her into the house. The gypsy was still in the garden and as Annie came closer her crystal ball became brighter. The gypsy said in a low voice " He has arrived, the spirit is among us" and ran out of the garden...
We spent the rest of the day indoors. Raven was too frightened to go out . She spent most of the day up in her bedroom , where she felt safe... Evening came and I went out into the garden for some fresh air. Annie followed. She began to talk about the time we were to be married all those years ago , and how she regreted going away. She started to caress my cheek. It felt wrong. All these years I had been alone yet at this moment in time I felt as if I belonged to Scarlett... Annie came closer, her eyes were aglow and there was a musty smell in the air. What did that smell remind me of... I tried to tell her that I was not interested but she kept coming closer. The smell was becoming stronger. It was then I suddenly realised what the smell reminded me of. It was the night I nearly burnt to death in Scarlett's room. I pushed Annie away. She became limp and said in a strange voice . " I will have to punish you for this". She passed out and I carried her into the house. Tomorrow morning I was going to book a taxi for her and I was going to ask her to leave... The following morning as I woke I could smell smoke and then I heard screaming. It was Raven and it was coming from the shrine. I rushed down to see the shrine engulfed in flames and Raven was trapped the other side. The flames became higher and higher. I was desperate to save Raven but the flames just pushed me back . My Raven was lost, there was nothing I could do to save her... Then Annie appeared from nowhere. Her eyes were bulging and a voice came deep from within her " I said you would be punished"... I was distraught , my whole world had fallen appart . I wanted to grieve for Raven but something much more sinister was happening in front of my eyes. It seemed as if a dark creature was engulfing Annie ... There was a struggle and an almighty stench... The whole place turned into darkness and a grotesque voice said " I am Donte, I have arrived". What I did next was unexcusable. I knew I was no match for this beast so I ran into Raven's bedroom and and locked the door. Did I honestly think a locked door was going to stop this beast. I did the only thing I thought was left , and that was to pray. I went down on my knees and prayed. I felt myself talking to Scarlett. I thought of what she had said all those years ago in church. She had said to me "I can only take you if you are willing. I shouted out loud. " Scarlett your daughter and I need you as we have never needed you before , come to us and help us please." The room suddenly changed , I seemed to be back in Scarlett's apartment. A deathly silence fell upon the room. A great big chasm opened up in the floor , a big ball of fire erupted and out of the smoke appeared Scarlett... The next thing I knew we were back in my house. "Is it really you Scarlett , Have you truly come back ." I felt a rush of gladness sweep over me. I suddenly came to my senses and remembered about Raven and the beast downstairs. I started to tell Scarlett. " Hush" she said " I know and I have work to do if I am to save Raven's soul...
She said she needed to find her crystals and she was gone. Deep down inside I was hoping she would not be long as I was so afraid for us all. Why did she need crystals ... Scarlett found her crystals and as she did her whole body transformed , gone was the black gown. She was a vision in white. She started chanting and the crystals began to glow... She began to rock back and forth, she seemed to be in pain and her chanting became louder... I had to cover my ears as the noise became unbearable , it was as if a wild annimal was caught in a trap... And then Donte appeared. They began to argue but Scarlett stood tall and strong. " Be healed or suffer the consequences " she said in a firm voice. Donte threw back his head and laughed. "You are no match for me"... Scarlett's chanting became even louder and the crystals became brighter. "My strength. is returning she said in a loud voice. "You have choosen not to be healed , then you must be gone"... The whole room became bright , the crystal were as bright as the sun. It seemed as if part of the crystals were breaking off and raining down on Donte... He became weaker and weaker and the crystals became brighter. The whole room fell silent, not a sound was to be heard... He slumped to the floor. Scarlett stood above him and said " I am sorry Donte but there was no other way, you gave me no choice but to destroy you" ... And then he was gone . Scarlett was getting weaker and weaker... I was worried about her and wanted her to rest. " I still have our daughter to save" and off she went towards the shrine... The fire was burning fiercly in the shrine , Scarlett covered her face and walked into the burning flames. Had I lost my daughter and Scarlett. It seemed as if I had waited an eternity and then it happened... It was just a cloud of smoke to begin with and then I saw her , my Raven she had returned to me. Words were not enough to describe how I felt when I realised she was alive. A few seconds later and another cloud of smoke... It was Scarlett. What a beautiful site to my eyes to see Scarlett and Raven together after all these years. Both were unharmed after the horrific event that they had suffered... Scarlett must have been exhausted as she slept for the next three days , we kept a vigil by her bedside... On the fourth day she woke up and wanted to get out of bed to be with us. She was still weak and could hardly stand. " I have wasted all these years, I must get up and explain to you both. I have a many things to tell you" and she began her story... She sat and told us how her troubles began. She had always had special powers and had worked with healing crystals that had been handed down through the generations of her family. When she was a teenager she had misused her powers and had sold her soul to Donte. At first Donte was kind but as he took strength from other souls he became evil and wanted to destroy all the good things in life." I tried to get away but he always found me". The day she met me she fell in love and told Donte she was leaving. Donte had other ideas and wanted to destroy us both... Scarlett held me close " And then I found I was with child , your child". Her face lit up and all the pain seemed to be washed away. " I could not let Donte take you, or our child . I knew he would destroy me if I disobeyed him. As I lay dying in the church I used all of my powers to transfer Raven from my body into yours. I knew she would be safe and I prayed that Donte would leave you alone once I was gone". We built a new shrine in our garden in memory of Annie. Scarlett tends to the garden everyday. We will never know what brought Annie or Donte back into our lives. In one way I am glad, as we may never have seen Scarlett again if it was not for them . We often wonder whether Donte and Annie were one, or whether Donte had taken over Annie's body as he had Scarlett all those years ago . All we know is that the past is behind us and we have so much living to catch up with. We decided that summer to get married . We thought it best not to get married in a church as we all know what happened last time we stepped into one of those... It had taken a long time for us to become a family but it was well woth the wait for all of us... Raven says she is the happiest girl alive she is so proud to have us both together after such a long time appart. I think we deserve a bit of happiness since we seem to have been to hell and back. It seems to me that love was much stronger than evil and love won the battle in the end...
