Welcome to the next episode of The Makeover of Malina. Being a documentary, unforeseen events sometimes occur. This series is being extended with an extra episode.

I now turn you over to Haley who will narrate what happened at the P.U.R.E. West dance club.
Hello everyone. Welcome back.

Our little group arrived at P.U.R.E. West in much better spirits. We managed to have a fun ride over despite Emmy, Tanya, and Marisa bailing out on us. Well, I don't know about the guys because they traveled together in the mini-van. We girls rode in Shishie10's car.
Malina was excited. "Yes! I'm finally going to put all that time spent dancing in my living room to use," she said as we sauntered up to the club entrance.

Gimpy laughed. "It's nice to know I'm not the only one 'tripping the light fantastic' at home. I'm also glad that you ladies are here; I won't have to worry about not having someone to dance with."

"Gimpy, the women will be trying to steal you guys away from us," said Shishie.

Benjamin snorted. "In our dreams."
I remember an advertisement for P.U.R.E. West:
P.U.R.E. refined. Dance, drink, karaoke, and socialize in an atmosphere of water and fire.

Well, we were already experiencing that water and fire as fire jets and a fountain blasted water and flame into the air. We could hear the thumping music pulsing from the building and the sound of a woman's laughter floated down from the deck.
We stepped into the coolness of the white lobby. The air was so fresh, like we were breathing purified oxygen. It smelled faintly of Snapdragons, but I didn't see any blossoms in the room. Shishie10 headed straight for the dance floor. I was disappointed that it was so empty. It didn't seem to bother the DJ. She was really into the music.

"Come on in everybody," said ShiShie. "The best way to get this party started is to get out on the floor. Dance and they will come."
The music was calling to my body and I couldn't help moving to it. Benjamin however, seemed a bit intimidated.

"Let's Smustle, everyone! Benjamin, do what I do," said Shishie.
With someone to imitate, Benjamin dived right in. It didn't take him long to catch on. Gimpy was a natural. He must shake some serious booty when he's home alone in his apartment.

We were having a great time. It's so much fun being out with your friends and letting loose. You don't care how you look while dancing. You just feel the music and let it take you where it will. However, it was at this moment when I felt like I was being watched.
There was a guy standing there, watching us dance. He wasn't a "pretty boy" at all, but he had a nice smile and there was something about him that transmitted: I'm worth a second look. Of course he wasn't scoping me; he was checking out Malina. It figures. He sat on a barstool and continued his observation, flashing that smile of his occasionally, and bobbing a little to the music. Malina glanced over at him now and then. "This should be interesting," I said to myself. Shishie was correct. People were joining us on the dance floor now. One of the newcomers was a particularly pleasant surprise.

"Marisa!" Malina screamed when she spotted her. "Yay! I'm so happy you changed your mind." Marisa smiled and waved at everyone. She then made a beeline towards Gimpy.
This was the icing on our fun-cake. The up-tempo music ended and the DJ played something slow and romantic. "I'm so glad you decided to come. I was really missing you," said Gimpy to Marisa.

Marisa blushed. "Thinking about how I left you guys was driving me crazy. Plus hanging out with moody Tanya and Emmy while you all partied seemed stupid to me. I told them as much, so here I am and I'm glad I left. Emmy was behaving kinda odd." She blushed again. "I was missing you too."
Gimpy took Marisa by the hand and waist and began to slow dance with her.

"Well...I didn't see this coming. I've been away too long," said Malina.
"I thought I sensed some chemistry between those two while we were at Sublime," I said to Malina. The barstool guy was now standing behind her. He looked like he wanted to talk to her, so I started to leave gaps in our conversation where he could jump in and introduce himself. He just stood there--watching. I could read in Malina's eyes that she was aware of him.

Shishie10, slapped her hand to her forehead, rolled her eyes, and started making faces at him (he didn't notice). I could guess her thoughts: "come on...you can do it...anytime now...speak up!" Malina gave a big sigh and was turning to address him. Only...
...she was interrupted by this woman.

"Excuse me, but aren't you a model with the Tower agency?" she asked.
Malina told her no and that she wasn't a model at all.
The woman seemed surprised. "Really? Well I think I've just made a discovery here. Please take my card; my name is Charlotte Wells. I want to introduce you to the owner of the Hartford agency.

The barstool guy walked off as Malina read Ms. Well's business card. "I'm flattered Ms. Wells, but I have to be honest with you. I'm not interested in living a model's lifestyle," she said.

Ms. Wells seemed disappointed, like a prize-winning fish had just got away. "Well I thank you for your frankness, dear. Keep my card in case you change your mind."
As I watched Ms. Wells take a seat to continue her model scouting, Malina turned to see where the guy was going.

"Am I still not attractive enough, Haley?"

"Huh?" It took a few microseconds for her question to penetrate my brain. I was still in shock from her throwing away a possible modeling career. I would have jumped at it. "I think the guy is a little shy or something, perhaps even intimidated," I said.
Malina huffed. "So now I'm too beautiful."

Shishie10 joined us. "Interesting looking guy, but I find his lack of self confidence unappealing," she said. I had to agree with her. The guy seemed less mysterious and provocative now.
Benjamin waltzed over and asked Malina to slow dance.

"Oh...that would feel so weird, Ben; you're like my brother. Besides, I'm really hot right now. I'll dance with you when I cool down and the DJ plays a faster song."
Benjamin seemed blasé about the rejection, but I saw a little hurt flash across his face. I think Emmy was right. He is in love with Malina. Malina didn't seem aware of his infatuation. She walked off in the direction of the shy barstool guy.

I wish I'd known Malina before her surgery. She's quite assertive. I wonder if it is due to her makeover or if she was always this way. The other wing of P.U.R.E. West embraced us with its coolness. Quite the opposite of the dance side with its fire motif, I guess this was the water side--designed for socializing. If felt good after the heat I worked up while dancing. Malina's shy guy sat at the bar, chatting with the barkeeper. "Cover me, girls. I'm going in," said Malina.

Shishie laughed. "All three of us might make him run out of the club. You won't be needing us."
"Haley, how are you on the Electo-dance Sphere?"

"I've seen other people try it, but I've never been on one myself," I replied to Shishie.

"Well, tonight's your lucky night."

Malina sat next to the guy as Shishie and I made our way to the dance sphere. "So why am I doing this and not you?" I asked.

"There is no way I'm getting on that thing in this dress. At least your skirt is long and elastic enough to cling to your legs," she replied.

I couldn't argue with that.
The machine unfolded to form the sphere and arcs of electricity danced around my feet as it began to levitate. I adjusted my balance to steady myself.

The weird thing is I could hear the music from the dance room in my head. Somehow this thing was connected to the DJ booth and it was sending vibrations through my body to the auditory bones in my ears. So this is why it's called a dance sphere--freaky, but kewl!
"There you go girl! Keep your feet firmly planted and your hand grip wide."

Good advice from Shishie, this thing is more physical than I thought.
Malina seemed to be doing well with her guy. He appeared quite talky once she got him started. "Tyler?"

I nearly lost my grip when I saw him stroll into the room. He headed toward the upper level stairs, but changed his mind. He had spotted Malina. Did he recognize her?
"Oh, Lord." I thought. "Why do I have to be in this contraption?" I wanted to be at that bar. I couldn't believe it. It looked like he was hitting on Malina even though she was with another guy. How arrogant can you get?

Malina responded back to him, which surprised me. You would think she would ignore him and keep taking to the other guy.
Whoops! There goes Mr. shy.

I'm sorry. I'm not seeing what Malina sees in this guy. Gawd! Get a backbone, Buddy. It was at this moment when I lost my footing inside the dance sphere.
Next, I lost my handgrip.

"Haley!" yelled Shishie. She covered her eyes. Fortunately I didn't tumble around in the sphere like I've seen a couple of people do.
I fell straight though, somehow.

"Haley! Are you alright?" yelled Malina.
"I'm fine," I said. I fell on my behind instead of my neck. Well, I wanted to be out of that thing anyway, only with a little more dignity. "Next time, you get to ride the dance sphere, ShiShie."

She laughed guiltily. We moved to get seats at the bar.
I approached them in time to hear Tyler say: "'Don't I have gophers to scare away?' What is that supposed to mean?" "Maybe you should ask some of the 'homely townies' that are 'constantly popping up from the nether world' what that means," said Malina.

Tyler stared at her for a moment. "Have I done something to you in another life? Why so hostile? I'm just trying to get to know you?"

I'm not going to lie to you all. I was totally enjoying Tyler's bewilderment.
"You've already had your chance in this life when you asked for my phone number," said Malina.

"We've met before?" An expression of dread washed over Tyler's face. He had probably chased so many women that he couldn't remember them all anymore.

"Yes we met before--last month at Maple Springs Pool and Spa. My name is Malina. Remember?"
Tyler's eyes darted around as he searched his memory. He gaped at Malina. "That was you?"

"I had some cosmetic surgery done since then."

"You look fantastic now!"

"Well I feel fantastic now, much better than I did after meeting you."
"Actually, I was happy with myself before this final surgery. Catching the conversation you and your friend had at the espresso bar changed that; it pushed me over the edge."

Tyler stared at the bar. "I'm sorry you heard that. I was trying to be nice and not hurt your feelings."
"Building someone up then tearing them down is an odd way of being nice. How was I supposed to feel when you never called: At least he talked to me? Oh I'm so happy?"

"Well it was better than saying point blank: I don't find you attractive."

Malina tried her best to contain her anger. "If you weren't so shallow maybe you would bother to dig deeper and find what's truly valuable and attractive in a person."
Tyler shook his head and got up from the bar. "Now wait a minute, I'm not about to sit here and be insulted, especially when I'm not a bad guy. I think now is a good time for us to go our separate ways." Malina couldn't resist a parting shot. "The next time you talk to a woman, try to explore who she is instead of snatching her up for how she looks." Tyler stopped in his tracks.

"If I'm not mistaken, you approached me for how I looked, and you also changed yourself be snatched up. So go throw yourself at that ugly red-haired guy to prove that you aren't a hypocrite. You'll know in your heart that you still want a man that looks like me."

Malina nearly leapt off her barstool.
"He's not ugly! It's called character! And he's far more interesting than you."

Tyler didn't bother with a comeback.

"Jerk," Malina said under her breath. She then headed for the stairs. "I'm going to find Chester...and it won't be necessary for me to throw myself at him."

I would later find out that our shy guy's full name is Chester Gieke and that he's a robotisist who developed the AI for the new Servo series of robots. Smart guy.
We followed Malina up the stairs.

Shishie let out a giggle. "I think we better find some rope for Malina. If another attractive guy comes on to her, we might have to tie Chester down so he doesn't run off again."
Malina and Chester were sitting in the karaoke lounge. Some guy was really hamming it up on the microphone. I asked Shishie if she would like to join me in a duet. I wanted to sing, but I didn't want to be up there alone. She agreed, and we found a song that we both felt comfortable with: A Waste of My Tears. I used to sing in the church choir, Southern Baptist, so I can really wail when I want to. Shishie was pretty good too. Malina and Chester looked a bit stunned to hear us tear though this song, and we even got some cheers from the back of the room. This guy walked past to take a seat in front of us. He was cute. I mean really cute; I couldn't take my eyes off him. He took a seat and stared right at me. I wanted to look away, but I couldn't. I've never had a guy look at me like that. Then he smiled at me. It was hard to concentrate on my singing. The song was over before I knew it. "You can put the microphone down now, Haley," said Shishie.

"Huh? Oh! That was fun," I put the mike back in it's holder.
He got up from his recliner and went out on the deck, but not before he gave me a playful look and another smile. "I would say that is an open invitation," said Shishie. She didn't have to tell me twice. I think Malina and Sabrina are starting to rub off on me. His name was Beck Williams and he told me that he loved my voice. He wanted to know so much about me, how did I learn to sing so well, what were my favorite things to do, were had I traveled. I was thrilled to discover that he was also a writer. He wrote for the Pleasantview Press, had articles in several magazines, and was working on a novel. I found him so easy to talk to as we explored the things we had in common. I found myself yawning, try as I might to stop it. It was getting late and I was tired. I didn't notice the woman who had come out on the deck.

"Beck?" she inquired.
He turned to face her, but didn't seem to know her.

"Yes. Can I help you?" It was obvious that his eyes were traveling all over her body. There was plenty to see.
"Last week you were at Pamela's party?"

"Yes, I was."

"I'm Groovy. I was there too. Pamela wanted me to meet you. I actually saw you there, but when Pam finally got around to introducing me, you had already left."
"I do remember Pam saying she wanted me to meet someone. I had to get up early the next day so I couldn't stay long. Groovy...that's a unique name."

"It gets better. My last name is Citrus. Mom was a new-age hippie."

Beck laughed. "Groovy Citrus...it sounds drinkable. I won't be forgetting your name."
"Groovy, stepped closer to Beck. "Why don't we go down and dance for a bit, then come back up here for a soak in the Jacuzzi. You can buy swimwear here. It will be a very relaxing way to for us to get to know one another."

My heart fluttered, and not in a good way. What was coming was obvious.
"It was nice meeting you, Halle. You have a great voice and I enjoyed your song," said Beck. I didn't bother to correct his mispronunciation of my name. It would just make Groovy smugger. His voice seemed to fade away as I looked at her.

Her face spoke volumes: Wonderful talents, but you could sing like an angel, write like a poet, and he would still walk over you to get to me. You just don't have the packaging to reel him in. I do. He's mine.
And that was that.

I was stunned, drained. I had soared to an emotional high and fallen into a pit. I trudged to the banister, moving to unmuddle my emotions.
While talking to Beck, I had all these images popping up in my mind: us eating in a restaurant, walking arm-in-arm on a beach, brainstorming on stories, snuggling on a sofa. It all evaporated with big eyes, big hair, and a barely there orange dress.

Staring into the flame, I had a sudden urge for a long pointy stick...and marshmallows...and a box of graham crackers...chocolate bars...yes, lots and lots of chocolate.

Ugh, I needed to be with my friends right now.
The second floor was empty. It wasn't what I wanted to see right now--an empty room--when I was feeling so lonely. I thought I'd check the dance floor first. They were probably dancing again. I think I should have checked the bar instead. I didn't need to see this. I could tell myself that it just wasn't meant to be, but it didn't stop me from wanting to knock her on her orange-citrus rear end. Shishie had no trouble finding a dance partner. I was wondering where Gimpy and Marisa were. I assumed they were probably in the bar having a drink. I didn't expect them to casually strut out of a storeroom closet. Gimpy simply shrugged his shoulders at me. I shrugged back. Ahh...love--at least someone was gettin' it. Malina seemed to be still doing well with Chester. Something had been bugging me at the back of my mind as soon I came down here. Where was Benjamin? I think I saw him last in the barroom. I set off to find him. I was ready to leave the club actually, and was considering calling a cab, but I thought I would find Benjamin first.

Unfortunately we must conclude this part of our documentary. Due to this unforeseen event we are extending it with another episode. Check back soon.
