After four seasons Margarite Smithson's daughters Lily and Rose had still not managed to find a husband and both she and her husband were starting to grow weary. "I want for you girls to rest, for dinners at Woolbridge Hall are known to go well past midnight." Margarite ordered. "I shall return in an hour to wake you so you can dress for dinner." She stated her arms crossed in annoyance, her peace stated Margarite turned and left the room, knowingly locking the door from the outside to ensure that her rebellious twin daughters did not leave their quarters.
"She locked the door!" Lily cried in shock.
"She must be serious," Rose replied with a dour look, "I over heard mother and father talking this morning," Rose began her heart somersaulting within her breast. "If we do not find an acceptable suitor Father is going to send for Johnathon Malcolm and Frederick Peters." She breathed in nervous disgust.
"His partners!" Lily cried out, "Whatever for?" She sighed.
"Most likely he has plans to unite us with them." Rose whispered suddenly going silent as she heard footsteps in the hall just outside their door.
"We cant marry them, they are old and fat." Lily whispered in hushed tones.
"Possibly Sarah could assist us," Rose offered.
"She is a countess now, so it is a great possibility that she could sponsor us, that would surely help us find husbands." Lily agreed, "Now to escape," She quietly giggled, pulling a pin from her golden hair.
"Maybe we should rest like mother said." Rose suddenly interjected.
"You can if you wish, but I am not tired in the least." Lily replied.
"You remember what happened this last summer," Rose murmured.
"How could I forget," Lily replied with a blush as she remembered how Matthew Debrock, the Duke of Woolbridge had come upon she and Rose while they lounged in their knickers after a leisurly swim in the pond.
Lily was enjoying the warmth of the waning sun while her sister lay in the shallows of the pond when they heard the footsteps. "Oh my goodness," Matthew had cried out in nervous surprise as he caught sight of the two Smithson girls, hurriedly he turned and briskly stalked away from the inappropriate sight.

Both Lily and Rose had been completely taken aback, with flushed cheeks from the embarrassing event they hurriedly dressed and rushed from the pond, silently hoping that Matthew Debrock would not inform their parents.
"Time to awaken," Margarite called out, to her sleeping daughters, unaware that her daughters only feined slumber. Lily and Rose had changed their minds about going for a walk about the Woolbridge Hall gardens at the rather embarrassing memory of their previous visit, yet still rebelled against their mothers orders to devise a plan to catch a husband. All that was left now was calling to order a meeting with the Husband Hunters, the nickname they had given the group of four young heiress's while in prepatory school. Matthew Debrock had known that the Smithson girls had arrived earlier that day and was concerned with what actions he would be witness to this time. Especially after their last visit some three months earlier, for his dearest friend Charles Franklin, Earl of Bridgeton's wedding to the young Sarah Billings. Fortunately he'd managed to avoid seeing the family, yet as dinner came ever near he had begun to worry of how he would ever look into Mister Smithsons eyes after having seen the American Shipping Magnate's daughters in their state of undress. "Shannon, you look positively radiant in that blue gown." Lily exclaimed as she warmly hugged her friend from prep school.
"I must say not nearly as beautiful as you," Shannon laughed with feined jealousy as she gazed upon Lily.
"Rose you must tell me where I can purchase that beautiful dress," Sarah whispered.
"Mother had this made for me," Rose replied earnestly, feeling a bit uncomfortable in the shimmering Teal gown, with it's low cut bodice and cap sleeves. "I would much rather be in Lily's golden gown." She whispered with a frown.
With their greetings completed the four girls sat upon the lush couch and chair in the Debrock's formal parlour. "I must say, marriage most definately suits you Sarah." Rose mused as she caught a glimpse of her usually shy friends glowing demeanor.
"Yes it is quite wonderful," Sarah sighed, warmth creeping into her cheeks as she thought of all the things her husband had shown her over the last month few months.
"Is it true that you are soon to be married to Andrew Debrock?" Lily questioned Shannon slyly.
"Well he hasnt officially proposed, but I do believe that it is soon to come." Shannon bubbled happily.
"Well I officially call to order a meeting of the husband hunters," Rose whispered abruptly, "For it is a matter of dire importance," She added her green eyes gleaming with concern.
"Oh my, what ever for," Sarah questioned with alarm.
"It seems Rose over heard our mother and father discussing plans to bring two of fathers partners to London if we do not soon find husbands," Lily breathed out ruefully.
"Hmmm..." Shannon sighed tossing her hands into the air, "This could not be good." She finished lost in thought.
"Sarah, would you be able to sponsor us," Rose questioned unexpectedly, catching the young woman off guard.
"Well...I..." Sarah stammered .
"I believe that part of our problem with finding a suitable match is the lack of a sponsor." Lily added, pinning Rose with a glare over her impatience.
"I suppose I could," Sarah mused as she nervously ran her hands over the purple silk of her gown. "But I am not exactly the best choice," she continued, her deep blue eyes clouded with concern.
"What about Duchess Debrock," Shannon suddenly cried out, "with her sponsorship I am sure that the peerage would be more than happy to accept you." She finished dropping her voice suddenly as voices became audible behind the closed door.

"Shannon is quite excited to be re-united with the Smithson sisters," Andrew exclaimed to the group of gentlemen, wishing to break the deafening silence that filled the room.
"I myself am quite pleased to see them again, especially Miss Rose," Arthur added enthusiastically a faint blush creeping into his neck as he wondered if she would remember him after nearly four years.
"And how do you feel about being re-united with the lovely Lily Smithson?" Charles boomingly laughed out, knowing that his dear friend Matthew had been up in arms all week about their arrival. Especially after his last encounter with the twins. "I have absolutely no interest in either girl," Matthew snarled unhappily especially since he could not seem to get his mind off of Lily and the memory of how she had looked in her soaking wet undergarments. How the thin linen had clung to her round hips and her damp golden hair, several shades darker from the wetness had framed her soft face and highlighted her enchanting blue eyes. "And if I were not interested in partnering with their father, I would not have invited the family." He finished gulping down his glass of brandy, wanting his friends and brother to drop the subject entirely. "It's not like they are heathens," Andrew added with a sly grin. "Besides, had you not been meandering about the gardens you would never have even come across them." He joked knowing that it would frustrate his brother. "What do you speak of," Arthur questioned un-aware of the event that had taken place. "It is my garden to peruse," Matthew snarled to Andrew in reply, "This past June, I came across the Smithson sisters while swimming," Matthew reluctantly explained to Arthur, still fuming at the groups attempts to corner him.
"Swimming does not seem so horrid," Arthur replied finishing his own drink and turning to get another.
"No, not usually..." Matthew relented taking a hearty swig from his glass, "Unless you come across two young ladies doing so in their undergarments." He finished wishing he were closer to the bottle so he could drown out the mixture of emotions that enveloped his mind at the prospect of being in such proximity of the Smithson girls.
"Oh dear," Arthur laughed out feeling slightly woozy from the two glasses of Brandy he had consumed. "Although had it been I," he slurred, "I would rather have enjoyed seeing Miss Rose Smithson in her undergarments..." His response warranted stunned silence from the group of men.
"So I take it you are smitten with her?" Arthur's brother in law, Charles eventually laughed. "Possibly I could apply to Sarah for you," he jokingly offered.
"I will apply to miss Smithson on my own accord thank you," Arthur snapped out, suddenly embarrassed by his revelation. "Although you could apply to Shannon for a moment between Lily and Matthew," He laughed to Andrew.
"Take care what you speak of Arthur," Matthew snarled.
"Admit it," Arthur snipped, "You are just as much in love with Lily as I am with Rose, or else you would not react so to their presence." Arthur pointedly replied to Matthew as the realization suddenly struck him.
"I...You..." Matthew stammered.
"I believe it is true," Andrew exclaimed smuggly.
"Why else would he be so against her," Charles added with a hearty laugh, "I believe I should apply to my wife for a moment between them." He finished.
"I would not be caught dead with her," Matthew failingly argued.
"Maybe not, but you would most certainly be willing to find out what is underneath..." Before Andrew could continue the conversation was interupted by the maid, informing them that dinner was served.

Matthew's run of luck ran out as he made his way into the dining room, for there stood Miss Lily Smithson. He sucked in a deep breath at the vison of her, looking like a golden goddess in a silk gown that seemingly matched her hair color. Part of him desired to rip the gown away and feast upon her creamy skin while the other half, urged him to put as much distance between them as remotly possible. Then she smiled and at once he knew, no other would ever occupy his thoughts as so, which disturbed him all that much more. Dinner that evening was the most uncomfortable it had been for Matthew since he was younger and had been seated across from Oxfords Headmaster. He had found it nearly impossible to remove his gaze from her and even more difficult to suppress the laugh when she heartily thanked the servant as he placed a dish before her, despite it having been an unnacceptable gesture. To him, Lily was far more than just a beautiful young woman, he found during the evenings conversation that she was a kind hearted person, who believed that all were equal no matter their standing within society. "Lily, you do not speak to the help," Margarite Smithson quietly scolded her daughter when the manservant was out of range.
"Why ever not mother, I would thank you if you brought me a plate of food." Lily argued defiantly.
"Do not dare continue Lily," Her mother threateningly snarled, "Or I shall send you to your quarters for the rest of the evening," Margarite finished, pinning Lily with an angry glare that seemed to shrivel the young woman on the spot, causing the laugh that Matthew had fought so diligenty to hold back to burst forth at the comical argument.

Rose Smithson sat at the far end of the ballroom, as she awaite her sisters return from wherever she had disapeared to, when she became aware of a presence. "Miss Smithson," his voice was deep, filled with unspoken emotion, shyly she brought her gaze up from the floor to rest upon his face. "Arthur!" Rose squealed joyously, as the recognition took hold, "Oh my you look absolutely handsome," She breathed suddenly aware of the blush that crept into her cheeks as she thought of the terrible crush she had once had on Sarah's older brother. Rose couldnt believe her eyes here before her stood a rather handsome and much matured gentleman, for the last time she had seen him he was quite thin, so much so that his clothes had hung from his body. Her only point of recognition his eyes, the stunning sapphire that had been spurred her initial crush. She flew from the chaise and into his awaiting arms, without thinking of the repercussions of her actions if someone were to happen upon them. "I thought you were still at school." She laughed out as she hugged him warmly.
"I have completed my studies," Arthur beamed, relishing the way Rose felt in his arms and silently wishing she would never leave his grasp. "You have most definately grown up," He stammered shyly pushing back from her as voices approached. "Come dance with me?" He questioned hopefully, his heart soaring above the clouds as she enthusiastically agreed.
"I did not know that you had arrived," Rose murmured as turned to grab her clutch bag from the couch. "Why did I not see you at dinner?" She questioned as they began to walk towards the dance floor. Arthurs stomache was in knots as he held her as close as propriety would allow as they spun about the dance floor. "I am sorry for not having come to you earlier," He whispered over the roaring of his heart in his ears. "I was detained by an urgent matter of business with the locomotive shop." He explained into her brilliantly smiling green eyes.
"Oh yes, now that you are done with college you will take over your fathers business?" Rose exclaimed knowingly.
"Yes, and I am in a posistion to find a wife," he whispered knowing that it was not proper discussion material, while he silently prayed that Rose would understand that he meant for her to be in that position.
"Oh, I hadn't thought of that," She murmured sadly, "Have you any leads?" She added silently hoping he hadnt.
Arthur smiled broadly at her comment hearing the disappointment in her tone, "Well there is one..." He whispered close to her ear, which he for a moment thought, was not such a good idea. For being so close to her he could smell her perfume and soap, along with her distinctive scent, that combined into an intoxicating mixture that made him very aware of how close to him she was.
"Who is it," Rose quietly murmured.
"You..." He whispered, breaking their embrace as the song ended. "That is if you are interested," he smiled.
"I had no idea you thought of me as such," Rose sighed in excited bewilderment, as she placed her hand over her heart that had seemingly jumped into her throat at his remark.
"Surely you have," Arthur replied in amazement, "But you have not answered," he added shyly his heart doing somersaults as he impatiently awaited her reply.
"I..." she stammered nervously, "We havent even courted..." Rose added nervously as her mind spun about as if she'd too much wine.
"Please Rose, if you want a courtship I will give it to you," Arthur was beginning to grow nervous that she would decline him. "If you do not feel as I then let me know." He pleaded sadly.
"Of course I care for you," Rose giggled happily. "I would be honored to accept your courtship," She finally stammered feeling lightheaded at the prospect of being wooed by Arthur Billings. Although he was not of the peerage, he was wealthy beyond compare and she was sure her mother would find him a good match.

Matthew glanced about the ballroom nervously, in silent search of Miss Lily Smithson. "Where is she?" he questioned himself in agitation. Frustrated that he been incapable of getting her out of his mind all evening, irritated that she had occupied his thoughts these last three months. Finally when all hope seemed failed that she would arrive he stepped onto the veranda, his heart skipping a beat as caught sight of the vision. Lily Smithson stood in all her ethereal glory at the edge, gazing over his lands. Silently he crept up behind her, quietly wondering what she thought of so intently. "Good Evening Miss Smithson," He greeted startling her by the way she jumped and turned to face him.
"Do you make it a habit to sneak up on your guests," She breathed out agitatedly, keeping her gaze focused to the ground. Lily couldnt explain it, but Matthew caused her heart to do an extra beat and whenever he was around butterflies fluttered about her stomach.
"Not usually," Matthew gently laughed, as he fought the desire to grab her into his arms. She was so close he could smell the soft floral perfume that she wore, with undertones of citrus. "That is a lovely and quite befitting scent you wear," he murmured huskily as he thought of how the citrus matched her hair and gown.
"That is by far not an appropriate form of discussion," Lily shyly whispered.
Unable to control himself anylonger, Matthew reached out to Lily and pulled her into his embrace, noticing that her eyes were the most striking ocean blue, with a deep bronze encirling their green and sapphire irises reminding him of jewels the way they sparkled. Gently he skimmed his hand up the soft silken skin of her arm, with his free hand he applied just enough pressure to the middle of her back so as to push her body closer to his, the feeling of her warm body against his shattering the remainder of his self control. With fervent desire he pressed his lips to hers, gently coaxing Lily's mouth to yeild to his until with a groan of defeat she allowed him to explore the satiny skin of her inner cheeks. "You are so beautiful," He murmured drunk from her flavors.
Lily weakly pressed against Matthews rock hard chest until her limbs would no longer respond, she felt as if she were drunken in his embrace. His masculine scent mixing with soap and spice, and the intoxicating flavors of brandy, and musk drenching her very being until she felt so weak she doubted she could stand without support.
"Have you taken complete leave of your senses," Lily snarled when Matthew finally released her from his embrace and she came to her own senses. "I have never given you even a remote incling that I desired your affections," she lied hoping that it hit the intended target, her mind reeling with unknown desire and emotion. "Miss Smithson, I apologize for my indescretions," Matthew snarled, his tones reflecting the hurt she had inflicted upon him and for causing her regret for having purposely sought to injure him. "Obviously your flirtatious smiles and the way you flutter those strikingly long lashes in my direction every time I am near have been mis-interpreted." He finished with agitated injury before briskly turning to stalk off in the direction he'de come.
Lily stood on the veranda for several minutes allowing the cool autumn air to cool the fiery heat that scorched her very soul, along with the intent of entering after an acceptable amount of time to avoid the whispering of the guests. When she finally entered the ballroom she hurriedly excused herself under the pretense of a headache and went to her room.

**********
"Rose you would never guess what has happened," Lily cried out in exasperation later that evening when her sister made her appearance in their quarters. "I was standing on the veranda when the duke came out." her voice wavered as her stomached tightened at the memory. "Well what is it?" Rose questioned impatiently, unable to contain her good fortune, yet concerned with her sisters state of nerves. She had seen her leave the ball, yet was incapable of excusing herself from the festivities and now desperately feared what her sister was about to lament. "He commented on my perfume and then he KISSED me!" Lily squealed nervously.
"Oh my that is dire news indeed," Rose giggled.
"It's not funny Rose," Lily grumbled the memory of the kiss causing an unexplained heat to spread over her stomach.
"Fine dear sister," Rose lamented as she supressed a laugh. "What did you do," She snickered as her sister turned crimson.
"I yelled at him," Lily replied suddenly bursting into laughter at her heinous actions, "And accused him of losing his senses." She continued.
"You didn't," Rose laughed out sypathetically.
"I did and then told him that I had never given him any inclination that I might remotely desire his attentions." Lily finished crumpling into a heap upon the floor as she laughed so hard tears sprang from her eyes and rolled over her cheeks.
"Well what an eventful night we've had," Rose snickered "you have insulted the Duke of Woolbridge and I have found a suitor." She smiled as she sank to the floor with Lily, just as when they had been children. "WHO!" Lily cried out excitedly, amazed that her sister had kept something so important from her. "Arthur Billings, Sarah's brother." Rose replied with a gentle smile as she thought of him. "I had never suspected that he felt for me as such," She beamed.
"I am so happy for you," Lily commented "But when did these emotions come to be?" She wondered aloud.
"You knew of my horrible attraction to him four years ago," Rose lamented.
"Yes, I do remember but he is such a langly and frighteningly thin young man," Lily laughed.
"He was, but he has matured much over the years," Rose suddenly became defensive at Lily's comment.
"I do apologize," Lily genuinely replied at the sudden change in Rose's tone, "I am truly happy for you all though I do not know how I shall ever make ammends to Matthew." She finished as the door opened...

**********
Nervously Lily and Rose watched the door, silently praying that it wasnt their mother for if she were to find them awake at this late hour they would never hear the end of her lecture about how they would look with dark circles under their eyes and yawning all the day. Which would also mean that she would expect them to take another of her dreaded naps, when they could be filling that hour with adventure about the Woolbridge Hall grounds.
Neither Rose nor Lily realized they had been holding their breath until their lungs burned from lack of air that escaped with a gush as they set eyes upon Shannon Kirkpatrick. "I saw the light under the door and figured I would come to see you," Shannon bubble as quietly as her voice would go.
"We are just thankful you aren't our mother," Lily laughed out, relaxed that it was their friend.
"It could be just like old times, if Sarah were here," Rose sighed ruefully, "ever since she has been married we see hardly any of her." She finished with a frown.
"She has wifely duties perform now," Shannon giggled knowingly, "And if you ask me, by the way they look at eachother and find every opportunity to sneak away, I dont believe she is against them at all." She finished with a wink at Rose.
"Wifely duties, ah yes..." Rose grimaced, "I myself should never be comfortable in a mans presence," she sighed.
"I beg to pardon," Shannon laughed, "What was it that Arthur Billings said to you to make you blush so?" She laughed. "For I believe there is one man in which you would do anything." She finished with a playful smile.
"I WOULD NEVER!" Rose cried out, slapping her hand over her mouth as she realized just how loud the comment had been.
"Rose has wonderful news indeed," Lily added pinning her sister with a smoldering glare. "At least for her she will not have to marry one of fathers partners." She finished with a rueful smile, her mind twisting about her own failure of the evening. If only she had accepted him, Matthew was as fine a catch in the peerage as any, and was not a fortune hunter, yet she had rebuked his advances and insulted him.
"Arthur has requested permission to court me, and our father has agreed," Rose couldnt contain the blush that crept into her neck and cheeks. "But wait until you hear what has happened to our dear Lily," She added with a provoking grin.
"Oh hush yourself..." Lily scolded.
"Oh this is too good, I must hear it," Shannon prodded hopefully.
"The duke kissed her on the veranda," Rose answered giving Lily no other option but to explain.
"HE KISSED YOU!" now it was Shannon's turn to clasp her hand over her mouth.
"if you both promise to stop yelling I will tell you," Lily begrudgingly agreed, recieving an avid nod of aggreement from them both. Hesitantly Lily recounted the evenings events with embarrassment taking place of the humor from earlier in the evening.
"Oh my you insulted the duke," Shannon breathed in humor, "I know that he has been considered a rake, but I have never known him to take advantage of one of his guests," her mossy green eyes clouded. "I think he has feelings for you." She finished thoughtfully.
"Why ever would he," Lily argued, "Ever since he came upon Rose and I in our knickers he has made it quite evident that he cares little for us." She continued, her cheeks burning with fury. "I swear he goes out of his way to avoid me at least until tonight." She finished clasping her hands so tightly they turned white.
"Actually it all makes perfect sense." Rose interjected with a sly smile, "I couldnt help but notice that over the course of dinner he nary took his eyes off of you." She continued. "And when mother scolded you, it was he that laughed," She finished her eyes gleaming with excitement and joy. "If that is the case, than I have most definately ruined my chances of ever recieving his attentions again." Lily sighed feeling lower than she had earlier.
"We shall devise a plan for you to apologize in private," Shannon whispered excitedly, "I shall recruit Sarah and Andrew for their assistance." She finished.
"NO!" Lily cried out in dismay, "Not Andrew," she added quietly.
"Fine Sarah, but you know that she will have to recruit Charles, because it would never do to have one of us going to him without an escort." Shannon replied.
"Fine, Leave Sarah out of it," Lily hestated, "But this had best be good." She finished.

**********
A week later as Rose and Lily impatiently awaited Shannon and Sarah's arrival Margarite Smithson came to her daughters. "I have important news indeed," She stated to Lily. "I have recieved word that an old school friend of the duke's will be joining the party." She happily exclaimed, the wheels in her mind obviously working over time, "Baron Francois Le'fore will arrive later this afternoon, granted he has hit hard times but your fortune may well be enough to induce a union." Magarite finished.
"Isnt it true that he is a reknowned rake mother?" Lily argued.
"A man can change when he is in love," Margarite snapped.
"More along the lines of a man will temporarily change when there is a fortune involved." Rose whispered.
"Hush Rose," Margarite snarled at her other daughter. "A proper young lady does not speak such slander." She scolded, "Now Lily I expect you to be present when he arrives so that your father and I may properly introduce you." She finished before turning to glide away.
As their mother exited Shannon and Sarah entered, just in time to overhear Lily's comment. "I swear that woman will stop at nothing to procure an unhappy marriage," She growled.
"What ever do you speak of?" Sarah questioned innocently.
"I believe that Misses Smithson has finally got word of Baron Le'fore's upcoming arrival." Shannon added with a laugh.
"Yes!, and she expects for Lily to flirt and charm him into a union." Rose added sourly, not wishing her sister to be united with the rake.
"I have heard that a young womans reputation can be tarnished just by spending five minutes alone with him," Sarah added with a shudder.
"Which I fully expect my mother to organize, so as to secure a union," Lily dourly snapped, "I apologize but I must take a moment to myself," She added as she stood and walked into the orangery.
"According to Shannon, Miss Smithson is quite in arms over the events at the ball," Andrew innocently added, "She is terribly upset at what ever occured and wishes to apologize," He added truthfully unknowing of what had happened. Yet knowing it had to have been something terrible for his brother had systematically avoided the Smithson twins over the last week. "So now she adds injury to insult," Matthew snarled jumping from his chair, "How dare she go about spreading such scandolous rumors." He snarled unaware of his brothers lack of knowledge.
"I am sorry Brother, but I have not the slightest clue as to what you speak," Andrew quietly added, "All I know is that my beloved is quite upset with her friends lack of joy as of late." He finished.
"Surely you have heard all about the kiss!" Matthew snarled.
"No, not until now," Andrew choked out, as he suppressed a laugh, "But if your sour attitude is over a simple kiss then I suggest you re-evaluate your oppinion and go to her." He finished.
"Absolutely not!" Matthew argued, "She has insulted me to the highest degree and the sooner she is gone the better!" He finished as he stormed off.
"I am truly sorry Shannon, but my brother can be quite the mule when he is angry, and apparently she has severly injured his pride." Andrew sadly explained to his fiance.
"There has got to be something that can be done," Shannon fretted.
"Possibly we could coordinate a meeting, without either knowing," Rose added.
"It is possible, I could send for the maid to fetch him," Andrew added brightly, "But rather than have him come to me tell him to meet me somewhere." He thought aloud.
"She has an affinity for the Orangery," Rose stated with a smile,
"Yes, I will have her meet me in the orangery this evening," Shannon grinned conspiringly,
"And I will have Matthew meet me there, say around five," Andrew added silently praying that his brother would fall into the ploy.

**********
Little did they know that as they devised their plan Matthew had come quite unexpectedly upon the cause of his irritation.
"How dare you speak of this to anyone," He snarled unhappily his anger slowly melting under her soft gaze.
"I do not know of what you say," Lily rebuked wishing he would just calm himself so she could apologize.
"You have gone to Miss Kirkpatrick, who has informed my very brother!" He snarled, his anger resurfacing at her insolence.
"I have done no such thing, other than express my guilt at having insulted you," Lily lied her eyes unexplicably misting. "All I wish is to apologize, for having insulted you." She whimpered fighting a losing battle with the tears.
"How could you dare ever believe I would accept an apology from such an insolent female as you." He snapped, his composure fading when the tears began to fall.
"You...you..." She stammered over the tears, "You Mister DeBrock are an insufferable mule," She finally managed.
"I am sorry," Matthew genuinely apologized, as she buried her face into her hands.
"Why ever for," Lily sobbed out, "You have the world at your fingertips, whereas I must marry." Matthew didnt know what to do as her shoulders violently began to shake. "Now she expects me to flirt my way into a union with Baron Le'Fore," Lily hadnt meant for it to come out, especially to this ok of a man.
"You will stay away from him!" Matthew snarled suddenly his vision going red as he thought of Miss Lily Smithson with his debaucherous friend.
"At least I will be out of your presence," She snapped back, regaining composure.
"He is a rake and will bring nothing but shame to your family." Matthew explained softly, despite the anger that built within his very being.
"Explain that to my mother..." Lily stammered before running from the orangery.

**********
That afternoon as Margarite had said earlier she came for Lily and together the three met with Baron Fransois Le'Fore, much to Lily's dismay.
"Ah Baron, I wish to introduce you to my lovely wife Margarite and one of our daughters, Miss Lily Smithson." Michael Smithson greeted, unsure whether he was as interested in having this well known seducer as part of his family.
"The pleasure is all mine," Francois greeted warmly his thick french accent giving an aire of romance to each word that came from his lips. Still Lily was repulsed he was truly a handsome man, but she cared nothing for him, over the week since her insulting Matthew DeBrock she had found herself ever desiring of his affections. "Madame," Francois excused himself not without fixing Lily with a gaze that made her skin crawl.
"Baron," She whispered lamely wanting nothing more than to run from the room and be away from this man, her mind elsewhere as she thought of how horrid Matthew had been earlier.
That evening, Lily took her dinner in her quarters, much to the chagrin of not only her mother but the Baron and Matthew as well. When her mother came and requested a stroll through the orangery, Lily reluctantly agreed. "Come now daughter, it wont be so horrid," Margarite soothingly coaxed. "You will be a baroness." She added as if to change her daughters mind.
"Mother I care not for a title, all I wish for is love and happiness." Lily replied sadly her heart breaking as she silently thought that she may very well have ruined her chances of anything such.
"Unfortunately dear daughter," Margarite sighed. "A marriage is rarely completed with both, unless of course you are of the working class." She murmured sadly.
"I understand this Mother," Lily rebuffed, "yet I cannot in good mind take a husband who shall run about town with every woman who will take him into her bed." Lily snapped.
"A lady..." Margarite began,
"I know, a lady does not speak such slander," Lily interuppted.
"Your own father has his indescretions and yet as the dutiful wife I choose to look past them," Margarite snarled back in frustration. "If I were to think of every time he has strayed I would go positively mad," She continued. "It is a sad part of marriages, but it is not as if we are not without our wiles." She continued with a devious gleam. "Just ensure the first heir is his." She finished rudely.
"You are telling me that you yourself have been subject to indescretion," Lily breathed in disbelief. "I never said anything of the sort, I merely stated that we are not without our wiles." Margarite primly stated, before standing. "Ah here he is now, and I pray you are kind," Bringing Lily's attention to the door where a shadowed figure stood.
"Mother no..." Lily cried out in despair. "My reputation will be thoroughly ruined if you leave me alone with him." She pleaded with her mother recieving nothing but a brush as she walked away and ushered him in.

**********
"Miss Smithson," The baron greeted her as he sat extremely close without asking her permission.
"Good evening Baron," Lily replied cooly her mind spinning as she thought of all that her mother had said and wonder at why this meeting seemed so planned. Was her mother truly trying to ruin her reputation for the sake of a marriage, she thought to herself.
"It is a beautiful evening, yet not nearly as lovely as you." Francois stated with as much charm as he could muster with this abrasive young woman. He was used to women fawning over him, but not this young american girl, who seemed determined to ignore him.
Without a word she stood and went to face the pond from the glass atrium windows, "Your parents have agreed that our union would be most beneficial." Francois murmured as he grabbed her and pressed his lips to hers. "I do not know what you are accustomed to Baron, but do not EVER touch me again!" Lily replied with disgust, as she pushed him away.
"Ah but you are mistaken, for your father has agreed that next month we shall be wed," He smiled grimly catching her off guard. "So it is best that we get familiar with one another now," His exoctic turqouis eyes gleaming wickedly, matching his villanous tone.
"I will never marry you," Lily cried out in surprise and disgust, realizing that her mother had purposfully set this up to force a marriage that she knew her daughter would not go for. She didnt know where to go or what to do, so she ran to the only place she could think of, the pond. Where Lily let free the hot tears that burned her eyes and sobbed as she never had before.

**********
After dinner was completed Matthew retired to his quarters, his mind reeling. He had over heard Margarite and Micheal Smithson's discussion just after dinner. He knew he must act quickly or he would be risking the loss of Lily forever and he just could not bare to think of her married to such a man as Francois. Truth be told, he only remained friends with the man because he felt he owed him his life, after the Baron had rescued him from a disasterous attempted marriage. When the Young countess Madeline Brunswick had lied and stated she was carrying his child. It had been the baron who had devised the plan to prove that she was lying. He felt a fool for having not regarded her earlier, that's when he knew what must be done.... Matthew promptly made his way to his mother's private parlour where he found her sitting by herself. "Mother I have to speak with you immediately," He grumbled. The duchess and he had never truly been close, and he knew what he was about to say would truly go poorly.
"Well out with it," Eleanor snarled with unease.
"I have found my bride," He stated primly.
"So you've chosen Miss Carlisle," She beamed happily. "She will be a good match, and her father is third cousin to the king," She added.
"No mother, I have not chosen her," He replied bracing himself for what would come next.
Eleanor DeBrock narrowed her eyes upon her son, who looked exactly as his father, if it were not to be Miss Carlisle, who else could it possibly be... Suddenly her eyes grew wide with displeasure, as she remembered the night of the ball, when her son had come from the Veranda, followed shortly after by the American girl. "Have you lost your senses?" She growled threateningly. "You are a Duke and are therefore required to marry accordingly." She snapped.
"No mother, actually I have quite come to them," Matthew calmly replied, "I am going to marry Miss Lily Smithson, no matter your disregard." He added daringly. "And if I hear of any negative comments from you towards or about her I swear I shall send you away," He threatened pinning the frail older woman with his gaze.
"I will not stand for this!" She cried out in disgust, "You are of a pure lineage and I will not have you pollute the future Heirs with American trash..." She screamed out, her face turning crimson with fury.
"My decision has been made," Matthew finished setting his jaw as he stood and left the fuming duchess in his wake. Matthew had looked everywhere for Lily with no luck in finding her, until he came across Rose just outside their quarters. "Rose I beg of thee, please can you tell me where Miss Lily has gone?" He pleaded with her hoping that she was aware of her sisters location. "Last I saw of her she was in the orangery with the Baron," Rose answered with disgust, "Please Sir, you must help her for our mother and father have made an arrangement." She continued suddenly breaking into a fit of tears. Matthew rolled his eyes, was he destined to deal with every females tears today? he silently wondered.
"I wish to offer her a choice in that matter," He whispered hoping that if he could gain Rose's regard that she would help him and handing her his handkerchief.
"Are you sure she will have you?" She questioned wiping the tears away from her eyes with the soft cotton.
"Not entirely, for I have truly acted as an ass." He replied, "But if I could just speak with her," he added, "I am sure I could make ammends." He finished downcasting his eyes.
"I shall be more than happy to apply to her senses for you," Rose breathed out, "Yet mother has her heart set on a marriage to the vile Baron." She whimpered.
"I shall search the gardens for her, and you the house," Matthew ordered suddenly. "And please speak of this to no one." He added his heart pounding within his breast as he began to imagine the worst.
"Where should I bring her if I find her?" Rose questioned just before they seperated.
"Wherever you believe would be best," Matthew replied turning to face her.
Rose stood in thought for several moments before it suddenly occured to her, "If I find her, I shall tell her to meet me at the pond at midnight." She blurted out excitedly.
"I shall be there," Matthew replied, hiding a grin as he thought of how appropriate it would be, to end his torture at the very point where it had began some three months ago.

**********
Eleanor DeBrock sat fuming in her parlour when her maid, Catherine entered. "Fetch me Miss Lily Smithson," the duchess ordered, her mind working over time as she pondered her next step.
"Yes Mistress," Catherine replied stoicly, wondering what was going on.
As she made her way towards the kitchen she came upon Lily, whose eyes were red rimmed. "Umm, Miss Smithson," Catherine began, feeling sorry for whatever had made the young woman so upset. "Duchess Debrock has requested your audience," She murmured sadly.
"Whatever for?" Lily questioned in surprise, hoping that her mother had not yet spoken of the illregarded prospective union.
"I am unsure Miss," Catherine answered nervously, "Although she was quite upset after the duke visited her." She added hoping to shed some light on the situation.
Lily could hardly believe her ears, whyever would the duchess wish to see her especially in regards to the duke, unless he had decided to tell her of the incident on the veranda.
Solemnly she made her way into Eleanor's parlour, "You requested me?" She barely whispered fearing what would soon come.
"Yes," Eleanor made no attempt to with hold the irritation in her voice. "The most alarming news has reached me!" She continued, narrowing her water green eyes upon the young woman.
"It seems my son, Matthew has fallen for your flirtatious charms," the duchess snarled as she stood.
"I do not know of what you speak Duchess," Lily replied in confusion, stepping back as the dour duchess came towards her.
"He has come and told me you are to be united," Eleanor continued clenching her hands into fists to keep them from wrapping about Lily's neck, "And I will not have it," She finished irritably.
"I assure you I know nothing of this," Lily stammered angrily.
"So you dare to call the duke a liar?" The duchess hollored.
"No your ladyship, I just say that he has not spoken of such to me." Lily replied firmly through clenched teeth.
"Well when he speaks to you," Eleanor calmed a bit, as she saw the earnesty in Lily's face, "You will decline him, or I shall ensure that you and your family never makes a match in the peerage," she threatened. "No leave my sight, you disgusting vixen." She finished as she turned and stalked off, leaving a thoroughly stunned Lily behind.

**********
Stunned, hurting and heartbroken Lily returned to her quarters wanting for the whole day to have been a nightmare. Quietly so as not to awaken her sister she entered the room, nearly fainting when Rose spoke. "I have been looking for you all evening," Rose scolded. "And with the vile Baron about I was worried he had taken your virtue," she whimpered as she patted the seat beside her on the small lounge.
"No, although he did try and kiss me," Lily sighed grateful to sit. "This has been a horrid day indeed," She whimpered as everything struck her.
"I know, mother has been quite underhanded," Rose consoled her sister.
"You've no idea, Rose." Lily lamented, "But it isnt just that," She added tersly, "It all started with the duke," She sighed fighting a fresh wave of tears. "He came upon me shortly after I left Sarah, Shannon and you this morning." She began sadly, "I attempted to apologize which he refused to accept and then I made the error of telling him mothers plans." Lily sniffled sadly, "You know what his response was?" She questioned unhappily.
"No but I am sure you are going to tell me," Rose sypathetically smiled.
"He ordered me to stay away from the Baron," Lily cried out sadly.
"I believe he has reason too feel as such," Rose whispered reassuringly.
"Why ever should he," Lily snapped irritably, "Especially now, for mother and father have made plans for me to marry the Baron next month." Lily's frustration was suddenly replaced with heartache. "Then tonight as I made way back to our room, The maid informed me that the duchess wished a audience." She continued nervously, wondering if she should continue.
"I can hardly understand why," Rose exclaimed in surprise.
"Apparently the duke has told her that he intends to be united with me," Lily scowled. "I tried to tell her he has not spoken with me of any such arrangement, and she accused me of calling him a liar." Her anger at the accusation was apparent by the way she flailed her hands wildly about. "Then she insisted that if he asks me I should refuse him!" Lily's final comment was enough, suddenly she burst into tears, "I do not know what to do rose," She sobbed into her hands. "I dont wish to be married to the baron, yet I do not believe I could marry for anything but love," She finished.
"It is quite a predicament," Rose sighed out, understanding her sisters heartbreak. "But I have spoken with Matthew, and he is genuinely concerned." She whispered, "He has applied to me, wishing my good oppinion and in light of these events," Rose paused knowing what she would say next would not be recieved well. "It may very well be for the best," She finished nervously.
"If I were to accept him, the Duchess has sworn an oathe that she will ruin our family and personally ensure that we never make a union of breeding." Lily sighed, surprising Rose by her lack of frustration.
"She could do no such thing if you were to marry him, not without ruining her own." Rose replied, "Please just go to him, hear him out," She pleaded with Lily.
"I've no other option do I?" Lily questioned herself more than her sister.
"Not unless you wish to be married to the baron," Rose sighed sadly.
"Very well, I shall arrange a meeting with him tomorrow," Lily quietly agreed.
"No you must see him tonight, I have arranged the meeting for midnight at the pond." Rose suddenly ordered her sister.
"TONIGHT!" Lily cried out, "I just want this day to end." She finished.
"And it shall, with hope better than it began." Rose whispered as she hugged her sister.

**********
Matthew waited nervously by the pond, fearing that Lily would change her mind and not come despite her sisters message that she had agreed. Fearfully he turned his head towards the sound of footsteps coming along the path, worried that it was not Lily who came upon him. He sighed in relief when he saw her there, his heart soaring as he set eyes upon the lovely young woman who's golden hair gleamed in the moonlight. "I..." Lily began, not knowing what to say.
"Shh, just let me," Matthew interupted as he gazed into her eyes. "I have been a fool, and today I realized just how so," he began, silently willing his thoughts of their kiss a week earlier, away so he could focus on her. "I took advantage of you and when you tried to apologize to me for a well deserved insult, I stubbornly refused." He continued, "In truth it wasnt until I over heard your parents and the baron making plans for a wedding that I realized just how mulish I have been." He breathed, his heart beating wildly and his blood racing through his veins.
"Sir, I must tell you something," Lily attempted to no avail, her heart shattering as his pale green eyes fixated upon hers.
"Lily I believe I have loved you since the first moment I met you," Matthew ignored her and plundered on, "It is true I have sought every reason to force my mind from you, found every flaw to ignore my own heart but I can no longer bare it," suddenly he took her chilled hand into his warm palm, the simple touch sending shivers of warmth through Lily's entire being. "I understand you may not love me as I do you, but please I beg of you, allow me to be the man you marry," His words were so genuine and heartfelt Lily was at a loss of words. "I could never stand to see you married to the Baron, for he could never cherish you as I shall, never want you as I do." Matthews words stung Lily's soul and brought tears to her eyes, as he stood there baring himself to her. "Lily Smithson, Please end my torment, agree to be my wife." He finished staring soulfully into her and catching her breath within her throat. It was then that Lily realized how very much she cared and loved him, then that she knew never in her life could she meet another that would make her as happy as Matthew could. "We will argue every day," She murmured.
"I shall let you win," Matthew replied, "At least most of them," he added with a gentle laugh.
"I need to think about this," Lily replied "I shall call for you when I know my answer." She finished.
"Very well, I shall impatiently await your answer." Matthew relented, unsure of what to think or do in the situation.

**********
The next day everyone had gone into town for a festival and been caught in a vicious thunder storm that kept them away from Woolbridge Hall. For Lily this gave her the opportunity to think, about her response to the Duke's proposal. As she readied herself for bed that evening she was quite surprised to hear a knock upon her door, curious as to who it could be she opened it, finding Matthews Manservant John standing there. "Yes?" She questioned quizzically.
"Master Debrock would like to see you," John replied stoicly, unphased by her state of undress.
"Well I must dress," Lily demurred "I shall meet him in the formal parlour in say fifteen minutes," She stated plainly.
"No he has given me strict orders to bring you to him immediately." John argued taking her arm and guiding her towards the staircase.
Hesitantly she obeyed, her mind buzzing as she thought of what would happen if her mother were to find out that she had been in the company of a man in anything less than fully clothed.
When they arrived at the third floor, she stared in disbelief as John scratched rather than knocked upon the grand double doors before opening them and ushering her in. Lily stood in awe of the lavishly decorated room that was nearly three times larger than her own. "Ah you have come," Matthew exclaimed as he stepped out from a door to her left. Lily could barely contain the blush that crept up her chest and into her cheeks as she noticed that Matthews gaze had rested upon her. "I had no idea you were sleeping," He apologized thickly, his voice unusually deep.
"I tried to tell John, but..." Lily attempted.
"Yes he is a great help and always follows orders," Matthew exclaimed huskily as he took her hand into his.
The simple touch sent her heart soaring and a warmth began to spread through her limbs, Lily felt intoxicated standing there in his gaze.
Before she knew what was happening their lips were joined and Matthew had effortlessly lifted her into his arms, where he proceeded to carry her to the large bed. Lily's senses were muddled, she knew it was wrong to be hear in Matthews room, laying on his bed and yet she couldnt tear herself away from him. Each honey sweet kiss inebriated her senses even more until she felt as if there was no one and nothing in the world but them. Gently he stroked her arms before moving to the delicate buttons of her night robe, which with expert agility stood no chance under his nimble fingers.
"Tell me to stop lovliest Lily," Matthew murmured into her mouth, wanting her to allow him to do all he had desired for so long. "All you have to do is say," He growled through the haze of his lust.
"I dont want to stop," Lily breathed between fervent kisses, despite the embarrassment and knowledge that if they went anyfurther she would no longer be innocent...
When the sun rose early the next morning, Lily awoke to the gentle sounds of Matthews slumbered breathing, with a blush of shyness she quietly slid from under the heavy bed clothes and tiptoed towards the armoir, where he robe and night dress lay in a crumpled heap. Silently she slipped them on and left careful to close the door so as not to wake Matthew, she felt aglow in the after math of their lovemaking and could barely contain the smile on her face. She smiled broadly as she remembered how tender he had been and looked forward to this evening when she would at last give him her answer.

**********
Matthew awoke late in the day to find his bed empty, part of him wished she was still there with her silky golden locks fanned over the pillow, whereas he knew that until they were married she could not be, when he suddenly realized she had not given him an answer. "When did she have a chance, I nearly attacked her the moment she came through the door," He thought to himself. With an unusual amount of enthusiasm he rose and went about his dressing routine before heading downstairs in search of his beloved. "What is wrong?" Matthew questioned in alarm as he reached the guest wing and found Rose crying in the hall just outside her and Lily's quarters.
"She is gone, just disappeared." Rose stammered through sobs.
"Who!" Matthew questioned suddenly feeling as if someone had punched him the stomache.
"Lily, she told me she was going to the stables to feed sugar cubes to the horses," Rose whimpered, "I said I would meet her there shortly but when I got there the stable boy said he hadnt seen her!," once more Rose Smithson flew into a state of hysterics. "I just know he has taken her," she sobbed out.
Matthew at once knew that Rose could not be mistaken, for even though Lily hadnt given him her word, he knew that she loved him. "I will go after her," He snarled angrily.
"How can you possibly know where he would have taken her?" Rose whimpered sadly.
"There is only one place he could possibly go," Matthew narrowed his eyes, "Gretna Greene," He breathed quietly, hoping that it wasnt to late.
Matthew nearly toppled the household maid, Catherine as he tore furiously down the stairs. "Catherine what do you know of Miss Lily Smithson's disappearance?" He accusingly questioned her.
"Mistress Debrock has paid Baron Le'Fore a handsome sum to take her away from here," She stammered out sadly fearing the wrath of the duke and knowing her employment in the household would soon be ended.
"Catherine, pack my mothers things and tell her I want her gone from this house by the time I return," He had to calm himself as visions of choking his mother with her pearls danced before his eyes. "Tell her if she is not gone I shall ship her off to America with no funds." He snarled, "And inform the Smithsons, that their daughter Lily has been kidnapped by Baron Le'Fore and that I have gone to fetch her." He finished as he resumed his mission.
It was nightfall by the time Matthew reached Gretna Greene, nervously he glanced about the various buildings in hopes of seeing the Barons coach, to his dismay finding none such a place, until he reached the very last of the small blacksmith community. "I need a minister," Francois snapped at the barkeep.
"I be the preacher here," a scruffy man with shaggy brown hair and a filthy coat mumbled drunkenly.
"Good are you willing to perform a ceremony tonight?" Francois questioned doubtfully, hoping this man could for if he risked putting off the marriage anylonger Matthew was bound to show up. Francois had seen the way his friend had looked upon the girl who was currently locked in a room upstairs, and part of him felt badly for stealing her away, whereas the other part of him needed the money that the Duchess had paid him along with Lily's dowry and inheritance, because his father had squandered his away at clubs.
"I could for a price," The man agreed with an avid nod of his shaggy brown mop of hair.
"How much?" Francois questioned in mild nervousness.
"five pence and a round of ale," the minister stated.
"Fine, but I wont pay you until the ceremony is done." Francois agreed as he headed upstairs to get his bride.
"Get off me you filthy rat!" Lily screamed as Francois tried to take her arm.
"So our marriage is a few weeks ahead of schedule," He snarled dodging her blows, "Now listen hear, I dont care if you carry the bastard child of the duke of Woolbridge, you and I as agreed by your parents are going to marry." He snarled unhappily as her hand made contact with his cheek and she screamed that she had already given herself to another.
Just then Francois heard the door fling open and hit the wall, and before he could turn to see who it was Matthew flew at him, cursing and muttering as his fists pounded brutally into the Baron. "I told you to stay away from her you cowardly pig!" Matthew cried out as with a final blow Francois slunk off to nurse his wounds in defeat. "Lily are you alright?" Matthew questioned nervously as he checked her lovely face for marks.
"I'm fine Matthew," She stammered out weakly as the tears of fear and exhaustion streamed down her face.
"Hush now my sweet," Matthew soothed as he pulled her into his arms and gently caressed her shivering spine. "Now you must stay with me just a bit longer," He murmured soothingly. "For we must marry now," he stated. "Lily will you come downstairs and become my wife?" he questioned nervously, "But your mother..." Lily whimpered sadly.
"You never have to worry of her again," Matthew reassured her as he flipped open the box. "But we cannot go back unmarried, it would be your ruin," He coaxed.
That very evening in a borrowed old gown because her blue day dress was filthy Lily Smithson a twenty one year old American Heiress, married the only man in the world that could provide for her the love, comfort and joy that she had always desired and Matthew DeBrock, Duke of Woolbridge wed the girl of his dreams. The one who would forever keep him in his place and never let him become yet another pompous old windbag, especially if she managed to get him to swim in his knickers 80). The woman in whom he would spend the rest of his days looking forward to waking up beside and falling asleep with every night. Shannon Kirkpatrick, first Generation Irish American married her beloved Andrew Debrock, Vis-Count of Woolbridge on a chilly winter day, four months later. Rose Smithson and Arthur Billings were the last to wed, she decided she could wait while he had their own manor built on the lovely outskirts of London so she could be close to her beloved twin sister and her newest family member, her Niece Helena. Matthew, Lily and their daughter Helena, who has her fathers hair and eyes and fortunately her mother's good looks 80) Charles, Sarah and their son Chester Franklin.
Could there be a match between the franklins and the Debrocks someday???

It was a lovely story but I'm afraid you seem to have rather mixed your time periods. You said this is set in the Victorian period, and have clothed your sims accordingly, however details such as "seasons" are more suited to the Regency period. I commend you on your good story writing but I suggest you do a little research next time.
