Welcome to the first part of The College Years, spin-off of The Chronicles of the Carr Family. It is not necessary to read The Chronicles of the Carr Family before reading this series. I would recommend reading The College Years: Getting to Know You, which is a brief overview of the characters. Now that we have the boring stuff out of the way, let's get to the story! ---> After arriving at Sim State, Todd and Drew figured they were going to need some new clothes. As Drew put it, college was the time to define yourself and they weren't doing a good job in their clothes. So, the two of them loaded into Todd's Carr and head to the University shops. While, they were there, Todd decided to broach what he knew was going to be a delicate topic.
"Drew, can I ask you something?" Todd asked cautiously.
"Sure. You know you can ask me anything," Drew replied, shifting through the clothes rack.
"Do you think I'm good enough for your sister?"
"You know that I've always approved of you two together. Why do you ask?" Drew wondered what had brought this subject up.
"Well, I think I'm ready to take the next step with Jade..." Todd ventured.
"Do you think that's entirely appropriate to discuss with me?" Drew asked. He did not want to know about this.
"Well, I was going to go to your father about it but I know he's had a lot going on with MacKenzie lately. So, I thought I'd discuss it with you."
"You were going to dicuss woohoo and Jade with my father?!" Drew asked, astonished. That would take guts.
"No...I was going to ask about engagement."
"You want to MARRY my sister?" Drew was practically shouting.
"Not right away - once we graduate. But I am ready to make the commitment."
"I may think that you're entirely insane - you don't even know where you two will be in four years. But if Jade says yes, then I'm fine with it." Drew told Todd, as they left the store with a bundle of clothes.
"I think we should have a dorm party," Jimmy Hines said as they watched TV with an unwelcome visitor.
"What do you mean?" Drew asked, trying to make conversation.
"I think we should have a party - just those of us in the dorm," Jimmy replied, glancing purposely at the mascot.
"Sure - but let's let the girls plan it," Drew replied. He loved parties but he was not about to set up or clean up after one.
Jimmy was studying intently when he noticed Abbey sit down in the cafeteria. He cast glances in her direction from time to time. He had noticed her simple beauty during the first hall meeting. He couldn't help but wonder if a girl like her would ever go out with him.

Meanwhile, Abbey was busy stealing glances at Drew, who had his back to her. She had tried talking to him about their relationship, yet he had quickly stole away claiming to need new clothes or something. She wasn't sure how much longer she could stand being lead on.
Todd and Jade were adjusting quickly to living together. They were spending most of their time together - studying, watching TV, eating. Todd could see them living together in the future and he couldn't wait for Jade to know that. Each day, he was making arrangements for their third anniversary and the big day.

Jade was beginning to tire of Todd occassionally. She enjoyed spending time with him, yet occassionally felt as though she needed some "Jade" time - sometimes a girl wanted to be alone.
Jimmy and Drew were watching TV when Jimmy decided to bring up the topic of Abbey.
"Drew, you went to high school with Abbey, right?" He asked.
"Yeah. I did."
"Well, do you know if she has a boyfriend?" Jimmy asked. Drew thought for a minute.
"I don't think she does. Why do you ask?"
"Oh...no reason." Jimmy said and steered the conversation back to sports.
Todd had gotten dressed and was busy setting up the grill for hot dogs. He wasn't much of an outdoor cook but he wanted the anniversary to be special. He certainly didn't have much money and Jade hadn't eaten anything but cafeteria food since they'd been there. So, it seemed fitting that he should cook her dinner. Too bad the hot dogs came out slightly tinged. He decided to serve them anyways because Jade was coming towards him at that very moment. No time to make new ones. Jade ate away at her hot dog, despite them being burned. It was sweet that Todd had cooked for her. She still couldn't believe that they had been together for three years. Why was it that she could stay with the first guy she dated for three years but her father couldn't keep a wife for more than a couple of years? What did this say about her family?
"Something on your mind?" Todd interrupted Jade's thoughts.
"Nothing much...just thinking about my dad and the MacKenzie thing." she began. "I still can't get over how she just left him like that - like my mom."
"Graham's strong...he'll find love eventually," Todd consoled, practically reading her mind. "He has the things that makes him happiest - his kids until he does."
"I know you're right..."
"It's just that sometimes....sometimes...I feel like I'm a - " Jad began explaining, before a random streaker came up the stairs. Todd averted his eyes and waited for her to leave but she just kept dancing around. He knew he should've borrowed some money to take Jade off campus.
"I'm going to go lie down - I don't feel so well," Jade told Todd, kissing him on the cheek. "Thanks for dinner."
"You're welcome," Todd said after she left. "I love you."
Jimmy was never going to let the girls plan a party again. Amy had come up with the idea of a costume party. The guys had obligingly agreed. However, they did not agree to posing on the front lawn for a picture. Next party, the guys would be planning. Todd pulled Jade to the side after the picture.
"There's something I wanted to tell you at dinner last night." He began.
"What?" Jade asked, looking around, half expecting a streaker to come running by.
"I love you."
"Oh." Jade said, unsure of what to say in return. "I love you too."
Todd leaned towards her and their lips met.
The girls were hanging out upstairs. The party had died down and the four of them were trying to get to know each other better.
"He said what?!?!" Abbey squealed excitedly when Jade recounted that Todd had said those three special words.
"Wait - why aren't you estatic?" Mindy asked, looking at her friend.
"I am, it just seems - I don't know. It just doesn't seem right." Jade replies.
"What do you mean? How doesn't it seem right?" Amy asks.
"I don't know. Why do I deserve love?" Jade asked. The three girls looked at each other, unsure how to respond.
"I did it." Todd told Drew. He still wasn't used to the communal showers.
"You proposed?"
"No, I told her I love her."
"Did she say it back?"
"Yeah."
"Good. So, are you going to propose?"
"Definitely."
"Well, good luck." Drew told Todd, before heading out.
"Todd's seemed distant lately," Jade began.
"Distant how?" Amy asked.
"He's always busy and never has times to make plans with me. He wants to talk about something major tomorrow night on our date," Jade replies.
"Do you think he wants you in bed?" Mindy suggested.
"No - I think it's more that he wants to break up." Jade voiced her fears.
"Well, then you should beat him to the punch," Abbey said, a bit bitter over things with Drew.
"You think?"
"Jade - just be careful what you do." Amy told her, before heading to bed.
Todd and Jade were lying on the floor. Jade wasn't sure how they had ended up on the floor during their make out session but things seemed right.
"Todd?"
"Hmmm?" His eyes were closing.
"Do you ever wish things could stay just how they are now?"
"No, not really."
"Why not?" Jade asked, pushing herself into a sitting up position.
"Because - there's more to life than just right now."
"There's more to life thatn us? Is that what you really mean?" Jade asked, before leaving the room.
Todd wasn't even sure where that outburst had come from.
Jade found Todd in his room getting ready for their date. Tonight was the night that he wanted to discuss something major.
"Todd, we need to talk."
"They'll be plenty of time for that tonight. Can I meet you downstairs?" Todd asked. He still had to slip the ring into his pocket and he couldn't do that with Jade in the room.
"No. I think this is more urgent."
"Okay then." He said, taking her hands in his.
"I think we should take a break - we just entered college and there's so much to explore. I need to know that this is true and I feel I can find that out best by distancing myself from you." Jade said, pulling all of her courage together.
"If that's what you really want..." was all Todd could muster as she dropped his hands and left the room.
A few hours later, he sat in the rented carriage with Drew behind him.
"So, she said no." Drew stated.
"No - she didn't say no - she didn't even let me get to the date portion."
"Oh. What do you do now?"
"What can I do? I guess I do what most people do in college - I start fresh."
"Well, that could be a wonderous thing."
"Or not," Todd said.
In his mind, Todd pictured the garden he had helped plant specifically for Jade. It had cost him a fortune but at the time it had seemed worth it. Life didn't seem to be working out according to his plan. He could only hope that Jade was happy and things were working out for his parents.
