Hello and welcome to Chapter 7 of The Saga of Pleasantview. If you haven't read chapters 1-6, I would recommend doing so. This chapter is relatively lengthy. Enjoy!
~ Mortimer had passed away following the reappearance of Bella.
~ Don had realized his love for Nina.
~ Nina had realized her mistake in turning down Don's proposal.
~ Daniel had proposed to Kaylynn.
~ Many of the teenagers in Pleasantview had left for college. Kaylynn opened the box and looked at Daniel. She couldn't believe that he was giving her an out. There was no way that she was going to screw this up. She placed the ring on her finger and leaned across the table to give him a kiss. After returning home from Don's house, Brandi immediately called him up and told him that it was a mistake and they could not let it happen again. Don agreed and Brandi hung up the phone. Dina came downstairs to find Bella wearing maternity clothes that couldn't have been less flattering.
"Bella, can I talk to you about something?" Dina asked.
"Of course." Bella was completely out of her element. Last night she had come to realize that Dina could probably have her thrown out any day. "What is it?"
"Well, I couldn't hope but notice your clothes."
"What's wrong with my clothes?"
"Well, they're not very stylish. I was wondering if you'd want to go shopping for new maternity clothes. You can wear some of my old ones for now but I want to get some new ones as well."
"Sure." Bella replied. What was Dina up to? Bella and Dina went to the local clothing store and Bella couldn't believe how much she had missed shopping. DIna was right about there being cuter maternity clothing out there. Maybe Dina wasn't as bad as she had always pegged her to be. Bella and Dina had been sharing a bed since the other rooms were crowded with cribs and Alex. There was really no space for another bed in the house.
"Dina, can I ask you something?" Bella began. She didn't really want to discuss Mortimer but it had to be done.
"Yes?" Dina replied.
"When are you having Mortimer's will read?" Bella asked. She could only hope that it hadn't been updated.
"I was going to wait until after we both gave birth. I didn't feel that either of us needed to be thrown out on the streets during a pregnancy." Dina replied. She was worried that the will hadn't been changed. Don had been spending more and more time at Nina's with the children. Nina had noticed that he was a natural with his children. He was definitely trying to impress her. She had to admit to herself that it was working. Nina was beginning to see how they could make a family. Don couldn't believe how easy it was to simply be there. He would spend most of his days at Nina's house before heading home to work and sleep. He could only hope that Nina would forgive him and one day be willing to be with him. As Alex walked towards the taxi that would take him to college, he thought about the situation he was leaving behind. Dina was more of a mother to him than his own mother but only because she was the one that had been there the past few years. There was still a lot of catching up to be done with Bella and it looked like he wouldn't be getting the chance anytime soon. The twins' birthday came quicker than any one was ready for. Don still couldn't believe how quickly they were growing up. Jennifer Burb stared at her dresser. She couldn't believe that she would soon be giving birth to another child. It had just been the three of them until Lucy went to college. They were supposed to be looking forward to an empty nest, not adding another child to the family. A couple of weeks after the proposal, Kaylynn became Mrs. Daniel Pleasant. The whole town was invited, although most of Daniel's family refused to attend the wedding. Daniel and Kaylynn tied the knot in the middle of the day, with some of their closer friends in attendance. No one suspected a thing. As Kaylynn stared into Daniel's eyes, she realized that she was truly happy for once in her life. She was finally beginning a family - one of the things she had been aspiring to do. "Why are you still letting Bella live here?" Nina asked Dina as Cassandra hugged her mother for the first time in years.
"Because I don't technically know yet whether or not I can get rid of her." Dina replied.
"What do you mean?"
"The will hasn't been read." Dina stated. "Besides, she's not so bad. And after Mortimer's death and Alex leaving for college, I'm glad to have companionship."
"Why haven't you had the will read? Your dreams could be coming true as we speak!"
"It wouldn't matter anymore."
"What do you mean?"
"It just isn't the same without Mortimer. I loved him Nina." Dina admitted to her sister. Nina just stared back at her. "I can't believe you're really here!" Cassandra exclaimed as she stared at her mother. Bella didn't seem to have aged at all over the past ten years. If that were true, then Cassandra would be the close in age to her mother now. When Alexander had called her, her initial reaction was pure happiness. As she thought about it more, she realized what a disappointment she was going to be to her mother.
"I'm here and in the flesh. I would love to come see where you live sometime." Bella told her daughter.
"Of course mom. Maybe after the baby is born and I get some things worked out..." Cassandra let her voice trail off before proclaiming the need to get home. How was she ever going to tell her mom the things she had missed? Bella was going to be so disappointed in her daughter. As Don spent more and more time at Nina's house, Nina allowed herself to get closer to him. She had forgotten how easy it was to be with him. Nina had also forgotten that Remington was her maid. The two of them had had a fling a while ago and he was quite jealous to see her with Don Lothario. As he slapped her across the face, Nina realized that Don was the man for her. She was tired of her loose ways - they only seemed to get her into trouble. Don was surprised when Nina pushed him onto the bed. He knew that they had been getting closer lately but he had hardly expected her to give into her temptation. It felt good to hold her in his arms once more. Beau Broke seemed to be following in the footsteps of his brother. He was constantly bringing home friends from school. The latest friend was a redhead girl. Brandi was worried about Beau following his brother's example. Brandi watched through the doorway as Beau entertained the headmaster all on his own. Beau had insisted on getting into private school by himself. Brandi had helped prepare dinner and left the rest of the evening up to Beau. The headmaster invited him to join the school. Bella helped Dina celebrate the birthdays of the twins. It was a small party with some of the close neighbors attending to celebrate the birthdays of Justin and Andrew. Cassandra gave birth to a daughter, whom she named Donna after Don. He came by to see the baby but seemed to be less interested in the child than Cassandra would have predicted. Darren and Cassandra were having a difficult time juggling two toddlers and an infant but they were trying their best to make ends meet. Things were a bit strained in the household but Darren was sure they would soon work themselves out. Brandi had been feeling sick to her stomach lately and was worried. Taking care of three children alone seemed to be putting a lot of extra stress on her. A couple of days later, Brandi realized that it wasn't the stress of motherhood giving her an upset stomach. She was pregnant. Daniel and his new wife moved into a slightly bigger house shortly after the twins' birthday. Daniel was glad to be a part of a family once again. Jenna and Misty had enough energy to keep their parents busy for hours. As Kaylynn's pregnancy began to show, she realized the meager state of her marriage. Neither her nor Daniel had much money coming in and they were about to have another child living with them. Kaylynn couldn't even afford new clothing for her pregnancy. Just as things with Nina seemed to be getting on track, Don's cheating ways got him into trouble again. Don had allowed himself to be seduced by Lucy Hanby, the maid, again when Nina found him in the bedroom. She had let herself in. She had been planning to surprise him and was instead herself surprised. "I want you to stay away from me!" Nina yelled at Don.
"But...what about Trip and Kendra?" Don asked.
"You can just forget about them." Nina replied. "If you come near me or the children, I'll make you sorry that you did." Nina stormed out of the room and Don watched as she left. Jennifer gave birth to twins - a boy and a girl. As she stared into the face of her son, she thought about the pregnancy and the weird turn it had taken. All of the early doctor visits had said that she was having one child. It was only the last one that had confirmed twins. Mary Sue had been working extremely hard to raise two children. During her maternity leave, Mary Sue was taking the time to get to know her children better and to teach the essential things that they would need in their future. Luckily, this pregnancy seemed to be less intense than the first two. Remington, the maid, was the only one around when Mary Sue went into labor. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do to help Mary Sue. He found it extremely awkward to be her only support during this time of need. He had recently taken up relations with Angela Pleasant since she was at college now. Mary Sue didn't know this though. Brandi stopped by as Nina was storming out of the house to talk to Don. When he saw her bulging belly, he knew that he had screwed up once again.
"Don - we need to talk." Brandi said forcebly. Nina stood to the side and watched.
"Yes?" Don asked.
"I'm pregnant - with your child." Brandi told him. She mouted 'I'm sorry' to Nina, who turned to leave. "Okay." Don replied.
"But I want to let you off the hook. I ask nothing of you - no money, no interference. Nothing." Brandi replied.
"But, why?" Don asked.
"Because it would only make things more complicated." Brandi told him. "I want to do this alone. I just thought you should know the truth." Don watched as Brandi waddled away. Women were cutting him out of the lives of his children left and right. Darren stared into Cassandra's eyes as he asked her out on a date. Before leaving for work, he had asked her to put on her best outfit for tonight. He came home to find her waiting for him in a fancy dress. Darren took Cassandra to Le Magnifique, a restaurant in Bluewater Village. As Cassandra looked at the expensive menu, she wondered why they were at this restaurant. What did Darren have up his sleeve? The first course hadn't even come when Darren slid a black box across the table to Cassandra. As she looked at the box, she realized what was happening and could barely contain her excitement. Darren was proposing! Jennifer tried to discuss her concern with John as he rambled on about work. He told her that the doctor had simply overlooked the second child in the beginning. As she stared at her cheesecake, she realized that she might have an explanation for it all. After the guests had left and the party was cleaned up, Dina reached her arms around Bella to give her a hug.
"I'm sorry for any grief I may have caused you." Dina told Bella.
"It's not your fault. I'm just worried about the future now." Bella replied.
"Well, I want you to know that your help with the boys has been much appreciated. And I really did love Mortimer."
"I know - I know that you did." Bella replied. She could tell that Dina had grown up since her disappearance. "We should celebrate." Bella declared before bringing a cheesecake from the kitchen.
"What are we celebrating?" Dina asked as she took her seat.
"Our friendship." Bella smiled up at Dina.
"In that case, I think we should talk." Dina began. "I want us to agree that we won't let the reading of the will come between us."
"Of course." Bella smiled at Dina and bit into her cheesecake. Don drowned his sorrows in food, women, and drink for the next few months. He stayed around the house and hardly anyone ever saw him. Some of the people in town were beginning to worry about him. Don may not have been leaving his house much, but he was certainly having a lot of visitors. He was finding women wherever he could to occupy his time. It seemed to be the only thing that kept his mind off of his sorrows. "Cass, I know that it's taken me a while to get here and that you were starting to be impatient but I'm finally certain. I'm finally certain that I want to marry you." Darren said, as she opened the box.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm more sure than ever." He replied. "Cassandra Goth, will you be my wife?" Darren asked as Cassandra put the ring on her finger. As Daniel looked at Kaylynn's growing stomach, he realized what he had done. He had shut off all possiblities of reparing his marriage with Mary Sue. Kaylynn was his new wife now - and he wasn't even in love with her. Don had really let himself go. Women had even stopped being attracted to him. His house was a mess, he was a mess, and oddly enough he couldn't have cared less. Nina didn't want him in her life and he had to accept this. He just didn't know how he was supposed to accept it. After Darren's proposal, Cassandra finally worked up the nerve to invite her mother over for lunch. She was becoming increasingly worried what Bella's reaction would be to the situation. How was she supposed to explain the past ten years to her mother?
