In the last Chapter Kaylie had losy her parents once again. Uncle Peter was also gone now. She took her little brother to the time machine in hopes to go back and stop them from going to the retirement party. She had entered the correct location, date, and time, but unknowingly hit the buttons as she got up from the computer desk. A Random destination/time had been entered. She never checked to make sure all was well before hitting the start button. She also forgot to take the "return home" watches along as she got into the time machine's chamber with Caleb to make the jump........ "Something's wrong," Kaylie said to herself as the bliding light faded. "This is not our living room. I programmed our living room."
"Liv-ing-room," Caleb mumbled out. "Momma?"
"Momma's not here, sweetie. I don't even know where here is." Kaylie choked back tears as she shook her arm slightly so her sleeve fell back a bit, "Where's the watch?" She checked Caleb's arms. No watch. She check his pockets, then her own. No watches. "Oh my God!" A shiver went through Kaylie's body like a bolt of ice lightning. "Help!" She cried, "Help!"
Kaylie sat Caleb on the ground and kissed hime gently. She splashed some water on her face from the nearby stream. The water was warm. It certainly wasn't winter here. She looked up after drying her face with her sleeve. She thought she had heard a faint growl. "Caleb?" He wasn't where she had put him. She started to panic, "Caleb!" She saw him just a little further up the stream cuddling into a big dog. "Oh my God! Caleb!"
Caleb had his arms wrapped around the dog. It seemed friendly enough.
Kaylie inched over as Caleb let go. "Well then. Hello there," she said petting the dog on the head. "You're a Great Dane. I wonder what your name is. Do you have owners? Okay, now I'm just going crazy. Not like you could answer me." The dog just stood there, panting, enjoying the head scratch.
"Where's your home, boy? If I followed you would you lead us to people. or are you just a stray?"
Caleb started to cuddle the dog again and eventually fell asleep. kaylie didn't bother to wake him. She eventually cried herself to sleep, keeping a grip on one of Calebs suspenders so she'd know if her woke up and tried to crawl around.
After a restless night sleep on the forest floor, Kalie picked up her little brother and started walking in hopes the dog would start going his own way, hopefully to his home. The dog did eventually take the lead and they followed him further down the stream and thought the woods.
The dog led the way to a shack where an elderly man greeted him, "Well, hello there, Duke. Did you stray from the hunting party again?" The dog groaned happily as the man scratched his head. The mans voice had a strong accent. British, it seemd to Kaylie. "Come on inside," The man said to Duke, "I have a nice juicy bone waiting on the floor for you." As Duke pushed his way in the front door, the old man turned around and saw Kaylie. He had a puzzled look on his face as he looked her up and down.
"Hi," Kaylie squeaked out, knowing full well that interacting with history in anyway could cause problems in the present.
The man lifted an eyebrow, "You are not from here?"
"No, I, umm, am from... a far away place."
"You dress strangely, milady."
Milady? Is that what he said? That's medievalish! She tooka good look at him and what he was wearing. Robes. Unkept hair and beard. British accent. Medieval Britian!
Tears started to fill her eyes. The old man moved closer with a concerned look on his face. He seemed no threat. "I...I need help," Kaylie choked out, giving into her fear and grief.
"Come inside, milady," the man said.
It was a small place. Lit by candles. A stone fireplace was giving off a sooting heat.
"My name is Merlin," the man said.
"I'm Kaylie....... Merlin? Did you say Merlin?"
"I did. You seem surprised. Have we met before?"
"Merlin the magician?"
He laughed, "I'm hardly that. I have a bit more of an education that most men, but I am hardly a magician."
"Are you King Arthur's Merlin?"
"Who are you? I know you said your name, but you are very strange. Where do hail from?"
"Oh my God, you are! And is there a Gwenivere? Lancelot? Morgana?"
"Woah! Slow down," Merlin said. "Gwenivere and Lancalot are here, but I know of no Morgana. Arthur has a sister, Morgan. Is that who you speak of?"
"You really did exist"
"Did? What do you mean did? We are existing right now."
"I'm sorry." Kaylie knew right then she had to tell him. She had to tell someone. She let Caleb down to play with Duke.
Kaylie told Merlin everything that knew of the legend of King Arthur. When she finished telling him that she revealed her situation in full. Starting with the first death of her parents right up to her time jump that landed her and her brother here.
Merlin was speechless. Kaylie was starting to beleive that he thought her to be crazy, especially when he finally let out one word... "Wow."
Merlin smiled, "And I thought my life was exciting."
"You beleive me?" Tears were filling her eyes.
"I do. And I wish I could help you get home. But I am not a powerful sorcerer. I play around with herbs, and tease Arthur's knights with my education. I am advisor to the King. That is all."
"We're stuck here, me and Caleb."
"I'm sorry, milady. I truly am."
"What do I do?"
Merlin thoguht for a moment, "We need to get you to blend in. Get you some clothes. Morgan is a student of mine, pehaps she could help. We would need to reveal who you are to her. And pehaps to Arthur as well."
"I've already disobeyed the rules of time travel. Telling anyone else would surely alter something! and Morgan? We have to tell her? Why her?"
"Milady, let me straighten out a few details of what you call the legend. Only a part is reality."
Kaylie was stunned to learn the truth behind the legend. King Arthur was the Son of Uther and Igraine, but not conceived the way the legends tell. Igranes first husband, Gorlois, father of Morgan was slain in battle. Uther Penndragon took them in to care for them. Igraine evetually loved and married him, thus Arthur was born. Uther was good king. Slain in a battle himslef, a young Artur took the crown. becasue of his young age, Merlin was appointed guardian. He had been advisor to Uther and now advised Arthur. Merlin contined telling Kaylie that Morgan grew up to marry Sir Accolon and gave birth to Mordred.
"So he's not Arthurs son?"
"No," Merlin said, "and not evil either. But since he is still a child, I will have Morgan keep a close eye on him as he grows up."
"How about Excalibur? Did Arthur draw it from a stone?"
"When a knight is slain in battle, he is buried with his sword as a marker. That is how Uther was burried. He did call his sword that, yes, and it was plunged down in the ground to mark his grave. A nearby village was under attack one day as Arthur and I were visiting the grave. Arthur pulled the sword out to help defend the villagers and kept it. Perhaps that is where that story came from."
"And Gwenavire?"
Marlin shook his head, "Lancelot is his best friend. I cannot see that happening. But, milady, Arthur and Gewivere are not married yet. The wedding is set for mid summer."
The converstaion came to quick end as the door opened.
"Merlin, have you seen Duke?" A hansome young man asked as he entered. "Oh, I'm sorry, I did know you had comapny."
Merlin beckoned him to enter, "It is alright, Arthur, come on in. Duke is here. He knows I save bones for him." Merlin motioned to Kaylie, "This is...(pause).. My cousin. From afar."
"Cousin? I did not know you had any family," Arthur said jokingly. "What other secrets do you keep?"
Merlin just looked away.
Kaylie smiled, "I'm Kaylie." She knew he was puzzeled about her attire as Merlin was when he first sw her. Hopefully the "afar" bit cleared it up a bit.
Duke came running over, "There you are," Arther said. "You missed out on three stags and five rabbits."
"When you leave could you send Morgan out to see me?" Merlin asked, even thought Arthur was still petting the dog, "And tell her to bring a dress or two."
"It was nice to meet you, althought very briefly," Arthur said to Kaylie before leaving.
After he left Kaylie smiled at Merlin, "Thank you for not saying anything."
"I cannot promise to keep your secret for too long."
"I understand."
"And we must tell Morgan. At least some of it. I will not reveal anything of what you said about us here, but I will warn her about her son. I do not like the outcome you spoke of."
"I wish I had not said anything."
Becasue of the this time travel? Milady, This is your present now. What ever comes of the changes you made, you will not see."
That realization. The thought of having to spend her life in a era she was not totally familair with, struck hard. But that was it. And she had to accept it.
A beautiful young woman eventually came by with a an armful of garments, "Arthur told me you had a cousin visiting," Morgan said. "There are some clothes fro a child as well. He said he saw one."
Merlin brought Caleb over and did the necessary introductions. He revealed who Kaylie was and where she had come from, then told her about keeping an eye on Mordred.
Morgan was baffeled by it all but swore to keep a very close eye on her son as he grew up. Only some of what Kaylie knew of the legend stories were revealed and Morgan was content with that, and promsed not to pressure Kaylie for information.
Although conversation was a bit awkward, Morgan helped Kaylie fit in. SHe thought her the ways of the people here in Camelot and they became friends.
Kaylie stayed with Merlin, and avoided people for the most part. She saw Arthur a few times, and caught a glimpse of Lancelot. Mordred even came by and played with Caleb.
She would peek out the windows to watch knights ride by. Merlin would tell her their names and what he knew of their backgrounds. Only some had similarities to the stories she knew.
There was only one person Kaylie knew of but hadn't met yet. That was Gwenivere. And in a way, that was a good thing.......
One day as Kaylie and Morgan were sitting in the courtyard, Gwenivere joined them. Not ecactly what Kaylie wanted, but none the less, here she was, making conversation. She seemed to think highly of herself. Always bringing up the fact that she will soon be queen.
During the conversation Sir Lancelot walked by. Kalyie noticed them glancing at eachother. When LAncelot left the area, Gwenivere calmly excused herself and went in the same direction.
Kaylie watched her go. When she turned back to face Morgan, Morgan was staring at her, "You knwo something, don't you?"
Kaylie swallowed a lump in her throat, "What do you mean?"
"You saw they way were looking at eachother. I'm not the only one who saw it. You came form the future! Are they involved? I know I promised I would'nt press you, but this is my little brother we are talking about."
"I've already done enogh damage by just being here," Kaylie said.
"Please," Morgan pleaded. "I need to know. Will she break his heart?"
Kaylie thought hard on answering, "And if I say yes, what would you do. Stop the wedding?"
"She does, doesn't she?" Morgan's expression changed to a frown, "I knew it. When does it happen."
"I dunno," Kaylie said. "Some number of years down the road. It's your son that makes it known."
MOrgan was deep in thought, "We gotta stop this wedding. I'd rather have him sad now, then have him marry into a lie, breaking his heart even more."
"You can't just walk up to him and tell him."
"No, but I can walk up to her. If he calls off the wedding, He father, DeGrance, will propbably turn against us and Arthur surly does not want him for an enemy. But," Morgan continued, "we could get her to call off the wedding. We just need to get her to admit her feelings."
Kaylie was feeling sick to her stomach. She should have nothing.
