My name is Lumbar. I am a very special dog. Do you know why I'm so special? Well I'll tell you about me and what I was told when I was a puppy.........that will explain it all. This is my doggy Mommy. Isn't she pretty? Her name is Duty. This is my Daddy, his name is Service. He is big and strong. Part of what makes me such a special dog is my blood. The trainers used the smartest dog they could find; that's my mom. She is "an Einstein" what ever that means. And my daddy is one of the strongest dogs my trainers had ever found. They said he has real strong muscles and joints. If I have my dad's body I'll be able to pull a grown man without hurting myself. I had lots of brothers and sisters to play with. We all had our training together, but we only get to be a "service dog" if we are big enough and smart enough. All of us dogs go out for training. We learn how to behave at the movies, restaurants, and other places our person may want to go. We pull our trainer around in the wheelchair to get used to it and practice for when we are given to a special person who needs us. The people taught us commands that they said we had to know inorder to do our job. I learned fastest by watching my mom and dad do the commands. We learned "Visit" this means to put our paws on the wheels of a person's wheelchair, and NOT their leg. This is VERY important. If we accidentaly scratch a person's leg they could get an infection....that could make them very sick. Lots of people who use wheelchairs have poor circulation in their legs. If my person gets too sick they will have to go to the hospital and I won't be able to take care of them. We were trained at a very young age. They did this so we would not pick up bad habbits. Everything the trainers did for us and with us from day one was for a reason. We were not allowed to eat people food EVER! We have to eat ONLY dog food. It only sounds mean....it's not though. We shouldn't be distracted by food, and if we go to a restaurant or store with our person we need to behave ourselves. I need to pay attention to my person.....not treats. "I have a secret to tell you. You are going to be a very important dog someday. You are going to be what only the brightests, strongest doggies can......you're going to be someone's miracle, you're going to be a "service dog" ." I always heard my trainers telling us this.....since even before we could open our eyes. "You have to grow up big and strong like your daddy Service, and smart and sensitive like your mommy Duty." Oh and speaking of...... If you do your business on the floor you get scolded. We have to do that OUTSIDE. It's even more improtant for us to learn thses rules.....someone in a wheelchair may not be able to clean up the mess. There sure was a lot to learn. Lots of commands and all of them are important. I got lots of love and effection. "C'mon boy.....get me back in the wheelchair". "You did it!" "Good boy!" "Good boy!"

See isn't my daddy strong? He can help a human get up even though the human outwieghs him! Someday I can do that too.
I can't wait to be as big and strong as my dad. All that work sure does make him tired though. It's a lot of work to push or pull someone bigger than you. All that learning made us tired too. My mommy isn't as physically strong as my daddy. She has something called "intuition". She can tell when things are going to happen. Like when people have a seizure......my mommy can sense it's going to happen and warn them to get down so they don't fall and get hurt. My trainers hope I'll get this from my mom. They said a dog is needed who can tell when one is comming, but bigger like my dad. I remember when I met my person for the 1st time. As soon as I met him I knew why I was taught all of those things. This was why I was here......he needed me. I could tell that there was something different about him. Somehow I knew that this was not pretending......he really was unable to get around on his own. He was not pretending like my trainers were. My doggy mommy had given me a gift.....and now that gift is for this person.....my person. I met his caregiver.....she is very nice. Whenever my person is going to have a seizure.....I have to BARK BARK BARK! I was taught to keep on barking until someone comes. I have to make him lie down in a bed. If he stays in his wheelchair he might fall out when he has his seizure. He could hit his head. I have to get her and bring her to him. I can help him but 911 can't understand "woof". I wont stop until I've gotten help. He has them a lot! I know I make his neighbors upset with all of my barking.......but I'm only doing my job. When my person is going to have a seizure Itry and get him to lie down, and I always stay right by his side. I have a comfy dog bed, but I'm more comfortable when I can be close by to watch over him. When my person is doing fine he likes to play video games. He says SSX3 is the only way he can go on the slopes again. His caregiver says it is a safer way to ski. My person had an accident skiing and he hurt his back and hit his head. That's why he has me now. I tell him when he will have a seizure and I help him when I can, or if not I get help for him; just like I was taught and just like my daddy. He loves it when other people come to visit. He misses being able to go visiiing.......not everybody has a house without stairs or with doorways wide enough to accomodate his wheelchair. His home is special. It's extra big so he will have room to turn around in his wheelchair. He has a sink made so he can pull in underneath to brush his teeth. His bathroom is so big because he has enough room to have his wheelchair close....... by inorder to make it easier to get back into a wheelchair. If it is too far between his wheelchair and where he needs to be he will fall and could get hurt. He uses a curtain instead of a door; bathroom doors are usually too small for a wheelchair to get through. He took the door away and had an arch installed in it's place and uses a curtain for privacy. He has a van so he can go out. His caregiver drives us to where he wants to go......then I pull him. If he dropps something I get it for him. I reach counters for him to give the merchant their money when we go shopping. I push bottons on the elevator. I pull and hold dorrs open for him. And I carry things in my special vest. The vest has a handle on it to help him hold on to me, and I have pockets on it so I can carry his medicine or books, or whatever he needs me to carry. See. Aren't I a very special doggy?

Hello. I'm glad everyone is enjoying my story about Lumbar the service dog. I do know quite a bit about service dogs and about being in a wheelchair as many have pointed out. I am myself in a wheelchair but I don't not have a service dog at right now. I am also Legally Blind and I was unaware of the poor picture quality....my friends LaurieR and Karie alerted me to that problem and helped me to adjust the camera for future stories.
