One gray and dreary day a very important visitor was schedualed to come and see Matt and also Jenny and Lumbar.
Jenny: Oh Matt you poor thing. It's this rain. If you're hurting this bad I think it may be a good idea for you to take your heavy duty pain killers and sleep this out. What do you think?
Matt: (with watery eyes and a shaky voice)I think I want to do anything that will make it go away.
Jenny: Yes sir that's it off to bed for you......but only because it's for your own good. Jenny: OK I'll be in earshot if you need anything. Those pills should be sending you to La La Land in short order.
Matt: Thankyou.........sweetie......I meant Jenny. Sorry I guess the pills are already makeing me loopy. Lumbar: I laid on Matt's bed not leaving his side like a good dog should. I'm not sure why but when the sky drools my owner sometimes cries. Meanwhile as the deluge of rain kept on all day Jenny called Matt's social worker to reschedual their apointment. (While Matt was SOUND asleep from having too take a bunch of strong pain medicine, Jenny took advantage of the quiet and the PRIVACY and called an old sarority sister)
Jenny: Oh I'm telling you Dianne he's a computer wizard. He's real sweet too. Jenny: Oh if I could have HIM KISS ME.......wow....... But as much as I'd LOVE.....well I should be honest ......I'd adore him kissing me.......I'm scared of trying anything. What? Oh no it's not that I've got a problem with his being in a wheelchair.......not at all. I just know that even in the best of relationships they can end badly for a variety of reasons. I could never live with myself if I was the girl who hurt him. I had to help sweep up the peices of his broken heart when that blind date flopped. Huh? Oh I didn't tell you about that? Well....... (they talked for a while longer).... and she had the nerve to say if he couldn't WALK her down the aisle he wasn't good enough! If only she knew just what she passed up. Oh OK. Yeah I hear the little one crying in the background. It was great talking to you again Dianne. Oh me......I don't know when I'll have a family of my own......but I do want to have a family. OK.....bye......ciao. (The rain/the sky drooling kept pounding for hours. During which Jenny ran Matt a hot bath and then gently massaged his back until he was relaxed enough to fall back to sleep) The next day a VERY concerned social worker came by for a visit/assesment. Jenny had worked for Matt 6wks now. Matt was one of Miss Michelle's favorite clients. She felt ESPECIALLY protective of him. Miss Michelle: Your attendant Jenny said the rain was why you wanted to reschedual. Is this true? She wasn't makeing anything up was she?
Matt: Oh no nothing like that. I was in a lot of pain was all. I think things are going to be much different with Jenny. Matt: That rain realy did a number on me. I was on the verge of tears numerous times.
Miss Michelle: And did she call you " a whinney baby"?
Matt: No! She got cool rags for my brow instead. When I thout I'd get sick she didn't run away she was really there for me. It really was just the rain that made us need to reschedual. Miss Michelle: Well better weather is here now. I'm happy things seem to be working out. You know I worry about you......especially after what happened with your last attendant. Matt: I know......and I was too at 1st......but not anymore. Yes ma'am better weather is here to stay......no matter what it's like outside.(with a lil chuckle) Miss Michelle: So you're sure things are good?
Matt: I promise. THings are great......nothing but sunshine since Jenny came here to work for me. Jenny: Miss Michelle?
Miss Michelle: Yes?
Jenny: If Matt keeps reasuring you everything is fine, and reports nothing but sunshine........why do you keep doubting? I love this work and I'm very good at what I do. Jenny: To be honest the fact that you'd even incinuate that I could ever do something to hurt Matt or anyone else in his position is.........horrible!
Miss Michelle: I'm sorry I didn't mean anything personally by it. And although YOU wouldn't do anything to someone in your care........there are those who not only don't take proper care of thier client......but they take advantage of and abuse people. Unfortunatly Matt's last attendant did NOT take proper care of him! Poor Matt wound up back in the hopsital for 3wks.
Jenny: That's horrible. I know that everything I'm too do for Matt is very important.
Matt: Of course you do sweetie.....I mean Jenny. Miss Michelle: Do I smell the aroma of love blooming?
Matt: Huh? I just had a brain fart. I meant to say "Jenny". Really.
Miss Michelle: Yeah sure you did. I still need to make sure she's still doing her job adaquetly......no matter how cute you think she may be. Now for the nitty gritty. Jenny I'd like you to tell me about some of your daily routines with Matt. Jenny: Well we do Physical Therapy almost every day. Matt is always striving to get stronger and more independant. He will probably always be somewhat stiff and sore from all the pins and rods he has, but the PT helps. Jenny: Every so often he does floor excercises and refuses to let me help him. He keeps telling me some day he wants to do it all himself........and he won't get there being coddled. It's hard for me though because I all I want to do is help him.......but he doesn't always want my help. As always it's his choice and so I let him do what ever he needs or wants. Jenny: When he does insist on doing it all on his own, I often take that time to bathe Lumbar. His service dog has to be spotless and absolutely vermin free. Besides Lumbar loves anything to do with water........typical Labradore for you. Jenny: I do the cooking, cleaning and I make Matt's bed for him. Jenny: Matt has a ton of medications. Some are for his siezures. He has them anyway but if he were to miss a dose of his meds they would be out of control. He has medicine for his arthritis. He's also got quite a few meds specifically just for pain, some more for the muscle spasms, and last but not least........if the pain is so bad he is feeling like he needs to puke there is another one for that. Because there are so many pills he takes I've been keeping track of when I give them on this clip board. I figured it would also be handy to have in case of an emergency the paramedics and what ever Dr sees him could see exactly what he takes, when, and why. Plus I wouldn't want him to accadently have an over dose.
Miss Michelle: Wow Jenny. I must say that I'm very impressed! Jenny: Thank you. I've also taken the precation of using my MP3 player only with headphones so that my music won't cause Matt to have a migrane headache. I know people with Traumatic Brain Injuries tend to get them often.
Miss Michelle: That WAS thoughtful.
Jenny: I would feel terrible if I caused someone to have a migrain.
Miss Michelle: Wow you're a very sensitive person Jenny. I wish there were more people like you to help out people like Matt. We've always got more positions available then qualified people to fill them. So what have you learned by working for Matt? Jenny: Well I looked up a bunch of info about spinal cord injuries and brain injuries. It was actually very facinating. I had always thought that if a person broke their back and needed a wheelchair then it meant the person could feel NOTHING. But thats not always the case. I actually found learning about the central nervous system to be very interesting. People can have spinal cord injury that can leave them with no sensation but people can also retain some sensation if the spinal cord was left somewhat intact. Jenny:I found this great web site www.apparelyzedsims.com; it's specifically for sims who have had a spinal cord injury,as well as their family, friends, and caregivers. They get together and discuss new medical research, pollacies on Sims with Disabilities Act; and I found out that Matt unfortunatly was not the only sim to have a blind date be shallow and shortsighted.
Miss Michelle: A date ended badly? Is there something I'm missing?
Jenny: Oh well see there was this lady who had been chatting with Matt. They'd been chatting every day for about 2 weeks. They found out in that time they had lots in common.
Miss Michelle: OK? So where is the bad part.
Jenny: Oh that came along after the picture exchanging and "hubba hubba"s but before their table was ready. She told Matt, "I want a man who can WALK me down the aisle". Miss Michelle: Oh Matt.....Matt......Matt. Oh you poor thing if your life were a screenplay I think it would be listed under tradgedy. Someone really should make a movie out of your life.......kleenex alone would stand to make a handsome profit.
Matt: A movie? Now aren't you exagerating just a tad here?
Miss Michelle: I just remember how depressed you were........when........you know......your fiance decided she didn't want to see what progress you might make.
Matt: Yeah of course I do. That's partially why I was even afraid to mention that I use a wheelchair. I know people sometimes don't know quite what to make of people who use a wheelchair. Hey I know I'm sitting in an eyeball magnet. But I'm not depressed or even upset anymore.......I had Jenny there to console me. Jenny: You mean to tell me that your fiance left you........right after your skiing accident?
Miss Michelle: Jenny just how much do you know about Matt's past?
Jenny: I know he was involved in a horrific ski accident. I know that he spent 10 wks at Sim City Memorial Hospital and an additional 18mo. in Sim City Central Nervous System Recovery Center. And I know he was there for so long because of his multiple surgeries and severe head trauma. I also knew he had been placed BACK in SCMH for 3wks because of infected sores and bladder infection. Miss Michelle: Not only did he have a bad skiing accident........but the worst one Sim City has seen without also seeing the Grim Reeper! In fact Sim City Dr.s came up with several new inovative techniques just to put him back together.
Matt: Yeah at SCCNSRC they started kidding calling me "Humpty Dumpty" out of love of course, cuz all the kings horses and all the king's men had trouble putting me together again.
Miss Michelle: His injuries are why there is now the "Wheeler technique", it was named after our own Matt Z. Wheeler. Say Matt would you mind telling Jenny a bit more about your accident? I have a harder time talking about it than YOU do.
Matt: Well since you already know I was hurt in a skiing accident.......I can't come up with anything exciting like......."a bear got me" or my personal fav......"I was mountain climbing, got to the top, and decided repelling was just too darn slow". Ha ha ha ha ha.
Miss Michelle: Matt be serious........I know how hard that is for you.
Matt: Oh OK. I was on a ski holiday with my fiance and her famiy. We were supposed to be married the fallowing Valentine's Day. Anyway I turned to look at her beautiful blond hair flowing in the breeze.......and wham! Tree! Anyway I hit it with such impact that the tree was uprooted. I broke T-8 which you already knew, but I also dislocated C-6. I broke more ribs than I didn't, and some of those broken ribs hurt my lungs; one was punctured and the other collapsed. My kidneys even took a beating. It took so much hardware to hold me together I think they may have scrapped a whole car to do it. (with a smile) I was in a coma for over a month. Jenny: Wow! I knew you'd worked hard to get to where you are now........but not just how much.
Miss Michelle: Well what he's leaving out is that several times we thought we'd loose him. The Dr.s had to drill holes in his skull just to allow his brain room to swell without further damage, he had to have a shunt; which is why Matt can't afford to fall out of his chair and hit his head....that could be deadly to people with shunts. And even if we got him back we just weren't sure how well he'd do. That was why Victoria left. We were afraid if he made it he would be a quadraplegic.......so the fact he is only paraplegic is wonderfull! And he's even found a way to give back. He helps us out at SCCNSRC with all of our "tough cookies". Matt: I like to help out the new patients, I wish I'd seen a smile roll in when I 1st arrived.
Miss Michelle: Yeah well you have no idea how much you do for those people. You have a special gift for getting through to thoe who even push away their own families.
Matt: It's just cuz they know I've been there. Sometimes people feel very alone......even if they have a room full of friends and family who want too help......they can't always see past their own feelings of isolation to see what they're doing to their loved ones.
Miss Michelle: You should have been my collegue Matt. I think social services would have been your calling.......you're so sensative and trustworthy.
Matt: I'm just "paying it foward". Jenny: He's one of the most wonderfull people I've ever met Miss Michelle.
Matt: you're too sweet Jenny.
Miss Michelle: Well then it sounds like everything here is going well. Have there been any problems or complaints for either of you?
Matt: None what so ever! Jenny: Well I would like it if when Roy comes over and pigs out on nachos........if he'd go home when his stomach starts to bother him. I don't mind doing things for Matt.......but Roy can push his own plunger or else use his own bathroom. I didn't want to say anthing........but it is kinda gross.
Matt: I'm sorry. I had no idea. I'll nicely ask him to plug his own plumbing. Hows that?
Jenny: Perfect. I'm fine with that.......I like Roy and I don't want him to stop visiting you.
Matt: Nah. He's my freind.......he'll understand. Miss Michelle: Seems everything is on the up and up. Well Matt since everything is OK I'll go ahead and send in my findings to my supervisors. They'll love hearing you're doing well. Well Lumbar's trainers will be doing their evaluation in 3wks after you and Lumbar have been a team for 6wks. I will see you after Jenny has worked 6mo here. Unless you think you'd like me too stop in sooner.
Matt: I don't think that will be neccesary. Like I said Jenny has been terrific! Feel free to stop by for a social call though.
Miss Michelle: I just might. I'm supposed to give a hug from everyone at SCCNSRC. Jenny: I'll see you out. It was nice seeing you again. And I'm sorry if it seemd like I was defensive at luch.
Miss Michelle: No problem, I understand. And like I said it wasn't anything personal. But it is my job how ever to make sure that I look out for Matt's best interests.
Jenny: I understand. (While Jenny and Miss Michelle said good bye at Miss Michelle's van and signed some more paperwork)
Matt: God? I know when I was in the helicopter riding to the hospital..........I know I said I'd never ask you anything else again. You let me live and I'm eternally grateful. I'm also grateful for Jenny. But God if you could just see fit to have her love me.........it would be Heaven on Earth.

Just in case anyone was wondering......NO Matt's injuries and experiences are NOT mine. I did break my back and I do have a slight head injury which is why it may be apparent that I have a lot of 1st hand knowledge.....but that is where the similarities stop. I hope all enjoy and learn with the lives of Matt, Jenny, and Lumbar.
