This is a story of an ordinary girl living a some-what ordinary life.

This is a story of an ordinary girl living a some-what ordinary life. This is where my life begins…or rather, where it ends. 221 Draven Road, an old brownstone that, from the looks of it, was probably built over an ancient burial ground. I live here with my aunt after my third foster parents said I was too weird even for their family. At first I couldn't believe I was supposed to live here. Was my aunt serious? I should have brought a cross or something. I debated with myself but finally decided I didn't really have any other choice.

At least my bedroom was decent. I love the wallpaper and it's the biggest bedroom in the house. My aunt prefers the back room with four full windows but there isn't much of a view. Yeah--and it kind of matches her personality. Ordinary, boring, and tacky. The backyard is super creepy. There's a sea of knee-high grass and an old shed with boarded up windows. The door to the shed is locked but my aunt doesn't know where the key is. I like the small pond though and a ring of mushrooms that my aunt claims is a fairy circle. Even if that's absolutely rediculous I have to admit that the center of the ring is the only place where flowers seem to grow. The house is pretty ordinary, a collection of cramped rooms with peeling wallpaper and musty furniture. But I discovered this hidden door behind the stairs that had been covered with plaster. It was strange that they had left the iron handle. I tried to ask my aunt about it but she refused to say anything. She said the owners of the house had been an old couple who had moved to a retirement community and hadn't even appeared in person to sign the deed. One day I cornered her and demanded an answer. "What could be behind it?" I could tell I had definitely annoyed her. "It's not like your parents ever hid anything from you." I just turned on my heel and walked out. She says things like that every so often but I know it's because she's worried about me. I don't really think about my parents anymore. My aunt works really hard to support us. I want to get a job too but she says I should just concentrate on school. She's also a horrible cook so to prevent a fire from burning down the house we usually order pizza. I don't mind living with my aunt. She mostly doesn't ask questions and only worries about my grades and whether or not I've eaten breakfast. There's always pizza in the fridge so I usually don't have to hunt for cereal.

But one day--that all changed. I was hunting for bugs in the backyard (I was trying to prove to my aunt that there were cockroaches) when I heard the snap of a twig behind me. I spun around and saw a tall shadow standing beside the shed. Ducking behind a bush I watched in disbelief as the figure peered into the broken windows. It wasn't that I was surprised that a stranger had entered the garden...I was surprised that he was a ghost. I snuck back around the side of the house and ran straight into the parlor. My aunt had been watching TV and watched in amusement as I tried not to pass out. "What happened?" I could tell she didn't care. "I think---I think I was hallucinating."

"You've said stranger things before. You sure it wasn't the frozen pizza?" "No--of course not!" "The moldy cheddar then." I'd about had it with my aunt. "Come on--you have to believe me!" "I'll believe it when I see it." She said, probably thinking that I'd watched too much late-night television. So I stopped telling her. Over the next few weeks I saw more and more of our resident ghost. I think he's a gypsy--he wears strange, baggy clothes and always seems to be thinking about something. But I always saw him in the garden. One afternoon while my aunt was at work he appeared in the parlor. He looked at me questioningly, as if expecting me to say something, then vanished. I sat there for a few moments in shock. His eyes had been asking a question--what did he want? I also didn't know that I wasn't the only one who could see ghosts.
