A historical narrative set in 1850 Victorian England. For a glossary of terms please consult my personal blog. Emma walked very carefully behind Mrs. Sheffield as they approached the large, rambling house from the west servant’s entrance. “Although I do not know if there is to be a place for you here my child, at the very least I can share the little I know so that one day you can improve yourself.” Mrs. Sheffield said warmly. “As I’m sure you know my dear," She continued as they entered the mud room, “This is where all deliveries are brought from the dairyman, butcher, fishmonger, and greengrocer which are either ordered in advance or requested on the day.” “And this is where many of the dry goods are kept. The rest of the larder is in the basement adjacent to the washing room.” Continuing on into the first floor proper Mrs. Sheffield proceeded to show Emma a shining kitchen with spotless floors and new cabinetry. Emma gazed around her appreciatively. How could a woman living on her own maintain such a spotless and beautiful home? “Tut tut!” She heard Mrs. Sheffield cluck, “Don’t stand there dawdling--I’ll ring for the mistress now.” Leading Emma through the servant’s door behind the main stairs she smoothed her skirts and made sure both she and the girl were presentable. “You rang Anna?” Came a lovely voice as a young woman came down to meet them. Emma hid behind Mrs. Sheffield. Was this the mistress of the house? “Miss Crambury, please let me begin by apologizing for my prolonged absence. I know my trip into town was meant only to be a simple delivery but I was delayed when one of the cart wheels cracked. While it was being repaired I rested by the roadside and found that I shared company with this young girl. Her name is Emma Bedford.” While Mrs. Sheffield was speaking Emma grew more confident and openly admired the elegant wainscoting and chandelier. Noting her fascination Miss Crambury asked hesitantly, “I know we’ve been looking for a general maid but does she have much experience?” “Oh yes.” Mrs. Sheffield replied immediately, “Though only as a ladies maid and general housekeep.” Miss Crambury thought for a moment. “She certainly has a pleasing face and mannerisms, I can see that she must be a very a fitting ladies maid. But she does seem a bit young. Has she given a character?” “Yes and her references appear exemplary.” Mrs. Sheffield replied. “And she’s such a sweet little thing. She ran inside a tea shop while I was waiting for the cartwright and brought me a mug of the finest pekoe. But that’s only the musings of an old cook, after all.” Mrs. Sheffield smiled. “After some consideration I think I will interview her.” Miss Crambury said thoughtfully. “Can you show her into the parlor?” The mistress of the house disappeared upstairs to refresh herself while Mrs. Sheffield directed Emma into the parlor. “I apologize for keeping you waiting my dear.” Miss Crambury said, returning a few minutes later. “We’ll begin the interview now.” “The position for hire is a general maid with an emphasis on parlor keep. I have looked through your character and am quite pleased with your previous work. Your former employers commend your dutiful dedication and honesty. However you seem a bit young. How old are you?” “I have just turned ten mam but I have been a general maid and parlor maid all of my life. My mother died after I was born but she was the principle ladies maid of the Duke of Ellesmere. Their professed cook agreed to look after me until I was old enough to earn my keep.” “Well Miss Bedford, I am impressed by your experience considering your age. You may work for a trial period of one week after which time I will assess your accomplishments.” Outside Mrs. Sheffield tried to pretend she hadn’t been listening in on their conversation but when she heard that the young girl had been hired she could scarcely contain her happiness. “I won’t ask for anything mam and let the dog get the scraps first.” Emma said as her employer rose, signaling the end of the interview. “And I’m very comfortable sleeping in a garden shed or wintering cellar.” “On no, my dear.” Miss Crambury said then laughed. “You and Mrs. Sheffield are the only servants here. I’m away all day taking care of customers. You may do as you please as long as the work gets done.” Suddenly she noticed Emma glancing at the harpsichord. “Can you play?” She asked as Mrs. Sheffield entered to take charge of the new temporary maid. “Oh yes, mam. The duchess’ ladies maids taught me on Sundays.” Emma carefully seated herself on the polished bench and began to play a popular sonnet. “Lovely.” Miss Elizabeth Crambury breathed. Noticing Emma’s intense look of rapt concentration she smiled, recognizing a promising student in her new charge.
