Welcome stranger--I'm not sure if I can trust you yet but I have a sense of people and know that you'll at least keep my story a secret. So turn the pages slowly and remember that elves choose their friends very carefully. I am a high elf born from the noble blood of the Faegryn High Court which has since dissolved into the Star and Aevyn Courts. My mother's soul element, earth, flows through my veins but I can still command the lesser spells of wind, my father's learned element. This is my Faechurn, or soul-destined. Ash and I have been friends since early childhood but others find him hard to understand. He's from the lower caste of Silvain elves of Nandorin descent. His father however was the head of the Avarin clan which fought for the Star Court in the Aldoran Wars. Thus he was given his father's death name of Starrider. Our home by the sea is a collecton of wanderers. This is Luna--a bright fairy who also has command of the earth element. She tends our flowers with her brother Lyre and collects the seeds from old growth trees so that we might one day begin our own forest. After the bonding ceremony Ash and I still didn't get along very well. He's extremely quiet and hard to read. I regret that we can't easily read one another's thoughts like other Faechurn but we have other gifts which far exceed that ability. Ash, a child of rivers and trees, wanted a taste of the city so we traveled for a few months before planting our home. I liked the museums with their strange animals and paintings. But Ash preferred the formal gardens with their stone paths and rock walls. They were beautiful in their own, contained way. It's amazing that humans can control nature and conform it to their own design. Elves know better--to contain nature is to invite the expression of its less favorable elements. But to my suprise I found that most plants and flowers were quite happy in the city. They enjoyed the sun and the lively presence of so many visitors. Our last stop was Egypt. A strange country with tall columns like tree trunks and frozen gods in halls of stone. I liked Hathor--the falcon headed god with wings the color of the summer sky. I wished I had wings like a fairy to soar above the tops of trees. We both couldn't bear to be away from home for very long however so we soon said goodbye to the marvelous things we had seen and returned to our birch tree deep in the woods. In our travels I made sure to collect the essence of rare trees and flowers to plant in our garden. With a few nourishing earth spells they soon flourished in the rich soil beside the creek. It was after they blossomed that Luna and Lyre came to live with us. The garden was created half by design, and half by the wild unpredictability of nature. Ash, a true child of the wind and rain, fell in love with the lupins and violets and was surprised that the flowers agreed to thrust their roots deep into our garden soil. He pitied the frozen bouquets of force fed flowers in the formal gardens of Europe. Our flowers however can leave any time they wish and are showered with affection. During our journey we made many friends who come often to visit us. One of the things I admire most about my Faechurn is that he is well versed in the languages of men. Wood elves are not as shy as my people and often mix freely with traders and journeymen. Eolien hails from France and often engages Ash in lengthy discussions about harps. Ash and I are very happy together and always manage to find something to do. For me it sometimes involves playing tricks on Ash while he's gardening. I hide behind the sunflowers and cast a water transportation spell that empties his watering can and dumps the missing water on his head. That usually sets off a water battle but Ash's spells are more clever than mine so he always wins in the end. I was raised with human books in a city of citadels balanced above the crashing foam of a waterfall. I study every day to catch up with Ash but I don't regret having a mind filled with the landscape of strange lands created by words alone. Sylphial agrees with Ash--she doesn't understand my love of human books. Complaining that we were too isolated in our small home she demanded a TV to keep pace with the outside world. I don't trust the electric hum of such strange gadgets and it's unhealthy to stare at glass all day. I need a better familiar but every young high elf must begin with a cat. After all, I'm only a few years shy of 300. But 300, for most elven houses, is also a transition age. I didn't know this having been separated from my people since childhood. But one day my skin began to glow and I couldn't seem to concentrate on anything. I was happy and confused all at the same time. Concerned Ash read through every book in our library but found nothing that would explain my condition. Suddenly Luna burst into the spell room which was unusual because earth fairies prefer to remain on the ground. Breathlessly she told Ash that she knew what was wrong--she had spoken with the Queen of her fae circle who had been at court the day the Faegryn house fell. Regretting that she been too inexperienced to help she had since devoted her life to studying the Faegryn high elves and had commited their entire history to memory. Requesting that Ash remain in the spell room Luna flew down to the garden to find me. She confessed the truth of my condition and I smiled. The knot of dread in my stomach slowly dissolved and my mind finally cleared. At last I had an answer.
