"An Invitation to a Hanging:Part the Second" by kidnumber48. Alternative title "I hope you're more of an indoor person!" We take you now to York where a "lovely young maiden" goes about her daily chores... ............... ................ ............ "Oh hello my dear! I didn't notice you there. You should have said something. When I get caught up with my scrubbing, I'm in a world of my own, I tell you!" "You've come to hear more about Dick, haven't you? I knew you had, I could tell just from looking at you! I thought to myself,"You want to hear more about Dick." Well, when we left him, Dick was being held prisoner in a cage outside York Castle... "He paced up and down....up and down.....all day and all night." "He sometimes got bored of this and would just stare wistfully out through the bars dreaming of his freedom." "After a few days Captain Nathan Spiker came to collect Dick from the cage. "I have orders to take you down to the dungeons of the castle, you wretch," barked Spiker,"You'll be held there until you appear in court for creating a public nuisance. If you're lucky you'll get away with public flogging."
"Pah!" sneered Dick insolently.
"Before I lock you in your cell, I need to take your name for the guard's register. What is it wretch?"
Dick snickered nastily to himself. "Why my name's John Palmer, sir," Dick smirked.
"Dick's cell was sparsely furnished with just a toilet, a heavily soiled old wooden bed and an old beer barrel to sit on." "At nights Dick would sleep fitfully. He would toss and turn and would often have a rude awakening as he felt himself falling to the hard, cold stone floor! He'd have to sleep atop the blankets because the bed was infested with hundreds of bugs!" "One night Dick awoke from a fevered nightmare about his mother......." "He dreamt she was standing by his grave. She seemed incensed." "She was raging to herself,"How dare they hang my son!!! I'll get him back, they'll see. Anyway I can!!!" "Never had Dick seen his mother looking so angry!!!" "Then she broke down in tears." "But what struck terror into Dick's heart and made him cry out in the night in horror was when he saw his mother take a shovel and begin to dig......" "He struggled to regain his composure. "She was disinterring me," he thought to himself,"Why would she want to do a thing like that? And I'd never be foolish enough to let myself be hung. Would I?" "Dick paced up and down in the cramped confines of his cell until a voice cut through his thoughts..." "Dick went and listened at the wall and heard the sound of a man singing in the next cell." "Introducing Mr Isaac Ragg, owner of the "It's Raggtime!" Travelling Theatre Company and well experienced fingersmith. Whilst the crowd were watching one of his productions he and his wife would mingle amongst them and relieve them of their purses and jewellery." "Saucy Sal, was a pretty little gal, but she had a wooden leg," Isaac roared at the top of his lungs,"Which she would take off every night as she got into bed!" "Shut that singing up!" ordered the guard,"If that's what that racket is supposed to be!" Isaac stopped his singing and sat down dejectedly on the barrel in his cell." "When the guard had returned to his game of chess, Dick hammered on the stone wall with his fists and shouted,"Oi!" "Hello there!" shouted back Isaac, "Have you been here long?" "Dick and Isaac started chatting quietly through the drainage grates in the floors of their cells and recognising Isaac as a kindred spirit, Dick told Isaac about how he had been imprisoned in a cage outside and then transferred to this cell. He told him of how he had given a false name and was really Dick Turpin. "I want out!" whined Dick. "What you need to do is write a letter to someone who can help," was Isaac's advice. "My brother-in-law can probably help," schemed Dick, "I shall write him a letter straight away." He asked the guard to bring him some writing materials and set to work straight away on his letter." "Dear Brother," wrote Dick,"I write to you from this cold cell, begging you to help me. When I appear before the magistrate I need you to testify as to my good character. Yours Sincerely, John Palmer." "Dick knew that his brother-in-law would recognise the letter as having been sent by him and would come to his aid straight away." "Dick passed his letter out through the bars in his cell door......" "Then laid back on his bunk, smiling to himself, to await a reply........." "Will Dick get a reply to his letter? Will he be released? Will he be hung? Tune into the next episode to find out........!!!"
