I've seen my share of funerals, too many to remember...

I've seen my share of funerals, too many to remember... but this one was different. Mary Price..that was name of the deceased. Loved by many, missed by all..that's how the column read, in the Sim Chronicle. Plenty of mourners, Father Peter made a moving speech, and I'd only heard it a few times before, so that made a change. Mary didn't look her best, but hey what do you expect? I can't get used to these 'no casket' eco funerals. ..but that's me, old fashioned I guess. Anyhow, I was just getting interested in the nephew's story.. about his fish that died the same way... when things started to go wrong. You see, that's when Mary herself arrived... You would think they'd be happy to see her... after all that crying at her loss and so on. Apparently she'd been out on a whist group social, ..on a bus tour of nuclear power stations and other sites of interest aimed at the budget conscious senior traveller. and wasn't dead after all. I find human behaviour very strange at times. Father Peter thought she was an imposter, and checked to see if she had knitted her own cardigan. The sister (the one who was due to get all the money) disputed Father Peter's cardigan observations rigorously. ..and pointed to the cold stiff body in the grave. Mary conceded that the corpse bore some resemblance to herself, and waited for the arguments to subdue. The sister threatened to sue.. and had immediate words with her lawyer..who was conveniently present at the service. Father Peter thought through his options and ... decided his sexton was probably to blame. The sexton, as you might surmise was not too pleased with that theory. So a compromise was reached. The sexton would hit Mary on the back of the head with a shovel, and throw her unconscious form in the freshly dug hole. The relatives were consulted and voted in favour, and Mary could see the logic, but for some reason was in no mood to cooperate. The sexton's fertile brain then formulated Plan B.. ...less neat administratively, but nevertheless effective. Father Peter and he legged it out of the graveyard, unhitched the coach and four.. and cantered off at high speed down Cemetary Road, pursued on foot by a poss of angry relatives. Now I'm not normally the complaining kind. ...but this situation had it's drawbacks for yours truly. I was already late for another gig, and the paperwork was piling up. So while the sister was deep in conversation with her legal team... I grabbed the shovel myself...whacked Miss Price right on her tidy bun... and slipped the body underneath the existing cadaver.. Why that didn't go down well with the sister I will never know. The lawyer pointed out that if everyone got shovelling quick then nobody would find out.. I think he suspected his client of the foul deed, and as he planned to marry the wealthy widow, he didn't openly dispute her claim that her sibling's death was was due to mystical intervention... via an unexpected blow from a freakishly large hailstone. The relatives, having found it imposible to outrun a horse turned on each other, and bartered accusations..from who said what to who at "our Cindy's wedding"...to who took the last peanut butter sandwich at lunchtime.. The sister kept quiet, but I could see traces of Simpat Crunchy on her cheek so I had my suspicions in the sandwich department. I saw Mary's undead spirit lurking by the graveyard gate, then decided to hop it quick before awkward shovel related questions were bandied about. The extra body..you want to know who she was?
Bah to you humans with your endless questions.
I couldn't possibly say......but for anyone who thinks there might be an EMPTY grave knocking about, and some sort of post-life cover up going on...well lets just say I didn't get where I am today without having a few accounting tricks up my ragged sleeves...and if anyone asks, you didn't hear that from me...ok?
