As I came into the stadium I saw Aaron and he greete me with a charming smile. We exhanged pleasantries and he wished me luck. He offered to help me with my warm-up exercises and how could I resist. As we were about to start my phone rang. It was Haley, she sounded in a panic, I couldn't understand anything she was saying. I told her, "Calm down Haely, tell me what's wrong." "It's Dad, he was working in the yard and he, he just collapsed. I'm at the hospital with Mom and she's a wreck. You have to get here as soon as you can. Aiden went to speak with the doctors, but we don't know anything yet. So, Hannah please hurry, we really need you; I really need you."
"I'll be there Haley, as soon as I can. Please call me as soon as you know something, whenever I get a flight it's going to take me 14 hours to get back to the states. I immediately hung up and called my coach over; I let him know what happened and that I'd be pulling out of the race, he gave an understanding nod. I momentarily forgot Aaron was there, I was dazed; I didn't know what to do first. He made it easy; he was on the phone with SimAir. He booked two seats back to the states. I was in awe of his take charge attitude, but also distressed and worried about my Dad. Here I am on the other side of the world and he's in a hospital. It then occurred to me he booked two seats. I asked, "Why did you book two seats?"
"Han, I can't let you fly home alone knowing you'd be worried about your Dad the entire time. The flight leaves in less than two hours. We have to hurry back to the hotel to get our luggage." "No Aaron I can't let you go, you'll lose out on too much money and endorsements. No, no I'll be okay, you should race." He pulled me into his arms and said, "No Hannah I'm going with you! You are more important to me than any amount of money. I couldn't live with myself if I let you go alone. I'm going to talk to my coach and I'll be right back, you stay here."
I was to overwhelm to argue and it would be nice to have a friend. We left the stadium and collected our luggage at the hotel. We got to the airport just in time. We boarded the plane and my head was spinning. I was so worried about my Dad and nervous about being so close to Aaron for 14 hours. My mind was jumbled. I am worried about Hannah and Mr. Wilkerson; but I wanted to scream how in love with her I am. What will we talk about? My head is about to explode, when I found out her engagement was broken off; I wanted to scream MARRY ME. She looks so beautiful sitting here. I wondered what was going through her mind last night as we danced. I'm praying her Dad is okay. I turned to her and asked, "Do you want to call home? You can make one of those ridiculously expensive calls from this airline phone on me." She just smiled and said, "Thanks for everything you're doing, I'm glad you came. I need a friend right now. I, I just don't know what I'd do if something happened to my Dad. We just made amends and I don't spend enough time at home. They're both getting older, maybe I should take that job at Bower & Bower. I mean it would give me more time to spend with my parents. Haley is married and has a family, I'm all they have. I don't know what else I can do, yeah I think being home would be best. She had this far away look in her eyes, as if she was talking more to herself than me. I knew she wasn't seeking approval, that's not really who she is, but I knew I had to speak up.
"Han, I'm sure that's not what your Dad would want, believe me you wouldn't either. You would be miserable punching a time clock. I tried that after college." "Really, where'd you work?" "After college, I briefly moved home; I mean brief. Yu know my Dad, he's great as far as Dad's go. He genuinely cares and loves us, but he thinks he's always knows best. He was proud of Aiden for taking the med school route, but he thought I should utilize my degree. He kept telling me, "Why even go to college if you don't use it in the real world." I got sick of his insisting and all the arguing and I landed a senior manager job at Entertainment Sim Sports Network (ESSN). I easily landed the job because I was in track and had a business degree. My starting salary was $190,000/year, which is good to discuss sports. I thought okay, I can do this job it's sports; I love sports. Great thought in theory but I was very wrong. I hated it, seriously I felt confined suit and tie all day, tight shoes and deadlines. I quit after two weeks and went back to track. Needless to say my Dad was angry, but I explained to him that I make more money in one meet than I would in 5 years at ESSN. So basically what I'm saying is you'd HATE IT and I know your Dad wouldn't want that for you. Why are you looking at me like that?" "Looking at you like what?" "I can't describe it, I don't know if I were a poet I would say with bated breath." She started laughing and said, "Well, I'm glad you're in sports because you are definitely no poet."
I give her a wounded look and say, "I pour my heart out to you and you insult me." I wipe away at false tears, which just cracks her up even more. I can't help but laugh, her laughter is infectious. At this moment it feels like there is only she and I in the world. I wish I could wake up to that smile every morning. "Okay, now why are you looking at me like that?" "Hey, I'm not looking at you any different than I always do," as he smirked at me.
I started having all these intense internal struggles. I was happy to be on this plane with him, but at the same time my Dad kept popping in my head. I wonder because I've never been in this situation; is it okay to be happy when my Dad's in the hospital? I wish I knew the answer, but I guess there is no right answer, hmm or is there. I couldn't figure out what happened. We went from witty, funny banter to silence again. I wish there was something I could do to distract her. This flight is too long for her to worry the way I know she is. That's just how she is; she is the spokesperson for the downtrodden. She took in every stray animal that came across her path. So, I know she's thinking is it okay to laugh when she doesn't know if her Dad is okay. "It's okay Hannah." She turns to me with tears in her eyes, "Is it really, can I laugh and be happy when my Dad's in the hospital? I don't think I can, I'm not supposed to." The tears start to fall and I hold her and let her cry. She excuses herself to the restroom and I pick up the phone and call my brother "Hey Aiden, how's Mr. Wilkerson?" "He's getting a MRI right now, and we're waiting on his lab results. So there's nothing concrete yet. I read the Cat Scan (CT) and I don't see anything. He is conscious now. He has an IV (intravenous fluid) going which brought him around; so we definitely know he was dehydrated. Wait I don't recognize this number; where are you? How do know he's sick?" "I'm on a plane with Hannah. I was helping her warm up when Haley called. So you don't know anything else?" "Not right now. How long is it going to take you to get here?" "We have about 8 hours left." "Where's Hannah, is she ok?" "She's in the restroom and she's worried, so that's why I called. I'll call you back in a couple of hours." "Okay. Hey, Aaron take care of her; she and Mr. Wilkerson just patched things up. So she's probably on...look she just needs you right now." "Okay, Aiden I'll call you in a couple of hours." I felt confined in this small space, but I needed to breathe. I thought about all that has transpired today and suddenly I felt like everything was closing in on me. I'm a mess; everything is scrambled in my head. I mean is this fates way of bringing Aaron and I back together. This is what I mean I don't even believe in fate. Am I being presumptuous in assuming Aaron still loves me or even likes me? I can't stay in here forever, I have to think. I splashed some water on my face and tried my best to compose myself. As I was walking down the aisle I thought I saw Aaron hanging up the phone. She looked at me in disbelief as she slid into her seat. "Were you on the phone?"
"Umm, yeah I wanted you to have peace of mind. So I called Aiden." She looked astonished and said, "Well, what did he say?" "He said your Dad is conscious and he's getting an IV; they did a CT which didn't show any abnormalities. He was getting a MRI when I was on the phone with Aiden and they're waiting on more lab results." "So he's awake, that's good right? How long does a MRI take?" "I'm not sure, but I know it has to be read, Aiden said to call back in a couple of hours."
"Is it good or bad that the CT didn't show anything?" "I have to honestly say I don't know, if you want we can call Aiden back and ask." "No you've done more than enough; I can't let you make another call, it's way to expensive. I want you to know how much I appreciate everything you've done. It means more to me than you'll ever know. "No thanks necessary, I'd do anything for you and your family. We'll wait a little while and call back. I'm sure they are going to rush the results of the MRI; after all he is the Chief."
"Okay, but this time it's going on my credit card, no arguments." "Hannah, I want you to know that money doesn't matter. I really mean it when I say I'd do anything for you and you're family. We've known each other since before diapers, so money doesn't matter. It's nice to have something to spend my money on, especially a good cause. So, no more talk about money. I'm changing the subject now, let's talk about you." "What about me? What more could I tell you that you don't already know? I went to college, graduated, moved home with my parents, got engaged, pursued my track career, went house hunting, broke off my engagement and pursued my career some more, now I'm on a plane with you. See my life is an open book, so let's talk about you." "Whoa, you got that all out in one breath. An open book, huh. Okay, what do you want to know? I told you all about my job, there's nothing else to really tell. I live in a great town home in Bluewater Village. I spend most of my time running. So I haven't had much time for anything else, especially not dating." At that moment she started rummaging through her carry on. "What are you doing?" "According to page 5 of the Sim Star Weekly you seem to have time for dating. Here you are with Jessica Simpson and with Rhianna and Supermodel Liya Kebede."
"I can't believe you read that trash. I've never been out with any of those women, not to mention I've never met them. Hmm, look I'm also on page 6 with Hannah Wilkerson." I lightly punch his arm and he laughs. "You aren't even on page 6." "I know, I just can't believe you read tabloids." "I don't know why I read these either, I've read them since I was a teenager. Oh, now I've told you something you didn't know, so now it's your turn." I laughed, "Thanks for sharing your addiction to trashy tabloids." "Shut-up, I'm sure you have something you hid from the rest of the world. So tell me what it is?"
"Hmm, I don't have any." "Yeah, right sure you don't, I'm going to get it out of you before we get off this plane." "I'm going to cll Aiden again and check on your Dad." "Do you think he can talk?" "I don't know, we'll see. It's ringing. Hey A, what's going on now?" "He seems to be stabilizing, but we're waiting on some more tests to come back. How's Hannah?" "She's worried, but I've been keeping her entertained. Can he talk on the phone, she'd like to speak to him or her Mom, preferably both." "Yeah, hold on." I handed her the phone. I hear my Dad faintly say, "Hey, Ladybug, I'm fine I think your Mom's overreacting." "Oh, Daddy I'm so glad you're okay, I was so worried." "Why'd they call you, did you win at least?" "No Daddy I'm on a plane on my way home to see you." "Oh ladybug you shouldn't have done that. What about the money and your pending endorsement deals?" "Daddy, there will be other races and I squared my deal on Thursday." "Okay, Bug you're Mom wants to talk. Oh one more thing... Okay Erin just a second. Are you by yourself or did your coach come with you?" "Umm, no Aaron's with me, he's a great friend." "Yeah, he's a great guy, I've always liked him. I love you Bug, here's Mom." "Love you too, Daddy. "Hey Baby, are you okay? I know how much you worry. Is Aaron keeping your spirits up?" "Yes Mom, I'm okay now that I've talked to Daddy and Aaron's great company. How are you?" "I've been fine since your Dad woke up. I'm not going to hold you, these calls are expensive. I'll see you when you get here. I love you." "I love you too, see you soon." I love to watch her. She is perfect, smart, talented and beautiful. I hope I'm not staring.
"Hello, earth to Aaron. What are you over there thinking about?" Without thinking I blurted out, "You." She blushed and looked away. I just knew that I'd blown it. Then she smiled and asked... "What were you thinking?" I was curious to know if he was feeling the same as I was. "I was thinking... I can't believe you read those trashy tab..." "Oh my gosh, we're back on that are we? Okay, I know you have something you're not telling; you have a thing. Everybody has some "thing" they do in secret. So tell me what it is!" "You are demanding, I can't think of any "thing". Maybe I'll pick up your habit. Let me see that thing again."
"Oh, I'll let you see it alright." She rolled that paper up and started beating me with it. "Okay, Okay, I give, uncle, uncle, please stop. I throw up the white flag." She can't stop laughing; I mean it's one of those really great deep laughs and then she starts snorting. Of course, this makes us really laugh. We settle down when our meal is served. Hannah falls asleep soon after that and I just love to watch her. Her breathing is steady and deep, eyelids fluttering and her face is so peaceful; I stare at her wanting and not wanting to wake her. I love her so much. I wake up and Aaron is fast asleep. I wonder what he's dreaming about. He looks happy. I go to the restroom to splash water on my face and when I return he is awake. "Hey sleepy head you finally woke up." "Yeah, I don't even remember falling asleep. I think it was the in-flight movie that did it. Did you have a good nap?" "Okay, now that you're awake and I'm awake how about you tell me what your vice is." "Well, I told you I don't have any "thing" to tell of." "Come on Aaron I know there's something. Don't make me call Aiden, because I will." I laugh and confidently say, "You don't know his number, so there is nothing to tell." "I don't know his number, did you forget that he's married to my twin sister. I know that number by memory. So, what else have you got or are you ready to spill?"
"Okay, I'll tell you but I am swearing you to secrecy. Hold up your right hand and repeat after me, I do solemnly promise to never ever tell another living soul as long as I live. I need that pinkie, I want a pinkie swear." "I pinky swear never to tell. No just tell me, please?" "This is something that only Aiden knows about me. I have to begin with a tale of a young boy and a blanket. When I turned seven my Mom thought I was too old for a blankie, I mean blanket. When we were at school she was cleaning our rooms and she found it stashed under my pillow. She decided to go through the things in our room and put up stuff she believed we'd outgrown. Well my precious blanket went into a box and into the attic. I discovered this later when I went to bed for the night. I couldn't sleep, I tossed and turned until finally I got up and asked my Mom where it was. "I put it away in the attic, I think you're too old for it," she said. I went back to bed, but was unable to sleep and I begin to feel sick, very sick. I waited until my parents had gone to bed and I went into the attic with my flashlight and scissors. I found the box and cut a piece of it, and I slept fine for the rest of the night. So my "thing" is I still sleep with it under my pillow." I stared at him in disbelief and I couldn't help thinking that was the sweetest story I'd ever heard. "You still can't sleep without it?" "I don't know I guess I've never tried. I just knew you'd be laughing, that's why I've never told anybody." "Why would I laugh, I thought it was very endearing. I was thinking what if you forget it somewhere? What would you do then?" "I don't know I guess I have a ritual, whenever I get up I put it back in my bag. I guess I don't even think about it." I smiled and said, "Thank you for sharing that with me, it makes me feel special." "You are special," I murmured. She looked surprised, but I pressed on before I lost the nerve. "I'm sorry. I thought I was doing the right thing in college, but I've been lost and heartbroken since I broke up with you. You are the most important person in the world to me and you always have been and I've wasted a lot of time acting like you're not. I wish I could undo the past, but I know I can't, but I can change the future. I want to give you the world if you'll give me the chance. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, I love you Hannah always have and always will." She just stares at me and I plunge in. This was unlike any kiss we'd shared in the past. I pulled her close to me and the kiss took on a life of its own. Her lips were soft against my own and I knew the memory of this kiss would last a thousand lifetimes. She kissed me back with so much passion that I wished this moment could last forever, but it soon ended. "The captain has turned on the seat belt sign, so we ask that you remain seated." It's very cute and lovely, hopefully the plane doesn't crash, since I know there is a crashed version of the plane cos I have it. I like how it switches from people's points of view so we can get an overall idea of the characters. Look forward to the next part.
