Friend or foe? (1) Disappearance

Hi, finally I made the first part of this story. It took me too long but I can't stand how slow is my computer since I've installed Bon Voyage. I think I need a new videocard 'cause mine isn't the best. Maybe I'll ask one for Xmas :)

Now, enough of the whining, let the story continue!

"So, you say this is not an apoplexy but a murder. How do you know it?" asked Gary.

"Well, at first it looked like an apoplexy, the symptoms said it too. But, there is one thing which can only mean that Mr. Wytham got murdered" answered Alex, the coroner.

"You know Alex, I trust in every word you say. So please, state it at last, I'm curious" said Gary.

"Very well then, the truth is that he got poisoned. He got varicosevein inflammation so he had to receive Heparin. This is a medicine which he was given by injection. The Heparin heals in small doses but if you overdose it, Heparin becomes a very strong poison. The symptoms are similar to an apoplexy" Alex explained to Gary.
"Yeah, like all the other medicines, I understand. How do you know that he got an overdose? Are there any signs of it?" asked Gary with curiosity.

"Yes, they are. The overdose causes a bleeding in the mouth. If you look into the victim's mouth you can see that it's all over black bacuse of the clotted blood" answered Alex.

"I see. I think this is enough proof for a murder. Thank you Alex" said Gary and they both left the room. There work was done here.
When Gary left the room he bumped into the policewoman.

"Gary, the forensics finished their task, one of them is waiting for you down the hall to inform you about the evidences they've found" she said.

"Thanks Anette. We've finished here, you can go back to the station now" Gary said and they went down to the hall.
"Good evening, I'm Nick Brandis. You must be detective Rico, nice to meet you" the forensic greeted Gary.

"Good evening, Mr. Brandis. So, what did you find here? I'm curious about every little detail" Gary said.

"Well, let's start at the beginning. The porter is always here until 7 pm, so he left about an hour before Mr. Wytham got murdered. That's because we've found the front door locked" answered the forensic.
"But the back door was opened, the murder used it that's obvious. We've found some high heel prints in the rug, so the murder must be a woman" continued forensic Brandis.

"But what if it was done by 2 person? We don't know if it was only a woman or if she had a partner" Gray stated.

"That's true. But we will find it out because we also found a syringe with some fingerprints on it. We sent it to the laboratory. The syringe came from a locked drawer. Only 2 person had a key to it, one of them is Mr. Wytham himself and the other one is his personal assistant, April Sanders" answered the forensic.
"And what about the security camera? I'm sure that they have some cameras in this building" asked Gary.

"Yes, there are 2 cameras, but the tapes are missing. The murder should have taken them with herself" anwered Brandis.

"That's a bad news. Anything else?" asked Gary.

"Yes, there is one important thing. We found a pair of gloves. It should belong to a woman too. We sent them as well to the laboratory, maybe they found some DNA in it but that's it so far" said the forensic.

"Okay, thank you Mr. Brandis. Inform me if you have anything new about the case. Good night!" said Gary and the forensic left.
Gary haven't left yet, he wanted to have a look at the backdoor. It leads to the emergency stairs behind the building.

'So she left the scene on the backdoor but where did she go next?' wondered Gary while he looked around for some clue. 'We should pay a visit to this personal assistant, maybe she could tell us something new.' he thought and went back to the policestation.
Some hours before Gary looked around in the lane behind the office building, April hurriedly had left it. After she had seen her boss dead in his office she escaped through the back door. On the street she looked for a telephone to call her best friend. She was shocked and frightened, she needed some help. "Hi Nina, it's me, April. Can I ask you a favour? Can I come to your place tonight? I'll go home for some necessary things and I'll be there at you about an hour, okay?" asked April.

"Of course you can come. But what's wrong April? I can hear in your voice that something is happened to you" answered April's friend, Nina.

"I will tell you everthing when I'll be at your place. Now I have to go, see you in an hour!" April said and with it she hunged up the phone.
After the phonecall April walked home. She was glad that she lived only a few blocks away from the office. When she entered the building the porter was busy with the fish so he didn't notice her. She didn't know why but she felt that it's better if she don't greet him so he won't know that she's at home. She went into her appartement quietly, she didn't even turn the lights on so nobody will know that she's at home. She collected a few things that she needed for the night and the next days. She has just finished when she heard a car braking in front of this building. She walked to the front windows and peeped out to the street. She was frightened when she saw two policeofficers and one other man standing in front of the entrance door. The other man looked like a chiefofficer or a detective. It was obvious who this little group are looking for. She quickly thrown her things into a small suit-case, picked up her purse and went to the bedroom. There she opened the window and jumped out to the roof of the other building next to her appartement. A moment later the two officers arrived in front of her door and rang the doorbell. She didn't waste the time, she cast down her suit-case to the street and then climbed down on the ladder which was leaned against the wall.
'Thanks for the construction some months ago and for the workers who forgot it here' she thought to herself.
When she was down she picked up her suit-case and headed to the other side of the street to catch a taxi and get to her friend, Nina.
What she didn't know was that Gary hadn't gone inside the appartement house. He was looking around the building when he saw a young, attractive woman who had long red hair walking out from the lane hurridly.

'Hey, it's Downtown, all the people are in a hurry here' he thought to himself and then he went inside to the appartement.
When Gary stepped into the flat he saw the two policeofficers standing in the middle of the nicely decorated living room.

"She isn't at home, sir. The porter didn't saw her coming home tonight. It seems that nothing is missing, only one window is opened in the bedroom" the policeman informed Gary.

"Okay, thank you. I'll just have a quick look around and then we can go" Gary said.
He walked around in the small but pretty flat, he found nothing interesting or something which could be related to the case. When he was about to leave he noticed a photo on the wall. He went closer to have a look at it. On the photo there were two young and good-looking women, one with tanned skin and black hair and one with light skin and long, red hair... He immediately knew it, that the woman who he has seen in the lane before was April. She was here some moments before they arrived. 'But why did she escape? And why did she come home secretely, even the porter didn't notice her...' he wondered.

"Okay, we can go now. The woman isn't here and she won't come back. The window is open because she was here before we arrived. She exitted through the window" Gary said to the officers and with it they left the appartement.
They went back straight to the policestation. It was late now, only a few policemen stayed there, who were on duty this night. Gary sat in front of a computer and started to search in the database. He found the will of Mr. Wytham. If April Sanders is a beneficiary it would be a great motive for a murder. But she wasn't. Steve Wytham left all of his fortune to his wife, Catherine Wytham. 'So she didn't have a motive. That's a dead end' he thought to himself. 'But then why did she escape from the police? There should be something that she's definitely hiding. I will find it April, I will... But first tomorrow I'll visit the widow' he thought, then he headed home. In an other part of Downtown, April arrived at her best friend, Nina's house. When she let April in, they hugged each other. They don't meet too often but still are best friends.

"Hi April, come in. I'm so worried, tell me everything, what had happened to you?" Nina asked.
They sat in Nina's living room. April didn't waste the time, she started the whole story at the beginning.

"As always I finished my work at 6 pm, but today I was working a little bit over so it was about 7 pm when I left the office. About on half way home I relaized that I had forgotten my gloves in the office so I turned back" April said to Nina.

"And what happened next? Some robber attacked you on the way back to the office?" Nina asked.
"Unfortunately not. I arrived at the office and went inside. This was about 7:45 pm. I went up to my office and I was looking for my gloves when I heard some noises. First they came from Steve's office, then from the corridor. It was just some seconds then it was all quiet again" April continued.

"Hmm, maybe someone was still there just like you" Nina said.

"Yes, I thought maybe the porter stayed a little bit longer and I heard him leaving so I didn't entertain with the thing. But I found my gloves nowhere so I went over to Steve's, if maybe I forgot them there" April's voice trailled off.
"And what? Was there something strange in his office?" Nina asked.

"Yes, it was. When I stepped in I found him lying on the floor. Next to him there was an empty syringe. You know, he was ill, he got Heparin. I thought he'd felt bad and gave an injection to himself. I went closer to him and that was when I realized that he was dead" said April with a low and sad voice.

"Oh my God, poor man! What did happen to him?" asked Nina surprisingly.

"I don't know. I was frightened, I called the police and then escaped through the back door. After it I called you that I wanna stay here tonight" she answered.
"Okay, just relax. You can stay here tonight. I'm sure the police will look for you so you can't stay long but I know you a great place where you can be in safe while these horrible things come to an end" Nina said calmly. She was a true friend who you can always trust in. She called her cousin who lived in the suburb and informed her that April will move in for a while. Her cousin was happy to help her. On that same night April went to the nearest hairsalon.

"Hi, can I help you miss?" asked the hairdresser.

"Yes I would like to have a haircut. I need a total different look. You know, my boyfriend left me and I wanna start a whole new life somewhere far away from him" she lied.
"Well, I think I understand you. Men are evil, don't trust any of them" the hairdresser said.

"I won't, that's sure" April said. Her lie was totally worked.

"Now come and a have a seat. Just be comfortable and when I'll finish even your mother won't recognise you" the hairdresser said smiling.
April let her do what she want to do. She just sat in the chair and waited for the result. She was a little bit scared, what if she will end up with, let's say, pink hair?! But the hairdresser understood her situation and did her best. She cut and coloured her hair, then she washed and dried it. And after two hours... "Tada!" she shouted and held a mirror in front of April's face. "Hope you'll like it!"

"Oh my, I can't believe in my eyes! That's fantastic, I totally love it!" said April. And that was true, she liked her new hair. She felt sorry for her long hair a little bit but she liked the new colour so much. She gave a big tip to the hairdresser and went back to Nina's home.
Next day Gary Rico and a policeofficer arrived in front of the Wytham Estate.
'So here we are, let's ask some questions from the sad widow' Gary thought to himself.

"Detective Rico, I'll wait right here, just call me if you need some assistance" said the policeman. Gary nodded and went inside to the decent house.
After he knocked on the door and stepped in a maid came to greet him.

"Good afternoon sir, can I help you?" she asked.

"Hello, I'm detective Rico. I'm the one who investigate in Mr. Wytham's case. I would like to talk to Mrs. Wytham if it's possible" said Gary.

"Of course sir, she's in the salon, please go ahead through that door" she pointed behind herself and then left the hall.
When Gary stepped into the salon Mrs. Wytham was reading a book. When she saw him, she immediately got up and put away the book.

"Good afternoon, I'm Catherine Wytham. How can I help you?" the pretty woman asked.

"Good afternoon Mrs. Wytham. I'm Gary Rico, a detective I would like to ask some questions about your deceased husband" Gary informed her.

"Of course, and please just call me Cathrine, I feel so old of Mrs. Wytham. Take a seat please. It's more comfortable to sit than to stand when you're talking" she said with a sweet voice.
"So, are there any unpshot in the case?" she asked with curiosity.

"Well, Cathrine, not so much. I can't say too much but we knew that the murder must be a woman. We've found some evidences with fingerprints and maybe DNA. Our people are already working on it in the laboratory" he explained to her.
"And what about the safety camera's tape? I'm sure it has filmed the murder. Nobody can walk into the building without being filmed" she said.

"Well, I think that's true. The only problem is that the murder took the tapes with her. It would be the best evidence but of course she was smart and took it" he said with regret.
"So you said that it was a woman... I kind of knew it. You know, he was rich and handsome, a lot of woman wanted to take him from me. But he was a loyal man, I loved him so much" she said with a voice full of emotion.

"I understand. Would you please tell me if there is anyone who could be an enemy of him? Maybe a rival or a collegue from business. Or is there any fake lover or an exwife with a baby maybe?" he asked the usual questions.
"Well, let me think... I don't know about any rival who'd hate him that much. About the lovers and exgirlfriends, as I said before he was a loyal man, he didn't have a lover. Maybe some of his collegues. There are some of them who are envy on him. But there's one person who would definitely have a motive. That's April Sanders, his right hand" she guessed.

"Why do you think that? Please tell me everything about their partnership" Gary asked.

"As I said before she was her right hand, a very helpful and hard-working employee. But her true self is a selfish and egoistic person, she wanted all of his power to herself. She was also very seductive, she tried to seduce him from me several times. She would win a lot with his death, it's a great motive, isn't it?" Catherine asked with a little fury.
"Or what if she reached her goal? What if she got to seduce him? Oh my, I can't believe it, if she was so selfish to murder him!" Catherine said with a dramatic voice.

"Well, we don't know, but we will investigate it. I think that will be enough for today, thank you for your help, Catherine" Gary said.

"Your welcome" said Catherine with a flirty smile.

What they didn't know that the Wythams' maid listened to their whole conversation and was very surprised by what she had heard. She hid behind the door and acted like she was cleaning the shelves in case if they would see her.
Some hours before Gary's visit to the Wythams' April was awake, reading the daily newspaper to find any facts about the murder. She knew that it should be published, and she was right, there it was.

"Steve Wytham, the famous millionaire who has a very successful firm in Downtown, was killed last night. The police says that he got an overdose of Heparin. We wanted to ask Gary Rico, the detective who got this case about any detail but he said that he didn't give out any information yet." she read the article.
'So, Mr. Rico, you are who I need. Let's check the internet what we have to know about you' she thought to herself.

"Schools, qualities, previous jobs, medals, lots of foolish, nothing interesting" she said out loud.

'It seems I need to do some dangerous and serious actions to get any information about this case' she thought and with it she turned off the computer.
After the sun set she left her best friend's house and went straight to the office. As she expected nobody was there. She checked the safety cameras but they were turned off. She went up to the second floor and stepped into her deceased boss' office.

'Hmm, they removed the persian rug and the drawer of the medicines is still opened. But only Steve and I have a key to it...' she thought to herself.
She went to the phone and checked if there are any messages or calls. She was surprised when she saw that Mr. Wytham called her office's phone on that night when he got murdered.

'But he should knew that I wasn't here, at 7 pm I always leave for home' she said thinking.

She looked around in the office. Some things and documents were missing, maybe the forensics had taken them away. Her gloves were still missing too.
After she finished in her boss' office she went over to hers to check on her gloves one last time. When she opened the door she was shocked. A man was sitting in front of her computer! When he stood up and looked at April she immediately recognised him from the photo in the newspaper. "Good evening detectice Rico. What are you doing here so late at night?" she asked as calm as she could. She didn't know if he was recognize her or not.

"Good evening Miss Sanders, so we've already knew each other, there's no need of an introduction" he said. He had a warm, friendly voice. "You know, I like the high heels so much. When I stepped into the building I could hear that someone is on the second floor. I'm here to have a look on your work, maybe I would find something interesting related to the case."
"Your new look is misleading but I could recognise you. You know, they say that a guilty man always returns to the scene. Wonder if it's true for you or not" continued Gary.

"So I'm revealed, you know now that I have a new appereance. But there's one thing you didn't know. I'm not guilty" she said with anger in her voice.

"Well, of course, you aren't guilty until the court doesn't say so" he said with a cold voice.
"Look Mr. Rico, I know you don't believe me, but I will proove it. I won't go to prison instead of the real murder. I saw that Steve called me before his death but I wasn't here. I was already left for home, you could easily check it if you watch the camera tapes" she began to explain.

"Well, we would check it but incidentaly someone took the tapes with her" answered Gary.

"So you say, that it was me. But I have to tell you I wasn't. I'm sure you've checked my appartement and you haven't find them" April said.

"That's because you were there before us. I saw an attractive woman in the lane after she climbed down on the ladder. But there I didn't know that it was you" Gary informed her.
"Lucky me. What about the syringe? I'm sure there are some fingerprints on it and I'm also sure that they aren't mine" she asked.

"We don't know it yet. Because they aren't in the database and we also don't have fingerprint samples from some people who might be concerned" he said and looked deep in April's eyes. "We also knew that you're the only one who had a key to his drawer where the Heparin was."

"Yes, that's true. But anyone could copy it. Or maybe steal it!" she said with enthusiasm.
"Remember one thing Mr. Rico! I'm not the one you are after. I will proove it one way or another, I swear!" she shouted. After it there was a huge bang behind the building. Gary immediately turned around and looked out on the window. After a second he regretted it, when he turned back April wasn't there anymore, he heard the door slam and running footsteps. He ran out from her office to the corridor where he bumped into the porter.

"Hello sir, I heard some noise from up here, I didn't saw you come in so I wanted to check who is this. I don't wanna bother you, just do what you need" the porter said.

Gary was furious. The porter wasted his time, but it was sure that April couldn't use the elevator. So he ran to the back door, leaving alone the surprised porter.
Before he stepped out to the stairs he had already knew that he won't see anybody. The lane was empty, only the lot of litter and boxes were there. April was nowhere to be seen. She disappeared.

That was the first part. I'm so glad that it's finally ready. This story is a new challenge to me because during writing I have to use the dictionary a lot to search for the new words which I need but don't know. It's a little bit tiring, but at least I'm learning new things. See you! :)
