This is the third part of this story, fortunately now it only took 2 weeks for me to finish this chapter. I'm so proud of myself :D
So, what are you waiting for? Read on! After April luckily escaped from the police headquarters without being noticed, she went back to Oliver's and went straight ahead to the bathroom. She had a relaxing shower to calm down her nerves because even now when she was safe, she was still shaking. She thought about the facts that she discovered and how she could manage to escape from Gary again.
When she had come down to the entrance hall with the elevator she hadn't run towards the street because it would have been peculiar, instead of she had went to the women's powder room, waited for some minutes and then she'd simply walked out of the building. When she finished her bath Oliver was waiting for her in the living room, he was eager to hear about her findings.
"I'm so glad that you came back without being caught. Now don't leave me waiting, tell me everything you have discovered" said Oliver.
"Well, it was really exciting, I'm still shivering but it was worth it" April said. "Don't evade the subject, just cut it out at last!" Oliver said joking.
"Okay, okay, well what we haven't known yet it's that they've found my lost gloves at the scene, and that detective could get some fingerprints from me when I went back to the office" said April.
"Oh darn, and then what? They won't find your fingerprints on anything because you didn't do it, right?" he asked. "I hope so. But there is one thing which is definitely strange. They say, every murderer has a motive, right? But they haven't found it yet" April stated.
"And what? Do you know something that they don't? You are aware of a possible motive, aren't you?" he asked hoping.
"Nope, but it will find out. And I know where to start. I have to visit our company's notary public, Mr. Carrell. I think there's something wrong with the will of Mr. Wytham" April said with resolution.
Then she cooked something for dinner while Oliver tended the plants in the garden. On that same day after Gary had searched the nearby streets for April, he went back to the headquarters to see if someone had seen her. He approched the receptionist officer who was busy with her computer. "Hi officer Wallis" he read her badge "I would like to ask you some questions" he said.
"Of course, how can I help you?" asked the red haired policeofficer.
"I wonder if you have noticed a policeofficer with black hair, she came here before an hour and went up to the detective's department" Gary asked. "Well, let me think of it. You know, I would like to help you but there are a lot of officers who stop by here, I'm sorry I can't really remember them all. Especially if she didn't ask for help and I didn't talk to her" she said.
"I understand, thank you for your help" said Gary and went up to the second floor where the other detectives work. When he stepped out from the elevator, he noticed a young officer with a blue headband. He remembered her, she had been here before, when April had come to the department. 'I'm lucky' he thought. "Hi, I'm detective Rico and you are Daniels, right?" he asked.
"Yes, Mr. Rico, how can I help you?" asked detective Daniels.
"I'm looking for a policeofficer with black hair. She was here an hour before, and I'm certain that she was looking for something in our database" he said. "Sure! I remember her, I found it a little bit strange that she was unfamiliar to me but I thought that maybe she's new, you know she's very young and seemed a little bit unsure" she answered.
"Can you recall what was she doing here? Where did she go and what did she do?" asked Gary.
"She went to the table next to mine and searched the computer for awhile and then she exitted. I can't remember anything else" she said.
"Thanks Daniels, it was a great help" said Gary and went to the mentioned notebook. He hoped that noone used the notebook since then so he recalled the last viewed documents and folders to learn what she had been looking for. He was lucky again, he got records only from his case. April had read all the evidences (about the fingerprints, DNA and objects). She also watched all of the photos from the scene and read the autopsy report again. She read all of the information, declarations and descriptions about the involved people in this case. As he could tell she now know everything that he knows as well. But there was one thing he didn't understand. If she murdered Mr. Wytham, she should know everything about the case so why she had taken a huge risk and came here to learn the gathered information? 'What if... but no... or maybe... there's one possible explanation to this question. If she's right and she isn't the murderer, she only wants to clear herself, that's why she needs the information and that's why she undertook to this risky action' he thought to himself. The next day April went to the house where the company's notary public lived.
'This is certainly his home, there is his Lexus parking next to the house' she thought to herself 'Wonder why I haven't got such an expensive car, maybe I've choosen the wrong profession' she said to herself and then stepped into the house. He found Mr. Carrell and his son in their living room. When she walked into the room Mr. Carrell looked up from the daily newspaper and seemed a little bit surprised but not frightened at all. April stopped in front of him and said: "Good morning Mr. Carrell" she didn't know how he will react for her visit.
Robert Carrell sat for some moments in silence then he stood up and hugged April.
"Hi my dear, April. It's good to see you!" he said with a soft voice. April took him for a friend but she wasn't sure how he will act if he faces a "murderer", so she was glad that he really was a friend. "Hi Ray!" April greeted the boy in front of the computer. Mr. Carrell saw her face and understood her sign.
"Ray, my son, please leave us alone, we have some important talk with April" he said.
"Okay, Dad, I'll be in my room. Good to see you April" he said then went to his room and closed the door behind him.
"I just don't want him to get in any trouble" said April silently. "I understand, my dear. Now tell me everything, I heard that poor Steve is dead and now the police is looking for you everywhere but it's hard to recognise you with this new hairstyle" he smiled.
"Thanks. Well it's a long story, to make it short, they suspect me as the murderer of Mr. Wytham and I'm trying to prove it that I'm innocent" she said. "Oh my God, poor girl. Now sit down and tell me the whole story about it, I'm curious to know every detail" Robert said "And I suppose you're in need of my help, that's why you're here, right?"
"Yes, Mr. Carrell" she said unsure. She didn't know if coming here was a good idea or not. She didn't want to hurt these people by causing trouble. "Well, it all started with my damn gloves, I forgot them in my office so I went back to the officebuilding around 7.30 pm. And when I didn't find them in my office I went over to Steve's office and that was when I found him dead" she said.
"Oh my, and then the police came and they declaired you as the main suspect, right?" he asked. "Well, sort of. After I found Steve I called the police but didn't wait them, I left the whole building behind me and went to my friend's appartement. I couldn't stay there" said April sadly.
"Poor child, but I can totally understand you. And tell me, how can I help you?" he asked.
"I would like to see Mr. Wytham's will. Maybe if I'm not a beneficiary they won't suspect me anymore" she answered. "Well, it's against the law but I'll show you, my dear. If the police finds out, I'll tell them that I didn't notice you when you were here." April just opened her mouth to say something but he interrupted her.
"Don't worry, I'll tell them that I was out in the garden and Ray wasn't at home. Oh and Ray, I'm sure he won't say anything, he likes you just like me" he said.
All April could say was a quiet "thanks" she was so grateful to this man and this family. "Here it is, I've found it. Let's have a seat here, it's not too long but I let you read it for yourself" he said and then he stood up and April engaged his seat. He stood a little farer and let her to read the whole document and then she will ask questions, he was sure of it. April was so curious, she didn't know what she'll find but she hoped that this will her proof for her innocence. "Wow, this is strange. I was certain that Mr. Wytham changed his will because in that one what the police has, the only beneficiary is his wife, Cathrine, and we both know that their relationship cooled down in the past few months. But now the only heiress is Tamia Taylor, their maid?!" she asked. "Yes my child. As for my knowledge, she was the lover of Steve. We don't know if she only loves his money or himself as well but it's certain that Steve loved her and he bequeathed all of his fortune to her" he said. April's chin dropped. Now she had something which is a great ace in her hands. Now she only has to play it out good.
"I can't tell you Mr. Carrell how much I thank you for this. I think I've found something which is a good motive for a murder and it can clear me. Thank you so much" she said. Robert said that he was glad to help her then they hugged each other once again and said goodbye. Even Ray came out from his room and waved goodbye to April when her taxi arrived. She could tell by his wink that he was eavesdropping the whole time. While April was at Mr. Carrell, Gary sat in his office, trying to find anything about the mysterious e-mails. Who sent them to Wytham and why but the "why" was evident, they were loveletters. When he didn't find anything on the internet he wanted to call the mail-client's server or host to ask them who this "t.a.t.a." is, but he can't reach them. Then he sat back to his notebook and asked a friend of him who was actually a hacker, to hack into this mail address but he can't help Gary. He's starting to get angry when his phone rang. He picked it up a bit bigger zeal than it was necesarry, he almost dropped the receiver. When he answered the phone the caller's voice was familiar. It was April. "Where on Earth are you April? And what did you do at the police HQ?" he asked. He didn't notice but called her on her first name, because he knew a lot about her and he felt they're acquaintances for a long time.
"It doesn't matter, Gary. I have some important information for you and I'll share with you if you fulfil some conditions" April said.
"Okay, tell me what you want and I'll do it" he answered.
"Meet me at the café, which is at the Pine Square. Tomorrow at 2 pm. Come alone" she said then hunged up. Gary had no choice but accept her conditions. The next day at 2 pm, April stood at the end of the Pine Square. She chose this time because at around 2 pm this place was always full of people, so if she has to escape she can do it easily in the crowd. But for her safety, Oliver watched the park from a distance and it was agreed that if he saw a single policeman nearby, he call April. So she walked towards the café, stepped in and on her right he saw Gary sitting, so she sat in front of him.
"Hi April. Now can you please tell me what is this all about? Why did you want to meet with me?" asked Gary.
"Because as I said before I have some important information about the case which I wanted to share with you without being caught by the police" she stated. "Okay I understand. But what is this mysterious information? Maybe something which is prove your innocence in the murder of Steve Wytham?" he asked.
"Well, well, so now you believe me that I'm innocent? Anyway, that's exactly what you said" answered April. She was interrupted by the waitress who came to their table.
"Good afternoon, what would you like to drink?" she asked.
"Are you drink coffee?" April shook her head. "Then we would like to have two ice teas please" said Gary and so the waitress left. "So, as I said before, I've found some documents which will clear me. To be exact, I was at the notary public of Mr. Wytham's company and he gave me the latest and valid will of Steve" she continued.
"You mean, what we have at our database is out of date? And is there any changes in it?" Gary asked.
"Yes, your one isn't valid, Mr. Wytham made the last changes in it two days before his death. And there's a new beneficiary. Here they are, you can find everything in these folders" she put a lot of documents on the table. Gary opened the first one and read it. It was true, this is a new and seemed to be valid will of the victim and the new heir is their maid.
"I'm speechless. This is truely a good motive for a murder. But I have some other things which I don't understand. The victim had some e-mails from his lover, but I don't know who this could be. the mail address is t.a.t.a.@hotmail.com" said Gary.
"Oh, that's easy, even if you haven't said the mail I'd known it. His lover was their housemaid, and t.a.t.a. is from her name, Tamia Taylor" she said. Suddenly her cellphone rang, it was Oliver, he noticed some strange people at the square.
"I thought you'd come alone, now there are some policeofficers out there!" she shouted with disappopintment.
"But I haven't told anybody about our meeting, I swear" he said. He was as surprised as April about this news. "Relax, I'll help you get out of here. I have a plan. Come closer" he said and April leaned closer to him. Gary whispered his plan to her ears fast, so they could act quickly. He called for the waitress and April got up and went out to the women's powder room. Gary paid some (or not some but a little bit more) simoleons to the waitress so if any policeman ask her, he was sitting here with a fair-haired woman who seemed to be his cousin. Then April came out from the powder room and got some soap with her. She went to the huge fountain and pourred the whole box of soap into it just like Gary said to her. After some second all of the people here at Pine Square gathered near the fountin to see the bubbles. In this crowd she could easily escape towards the street where she got a taxi and went to Oliver. Gary came out to the fountin as well as the other people in the café. When he saw April he winked at her and then started to examine the bubbles. Now the policeofficers were also there. One of them recognised him and went to talk to him, the others serached the square for April.
"Hi Mr. Rico, we were informed that April Sanders called you in your office, so we were ordered to follow you here. Was she here?" the policeman asked.
"I don't think so. But I don't know, I came here to have a little chat with my cousin, you know, I'm not working right now" he said innocently.
"Ehm, okay, thanks for your cooperation" said the officer and then wnet to his collegues and told them that it was a false alarm. Gary stood there for a little longer, watching the last bubbles and the people who went back to their business again. He smiled to himself about the events. He felt a little bit guilty but he believed April now. 'No, she isn't a murderer, but a very smart and beautiful woman' he thought to himself and headed home. The next morning Gary rushed straight ahead to the Wytham estate to find Tamia and talk to her. In front of the house their was a man, who seemed to be their gardener. 'Hmm, I haven't seen him yet' Gary thought and walked towards him. "Hi, I'm detective Rico, are you working for the Wythams? I haven't seen you around yet. Are they at home right now?" Gary asked.
"Good morning detective. Yes, I'm Eric Dominguez, I'm the gardener here. I'm only here 3 times a week, that's why you haven't seen me yet, I think" he answered.
"Can you please tell me, Mr. Dominguez, is Tamia inside the house?" asked Gary. "She's not here right now, I'm sorry" Catherine answered his question. She heard Gary's voice and came out of the house.
"Hi Catherine. I have some new evidences and I must talk to her. Can you tell me where is she right now?" asked Gary. 'How dare he's calling her on her first name! Or... maybe she allowed it to him? Who the hell is this detective?' thought Eric furiously while he watched their conversation behind Gary's back. "Of course, I can tell you Gary. She's propably at home right now watching some soap-operas, she likes them you know" she laughed.
"Can you please write her address on a piece of paper? It's important that I find her immediately" said Gary asking. "Here it is, always at your service" she said while writing down the maid's adress on the paper. Then Gary thanked her help and said goodbye. He didn't waste time, he called a policeman and rushed to the address right away.
When Gary couldn't see him, Eric followed Catherine into the house with an evil smile. Half an hour later Gary and the policeofficer arrived at Tamia's appartement. The policeman knocked on the door and said: "Tamia Taylor, please open the door." Some moments later they heard footsteps and then the door was oepened. A surprised Tamia stood in front of them. She noticed Gary and asked nervously:
"What is this all about? Are you looking for me? What have I done?"
"Can we please come in and sit down?" Gary asked and they both went inside her flat. "What a lovely and modern flat is this. Do the maids earn a lot of money these days? Maybe I change my profession..." said Gary teasing.
"Well, I've got some furniture from my friends. But I think you didn't come here all along to talk about my belongings, did you?" she asked defensively. "That's right, we're here because we've found the deceased Mr. Wytham's will. And it was a surprise what we have found in it. Guess who is the only one beneficiary of his money?" asked Gary, trying to notice any emotion in Tamia's eyes.
"I know nothing about his will, detective Rico. Can you please tell me directly what are you want from me? I'm confused, you know..." she said with a little fear in her voice. "Well, it's you, who is the one and only heir of his forutne. And that's not all, we've found some loveletters - e-mails - on the victim's computer, and we know that they're from you" Gary informed her.
"I... I don't know what are you talking about... I had nothing to do with Steve" and when she said that she knew that she made a mistake, she called him on his first name.
"Well, in that case, you surely allow me to have a look at your computer. In that case you don't, Mr. Peterson will give you the warrant we have" said Gary. "Okay detective, you can find it in my bedroom" she said abandoned.
"Here they are" Gary smiled to himself when he found all the sent and recieved mails. "Miss Taylor, I have to tell you that these evidences show a really good motive for a murder, so from now on you're a suspect in this case" he continued. "Oh my God, poor Steve!" she cried. "I loved him with all of my heart, I didn't want him dead, you have to believe me, I didn't do this horrible thing to him!" she sobbed helplessly.
"That's not mean that you did it, I only said that you have a great motive but it's not make anyone a murderer. We don't arrest you until we don't prove that you killed him. But please don't leave the city until the end of the investigation" Gary said to the still crying Tamia. Now he had something in his hands, it was time for him to report to his chief.
That's the end of chapter 3, hope you liked it. Stay tuned for the next part as well! Thanks for reading! :)
