Failure, Feuds & Fights - Dusty's Story.

Dusty's story begins with him as a child. He lived in the suburbs with his parents, Sunny and Rainee. It was far from a happy home.
His father Sunny worked as a lawyer and seemed unable to unwind after a hard days work at the office. He was always lecturing Dusty, telling him to study harder at school, to do his homework and to be better behaved. Sunny seemed to want Dusty to grow up to be just like him but Dusty had no dreams of being a lawyer. Dusty's lack of enthusiasm for school often created arguments with his father. Sunny was always arguing with Rainee as well. Any little thing would trigger an argument and Dusty had spent many sleepless nights listening to them arguing though his bedroom wall. He feared that they would never be able to sort out their differences and that they would get get a divorce. He loved his mother Rainee and hated seeing her upset after another argument. Rainee was fun to be with and would rather play games with Dusty than force him to read a book like Sunny would. Rainee was the one who had brough Dusty a pet cat called Romeo. She thought that it would be good for him to have a pet to love and play with, even though she knew Sunny hated having animals in the house. As time went on the arguments became more frequent... ...and Rainee was often left in floods of tears afterwards. Eventually it all became too much for Rainee and she had a breakdown. Once Rainee recovered enough from her breakdown to be able to think things through she realised she would never be happy with Sunny and so she decided to divorce Sunny and leave to live alone. She hated having to leave Dusty with his father but she didn't have the energy or the money to battle him though the courts for custody. Besides, she knew that Sunny was an excellent lawyer would use every argument possible to win. She promised Dusty she would see him every weekend and that he could call her as often as he wanted. Dusty was more upset about having to live with his father than the divorce. He spent his weekdays counting down the time til the weekend, the time when he could see Rainee. Just when Dusty felt things couldn't get any worse in his young life, his cat Romeo died. His father was unsympathetic, saying he was glad that the "yowling old furball" had gone, which just made Dusty even more upset. Rainee was much more understanding and surprised Dusty on one of her visits by bringing him a puppy. Dusty named him Benny. It was worth her argument with Sunny just for Rainee to see the smile on her son's face. Benny soon grew into an adult collie dog and Dusty loved spending time with him, teaching him tricks and playing with him. Sunny detested the dog though and was forever yelling at him and scolding him. Things were also changing with Sunny getting a new girlfriend, Tracey. He had met her when she came to work as a receptionist at his law firm and they had soon hit it off. After a few dates he began inviting over to his house for dates and she often spent the night. Although Sunny thought she was wonderful, Dusty couldn't stand her. From the moment they had met they hadn't gotten along. Tracey had made it perfectly clear to Dusty that she intended to be with Sunny and that she didn't want Dusty around. When she thought Sunny couldn't hear she would tease Dusty and make fun of him. Dusty tried to tell this to his father but he would either tell him to grow up or to stop telling lies. Sunny's romance with Tracey continued and eventually he asked her to move in. Dusty was furious when he was told the news. He felt that Sunny should at least have asked him beforehand and he lashed out angrily at Tracey. Sunny was furious with Dusty for this and there was a terrible fight between Sunny and Dusty, with Dusty losing.

After the fight, the atmosphere at home was terrible. Sunny and Dusty were barely speaking and Tracey's teasing of Dusty was just getting worse. He talked to Rainee every day on the phone as she was the only one who was nice to him and he often begged to come and live with her. It broke Rainee's heart to hear her son so upset and she wished she could do something but the flat where she lived was tiny and she only just earned enough to cover the rent on it. She couldn't afford to live somewhere bigger but she promised Dusty that as soon as she could he could come and live with her.
Dusty couldn't wait for that day to come. As well as a terrible home life, his grades at school were steadily getting worse. He was now regularly getting D and F grades on his homework. He tried to hide this from his father, knowing that it would result in yet more arguments and lectures. But he couldn't keep it from Sunny forever. One day Sunny had received a phone call from the school wanting to discuss Dusty's grades. It had come as a surprise to Sunny and he was furious with Dusty when he returned from school, telling him that he was wasting his life.

For the next few months Sunny was stricter than ever with Dusty. Dusty hated living with his father but gradually his grades improved.
As a reward for his improving grades Sunny allowed Dusty to throw a party for his friends, provided that he and Tracey were there too. Whilst Dusty wasn't crazy about the idea of adults being at his party he knew it was better than no party at all. He decided to invite Rainee too - if he was going to have adults there he may as well have at least one that he liked!

He planned it for a couple of weeks to make sure it would be one of the best parties the town had seen and he invited lots of his friends. It started off well with everyone enjoying the food Dusty had prepared or dancing to Dusty's choice of music.
But then things started to go wrong. Dusty watched in annoyance as his parents began to argue in front of his friends. He stepped in and got them to settle down, telling them that he didn't want them to ruin his party. He went back to enjoying himself, hoping that would be the only incident... ...but he was wrong! Sunny had also been planning for the party and had brought a ring to propose to Tracey with. Tracey accepted and whilst most people politely clapped, Dusty was furious! This was supposed to be his party and now people would just remember it as Sunny and Tracey's engagement party. Plus Sunny knew he and Tracey didn't get along, yet he had still chosen to propose to her, putting her ahead of his son. Rainee was also furious about the engagement, knowing how miserable Tracey made Dusty. After one too many drinks she began a fight with Sunny. Dusty ran to his room crying. This was the worst party ever! He lay curled up on his bed thinking about how his father had ruined it all and wishing that things were different. When Dusty finally came out from his room he had yet another argument with his father but this time it was far worse.
"You're determined to ruin my life!" yelled Dusty.
"You're doing a perfectly good job of doing that by yourself," snapped Sunny. "I work so hard to provide for you and all you can do is complain."
"But you're never here for me!" cried Dusty. "You're either at work or with her. The only time we spend together is for you to lecture me about what a failure I am or how I have to stop fighting with Tracey when she is the one who picked on me. I wish I lived with mum."
"I wish you did too!" yelled Sunny.
The next morning Sunny and Tracey discovered a note from Dusty saying he had run away. Instantly they both felt guilty and called the police. Whilst the police promised to look for him, they couldn't guarentee they would find him and Sunny spent a nervous few days waiting for the safe return of his son. Rainee was frantic when she heard the news and threated to do something terrible to Sunny if any harm came to Dusty. Dusty was eventually found and returned by the police after several nights spent sleeping on the streets. As soon as Rainee heard he was back she rushed round to see him. Then they all gathered inside to discuss what to do with Dusty. Dusty pleaded to come and live with Rainee, as he had done many times before. This time Rainee and Sunny agreed that it would be for the best and, as Rainee was now earning more and so could afford a larger house, there was no reason why not. Dusty left for his new life that afternoon. Life with his mother was a vast improvement on his old life. She treated him like a young adult, rather than a child who needed to be lectured all the time. He wondered how different his life could have been if he had gone to live with Rainee straight after the divorce but he knew it was no use dwelling on the past. All that mattered was that everything was ok now.

Nice story. Well written, and with good screenshots, too! \:rah\: \:rah\: It's really a pity not more people have read it yet. Actually, I wasn't really going to either (sorry, can't pinpoint why), but when I saw it was a DUSTY story, I just had to read it! I LOVE Dusty-stories, and have written a whole series on him myself. (You might like to read it, hint, hint \;\) )
