FROM RAGS TO RICHES

PART ONE

FROM RAGS TO RICHES

PART ONE
Our story begins here with Henry Adams, the owner of the largest and most profitable grocery store in Bluewater. Henry was in his 60s but he still worked at his store everyday. This was partly because he had been doing this all of his adult life and he enjoyed it... ...but it was also because it was the only time he got to interact with other people. Henry had worked so hard during his life and had been so focused on making his business a success that he had never had time for relationships. Now he found himself living alone in a vast house, wishing that he had taken more time to build friendships and to find a woman to settle down and have children with. He constantly wondered what would become of the business when he died as he had no child to hand it on to. The only company Henry had at home was his two cats - Cent and Dollar. He spoilt them by always buying them the best toys and the finest food but he knew it wasn't the same as having a real family. Henry's store had recently taken on a new checkout girl - Terri Jackson. She may not have been the best employee but she was always ready to learn and eager to help. Outside of work, Terri loved to go out downtown with her friends. She was young and lively and was always attracting admiring glances and wolf-whistles from men. Terri dreamed of a better life. She had very little money and lived in a one-bedroomed flat which was desperately in need of repairs but which she couldn't afford to have done. Often she would go window-shopping to dream of all the things she would buy if she had the money or to try on expensive coats and gowns which she knew she would never be able to afford on her low wages. One day whilst managing his store Henry's attention was caught by the lovely Terri. He watched her for a while as she worked and he thought how beautiful she was. Henry decided that although he was old he still might stand a chance with Terri and because this may be one of his last chances to find happiness with another woman he might as well take a chance. He began trying different chat up lines to himself in the bathroom mirror like he was a teenager again... ...and he finally managed to ask her out. Terri was very flattered to be receiving this attention from her wealthy boss and agreed to the date. Henry took Terri to a posh restaurant for a meal of lobster and champagne for their first date. All through the date Henry kept thinking how lucky he was to be dining with such an attractive, interesting young lady and Terri kept thinking how rich Henry must be. The date went well... ...although not everyone thought that they should be dating due to the 40 year age difference! Terri wasn't bothered by what other people thought and sent Henry a love letter to encourage him to keep seeing her. The love letter worked and Henry soon asked her on another date. Terri continued to be impressed by Henry's wealth and she often found herself daydreaming about how much better her life would be if she could spend his money and live his lifestyle. After a few more dates Henry asked her back to his place. Henry felt more alive and happier than he had in years. He knew some people were whispering that Terri was only after him for his money but he ignored it as best he could. He had found a partner and, maybe at some point in the future, the mother of his child. A few days after spending the night at Henry's for the first time, Terri met up with her best friend Marisa.
"It's fantastic - he's so rich! That guy must earn more in a year than I could in a lifetime," said Terri grinning. "Just think what I could do with all that money!"
"But do you love him?" asked Marisa.
"Does it matter?" giggled Terri. "He's crazy about me and he's rich - whether I love him or not isn't important. He can provide me with a lifestyle which most people can only dream of."
"So no, you don't love him, do you?" said Marisa, shaking her head in disapproval. "Have you heard Leo's back in town, by the way?"
"What?"
"Yeah, I saw him the other day. He wants to meet up with you."
Terri thought about it for a moment. Marisa was refering to Leonardo - an ex-boyfriend of Terri's who she had gone out with for a year but who had left her to travel around the world. At the time Terri had thought that he was crazy for doing it as they had very little money and she had decided not to go with him.
As Terri had often wondered how Leo had got on with his travels she decided to meet up with him. Leo was now an artist and was only in town for a few days for the opening of an exhibition at an art gallery which contained one of his paintings. Terri was surprised that he was actually making something of his life and making a decent amount of money - she had always imagined that he would have become a hippy or go broke after deciding to go travelling. Part of her was still attracted to him and wondered how her life would have turned out if she had decided to go travelling with him... ...but she felt now that her future lay with Henry and she was doing evereything she could to keep him sweet and to get to his money, including being nice to his spoilt cats. Terri met up with Marisa regularly to tell her how things were progressing. She could sense that Marisa didn't entirely approve of her dating Henry just for his money but she always listened patiently to Terri's bragging of gorgeous dresses and of luxurious houses. Then came the night that would change everything. Henry had asked Terri to spend the night, which wasn't anything strange, and it wasn't until a few weeks later that Terri realised... ...she was pregnant! Henry was delighted by the news as it meant he would now have a child to inherit the business and Terri was pleased because finally... ...Henry asked her to move in. Terri left behind her horrible, cramped flat and moved into Henry's vast home. Henry insisted that she didn't put too much strain on herself and the baby so she left her job at the store and spent her days relaxing at home whilst Henry went to work... ...with the help of a new employee. Terri was relieved that he hadn't chosen an attractive employee to replace her - she didn't what to risk Henry running off with someone else! Henry was very excited about having a baby. He thought that he would never have one as he was elderly so it was extra special to him. He got decorators to convert a spare room into a nursery for the baby and he suggested to Terri that they get married. Terri accepted and they set a wedding date for after the birth of the baby. Terri called Marisa to tell her the news.
"But do you love him?" asked Marisa.
"I wish you'd stop asking that!" hissed Terri. "I've told you it doesn't matter. He provides me with everything I want and I'm giving him the baby that he thought he would never have and providing companionship. As far as I'm concerned love doesn't come into it."
"But it should," insisted Marisa.
Soon Terri gave birth to a healthy baby boy called Bren. Henry still couldn't believe that he was actually Bren's father when he was old enough to be the baby's grandfather. Now that the baby was here the couple set about planning their wedding. Terri seemed excited, especially when she was choosing the dress... ...but on the big day she began to have second thoughts. Marisa's words kept running through her head about how love did matter. Terri knew she didn't love Henry and for a moment she considered calling the wedding off... ...but then she looked at Bren and knew she had to go through with the marriage. She wanted Bren to have the best of everything in life and never to have to struggle for money like she had. If she left Henry then Bren wouldn't live such a luxurious lifestyle, even if Henry did pay child support, and she would be back to living a normal life, maybe even back in a crumbling, neglected flat. The wedding went smoothly and soon she was Mrs Terri Adams, the wife of a wealthy man. But would it last?

That was a good story. I really don't think Terri has too much to worry about. Mr. Adams probably won't live too much longer.

Good story told in a straightforward style which made it very easy to follow, good job! I became a bit confused about who was who between Terri and Marisa, because they looked so similar.
