Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire /3/
Quidditch Cup
Harry disentangled himself from Ron and got to his feet. They had arrived on what appeared to be a deserted place in forrest. They set off and after about twenty minutes, a small stone cottage next to a gate swam into view. Beyond it, Harry could just make out the ghostly shapes of hundreds and hundreds of tents, rising up the gentle slope of a large field toward a dark wood on the horizon. They trudged up the misty field between long rows of tents. Halfway up the field stood an extravagant confection of striped silk like a miniature palace, with several live peacocks tethered at the entrance. A little farther on they passed a tent that had three floors and several turrets; and a short way beyond that was a tent that had a front garden attached, complete with birdbath, sundial, and fountain. They had reached the very edge of the wood at the top of the field, and here was an empty space, with a small sign hammered into the ground that read WEEZLY.
?Couldn?t have a better spot!? said Mr. Weasley happily. ?The field is just on the other side of the wood there, we?re as close as we could be.?
Harry had never been camping in his life. However, he and Hermione worked out where most of the poles and pegs should go and they finally managed to erect a pair of shabby two-man tents. Harry bent down, ducked under the tent flap, and felt his jaw drop. He had walked into what looked like an old-fashioned, three-room flat, complete with bathroom and kitchen. We?ll need water. ? said Mr. Weasley.
There?s a tap marked on this map the Muggle gave us, said Ron, who had followed Harry inside the tent.
Well, why don?t you, Harry, and Hermione go and get us some water then ? Mr. Weasley handed over the kettle ? and the rest of us will get some wood for a fire?
Here and there, they saw more familiar faces: other Hogwarts students with their families. Oliver Wood, the old captain of Harry?s House Quidditch team and a little farther on they saw Cho Chang, a very pretty girl who played Seeker on the Ravenclaw team. She waved and smiled at Harry, who slopped quite a lot of water down his front as he waved back. You?ve been ages? said George when they finally got back to the Weasleys tents.
Met a few people, said Ron, setting the water down. You not got that fire started yet?
Dad?s having fun with the matches, said Fred.
At last, the fire was ready, and they had just started cooking.
They were halfway through their plates of eggs and sausages when Mr. Weasley started grinning at a man who was striding toward them. Aha! he said. The man of the moment! Ludo!
Ludo Bagman was easily the most noticeable person Harry had seen so fars. He was wearing long Quidditch robes of Osbournes monkeys.
Oh ? go on then, said Mr. Weasley. Let?s see ? a Galleon on Ireland to win?
A Galleon? Ludo Bagman looked slightly disappointed. Very well, very well ? any other takers?
We?ll bet thirty-seven Galleons, fifteen Sickles, three Knuts, said Fred as he and George quickly pooled all their money, that Ireland wins ? but Viktor Krum gets the Snitch. Oh and we?ll throw in a fake wand.
Mr. Crouch! said Percy breathlessly, sunk into a kind of half-bow that made him look like a hunchback. Would you like a cup of tea?
Oh, said Mr. Crouch, looking over at Percy in mild surprise. Yes ? thank you, Weatherby.
Ludo Bagman said: Dont know when Ive had more fun. ? Still, it?s not as though we havent got anything to look forward to, eh, Barty? Eh? Plenty left to organize, eh? It?s happening at Hogwarts ?
What?s happening at Hogwarts, Dad? said Fred at once. What were they talking about?
You?ll find out soon enough, said Mr.Weasley, smiling.
It?s classified information, until such time as the Ministry decides to release it, said Percy stiffly. Mr. Crouch was quite right not to disclose it.
Oh shut up, Weatherby, said Fred.
And then a deep, booming gong sounded somewhere beyond the woods, and at once, green and red lanterns blazed into life in the trees, lighting a path to the field.
It?s time! said Mr. Weasley, looking as excited as any of them. Come on, let?s go!
Seats a hundred thousand, said Mr. Weasley, spotting the awestruck look on Harry?s face. Everything was suffused with a mysterious golden light, which seemed to come from the stadium itself.
The field looked smooth as velvet from their lofty position. At either end of the field stood three goal hoops, fifty feet high; right opposite them, almost at Harry?s eye level, was a gigantic blackboard.
Match was fast and cruel.
?IRELAND WINS!? Bagman shouted, who like the Irish, seemed to be taken aback by the sudden end of the match. ?KRUM GETS THE SNITCH ? BUT IRELAND WINS ? good lord, I don?t think any of us were expecting that!? For Fred and George had just scrambled over the backs of their seats and were standing in front of Ludo Bagman with broad grins on their faces, their hands outstretched.
Later in weasleys tent Harry, who was on a top bunk above Ron, lay picturing again some of Krum?s more spectacular moves. He was itching to get back on his own Firebolt and try out the Wronski Feint. ? Harry saw himself in robes that had his name on the back, and imagined the sensation of hearing a hundred-thousand-strong crowd roar, as Ludo Bagman?s voice echoed throughout the stadium, ?I give you ? Potter!?
Harry never knew whether or not he had actually dropped off to sleep all he knew was that, quite suddenly, Mr. Weasley was shouting.
?Get up! Ron ? Harry ? come on now, get up, this is urgent!?
By the light of the few fires that were still burning, he could see people running away into the woods, fleeing something that was moving across the field toward them, something that was emitting odd flashes of light and noises like gunfire. Loud jeering, roars of laughter, and drunken yells were drifting toward them; then came a burst of strong green light, which illuminated the scene.
