The Goths had settled well in Pleasantview and were beginning to get used to the weatern way of life.
"Father, please..."
"Don't be shy Gunther, be proud. She is beautiful and kind."
Cornelia blushed a little at this. "I must say Mr. Goth, we're quite surprised at all this. Cornelia has kept Gunther hidden away from us. We had no idea she even knew your boy, let alone loved him so." said Prudence, "She has been keeping it awfully quiet." "Well it's just..." started Cornelia, looking desperately at her beau for support.
"We were very nervous about how Mr. Crumplebottom would feel about us. My family is from another country. My mother was famous back home, but unsuccessful here. Also some people in Pleasantview think that my father is crazy because of his inventions." "It's true mama. You know what father's like when it comes to unusual things." added Cornelia.
"Well I'll be - "
"She has a point Simon. You do like things to be a certain way." agreed Prudence. "Don't worry dear. I have no reason to dislike this boy or his family. And there was certainly no need to hide him away from us for so many years. I'm sure he'll make a good husband." reassured Simon. After the Goths had left Prudence and Simon retired to the conservatory.
"Well he seemed a decent enough young man." said Prudence.
"I've seen their accounts...they may be rural but all that money!" said Simon, gleefully.
"I hope that's not your only concern."
"Of course not. I only want the best for our daughter." "Do you even like the boy?"
"..." "And you sat there, smiling and lying to the Goths all night?"
"If this is what Cornelia wants..."
"Don't lie to me. I can see the Simolean signs in your eyes...I remember when you used to care about people, about your family...now all you care about is money!" Prudence left him feeling quite alone. But if he had looked outside the conservatory... ...he would have seen that someone was v e r y interested in the conversation that had just taken place. Returning to the catacombs beneath the Pleasantview Crypt the Countess began to carry out her plan:
"Tell me Vladimir, do you ever think of your family?"
"They want nothing to do with me."
"What if I told your nephew was getting married..." "What does it matter?"
"What if I told you the girl was entirely unsuitable?"
"Why should I care?" "Oh but you do care..." interjected Lucy, "You've been absolutely no fun for ages and it's all because you're moping about your family. If you ask me, it's time to stop moping and start doing." "At least Vladimir isn't hiding who he is." argued Jonathan, "He does not roam covered in make up to disguise his vampiric ways."
"If you choose to look dead Jon, that is up to you. You'll find I have bitten many more necks than you since I started wearing make up. I used to wear it when I was human...and the boys prefer it. Anyway, we're talking about this girl. Perhaps Vladimir could gain favour with his family if he saved his nephew from heartache."
"Yes Vlad..." "...perhaps you could split them up."
"What's so unsuitable about this girl?" asked Vladimir.
"I'm glad you asked." said the Countess, "The father is after the Goth fortune, it would follow that the rest of the family, including the daughter, are goldiggers too." "And what am I supposed to do about it?"
"Nothing dear...yet."
"See what you think of her Vlad, then report back to us." added Jonathan.
"Should be fun..." smirked Lucy. So Vladimir followed Cornelia Crumplebottom for a few days (after dusk, naturally...or...unaturally) to see if he could catch her out... ...but she always behaved impeccably... ...on this particular evening however, hovering outside the conservatory, he overheard an interesting conversation between Cornelia and her sister... "Are you excited about the engagement sister?" asked Agnes.
"Of course, it's every girls dream to have a lavish wedding." giggled Cornelia.
"Ah, I wondered if it had anything to do with the Goth fortune."
"Well I h a v e dreamt of a grand wedding to a rich husband Aggie."
"Capital idea Cornelia. The union will certainly please daddy." quipped Agnes. Vladimir had heard enough. The countess was right, this was a shameless harpie. He took to bat form and flew back to the crypt...if he had stayed a little longer however he may have felt differently... "I have also dreamt of a kind and gentle husband. I would marry him, sister dear, if he didn't have a simolean to his name...I love him so." beamed Cornelia. Quite oblivious to this love, Vladimir angrily sat down at the crypt's grand table.
"Was I right Vladimir? Does she love your family's money and not your nephew? Is this not a glorious opportunity to win favour with your family?" crowed the Countess. "Right as always." replied Vladimir, "But how do we break up the union my love? Blackmail? Seduction?"
"You make her a vampire." laughed Jonathon. "What!?" asked a somewhat suprised Vladimir.
"In all the time since the Countess improved you, made you one of us, you have not turned a single human."
"I am a vampire Jon. Is that not enough for you?"
"Think Vlad. You can save Gunther Goth from unhappiness and prove yourself to the Countess at the same time."
"But I - " "Just bite her." snapped Lucy, "Get her alone and bite her. It's really very simple."
"How do I get her alone?" sighed Vladimir. "You are beginning to disappoint me." hissed the Countess, "Use your imagination." Late the next night, Simon was returning from sucessfully putting another of Mr. Langrabb's rivals out of business. He noticed that he was not alone. "Aah!" he cried.
"I am not here to harm you." said Vladimir.
"What do you want?"
"I want to put an end to this union between your daughter and Gunther Goth." "W-who are you?" stammered Simon.
"A concerned relative!"
"Why should I spoil my daughter's dreams? It's a very good match for her and the family." "You will be compensated. I have access to a vast amount of funds, more than you would gain from any marriage between the two lovers. You will get your share...if you help me."
Simon hesitated... ...
"What would I have to do?" he asked. The following weekend the Crumplebottoms visited the Goth mansion as Viktor and Gretle returned their hospitality.
"I must say I'm impressed by your mechanical man Mr. Goth." said Prudence.
"Thank you Mrs. Crumplebottom." said Viktor, "While I hate to change the subject..." "...they have just announced on the radio that Britain have declared war on Germany. I never thought I would live to see this again. Why couldn't we learn from the great war? War is no good!" "It always astonishes me that man has an infinite capacity to do harm to others. It's a wonder that we find time to fall in love at all, with all this fighting going on." agreed Cornelia.
There were murmurs of assent before they all settled down to their lobster. After the meal Gunther turned to Cornelia;
"May I take you on a tour of the grounds?" he asked. "How exciting! Father, May I?"
"Outside, after dark and unchaperoned? I won't allow it."
"Oh Daddy, please..." "If you are going to make a scene Cornelia then - "
"Simon. Do be quiet." interrupted Prudence, "You've embarassed our daughter in front of everybody." "I shall excuse myself then." replied Simon.
"I think I need some air." said Cornelia.
"make sure you go alone. And don't come back in until you're ready to apologise." "I need fresh air too." said Agnes.
"I won't allow it. You will wait here young lady!" yelled Simon.
"Don't be ridiculous husband. You sit down. Agnes, go to your sister." ordered Prudence. "Oh Aggie...why is he so beastly sometimes?"
"He's just a little strict. That's his way."
"And in front of Gunther...I'm so humiliated."
"If he likes you half as much as you like him he won't mind at all." "He likes you? Why? What do you offer him?" said Vladimir.
"Who's there?" wavered Cornelia.
"What do you offer Gunther?" he repeated. "Who are you? asked Agnes.
"Long lost uncle Vladimir. What do you offer him girl?" "My love." said Cornelia.
"He offers you fortune and proud tradition. You offer him a greedy father."
"No! What do you want!?" shouted Agnes.
"I want your sister to leave Gunther Goth alone!"
"But I love him." said Cornelia.
"You love his money! Now if you stay still this shouldn't hurt a bit."
"Wait!" screamed Agnes, "She does love him! It's the truth. Cornelia is very pretty but not superficial. And your nephew is very much in love with her. If you hurt her he will never forgive you."
Vladimir hesitated... Hearing the commotion, Frida rushed outside. She shouted for her father from the kitchen door upon seeing Vladimir. He promptly changed form and flew away, leaving the girls frightened and bewildered. Everyone retired to the drawing room. Cornelia was being comforted by her sister and Frida after the incident.
"Now you know the family secret. I have a real vampire for an uncle...are you sure you still want to get married?" asked Gunther. "Yes, my darling of course. I love you." replied Cornelia.
"You were both very brave. I couldn't face uncle Vladimir like that. I should have fainted." said Frida.
"You saved our lives." corrected Agnes.
"No Aggie, I am grateful to Frida but...it was once y o u convinced him, that we were safe. I was terrified...but...when he realised that I truly loved Gunther, and that he loved me...he couldn't do it. Whatever terrible thing he was going to do he couldn't do it." ...and Simon said nothing. The next day, Viktor saw his brother outside the mansion in the daylight. "Vladimir! You will not last long in the light!"
"I am no longer welcome at the crypt brother, the countess ejected me."
"You must go to the family crypt, quickly."
"You will let me stay, after what I have done to you?"
"You are still my brother Vlad, now go..." ...so he went to the Goth family crypt and rested. At the Crumplebottom house things were getting heated.
"Why do I get the feeling that you had something to do with last night's incident Simon?"
"I will not tolerate that sort of suggestion Prudence." "You sent our daughter out to a vampire!" she yelled.
"I had no hand in it!"
"I don't believe you Simon. What was your reward? Gold? To make Cornelia one of the undead!"
"You speak utter nonsense woman."
"I stood by while you crushed Langrabb's enemies...destroyed businesses and put people out on the street. But to put our own daughter with a vampire...
You are not the man I married...I can no longer bear to be together with you. I'm leaving." "You want a d-divorce?" asked Simon.
"I cound't stand to go through that. I will remain Mrs. Crumplebottom...but I must leave Simon...goodbye."
So Simon Crumplebottom was quite alone.
