Benjamin Arnold had seen a lot in his day: Babies abandoned in parks, left on sims doorsteps; toddlers never been taught to walk, talk or be potty trained; children practically skin and bone existing on cupcakes made in toy ovens or salvaging for themselves juice, cookies and chips from a poorly stocked fridge.

Yes, Benjamin Arnold had seen Sims in all shapes, sizes, and in varying conditions of health and neglect, had heard horrendous and heartrenching stories from the bizaare to the outrageous ... ... but never had he heard of anything as farfetched as what Jodi Bishop was telling him now. ...and if the boy hadn't been sitting right there in his very office, Benjamin Arnold would not have believed her. "So you're telling me, he comes from up there ... somewhere from outer space ... and that Chester Gieke - may we not speak ill of the dead - found him in a forrest, and raised him with the help of a robot. And ahhh ... all this has taken place without a hint of it being broadcast anywhere on the news, no papers had reported it ... NO one knows but you and this ... this robot you say?"
Benjamin was already beginning to see such delightful prospects of having such a boy in his care. Adequate heating in winter, more than porridge for breakfast, clothes bought and repaired - not to mention benefits for the children. Yes, a little public exposure of historical significance surely could earn a lovely lump sum for SimCity Orphanage.
"I know he's the newest addition to the orphanage," Jodi began, "and protocol has to be followed ..." Jodi continued with hopefulness, "I was just hoping - because he was Chesters and Chester was a ... a good friend to me, that you could perhaps ...." "Miss Bishop, I will see to it personally that this boy gets the BEST of care," Benjamin assured the worried - very attractive young verile social worker who had never before put herself in a position to owe Benjamin Arnold a favour ... "And ... if it's at all possible," Jodi again ventured, "if a family is looking to adopt ANY child, let the boy be -"
"I understand completely Miss Bishop ... or may I call you Jodi?" Benjamin Arnold smiled sweetly.
Jodi frowned a little. "MR Arnold," Jodi emphasised, determined to keep the sometimes-too-eager older man in his place, "I trust your professional opinion and know you'll do what is right for the boy."
"Miss Bishop, let me assure you I will treat him as though he were my own, as I do for ALL children in my care. Let me remind you Chester Gieke - may he rest in peace - was such a child who benefited from my guidance and direct influence."
Jodi Bishop didn't need reminding. It was on the tip of her tongue to point out that Chester had never been adopted out. Although Chester hadn't spoken much to Jodi about his days in the orphanage, Jodi figured there had to be some reason Chester ran away from it in his teens. Jodi was glad he had - otherwise they would never have met in high school.
"You'll be taken care of here," Jodi said, trying to sound as cheerful as she could, "you'll be able to meet lots of other children and get to go to school, and one day, maybe very soon, you'll go home with a family who'll love you and cherish you and give you everything you need and deserve."
"Like Jonathan you mean?" The boy's black eyes looked up at her innocently.
Jodi's face fell sadly. Why was she beginning to resent her job so much these days? "Like a real Mummy ... and a real Daddy and ... and maybe a brother or a sister ..." It was getting harder to talk. As Jodi said goodbye and promised to call in a few days, a foreboding doubt overshadowed her. Had she done the right thing?
"HA! HA! Check it out!!! It's a FREAK BOY!"
"Bradley Carlton what are you doing out of class! Get back there right this minute!" Benjamin ordered gruffly.
"Whachya got there Sir? He's GREEN! Did you get car sick or something?" Bradley sniggered all the way to class.
Benjamin Arnold introduced the small class to their new classmate. "Children this is -" Benjamin looked down at the wide eyed child. "What's your name boy?"
The sad lonely child looked at the other children's faces. It was the first time he had seen other children and his little heart beat rapidly. Maybe he would be able to make some friends. "I don't have a name Sir."
"Don't be ridiculous, everyone has a name."
"Let's call him Goosberry Fencamp!!" Bradley snided. "Hey Goosberry Fencamp! Goosberry Fencamp!! Goosy Goosy Fencamp!!" "Why are we gonna call him that?" Todd was a younger boy, happy and kind in nature, and sometimes learned things a little slower than the other children.
"BeCAUSE Dumbhead, he's from out of space! It's an anagram for green boy from outerspace!" Bradley, although aggressive and bad tempered, was also exceptionally intelligent, although he chose to use this asset for bad rather than good.
"What's a nanagram?" Todd asked.
"There's no such things as aliens," Jeffrey said with conviction. It's what his Scientist father had adamantly said before being struck dead by a satellite. Apparently there was quite a lot floating around up there in space, but aliens ... no, definitely no aliens - his father had checked everynight through his big black telescope. "Are you really from another planet?" Jessica asked. "Which one?" Jessica was usually a very shy girl who kept mostly to herself and her own imaginary friends. Bradley always teased her that her parents ran away from home because she was so ugly. The truth was ... Jessica didn't know the truth. Just that, one day, both her parents were gone and then this kind tall lady in a black suit came and brought her to the orphanage. Jessica had been at the orphanage now for nearly five years - the longest of all the children. Jessica suspected that what Bradley said was true ... and that it was also the reason why she saw other children being chosen to go home with the Mummy's and Daddy's. "Well I think that's fascinating." Angela had only arrived at the orphanage a few days ago. She was confident and friendly, and VERY - as Jessica knew only too well - pretty. "And we WON'T be calling you Goosberry Fencamp." She glanced around at Bradley and gave him a finalised look. Even though she was so pretty, Jessica still kind of liked the new girl - she was the only one who even tried standing up to Bradley. "Come and sit beside me," Angela offered. Chester's boy did so hesitantly, not quite understing the 'oooooohhhh' sounds Bradley was making, or why Todd was giggling. "Angela and Goosy sitting in a tree -"
"Don't call him that!" Angela said protectively. "I think we'll call you ... Al, just for a nickname. Just until you get a Mummy and Daddy and then they'll give you a proper name. Would you like that?"
The young alien boy nodded a little deleriously. She had such big blue sparkly eyes and such silky long lovely golden coloured hair. And her skin ... wasn't green.
"Cool, so we've got you a name," the young teacher said from the back of the classroom. " Let's get back to work. Everyone, open your workbooks to page three ..." "Ahh ... SimChronicle?" "Do I have a scoop for you!" "How much you say?" Benjamin was beside himself. "And all I have to do is let you interview the child ..." "... ohhh ..... ahuh ..... yes ... I see ..... well, of course you'll need proof - I myself wouldn't have believed it - well, no of course ... yes, false claims, indeed ... mmmm ..." "I think that can be easily arranged ..... Yes, I look forward to it too." After classes 'Al' as he was now nicknamed, was shown where he would sleep. It was in the same room as the other children. The bed was lumpy, the walls were stained and there was little in the way of entertainment or educational opportunities (as Jonathan referred to all the toys he had lavished upon the boy). However there was a lovely big toy ship and Al was happy when Todd asked him to play.
It wasn't long before Bradley came up behind them. "What do you think you're doing Goosy?"
"That's MY pirate ship and I'M the only one who says who can play with it and I say YOU can't! Aliens belong on SPACE ships not Pirate ships so why don't you get on your space ship and fly home!!"
"Well," Al hesitated,"my spaceship crashed and can't fly anymore ... and ..." Al tried not to be too sad, "I don't really know where my home is ..."
Bradley laughed coarsely in Al's face. "Hahhhhaaaaahhh!! Goosy Goosy Fencamp really believes he's an alien!!! HAahhhaaaahaaa!"
Al wondered what was so funny.
"You're not REALLY an alien. Jeffrey's Dad said there's no such things as Aliens. You're just green. And you know what that makes you?"
"No."
"A MONSTER!!!! and you know what we do to MONSTERS on THIS planet? We SHOOT THEM!!" Bradley made a pretend gun with his finger and aimed it at Al.
Al darted in panic, his heart screeching in fear, his pores sweating suddenly. "Noo!!!" he cried out, close to terrified tears. He had seen guns on the military men scouring his house and had asked Jonathan what they were for. Jonathan didn't know. So they researched the topic on Sim net together and were horrified at the results.
Bradley rolled around on the floor laughing cruelly.
"Hey ..." Jeffrey said, trying not to laugh himself, "it's not real you know," he tried to placate. "It's just pretend, like a game, you know for fun." "That was fun?" Al asked. He didn't quite understand the children at this place and he was beginning to really miss his room, his house, and his robot. "Yeah that was ROCKIN' fun! You little freaky goosy! And keep away from my pirate ship! And that's NOT pretend!" "Bradley here is what's known as a BULLY," Angela said in her very grown up manner. "And bully's only have fun when other people aren't. That's why they don't have any friends."
"Who'd wanna be friends with you anyway little Miss-snooty-I'm-so-good and MATURE!" Bradley was secretively terrified that Angela could actually be smarter than him. He left the room in a huff.
"And you're not a monster," Angela soothed in a motherly fashion. "I think your skin is very pretty, and you have lovely black eyes." Todd giggled. "That's funny. Angela called him pretty. Hehhheee, boy's can't be pretty." "Why not? I think everyone is pretty in their own special way." Jessica suddenly began jumping on the bed. She was REALLY beginning to like this new girl. Al watched her curiously. "Why is she doing that?"
"Because it's fun!" Angela said happily.
"Gee, you really don't know much about having fun do you?" Jeffrey said a little amazed. "Maybe you really ARE an alien." "What do you think's fun? Can you like, moon walk, or what's that, you know, float around and stuff." "I don't think so," Al said. "But I like cooking, and I like cleaning, and I like learning new things." "That doesn't sound like fun to me," Todd said. "Me, I like blowing BUBBLES!" Yep. If he was allowed, Todd would blow bubbles all day. "Do you really think you're an alien?" Jeffrey asked seriously, done with the fun talk.
"That's what my father - my founder and protector said. He wrote it all in a book."
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean it's true, does it, I mean, just because he said so ..."
"Well, there really is a space ship in my backyard, I could take you there and show you ... only, it seems no one else can see it ..." "And he is funny looking," Todd said.
"Very different in appearance to most Sims," Angela corrected.
"Yeah ..." Jeffrey had to consider this. "Maybe ..." If it was true that would mean his father was wrong.
"Does it really matter?" Al asked. The other children waited for Jeffrey's response. (Except Jessica who was still happy to hear that perhaps she was pretty somewhere.)
Jeffrey shrugged. "Nah. Come on, let's play."
It was a wonderful feeling to have friends, and Al did enjoy playing and talking and learning so many different things from them ... but there was an emptiness he felt inside and as the other children played before bedtime, Al hugged the only thing he now had left of his family. "I miss you Jonathan ..." Al whispered to his toy robot. Jonathan had made it especially for him and had made sure Al took it with him - 'to remember me by'. Maybe, just maybe, that lady in the dark suit had meant what she said and Jonathan would be allowed to visit. "Well I'm afraid Miss Bishop the couple you are sending over this afternoon have specifically requested a female."
Jodi looked at her records. There had been no such request recorded.
"Please understand Miss Bishop I hold your office in the highest respect, but the couple - understanding special requests are not always taken into consideration by your department, have made arrangements directly with me."
Benjamin Arnold was pleased to hang up on the irrate social worker, reminding him of promises he had apparently made.
Gemma grinned excitedly up at her husband. "Oh, I hope he's as cute as you."
"Min, you know it doesn't matter what he looks like, if we can give a child a home -"
"Oh loosen up Tom, I'm kidding. Of course it doesn't matter what he looks like. Isn't it great that they're going to give us a boy - what you've always wanted."
Tom began to loosen up. A smile crept on his face. Yes, he had always hoped for a boy to carry on the family name.
"Ah, Mr and Mrs Smiley, so glad to see you this lovely sunny afternoon. Hasn't it been wonderful weather we're having lately. Not a cloud in sight, no sign of rain in ... well, ever. Now if you'll just sign these papers, I will let your child know her family is here."
Gemma glanced at Tom. "Did he just say 'her'?"
Tom frowned. "I'm sure it was just a slip of the tongue."
"Angela dear, pack your bags," Benjamin Arnold said, "your new family is here to take you to your new home."
"Really?" Angela said excitedly. "Already! I can't believe it!"
"Yes yes, well hurry it along dear, we don't want to keep your folks waiting."
Suddenly Jessica burst into tears. She was NEVER going to get out of this place. Angela misinterpreted Jessica's sadness. "Don't worry Jess, you can come and visit me as often as you like, and I'll call you on the phone often, I promise." "It's been so great meeting you Al, and I just know we'll be the best of friends okay."
"Bye Angela." Al wondered why he felt so sad. It was a good thing that Angela now had parents to look after her. Why wasn't he just happy for her. "I AM happy for you," he said unconvincingly.
Angela put her arms about Al's small body. "Hug me back silly," she said laughing. She squeezed tight when he did. "And don't worry Al, there's going to be someone really special who'll come for you, I can just FEEL it." She quickly pecked his cheek. "And another thing, don't let that Bradley get to you. Just laugh at him, or walk away, he'll soon get sick of picking on you. I think Todd and Jeffrey could be really good friends for you." Al leant close to her ear and said a little shyly. "You were my favourite."
Angela grinned happily. "That's so sweet Al. Don't ever change."
"It doesn't matter what colour you are or where you're from, if you're good to people you'll always be special." Angela's eyes welled with tears as she heard herself repeating the words of her mother. Even though she would never tell anyone, she was a little scared of going to live with new Sims. No one could ever replace her real Mother and Father and she missed them so much that it hurt inside.
"So keep happy," she said cheerily.
Angela waited in front of the blue car parked outside. It was the same blue car she had first arrived in If she had not been thinking about other things, she would have wondered what it was doing here now. No other Sim children were being dropped off.
"Don't forget me!" Angela called to the other children waving goodbye.
"Errrr," Tom hesitated when he saw the young girl waiting patiently for them. You said we'd be getting a boy."
"Well ... the thing is..." Benjamin began.
Gemma thumped her husband's arm. "Are you kidding Tom, look at her, she's adorable!"
Benjamin sighed in relief. His plan had worked.
Jodi Bishop was livid. "Benjamin Arnold I thought we had an agreement! I thought you were going to arrange for MY child to be next to be taken in!"
"Jodi my dear -"
"I am Miss Bishop to you!"
"And you Miss Bishop have forgotten what your role is. You don't own any one particular child and just because one happens to be little ... unusual, does NOT call for special treatment! When a Sim comes looking for his ... shall we say ... uniqueness, then I'm sure we won't have any trouble placing him with a caring family." The truth was, Benjamin needed the boy if he was going to prove to the Sims Chronicle that there were aliens walking among them.
"Trouble, what do you mean trouble?"
"Well to be frank, potential adoptees have taken one look at the boy and have left the office without a word." It was an outright lie, but Jodi Bishop had no way of knowing that.
And Benjamin Arnold had no way of knowing that Jodi Bishop was under so much stress. He watched in genuine alarm as the beautiful woman cried into her hands. "All I want is for someone to love that boy, to take him to a good home, to give him the kind of life ... Chester would have wanted ..." "Now now my dearest girl ..."
"Don't even think about it!" Jodi said backing away from the Sim's embrace. She ran out the door and drove away.
Jodi Bishop stood over Chester Gieke's grave and with complete wretchedness screamed to the heavens "WHY?"
She had not realised just how strongly attached she'd been to the red haired awkward shy science geek. Her one attempt at romance had been embarrassingly rejected and their friendship remained the slightly aloof platonic one it had been in highschool. Even though it had been some time since Jonathan the robot told her of his death, she could not believe that Chester Gieke was really dead.
That was because, he wasn't.
If Jodi had stuck around in the next couple of weeks, she would have witnessed something miraculous. But she didn't ... so nothing is what she saw.
She did however, make an important decision.
The next day Jessica was still crying. Al asked her what was wrong. "I'm ugly!" she blurted miserably. "That's why nobody wants ME! And nobody ever will want me because I'm so UGLY!" She sobbed into her hands heartily.
"You're not ugly," Al said sincerely.
"I am! I've got horrible red hair and big bushy eyebrows and a yucky mouth."
"You think you've got problems?" Al said trying to cheer her up. "I'm the one with green skin and these huge black eyes."
"Yeah, but you're not ugly."
"Well either are you. My dad had red hair. He wasn't ugly. And Angela said everyone is pretty."
"Angela can say things like that because she IS so pretty. That's why you like her better than me."
Al thought about that. "I like Angela cause ... I liked the things she said."
"AND cause of the way she looked."
Al pondered. "Do you think Bradley is ugly?"
"No ..." Jessica didn't want to admit that.
"But do you like him?"
"No way! He's horrible!"
"So maybe it doesn't really matter what you look like on the outside. It's the kind of Sim you are that makes you likable or not."
Jessica began to smile. Maybe this boy was right.
"Al?" Jessica asked shyly. "Would you be my friend?"
"I thought we already were."
Jessica hugged him gratefully. Maybe she wouldn't need imaginary ones now.
"Ahhh, Miss Bishop, you're back," Benjamin observed anxiously. The Sim Chronicle was due to arrive some time in the next hour and it wasn't a part of the plan to include Jodi Bishop.
"I've come for the boy."
"Now just one minute, you can't -"
"All the paper work is here. All documents have been signed. I'm now legally his guardian, and I've come to collect him. Please bring him here Mr Arnold."
Benjamin Arnold's hopes were dashed. He read over the papers. They were legitimate. Of course they were. Adoptions were Jodi Bishops department. He didn't think she would ever be an applicant herself though. And the timing! The Sim Chronicle. The Simoleans ... heat in winter ... perhaps bacon for breakfast, just every now and then ... gone.
"Mr Arnold, I'm waiting."
Al couldn't believe his green ears when Mr Arnold said there was someone to take him home. It was the lady in the dark suit. Al was confused.
"Hello," Jodi said quietly. She of course didn't know the children had nicknamed him Al.
"Hello," Al replied.
Jodi didn't realise how nervous she'd be. She outstretched her hands. "I was wondering ... would you like to come home with me ... for me ... to be ..." she swallowed, "your Mum. For me to take care of you?"
Something almost impelled Al to put his hands in hers. "Alright."
Jodi laughed nervously at his simple calmness. Her eyes brimmed with emotion.
"So ... I can call you ... Mother?"
Jodi nodded sheepishly. "If you'd like to ... or just ... Mum." Her voice trembled on the last word.
Al smiled. "I'd like that."
Jodi suddenly scooped him up in her arms.
"Mum?" Al asked still in her firm embrace.
Jodi almost giggled. "Yes?"
"What will my name be?"
"I'd like to call you Theodore."
Al thought about it. "Theodore. Okay." Al began to smile. He now had a name. Not a nickname. A real name. Theodore. "Why Theodore?"
Jodi wiped away a tear. "It means ... A gift from God."
"Oh." Al nodded and thought. "Mum?"
"Yes Theodore?"
"What's God?"
Jodi smiled. "We'll have a nice long chat about that one after dinner tonight."
Jodi was surprised to answer the door for the second time that day. Already that morning, Jessica, Jeffrey and Todd had been dropped off to play with Theodore Jodi was delighted to see another of Theodore's friends.
"I hope you don't mind, but Angela couldn't wait to come over to see Theodore's new house and Mummy," Gemma bubbled happily.
"I hope you don't mind Mrs Bishop," Angela said. "I've missed Al so much - I mean, Theodore."
"Please, call me Jodi, and it's perfectly fine to call him Al - it's his nickname and he's very fond of it. I'm so happy that you came over, Al will be thrilled. They're all in the back yard."
Jodi invited Gemma in for coffee.
"So tell me," Gemma said sincerely, "how are things going for you and Al? I heard you no longer work for the department." "How could I? Now that I'm a mother, I just couldn't stomach the thought of taking children away from their parents. Surely everyone deserves a second chance. So I quit. I'm now a freelance writer. Allows me to work my own hours here at home, and I can be here for Theodore. He learns so quickly, and has so many questions." "Angela is very fond of him," Gemma said. "I'm so pleased they're at the same school."
"I'm just relieved he's doing so well ... and he's been wonderfully accepted as though he's - well, you know what I mean."
Gemma smiled and sipped from her cup. "Please, who of us can say we're normal anyway, am I right?"
Jodi watched Theodore play with his close friends and her heart swelled with satisfaction. Still, something was missing. And it was something so easily fixed that Jodi didn't know why she hadn't thought of it sooner. "Gemma would you watch the kids for a while? There's something I need to do. I'll be back in just a sec."
"Sure. Take your time. I'll get lunch ready for them."
Theodore couldn't believe his eyes! But there in his backyard ... ...was Jonathan!
Theodore ran to the robot and threw his arms around him. "Jonathan! You've come to visit!"
"Actually," Jodi said, "he's come to live with us."
Theodore hesitated in disbelief. "You mean it?"
"Sure do."
Theodore hugged his mother ferociously and then ran to Jonathan again. "And guess what Jonathan? I have a name - a REAL name! It's Theodore!"
The door bell rang again. She looked at Gemma. "More friends visiting?"
"Well, as they say," Gemma said, "the more the merrier."
It wasn't a friend from school coming to visit. It wasn't a friend from work coming to visit. But it was a friend and Jodi's heart beat wildly. "Chester!" She breathed. With weak legs she ran and hurled herself at him, almost sobbing his name. "Chester!"
Chester Gieke was caught off balance - literally and emotionally. His heart responded quickly to Jodi's passionate embrace. He had not expected this reception and was slightly overwhelmed. Then he tightened his hold on her and pressed her close to his chest that held his loudly thumping heart. "But how can this be ... you're ... you're dead ... how ..."
"It's a bit of a long story," Chester said quietly, just happy to finally realise what was important in life. He only hoped Jodi still wanted to go out to that restaurant.
"Oh Chester, I don't care what happened, or how it happened, I'm just so glad you're here, and you're alright and I don't ever want you to go away again." "Chester so much has happened since you've been away. The baby you rescued from the forrest ... he's now mine," Jodi said hurriedly, "I mean I adopted him. And he's a fine young boy."
"I know," Chester said.
"You ..."
"Well ... I'm not sure you would believe me if I told you."
"I would never doubt anything you told me Chester. I thought you'd know that too."
Chester's heart raced and his palms began to sweat. Had Jodi always been this beautiful, this warm, this caring?
"You must know how very much you mean to me Chester."
In a sudden attack of bravery, Chester reached for what Neila, his friend from above had carved especially for him to especially give to Jodi. "Jodi Bishop, would you marry me?" Jodi was temporarily mesmerised by the huge beautiful glowing rock. She was hoping Chester would finally go on a date with her, but this ... "Oh Chester! Yes! Yes I will marry you!" And they wasted no time. Because time they knew, was something that cannot be saved, cannot be given back, and cannot be taken for granted. And love was the most powerful force in the universe. ... and kissing wasn't half bad either - so Chester finally discovered. .. .And that's how it came to be that Theodore Gieke would never have to use the word 'alienation' ever again. The end...

... sorta ...
... "It appears your experiment is doing well," Neila observed.
"I am well pleased," Pollination Technician 302 confessed.
"Perhaps it is time to implement phase two," Birth Queen Uriel suggested.
"Interbreeding. Mmmmm. Phase one has taught us that we shouldn't interfere in extreme ways with Sim's lives. Perhaps our subjects should be voluntary." "But how is that possible, as only Chester Gieke knows of our existence."
"Perhaps there is some way we can tell if a Sim has an interest in celestia."
"Yes, if there was some way we could tell if a Sim is interested in galactic phenomena, that would be a good indication of their readiness to interbreed."
"Yes. It is time to implement phase two."
"But what will let us know of the Sim's interest?"
"Perhaps this. There's one now."

I know it took 4EVA, but this final part is especially for those who've read parts 1-4 (and can remember them!) I hope you enjoyed the series. I HATE science fiction and when one of my sims was abducted I sent in Chester to 'kidnap' the baby. He and the robot were in the bin to delete! Then TSR introduced this storytelling feature and I thought ... interesting set of characters - an alien, a geek, a robot. It was supposed to be ONE upload, but it kind got out of hand...\:P I'm glad I took a break, because I DID enjoy making this one and I've kinda grown attached to these characters. Thanks for reading and thanks to all those who have demonstrated such great support.\:\)

That was a beautiful story! I love how you incorporated all the orphans into the story too, they were all adorable! (BTW, is Gemma Todd's mother? He looks just like her!) And it's great how you ended the story with "sorta," leaving room for a sequel. I'll be looking out for one! Maybe "Teddy" will marry Angela, or Jessica. \;\) \:rah\:
