Some days Jodi Bishop hated her job. She strongly suspected this was going to be one of those days. Why did Maxine always send her to do the dirty work? Especially on this case ... Maxine knew how Jodi felt about Chester .... and seeing him with his own child was not going to be easy. When Jodi arrived at Chester Gieke's that day at 10 am as arranged, she didn't get to see anything - not Chester, or his new baby. His laboratory was still there. His house was still there. The furniture inside his house was still there, but when she called out, there was no answer. And she didn't see who was watching her through a window. "Did you go around the back?" Maxine asked when Jodi went back to the office.
"There was a fence. You know we only have access to the front door without a warrant, and we have no grounds for a warrant, just some interferring biddy who can't mind her own business."
Maxine knew something was out of place. It wasn't like Chester Gieke not to keep appointments ... and it certainly wasn't like Chester Gieke not to be in his laboratory. He was always working on some scientific project. And Chester did respond evasively on the phone yesterday. Yes. Something was not right, and somehow, warrant or no warrant, Maxine had to get to the bottom of it. She rang the Gieke household, but as expected, no one answered. What WAS going on? If there HADN'T been a fence, and Jodi Bishop WAS able to walk around the back, she would have seen the remains of an alien spacecraft and her and Maxine's suspicions would have increased tenfold. The truth was, when Jodi visited those days ago, she had been watched by a robot named Jonathan. When she had called out "Is anyone home?" Jonathan remembered the words of Chester Gieke months before: "If you're questioned by anyone, shut yourself down." With a timer on, Jonathon did just that. The social worker left, and he and the baby he was caring for were safe once more. Jonathan had been devastated when he'd found Chester, his only friend and creator, lying on his bedroom floor. Jonathan decided to bury Chester in the woods where the beautiful bouncing green baby was found. It was now many days later and every one of those days, Jonathan would visit the graveside with fresh flowers, and would tell Chester how his lovely bundle of joy was growing. One day, Jonathon witnessed a miracle. Out of thin air, a birthday cake appeared on a small table. The pretty little candles on top began to glow a gentle flame. Jonathan concluded that it was meant for the little child. The baby cooed and wriggled happily, and suddenly as though in an instant, the baby turned into a toddler! Jonathan held the growing child in his arms, delighted to know at last ... it was a BOY! Jonathan loyally and with great joy went about the tasks of child rearing - as he'd read about in Chester's extensive library. He taught the young boy language .... ... the art of movement .... ... and with much relief, how to avoid filling diapers with the ikky smelly stuff that seemed to expell itself on such a regular basis. Chester provided everything he could for the stimulation and growth of the male child. Of course, as once told by Chester, he made all purchases through S-Bay. Jonathan loved and cared for the child as well as any flesh and blood Sim could. As for the growing alien, it now looked at Jonathan with the same adoration it used for Chester. "I love you Jonathan," the toddler giggled and hugged the robot with great affection, not realising of course, that robots couldn't really feel or care, they could only simulate appropriate responses. Meanwhile ... on the other side of the galaxy ... there were a group of others who could feel and think and care. They watched down on Simplanet with interest ... ... and one of them was not happy. "I'm telling you, there ARE aliens and they're roaming freely on OUR planet!" Major Tilders was nearing exhaustion. "Scientific evidence does NOT lie!" "And we've been searching that region for months now, and the results are always the same! Nothing!" Major Abijheet reasoned. "If you ask me, this whole investigation is a waste of time and taxpayers resources. It's obvious we're not going to find what we're looking for." The meeting erupted with emotion. "There's an alien spaceship sitting out there and you say-"
"We don't even know if it's real!"
"Are you blind? That's not a figment of somesims' imagination!"
"But it could be a prank... just because we can't identify what it's made of doesn't mean it's not from our own planet-"
"ORDER!" General Buzz Grunt demanded. "For as long as I'm in charge, we WILL continue this investigation! I believe with every cell in my body that a race from another world tried to make contact with ours. The evidence is before us. What we don't know is if they've come as our friends or as our enemy. We CANNOT stop until we've found what we're looking for." Hours later General Buzz gathered his unit and told them of his plan. "We need to gather as many troops we have at our disposal and search the entire planet if we need to. This is a matter of national security." That very night, hundreds of military vehicles carried dedicated loyal and some frightened Sims away from their loved ones and homes in search of intergalactic truth. What they were looking for meanwhile had grown into a child. And the first thing he wanted to know was what happened to his father - Chester Gieke. Jonathan knew it was time for the young boy to know the complete truth of his life. When Chester was alive he had written a personal journal, detailing everything that had happened from the moment he had been looking through his telescope up till the time they had packed their bags and were ready to leave Simcity forever.
"That night," Jonathan said sadly,"he died from some mysterious disease. I don't know what caused it."
Jonathan took the grieving child out to Chester's grave. "Why?" the young boy lamented. "Why did this happen? I don't understand! How can somebody just die so suddenly and without warning?" The overwhelmed green alien sobbed into this hands, his thin body shaking with grief. Jonathan gathered him in his arms and tried to soothe as best he could.
"I don't know why this happened," he spoke softly to the crying child, but I promise I'll never leave you. You see, robots can't die. We never age, and we never get sick."
The child's glossy eyes dried. "I'd be all alone if I didn't have you Jonathan."
"And I'd be all alone if I didn't have you."
The boy nodded.
"So it's agreed. We'll stick together."
The boy smiled sadly.
Jonathan knew he couldn't neglect the boy's education, but it was out of the question to send him to a public or private school. So Jonathan taught him at home. He was especially good at writing.... ...and excelled at cleaning.... ...and cooking... ... and Jonathan spoiled him rotten with everything a little alien boy could desire - even if sometimes Jonathan couldn't work out the purpose of the objects. Despite having the love of a robot, more material possessions you could poke a stick at and knowledge and skills beyond compare, there was something missing. And every day the sad lonely boy visited his father's grave and talked to Chester for hours. "I wish you hadn't died Dad. I miss you... I love Jonathan very much, but I wish I had a friend... someone else I could talk to, other children to play with. Sometimes I just feel so .... alienated." The birth queens looked down upon the child with concern. "It is not good for the male child to continue alone..."
"We should talk with Pollination Technician 302. It was a mistake of his to take the life of the protector."
"It is true," Pollination Technician 302 agreed. "The experiment is not going to plan."
"Perhaps it is not too late to revitalise the Sim you took."
"No," Pollination Technician said adamantly. "We need the boy to interact with others. The protecting Sim will only try once again to prevent that."
"But a robot?"
"No...that is not part of the plan."
Part of the plan involved Jodi Bishop.

I really like this story. I was disappointed that Chester really did die. I guess I was hoping he'd be saved. Maybe Chester for the boy's name. I know that Chester isn't his real dad but maybe having his name will help the boy to always feel close to him. Again great story, can't wait for part 4. \:D
