Chester took a deep breath to calm his nerves. He could do this. He got through the orphanage okay, graduated College with honours and had made FIRST CONTACT with aliens. A Sim who could do all that could surely buy a baby's crib.
Chester pressed against the shops' glass window and peered inside. Good. No customers ...
Chester pressed against the shops' glass window and peered inside. Good. No customers ... ... just Maude Simpson, the owner of the small baby good store downtown. She was, to say the least a little surprised to see the sworn-for-life bachelor visit her wares that day. She hadn't heard any news about Chester Gieke getting married ... or getting engaged ...or even having a girlfriend for that matter. What on Simplanet was he doing in a baby shop? "Chester my sweet boy! How lovely to see you in this neck of the woods! How has life been treating you lately? You being here can only mean one thing! And I hope I am among the first to congratulate you on your marriage!"
Chester backed away awkwardly from Maude's attempt at an embrace. "Ahhh...." He was beginning to wonder if this had been a mistake.
"Don't be shy Chester! You ARE going to let me know who the lucky simlady is, aren't you? You know if I were just a little younger ..." "No marriage Miss Simpson ..."
"Please Chester, call me Maude ... and what's this, you haven't gone and got yourself married?"
"Ahhh .... no ..."
"Oh dear Chester, we haven't had a little indescrection have we?" Chester didnt have to wonder anymore - he knew trying to publicly buy for a baby was not the wisest move to make. As fulfilling as it was to have the new dependent in Chester's life - secret though it was - it was getting a little cramped in the double bed that had previously seemed so large and spacious and lonely. After a few weeks Chester wanted a little space. "Chester dear, you don't look so well ... it's almost as though you haven't had a good night's sleep in weeks - Oh dear." It occurred to Maude Simpson. "Has a wee little one been keeping you up already dear?" Maude could see on Chester's face she had hit the jackpot. Chester Gieke somehow and for some reason had in his possession a young one. "You'll want the best simoleons can buy of course!" Maude gushed. "We have everything you need here - darling are you doing this on your own?"
Chester rubbed his neck, anxiety beginning to make his palms sweat. Somehow he had to let Maude Simpson know there was no baby, this had all been a stupid mistake. "Ahhh ... Maude," Chester laughed nervously, "I feel a bit silly now, but I was just ..."
"Oh don't be embarrassed dear, it happens to the best of them you know. Starts out innocent enough then one thing leads to another and before you know it ..."
"Can you validate parking?" Maude Simpson stopped for a moment. Then she glared. "What do you think I'm running here? It's not easy running a business I have you know Chester Gieke!"
Chester apologised and almost ran from the store. He had been such an idiot. Why didn't he think things through better?
The encounter with Maude Simpson taught Chester a valuable lesson. What Chester didn't know, was the impact his visit would have on his and many others' lives. Still berating himself, Chester went home and did the thing he should have done in the beginning, bought a crib, change table and baby bath on S-Bay. The following day they turned up, no questions asked. Every day since "the discovery", the military had arrived early in the morning, investigated, took more of the ruins, and left late at night. Now and then they searched Chester's house ... except for the one room that contained the nursery and of course, what it was the military were really after. Chester marvelled every time it happened. Eventually he stopped marvelling and got back to work. He was afterall, a research scientist and he had many research papers to complete. However, there was a distraction ... ....an adorable, rapidly growing distraction that seemed to be invisible to the Sims outside frantically searching for clues.
"Perhaps you're for my eyes only," Chester cooed softly to the pale green baby. The baby seemed to giggle and wriggle in delight, looking at Chester adoringly.
As Chester fed the baby he did begin to wish he had someone special to share in his love and joy ... or just someone he could tell about the wonderful gift he'd been given. But there was no one, and Chester knew better than to indulge in foolish fantasies - he hadn't even bothered spying on Mrs Taylor's daily hottub outings. But there was work to be done, and if Chester didn't do it, the simoleons for his grant wouldn't come through, and although the baby could make green bottles appear out of thin air, and seemed to have some kind of forcefield that prevented others from seeing it, it didn't seem to know how to make simoleons appear, and everysim knows, simoleons don't grow on trees ... do they? It seemed like only minutes had gone by before the baby needed attention again. Yes it was cute and cuddly, and Chesters love for it grew by the hour, but it seemed like raising an alien baby was a full time job - time that Chester just didn't have. And it was getting increasingly difficult to try and recapture that fantastic sentence structure he had in his mind just moments before. Did all babies need this much attention, or just alien babies, Chester wondered. He of course, would never find out. Heading back to his paper for the fifth time that day, Chester paused and was struck by a blueprint he had designed some months before. It gave him an idea. ...and a few days later he had the answer to his problems. He named him Jonathan. Jonathan listened closely as Chester told him about the crash, finding the baby in the woods, why he would see Sims in a uniform in the back yard fairly regularly, and of course, how he - Jonathan came into existence and why. Jonathan took the news very well. "Even though these military Sims can't see the baby, we still can't tell a Sim soul," Chester said confidentially. "Whatever you do, you mustn't talk about the baby with anyone and if you're questioned - by anyone - just shut yourself down." Try as he could, Chester couldn't programme the robot to lie. Then something occurred to Chester - what if the robot couldn't see the baby either? Chester needn't have worried. Jonathan was brilliant with the baby. He fed it, bathed it, changed it's horribly disgusting stinky diapers and even sung it a lullaby to sleep.
It.
Chester didn't know if the baby was male of female. It's ... uuuhhhh ... body, was silky smooth ALL over. As of yet, Chester hadn't given the baby a name. He'd get around to it ... just as soon as his research paper was finished. Naming the baby was the least of Chester's problems. His biggest problem he did know the sex of: female. Her name was Maude Simpson. ... and she waited patiently in the downtown office until one of the workers was free. "Maude! This is a surprise!" It wasn't really. Maude Simpson visited the social workers office every time she saw a Sim child look a little dirty, or a little underfed, or a little unhappy, or heard they hadn't been doing too well at school. Maxine Rogers wondered what the catastrophe could be this time. "Something very interesting occurred in my shop a few days ago," Maude confessed leaning across the counter. "Chester Gieke came in and his behaviour was VERY suspicious."
Maxine hesitated. "Maude ... Chester's a grown sim. We don't really have the resources or the authority to do anything about his behaviour, no matter how suspicious ..."
"Good grief girl! Need I spell it out? I only sell merchandise for babies! Chester Gieke has a baby!"
"A-a-are you sure?"
"Oh yes. I'm sure." Maxine excused herself quickly - not because she thought there was an emergency that needed looking into but because she couldn't contain the gossip! She had to tell Jodi Bishop straight away. Jodi didn't take the news very well. "A ... baby? But -" Jodi was a little struck for words. She had always held a torch for Chester, but when she had asked Chester out for dinner one night he had just turned red and mumbled something under his breath. Jodi found it difficult to believe he could actually father a child ... and there had been no adoptions. Adoptions were her department and she would know about it. "Are you completely sure Chester Gieke has a baby?" Jodi asked emphatically. "Did he actually SAY he has a baby, or have you seen the baby?"
"No ..."
"Maude Simpson, you just can't go around spreading rumours about Sims!" "Don't you take that tone with me young lady! I've been in this Simcity longer than you've been taking Sim children away from their parents. I can read Sims look a book, and I'm here to tell you that Chester Gieke has a baby!"
"S-s-so what if he does?" Jodi was near tears. "People are allowed to have children ..." "You get in that blue car of yours and get around there and check out that Gieke's house. Chester doesn't know a single thing about raising a child - it could be starving - or lying in it's own filfth for hours on end. You Sims are supposed to care and take an interest in the well being of our youth aren't you?"
"Maude," Maxine rescued, "let me assure you, we'll look into it, I promise."
"I'll be around tomorrow to check." Maude Simpson straightened her dress. "I'm just a concerned Sim looking out for the welfare of helpless victims. Children are precious, they need nurturing, love, compassion ..." "Yes, Maude, we'd be lost without you." Maxine ushered the older Sim out of the office. She looked at Jodi and rolled her eyes. "I guess I better check."
Jodi was already back at her desk rechecking recent adoptions.
"Hi, Chester! It's Maxine Rogers here from Child Welfare." Chester's eyes nearly popped out of his head. The last thing he needed was a visit from the Social Worker!
"I've been told you're taking care of a baby."
"Baby? Ahhhh ... uummmm ..."
Maxine suddenly grew suspicous. She's known since high school that Chester found it difficult to lie. "You wouldn't mind if I popped around tomorrow, say ..." she looked at her very busy schedule, "10 am?"
"Uh... 10? That's not a great ..."
"Thanks Chester. We'll see you then."
Chester fumbled with the phone. His heart raced. He called to Jonathan. "We have an emergency!" Chester was panicked. He didn't know what to do. He told his friend what was going to happen tomorrow at 10am.
"I have an idea," Jonathan offered.
Chester listened carefully with eyes wide and his mind not thinking clearly. "Okay. We'll do that. That's probably the best we can do ... it's probably the best for this situation." It took Jonathan only an hour or two to gather Chester's possessions. Their bags were packed. They were ready to go. They were ready to leave Simcity for good. Major Tilder's was experiencing his own restlessnes that night. His analysis of the wreckage had revealed practically nothing. No trace of which planet it had come from, little understanding of the technology used. The investigation was nearing it's end ... and then ... ... there it was. It took the last batch of samplings, but it was there. On the screen. DNA ... from another planet.
There had been an alien life form on the spacecraft. Chester had showered and was busy packing his laboratory when a shooting pain coursed down his spine. He collapsed onto the ground in agony, gasping for breath. A few seconds later it was gone and he could stand upright. He finished in his lab and went upstairs to gather the packed bags. Suddenly, his heart began to beat irregularly and his stomach cramped into tight knots. Energy fled from him as though he'd been unplugged. He could barely move his legs from weakness. He called to Jonathan and told him he had to sleep for just a few hours and then they could go. A few hours went by, but instead of gaining strength, he felt weaker. As he attempted to get out of bed, his knees buckled beneath him and he fell hard on the floor. His pores began to exude a stench. Trying to get up, Chester lost all control of bodily functions. He tried to call out to Jonathan. His voice came out hoarse, croaked. Jonathan heard the cries of his creator and rushed into the room as fast as his metal legs could take him. What he saw there almost made him malfunction. Lying on the bedroom floor, was Chester Gieke.
Dead.
Jonathan was left all alone.
And then the baby began to cry ...
